Proverbs 4

1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.

3 For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.

7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.

11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.

12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

16 For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.

17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

  1. Verses 20-22 MSG “Dear friend, listen well to my words; tune your ears to my voice. Keep my message in plain view at all times. Concentrate! Learn it by heart! Those who discover these words live, really live; body and soul, they’re bursting with health.” Same verses AMP “My son, pay attention to my words and be willing to learn; Open your ears to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, And healing and health to all their flesh.” Listen and make sure you know your Masters voice and never lose sight of Him (stay focused…the enemy is trying to distract you, that’s his job). We must pay attention and be willing to learn (that means accepting the correction and moving forward).

  2. 7. Gaining sound judgment is key, so first things first: go after Lady Wisdom! Now, whatever else you do, follow through to understanding.

    8. Cherish her, and she will help you rise above the confusion of life- your possibilities will open up before you- embrace her, and she will raise you to a place of honor in return.

    9. She will provide the finishing touch to your character-grace; she will give you an elegant confidence. The Voice

We need wisdom and understanding to make sound judgments and decisions; so in praying for wisdom, we are also praying for help in making every decision we face.

There is a difference between confidence and arrogance:
Confidence says, I know what to do so I’m not afraid to act…
Arrogance says, whatever action I take will be right because I say it is…
Which person would you rather be around?

    25 Look straight ahead,
and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
    26Mark out a straight path for your feet;
    stay on the safe path.
    27Don’t get sidetracked;
keep your feet from following evil.

The main focus of the verse is for us to stay focused. The Word tells us not to get sidetracked and to look straight ahead. When Peter was walking on the water and got sidetracked, he started to sink and immediately called on Jesus and Jesus rescued him. The moral of the story is, even if our feet are on a path of water, if our eyes are on Jesus, that path will be stable. 🙂

  4. She, she, she, she… Is Wisdom female?

In the original Hebrew language the word Wisdom is of female gender; similar to Spanish, the Hebrew language is based on gender specific words (Hijo, Hija). So, this could explain why Wisdom is referred to as she; only in part I believe. The Bible declares Eve was Adams help meet. Wisdom has the same properties for all who use her; she is a help in time of need. (See, it is not hard to refer to wisdom as her)

My wife and I will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this month. There are things in my life I would not even attempt to tackle without my wife’s help and/or guidance. The bible clearly details the role of the husband as the head of the household but the wife is the help meet; not a servant or slave. My wife and I make decisions together concerning our household. One should use this same philosophy concerning wisdom and the constant pursuit of her. Do not make decisions without consulting wisdom.

  5. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

Wisdom is the application of knowledge. It is one thing to know that the blood of Jesus will cover our sins but a wise person will become a partaker of their sins being washed away.

We can apply this principle to any area of our lives.

  6. 23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.
25 Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
26 Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.
27 Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil. (NLT)

These are the words I wish I would’ve payed attention to and listened to as a youth. My teen years have passed but I urge young people today to heed these words especially in times like this where being a teen, in my opinion, is the hardest it’s ever been. It doesn’t matter what friends are doing, it doesn’t matter what’s “cool,” if it doesn’t draw you closer to God put it behind you, guard your heart and keep moving onward with your eyes focused on the only one who can save you and love you more than anyone ever could.

Reminds me of a song that says, “I’m not not cool and that’s ok, my God loves me anyway. I’m not cool and that’s alright, I’m still precious in His sight. Oh I’m not cool and I don’t care how I’m supposed to do my hair. I’m not cool and that ok cause my God loves me anyway.”

It’s like Pastor said yesterday, we don’t need to worry about the outside but instead allow God to clean us up inside and the outside will then follow after.

  7. MORE HEART

23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

The HEART is the vital organ of the body. The HEART controls the flow of blood and all other functioning organs of the body. The HEART keeps the lungs pumping, which keeps the brain operating, which keeps our limbs moving.

From a Spiritual parallel. The HEART keeps us on the right path without quitting. It controls our willingness, ability and desire to seek GOD in all things. The HEART keeps us seeking the will of GOD by praying in the SPIRIT, which keeps our MIND on JESUS which keeps us active in HIS KINGDOM.

We must prayerfully protect our heart and seek to always keep on path with the LORD, as we continue to seek HIM and look to HIM in all things we find ourselves on the right path and not looking to the right or left and ready to REMOVE ourselves from all evil.

  8. 10-15 (MSG)
    Dear friend, take my advice;
it will add years to your life.
I’m writing out clear directions to Wisdom Way,
I’m drawing a map to Righteous Road.
I don’t want you ending up in blind alleys,
or wasting time making wrong turns.
Hold tight to good advice; don’t relax your grip.
Guard it well—your life is at stake!
    Don’t take Wicked Bypass;
don’t so much as set foot on that road.
Stay clear of it; give it a wide berth.
Make a detour and be on your way.

Let’s take an adventure! Travel down Wisdom Way and Righteous Road! We are traveling this thing called Life, and every choice and decision affects us. Take the time and apply wisdom!

  9. 14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

Talk about strait forward. If you have ever wondered about going the wrong way. Don’t! Just don’t do it. It’s a very bad idea. Thank you Jesus for not beating around the bush about it.

  10. 12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

Wisdom is the principle key here. If we apply the wisdom of God’s word in every situation, use it as our plumb line, our steps will be ordered of the Lord and we will not walk or stumble.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

  11. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

The choices that we make will lead to darkness if we choose the wrong paths in our lives, but we will shine for God if we choose to go a straight path by making wise choices and listening to his teachings. Applying wisdom in our lives will keep us in the right path.

  12. 25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

When we’re going somehow we have our destination in mind. It is when we start looking around on the journey that we start to wonder what’s around, what we’ve been missing. On our journey to eternity in heaven it is imperative that we keep our eyes forward and not quiet about what is around us.

  13. 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

It is so important that we keep our hearts protected from evil, our mouth from speaking it, our eyes from looking for it, and our feet from walking toward it! In this day and time evil surrounds us and temptations are all around and it makes that much more important that we keep ourselves separated from this world, and be the light that shows others out of the darkness!!

  14. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

I can speak from experience that before I was delivered, when I walked in darkness I would stumble on simple life tasks/obstacles. I would not even understand why life was so hard. I understand now, that when you walk with God , he becomes a lamp unto your feet. The same obstacles I can now see miles down the road and am able to prepare for the accordingly, because when we walk with God we walk in LIGHT, UNDERSTANDING,WISDOM, AND TRUTH!

  15. and attend to know understanding.

2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.

As a child this was the first verse I was taught. I memorized and then said it in front of everyone when the children would present their verse. Fathers do not stop teaching instruction to your children. Do not stop giving correction and instruction and staring words of wisdom. Your child’s attention is valuable they will hear your words but more than anything see your actions. The world system will not teach them the principles to live and to honor God. Fathers are the first figure of the FATHER, our Lord JESUS that a children have. This is very important in a child’s understand of a heavenly loving Father. This doesn’t mean to spoil a child and give them all they want, but in love use the rod of correction when needed. And we see a great emphasis on the importance of the children to “Hear, Listen, incline, attend, keep, take fast hold…” All this are actions to keep the Words/instruction of the father. As children, as we have become children of God, keep coming back to His Word, time and time again return to His Word, keep coming back to Him… For there we’ll find health and life. To God be all the glory.

  16. Pro 4:1 — Pro 4:2
    4 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction,
    and be attentive, that you may gain insight,for I give you good precepts;
    do not forsake my teaching.

Everything that we need to know about living our life is found in our father’s Word the Bible. We just have to be attentive and hungry to find out what all these principle are, it is here when living life really begins.

  17. Proverbs 4:23 (KJV Strong’s)
    23 Keep thy heart with all diligence;
for out of it are the issues of life.

    Keep
(CWSB Dictionary) It also describes a city as guarded or besieged (Isa. 1:8). The active participle is used to signify a watchman.

The word keep signifies a military operation. The watchman on the wall was a sentinel ever observant and ready to blow the trumpet, and sound the alarm if their was enemy movement.

Watchman- (Dake Study Bible Notes) a [watchman] Even strong walls and double gates weren’t enough to secure a city from the enemy. Men watched on top of the walls, day and night. It was from here that messengers from the army could be seen from a distance. Porters opened and shut the gates at the proper time. In this case the porter below could receive the message from the watchman on the wall and pass it on to David.

Only the watchman could prevent enemy infiltration. It was his responsibility to ensure nothing entered in that could do harm to the inhabitants of the city, or the buildings itself. The watchman told the porter to open or close the door. If he ignorantly let in the enemy he was the party responsible for the breach.

We must keep our minds with military like precision. We only are responsible for what is allowed to come into our mind. The word heart in Hebrew culture meant the will, mind, and decisions.

There is no excuse. We must be the watchman over our minds or we could literally endanger ourselves.

    Proverbs 4:23 (AMP)
23 Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.

  18. NLT 16“What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it. 17 But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.” 18 So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.

Even seeing the individual who was healed, seeing the miraculous, the council still refused to believe. We all see acts of accomplishments, feats and miracles, but still ask, “how was it done”. We still question the miraculous. This tells me, its the personal relationship God is looking to have with each and everyone of us. Once that is established, then faith, and believing in God comes.

  19. Proverbs 4:25-27 (NLT)
    25) Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
    26) Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.
    27) Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.

As a child of God and in these last days, we cannot afford to get sidetracked by the things of this world, but we must be filled, live, and walk in the Spirit everyday. We must keep our eyes on Jesus. We must keep reaching forth and pressing towards the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. We must keep our feet on the straight and narrow pathway.
So do as Proverbs 4:23 says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
Guard your heart. Don’t become sidetracked. Keep your eye on JESUS and the prize.

  20. 18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
    Jesus is the light!!

  21. 27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

It’s important that we avoid those things that are not of God. We are God’s property and we must watch what we say and do. No matter what lies the enemy may try to tell us, the truth will always prevail.

  22. 5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
Its important to keep what we been taught in our hearts we will have to use them in them down the road.

  23. “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4:25-27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Be careful not to fixate on things that are not in Gods plan for you. Distractions may cost you more than you realize. By staying focused you can detour yourself from losing sight of what’s in front of you. Keep your eyes on Jesus!

  24. A letter to my son- Read the instructions

This passage is full of great instruction given from a fathers heart. This one jumped out at me…

13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

If we cannot take instruction then we are going down an evil path. Rebellion is refusing instruction. You are told by your mom and dad, teachers, and pastor all your life to follow the instructions and it will all
Turn out ok. The wood if God is given to us as instruction and if we follow it then we will End up where the author intended for us to go. We just have to read the instructions.

  25. Valentin
1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.

Good Doctrine! Like a sweet smelling incense!

This is what God wants for us, is a solid foundation. The Word we believe is alive and is settled in the heavens. Many who believe that the Bible is full of contradictions does not attend to know understanding. They are deceive in there own wisdom. I can imagine my son in class listening to his teacher, being instructed. The as God teaches us when we emerge ourselves in His Word! There is nothing better that can satisfy ours souls then GOOD doctrine.

    Claudette
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

Jesus!!! Help me to keep walking forward in your path. When things go wrong I will not turn around I will keep having the Victory because you have given it to us already. He died for us so that my sins could be washed away. Thank you Jesus!!! Help me to bring people to Jesus, because your the only one that can restore them and open up their eyes Jesus!! I will keep walking forward Jesus!!!

  26. “Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life”. Instruction may not always be pleasant however, it may be, what is needed. Dear God, grant me the wisdom to welcome Godly instruction; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  27. “Get wisdom; develop good judgment. Don’t forget my words or turn away from them. Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you. Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4:5-7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

All of Gods laws and His word is so important and then all of the wisdom is a way not only to get understanding but more protection

  28. Protect your mind by thinking on good things. Sin usually start as just a thought and leads into an action.
“Don’t do as the wicked do, and don’t follow the path of evildoers. Don’t even think about it; don’t go that way. Turn away and keep moving.”

    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4:14-15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
    ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:8-9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

  29. The Power Of A Degree

10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.

11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.

12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

When we start on a right course, even if we notice only minor differences now, it will make a huge difference over the years. We can see how small differences in direction have large repercussions elsewhere, like when a space shuttle approaches reentry into the earth’s atmosphere. The angle of reentry is critical: if it is greater than 40 degrees, the craft could flip over backward from the atmospheric thrust; less, and it would risk entering the atmosphere too fast, and overheating and possibly melting its aluminum shell. Wisdom is our compass to help us stay on course as we apply the Word to our lives through the power of the Holy Ghost. The farther we follow wisdom, the more apparent the benefits are. Even varying our course by a single degree can mean the difference of where we spend eternity.

    Psalm 18:32-36
32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

33 He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.

34 He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.

36 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.

  30. 8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

In the message of God to Eli, in 1 Samuel 2:30, “Them that honour me I will honour.” Resembles the statement “she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her”. The idea is to honor her in order that she may embrace you. Why is wisdom compared or related to a gender here? More than likely it’s because of the nature of a female to nurture. He says to “embrace her” in a loving and affectionate manner, as a husband does his wife, or a son his mother. “Esteem and honour”, can elevate the confidence of others, and promotion to offices of trust are some of the rewards which Wisdom repays those who esteem and love her.

  31. 13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

Often times in life, people (especially us guys lol) have a tendency to try to figure things out on our own free will and not look at the instructions that come with it. Building a bicycle by scratch can be much easier if you follow the instructions that come with it.

God gives us instructions for life, and it’s called the bible. And when you follow the bible as instructions for your life, yo can’t just throw one part because you feel like you don’t need it. If you were to do that while building something like a bicycle, you’ll end up missing an important step and the whole bicycle will fall apart because one piece of it was built incorrectly, because one page of the instructions was scripted.

So let’s not let our lives fall apart because we decided we wanted to skip a page in the bible because we feel like we don’t need. God gave us every word of the bible for a reason, nothing is added or subtracted that shouldn’t be there, and we should apply the whole instruction of God into our lives.

  32. V 24

Heb “crookedness.” The noun עִקְּשׁוּת (’iqqéshut) refers to what is morally twisted or perverted. Here it refers to things that are said (cf. NAB “dishonest talk”; NRSV “crooked speech”). The term “mouth” functions as a metonymy of cause for perverse speech. Such perverse talking could be subtle or blatant.

Dishonest talk is frowned upon. Let us speak what is true.

  33. In this scripture, we are to pursue wisdom & understanding. We are to love wisdom and keep our feet from wisdom……….

    ***Love Wisdom***

  34. 3 For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

Solomon writes of how his father, David, instructed him as a boy. As the writer now of Proverbs, he has much wisdom to pass on even though as a man, he made mistakes and had flaws. And so we all do! However, if we keep the Lord’s commandments and an attitude of repentance, we can overcome them all!

  35. “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.”(Proverbs‬ ‭4:14‬ ‭KJV‬‬)

I am a child of God and not a slave of fear, I shall not step forth towards evildoers nor step on the path of wickedness. I shall advance and strive towards my desire and hunger for the Lord and continue my journey wherever God directs me. He will make my paths straight. His word is a light unto my feet and light unto my path. If we keep on the path of the Lord and you will not fall. He will not allow your foot to slip. I’ll develop myself and break through the barriers and obstacles through the trials that lay ahead for me. We conquer and overcome them by the by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.

  36. We should also see wisdom. Why do things if there is no wisdom after? If there is no wisdom then you continuously make the same ill chosen decisions. Wisdom is a gift. It allows us to trust God more and lean not to our own understanding.

  37. Proverbs 4:20-27
Heart is a term that includes mind, emotion and will. The decision is made in the inner being. But quickly shows forth th outer actions. There forth in outer actions. Luke 6:43 therefore the heart must be guarded carefully. Keeping the heart involves in what is said, v. 24 what is seen v. 25 and what is done vBulletin. 26,27
