Proverbs 13

1 A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

6 Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

7 There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

8 The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

9 The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

14 The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

15 Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

16 Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

17 A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

18 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

21 Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

23 Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.

24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

25 The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.

  1. It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them. Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭13‬:‭19-20‬ NLT)

  2. Verse 9 MSG “The lives of good people are brightly lit streets; the lives of the wicked are dark alleys.” Same verse AMP “The light of the righteous [within him—grows brighter and] rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked [is a temporary light and] goes out.” Same verse CEV “The lamp of a good person keeps on shining; the lamp of an evil person soon goes out.” Same verse NLT “The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.”

John 8:12 NLT “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” Follow Jesus and keep on shining for all to see.

  3. 9 the light of the righteous rejoiceth : but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. I pray that the light of JESUS always shines in me so that people I meet that don’t have his light will see.

  4. The soul of the diligent shall be made far.

When we provide a whole, open hard and laboring hands for God’s work and get busy, the rewards pour out in so many ways. Continuing to put your back into your work for the Lord will keep you satisfied. His rewards are to great to pass up.

Proverbs 13:10 KJV Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
    zâdôn
    zaw-done’
From H2102; arrogance: – presumptuously, pride, proud (man).

We must learn to become humble and we will avoid much of our unnecessary contentions that we get into

    matstsâh
    mats-tsaw’
From H5327; a quarrel: – contention, debate, strife.

Are we always getting into arguments and find ourselves connected to drama everyday? The answer might be a pride issue. In fact, the Word says “Only by Pride” comes contention.

  6. 3. Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything. NLT

Ever heard the saying, “We only think some people are ignorant, until they open their mouth and prove it”? I think a lot of those old saying come from these Proverbs. You may have an opinion on a subject, but that doesn’t mean you should say it out loud.

  7. “A refusal to correct is a refusal to love; love your children by disciplining them.”

    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭13:24‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Today’s parenting is so backwards nowadays. It’s easy to come across a child telling the parent what to do and the parent given into the child. This scripture encourages me to go against the grain and march to a different drum by correct my children with godly discipline and correction.

  8. 20 Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. (NLT)

This reminds of of how people say, “show me your closest friends and I’ll tell you what kind of a person you really are.” If we are constantly being tolerant and allowing our spirits to be exposed to bad influences, we eventually will grow more comfortable with things we know are wrong and begin to make excuses of how its ok. We are called to a higher calling and stand out from this world, to be examples of righteous living for others to follow. Don’t follow this world to destruction but step out and lead everyone around you to Jesus.

  9. 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

Amen the tongue is a very powerful tool that can be used for good or bad just like the bible says. You can’t use your mouth for blessing and cursing. Words are very powerful and if you say something wrong you will not be able to take it back. Let us be righteous and use our mouth for blessing only. “5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” James 3:5-6 Jesus control my tongue that it may not cause any hell on anybody Jesus!!! Let me speak how you speak Jesus and love how you love!!! Hallelujah!!!

  10. ARE YOU READY FOR THE WEALTH THAT THE LORD IS GOING TO GIVE TO YOU?????

18 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

Our Pastor has been trying so hard to get that poverty mentality out of our heads; but we go through life doubting, looking at our bank statement, and wondering why don’t we have any money. IT IS ALL ON THE ATTITUDE!!!! First, are we following God’s rules? Are we tithing with Joy? Are we giving an offering of sacrifice? Are we serving like we should, working for a better tomorrow, and putting a full armor of God as we work, and give 100% and do everything unto our God and Savior.

22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

As your read this verse you should be shouting THANK YOU JESUS!!!!!! All we have to do is work, do not be lazy, give you all unto the Lord for He is good and His Mercy endureth for ever. God will stand by you and when you least expected He will take the riches away from the wicked and bless the righteous with it. I rejoice knowing that my Lord has a blessing stored for me!!!!!!!!!! How about you??????

  11. THE SOURCE OF TROUBLE

10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

When HUMILITY rules ours emotions, hearts and lives, we avoid contention and trouble. HUMILITY yields to oncoming offense and gives room for the merge to happen. Pride is present somewhere when contention is present between 2 people.

To aviod or defer trouble we simply need HUMILITY. Humble ourselves from demanding our way. Give space for decisions to be made with out pressure or contention. We must ask ourselves the question; “Is this my will or GOD’s will?”

GOD’s will always determines what we should stand for and defend.

Choose HUMILITY and UNITY avoiding pride and contention.

  12. 20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

It is important the company we keep. When we surround ourselves with people that have similar passion and purpose, we find ourselves encouraging one another, lifting each other up and we gain knowledge and ideas from them. On the opposite side when we surround ourselves with people that are not similar in paths, it brings confusion and sometime destruction. That is why it is so important the friends that we surround ourselves with. If we only have worldly friends, or our best friends are worldly friends, who is influencing who? Are you bringing them to God or are they drawing you to the world? Is your house being built stronger or is it slowly deteriorating and falling down?

Choose wisely whom you walk with.

  13. 1 A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
18 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

These two verses warn against not listening to instructions. A popular myth maintains that people who know how to do things are able to teach others. Not true. It is a long way between knowing and doing. Intellectually understanding something does not guarantee its successful performance. I understand the theory of the internal combustible engine; that does not make me a good mechanic. However, the knowledge of the theory does afford me the wisdom to seek instruction from those with a practical or working knowledge rather than a theoretical knowledge.

The same goes for nearly everything else in our lives. Imagine yourself teaching someone how to drive a car. You tell the novice driver, “Start ‘er up.” Because you already know how to drive, you’re thinking in large units; the student is thinking in small units. The command, “Start ‘er up” has a very limited meaning. Your instruction assumes the student knows where the ignition is, how to insert the key, which way to turn the key, where the accelerator is, and how hard to press it. Each of these procedures is clear only if known.

How do I pray? How do I make it to Heaven? How do I raise Godly respectful children? Large unit questions with many small unit answers. Our Pastor provides instruction on many of these topics every time he speaks to us. Listen to his instructions and rebukes. He does not rebuke for the fun of it; it comes from love.

  14. 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

You should keep your mouth closed and not start problems with the things you say because once you open your mouth and could be that you hurt your self and other and another thing you could do by opening your mouth is curse at people and that whatvyou dif its gonna come back to you so just learn not get in peoples business and just try to keep your mouth closed because the tongue can be a powerfull weapon that benefit you or it can destroy you.

  15. 20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

You are who you spend time with! If you are walking with wise men, you shall be wise.

  16. 20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
One of my favorite quotes is “if you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.”

  17. 10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

When we have contention between us and our brother it would be best for us to look at ourselves and not place blame on the other person. Instead we should examine our own hearts for pride.

  18. Proverbs 13:13 (KJV)
“Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.”

    Proverbs 13:13 (AMP)
“Whoever despises the word and counsel (of God) brings destruction upon himself, But he who (reverently) fears and respects the commandment (of God) will be rewarded.”

Despise the word of God and die, or fear and respect the word of God and live.

  19. 25 The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.

Doing what’s right is the will of God. Living righteous and doing his will and not our will is what God wants us to do. Never the less if we allow unrighteousness in our lives then we fall into sin. Those surrounding us watch all we do and say, we should make wise choices, God is watching you. Lord you know what’s in our hearts, lead me and guide me to do your will and not my will.

  20. 17 A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

The very root of the word ambassador comes from the Old High Greman-ambaht which means service.
We must be faithful to service. To serve. When we are faithful there is health in the body of Christ. An ambassador is also one who has the highest authority, under a president, king, or highest ranking country official, in another country. We are ambassadors to the world. We are not of this world. We must live separate lives ,and hold ourselves to a higher standard.
Jesus is king of kings and lord of lords. And we are His children. This means we are the ambassadors to this world.

    More knowledge
    More understanding
    A higher calling

  21. 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

The mouth can be a powerful weapon or a beautiful blessing, it is up to us how we use it. Many people use their mouth to tear people down either to their face or behind their back. But we are called to be different in every way, including how we speak. Let’s use our mouths to lift people up, to encourage, and to pray for one another!! Lord help us to guard our mouths, that we would not speak in vain, but that we would speak of your joy and love everywhere we go!

  22. A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

LORD may we continually hear and obey your voice .

  23. He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
Becareful who you hang around, alot if time we can tell what you are by the kind of people you hang around.

  24. Oh, Lord Jesus, grant me this verse below so I can be wise too. I need wise companions or other fellow believers in my life especially at work.

20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

“God grant this I pray in Jesus’s name, Amen!”

  25. Great marriage advice!

3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

Sometimes you just have to shut up and go to bed. It all seams to be petty or irrelevant in the morning anyway. The devil attacks when your tired so shut up and get some sleep.

  26. “Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭13:10‬ ‭KJV

Ever wonder what that one person just can’t let things go? They have too much pride. Pride has you argue that you are right. Pride says let me do thuzLnjih

  27. “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭13:20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Youre who you hang out with. By hanging with others who strive to learn and grow spiritually, mentally and physically in God you can gain so much more than you would by hanging with people who remain content. I don’t want to stop growing. Let’s listen to the words and instructions of the wise. One day they will be gone and others will look to us to be leaders they can follow as well.

  28. Proverbs 13:3 (NLT)
    3 Those who control their tongue will have a long life;
opening your mouth can ruin everything.

    Proverbs 12:16 (NLT)
    16 A fool is quick-tempered,
but a wise person stays calm when insulted.

Accusations, insults, and name calling will happen. We are not the popular crowd. Jesus said we will be hated of all men for his name sake. Now we live in an age where people are quick to retaliate, defend themselves, and see for vindication. Many are extremely easy to offend.

What separates us from everyone else is our response to crisis. A child of God knows that God is in control and sees no need to lash back and someone’s hateful comments. We understand it isn’t us but Jesus that they are really lashing at.

Jesus said when we are rejected it is really him and not us.

  29. “A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame”. If lying doesn’t offend one, then one should pray to Jesus (Judge) why it doesn’t. Dear GOD, keep me far from; ; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

  30. Proverbs 13:14 amp
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death.

I once heard it said that a fool doesn’t learn from his mistakes. A smart man learns from his mistakes, but a wise man learns from others mistakes. I want to be wise and to learn from other wise people, that I may avoid the snares of death!

  31. 7 There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

That, I’m gonna insert family for “that”. How true is it that many people are unappreciated of the family they have. Many children are born though a careless action or an untimely event. These children are mistreated at times or neglected emotionally and many times physically. These surprised individuals have a true blessing from God, children. They are lent to us to instruct and raise and train up and love.
The flip side, you a have couples wishing they could have children and yet can not. Poor is a state of mind. Riches in earth are nothing by mere vanity. Riches stored in heavenly places are what makes a man truly rich. Doing what is right in the sight of God.

  32. “Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.

Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭13:20, 24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We should all watch out with who we hang with yes we should reach out to people and bring them to God, but just like my mother would always tell me…”influence them and lead them to right/good things…don’t let them influence you and bring you away from God.”
The first scripture connects with the second because with sparring the rod there is no discipline or guidance….so with spanking comes guidance to knowing right from wrong also guidance comes from the word of God and how He corrects us….there are multiple ways of using the “rod” which we need to use all of them…the first is of course spanking, but as one gets older they don’t need that physical spank they can have the verbal with correcting in words and in scripture.

be the influencer……mutiple rods in our lives

  33. 24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Correction is not to destroy but rather because you don’t want your loved one to fall in a path that will later greatly destroy them.

  34. Chasteneth !!!! 24. He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. Thank you Jesus for discipline !! Thank you for helping to keep us on the right path !! Thank you for the rod of correction !!

  35. 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

It does us no good for us to hold on to a hope and never work to see it fulfilled. God plants a burden in us, a calling and if we hear it and never answer it then we lose out and he will call another who will respond. We will feel fulfilled like a good and faithful servant when we step out in faith on that hope.

Heb 1:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen

  36. 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

It’s better to keep your mouth closed and not say anything, than to let yourself speak before you have time to think, and then once you realize what you just said, it’s already too late and if you have to face the consequences of it.

Us people can be quick to open their mouths and give their opinions on something, but a wise man discerns when is the right to speak or when is the right time to keep your thoughts to yourself and not voice them out loud.
