Genesis 16

1 Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee.

6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

7 And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

9 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

11 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.

12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

13 And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

14 Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

  1. When we get ahead of God’s timing and implement our own plans, we show our lack of faith and make a wreck of things, causing chain reactions and consequences we didn’t foresee.

  2. Then Sarai said to Abram, “This is all your fault! I put my servant into your arms, but now that she’s pregnant she treats me with contempt. The LORD will show who’s wrong—you or me!” (‭Genesis‬ ‭16‬:‭5‬ NLT)

Did Abram forget the promises of GOD, and preferred the voice of Sarai?

Then the LORD took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!” And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith. (‭Genesis‬ ‭15‬:‭5-6‬ NLT)

The trouble that we get ourselves in when we don’t wait on the LORD, And rush into things that we shouldn’t. Once trouble is here we always play the blame game, and never taking responsibility for our own mistakes.

When the time comes to make a decision, don’t be so quick to jump the gun. Seek GOD in all things first, be prayerful, and talk to the man that has authority over your spiritual life.

  3. 7 And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness by the fountain in the way to shur. No matter where we are and what we are going through God is always with us.

  4. Verse 13 MSG “She answered God by name, praying to the God who spoke to her, “You’re the God who sees me! “Yes! He saw me; and then I saw him!” The Lord knows where you are, what your going through and he already knows the outcome. Since we cannot always see the big picture, it is difficult for us sometimes; but, that’s where our faith in our Creator comes into play. Trust in the Lord and the promises that He has specifically just for you!

Genesis 16:1-3 KJV Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. (2) And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. (3) And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

There are some things that go without saying, men, you do not have to bad advice.

  6. Submission
9 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

The word submit is surely one of the most difficult, disliked, and divisive words in the Bible. In Ephesians Paul says to these Christians, “Submit to one another.” Whatever the word submit means, it’s something Paul thinks every Christian can and should do. He then illustrates how to submit by giving three examples: wives and husbands, children and fathers, and slaves and masters. Knowing the imbalance of power causes strife Paul offers a better solution, a way to move beyond power struggles. It’s called submission.

Paul suggests not resisting, resenting and rebelling; rather, respecting, honoring and working hard at pleasing the other person. And when you’re in a place of more power don’t hold it over the other person. Don’t use them to make your life easier. Instead, use your power to benefit them.

To me, submission means I voluntarily limit what I might do willfully in this relationship in order to benefit those with authority over me. If I have the authority, instead of doing what I want to do and use that power to make my life easier, I’ll use the authority instead to serve the other person.

  7. When we take things into our own hands!!!!

This is what happens when we do not want to be patient and wait for God’s timing and take things into our own hands. Disaster happens!!! In this case the Palestines were born Ishmael the father of all Palestines, the wild men, whose hands are lifted against every men and every men is against them. It is still like that today. Sarai could not wait for God’s promise took it into her own hands and gave birth to Israels life enemy. Let this be a lesson to always remember wait for God’s promises to come, wait patiently, His Promises are yeah and Amen, the price to pay for taking things into your own hands is a life time of grief. Lord help us to wait upon you knowing that your time is perfect In Jesus Name Amen

  8. As 6. The Lord is the God who see me . When we sense this when we know the lord is aware of our pain and need our strength Wii be renewed. For God not only see us. He sees the future. He promised Hagar that a bright future for her unborn son lay ahead. We to have hope for tomorrow what ever our pain today.

  9. 8 The angel said to her, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?” (NLT)

This sounds like God’s version of saying, “Well now what genius?” Sometimes submission can be real hard, but it’s what God desires of us. We must be willing to serve those over us and do it with a glad spirit, even when the one giving the orders may not fully appreciate the work. What we should never do is treat our authorities with such contempt that we force them to harshly discipline us and then we get mad because of what they’ve done to us. There’s a lot of fingers that can be pointed in many directions in this story but that’s not the point, blame doesn’t get anyone anywhere; just submit yourself to those over you.

  10. Psalm 27:14 Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.

Don’t force your blessing, don’t manipulate your way into a blessing, and don’t make your own blessing.

Just wait on the Lord, He’s timing is perfect and just! Wait joyfully. Praise Him for the waiting moment, praise Him in advance for the blessing on the way!

  11. 11 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

    The Muslims.

If you don’t already know. The Ismailites are now called Muslims. Does this not describe the majority of them. Wow. His hand against every man. And every man against him. The real problem in our world today is that the church has gotten to quiet about things of this earth; those things that are against God. Yet the Lord did say that he would multiply Ismail. He is true to his promises.

  12. Gen. 16:7 & 13-14
    7) And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
    13) And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth ne?
    14) Wherefore the well was called Beer-la-hai-roi, behold, it us between Kadesh and Bered.

Beer-la-hai-roi means “the well of the living one that seeth me,” a place in the desert.

This made me think of part of the song “Blessed be Your Name”
    And blessed be Your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
    Blessed be Your name

    Every blessing You pour out
    I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
    Still I will say

Blessed be the name if the Lord
    Blessed be your name, Jesus
Blessed be the name of the Lord
    Blessed be Your glorious name

When we find ourselves in a desert place or walking through the wilderness, all we have to do is go to the fountain of living water, to the well of the living one who sees us, and He will meet us there to refresh us and help us in our time of need.

Thank You JESUS! Blessed be Your Glorious Name!

  13. Because of Abram wanting to do Gods will in his own way. There is a man out there that can not be tamed they kill and murder the innocent. What if Abram just waited patiently for Gods will…

  14. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

After ten years, Sarai felt she had to take matters into her own hands, because Gods promise had not yet come to pass and she and her husband were old. Yet, God has his own timing, knows what he is doing – whether we do or not. This is when we must walk by faith and not by sight, trusting the promises he has given us. In this case, two great nations now fight over the one promise given to Abram of owning all the land he was shown by God.

  15. Glory!!!! Seek first God before any decision!!!! If we let Him Jesus will guide us and tell us what is wrong and what is right! Jesus is the answer to enduring and when in trouble and you may seem confused. Pastor is there to direct us…. very blessed to be in this church because if you make a mistake or do your own will is because you wanted it that way not because there is nobody to help you. I praise and thank God for a Pastor who really did care for all the sheep!!!! Lets Be Sensitive and Do Gods Will even if it may seem impossible!!! With God NOTHING is imoossible!!!!!

  16. 9 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

    Romans 13:2-7
Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

Submitting to authority is the will of God for every man and believer. When we resist authority we are going against the natural way that God wanted it to be.

  17. Genesis 16: The angel of the Lord found Hagar bear a spring in the desert, it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. And he said Hagar slae of Sarai where hae yoycome from and where are you going? I’m running away from my mistress safari she answered. Then the angel of the Lord too ger. Go back to your mistress and submit to get. The angel added,I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.

  18. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her.

As I read this I am reminded of my grandad’s message, the consequences of a bad decision. When we do not wait on God’s timing we will get ourselves into a mess. It’s important that we come to God before making any decision. Impatience won’t speed up anything,. We mustn’t doubt in the promises of God, He always shows up on time!!

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Lord help us to be patient, and wait on your timing and not on ours!

  19. 3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

If God promised us something then we can be sure that it’s going to come to pass. Not by our own wills or time but in His. Abraham was 75 when God promised him an heir and it will be about another 25 years before he has Isaac. I believe Sarai and Abram didn’t get their miracle son until after a test of faith was made. We see here that their struggle is accepting, patiently waiting and not challenging God to keep His promise. Both look to God as the One who is able to perform. The “non-faith” response is simply to ignore God because you no longer think He is a factor. Trusting God is having faith in Him, His timing and promisies.

  20. 1 Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
Trouble brews when we start to meddle and interfere with God’s plan for us. Let Him do all the work, He knows what is best.

  21. v9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hand.

There is power in submitting !!!
We might be uncomfortable where we are right now, but
Praise GOD we have a promise that is greater than our problem.

  22. So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
    Genesis 16:2 NKJV
    http://bible.com/114/gen.16.2.NKJV

The Lord said that it was not good for man to be alone and created a help meet for him and gave him a wife. I was reminded immediately of the first couple created. God has placed authority at the hands of men, but women are great influence to him. In both examples, Adam and Eve, and here Abram and Sarai, the man heeds to the voice of influence. Women should pay close attention to what type of power of influence they have over the authority in their lives. Men should be wise to consider and consult God for everything. We know that God had already given Abram a promise to have an heir out of his own bowels but the Lord did not say it was gonna be his wife’s maidservant. The Lord is very detailed by nature. Hence we have the instructions given to Noah in about the arc, the tabernacle latter on, the book of numbers. There is detail so Men must make sure we are listening to the voice of God, the Word of God.

  23. Genesis 16:3

And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

Abraham chose to compromise the plan of God and as a result married his mistake. Not only was Abraham at fault because he lied to Abimilech and received Hagar as consolation, but he also listened to his wife and not the voice of God for direction.

God said he would do it and Abraham jumped the gun forming his own opinions. We must learn to trust that God will perform what he said and he knows how he will bring it to pass.

Abraham’s son Ishmael’s name means God will hear. In other words he is listening and knows.

  24. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “The LORD has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her.” And Abram agreed with Sarai’s proposal.

Being impatience will get you into alot of trouble. Yes many years had passed and still no results. Sarai took matters on here own. Men, yes we should listen to our wives, but at the same time pray to God, and listen for his voice. Obey God’s voice over your wife, and things will turn out so much better. But explain and speak to your wife also!

  25. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

Abraham had the promise of God that his descendants would number like the stars in the sky, but despite this, he let himself be convinced that he needed to speed up the process and used a short cut or easy way out to try and make it happen.

Trust in God and his promises, if God said it would, it’s gonna happen, all we have to do is make sure that we don’t get ahead of ourselves. It’s good to be proactive, but we need to listen to the voice of God and see when he wants us to move.

  26. WHERE YOU GOING

Hagar was wounded and offended, she decided to “Run AWAY” from her problems. Like most people even today when wounded and offended people “Run AWAY” from their problems they end up going nowhere and finding nothing and really need to return, repent and submit.

Hagar found a fountain in the wilderness. GOD seems to always ocherstrate a place of refreshing on a journey to nowhere.

    Hagar was headed to Shur.

Shur – 7793. Shuwr, shoor; the same as 7791; Shur, a region of the Desert:—Shur. 7791. shuwr, shoor; a wall (as going about):—wall.

Hagar was headed to a WALL in the DESERT.

To “Run AWAY” means to “Run TO a WALL” in a DESERTED Place.

We should always seek to “Run to JESUS”

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  27. 9 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

After Sarai just despised Hagar, an Angel of the Lord came to her and said go back, and submit yourself to her. So many times God puts in a place where we are uncomfortable and everything doesn’t feel right and our feelings are hurt.
That’s where we need to deal with what’s ahead instead of running an hiding. Gods working it out for our good. Hang in there sunshine joy comes in the morning.

  28. “And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.” The word of God (Jesus) will reveal much, as one can clearly see his descendant’s actions today. However one can also see there is a line of authority; “But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.” Dear God, open my eyes and ears to more of you and your word; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

  29. And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee.

6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face
There is always consequences to sin, sarai was getting impatient, not understanding what Gods plan was for their life. God knows best, we just need to trust God thru it.

  30. 4 He had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai.

This was a very common practice in the culture. A man would get a “surrogent” pregnant to produce an heir for him. The barren wife would take the baby from the servant and raise the child as her own. Thus, she would have a child through her servant. This was common in the Babylonian culture and other cultures in the 2nd and 3rd millennium B.c.

  31. “Sarai, Abram’s wife, hadn’t yet produced a child. She had an Egyptian maid named Hagar. Sarai said to Abram, “ GOD has not seen fit to let me have a child. Sleep with my maid. Maybe I can get a family from her.” Abram agreed to do what Sarai said.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭16:1-2‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Just because you don’t see the promise given to you come to pass as quickly as anticipated doesn’t permit you the right to control the situation. God does not lie. When the time is right, your promise will come to pass.

  32. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

I am guilt of placing judgement on Sarai because of her lack of faith. Yet, in reality Sarai knew the prophesy but God did not reveal the details plainly. When I read this story I am aware of the outcome of the situation. yet Sarai does not. She knows that God will fulfill His promise to her husband but is unsure of how. In her mind her circumstances out weigh the covenant God made with her husband.

Today I realize it is wiser for me to observe Sarai’s mistake and learn from it. When God speaks to me it is my responsibility to keep my mind on Him and His Word because it will destroy the lack of faith. It will also cause me to understand that even when my circumstances do not align with the Word He spoke to me, I can hold fast to the fact that His word is forever settled in heaven and it’s by my faith and prayers that I release His Word into my life to take root and perform the work.

  33. Angel of the LORD 7. And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 8. And he said, Ha’-gar, Sa’-rai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go ? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sa’-rai. 9. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. 10. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. Gen. 17 : 20 11. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ish’-ma-el; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. LORD I LOVE YOU !!

  34. The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.” Then he added, “I will give you more descendants than you can count.”
    Genesis 16:9-10 NLT

Sometimes we might not agree with our leaders, or even our leaders treat us kindly but there is a promise that God has for us all we have to do is submit to our leaders.
