Genesis 17

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.

24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.

27 And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.

  1. 5. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

    6. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

    15. And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

    16. And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

I’ve heard the term ‘game changer’, but this news was so big it was a ‘name changer’!

  2. In reading this chapter, it made me think about relationship and obedience. What an awesome relationship Abram had with God. There have been to very special ladies that we have been blessed to know growing up. My sister always jokingly says “They have a direct line to God”. It is because of their powerful relationship with God….they are both (one has already met her reward) powerful prayer warriors and have many years of wisdom. Yes, Abraham laughed at the thought of having a child with his wife at their age; but, he never stopped believing or stuttered in his obedience.

  3. Abram fell on his face , and God talked with him, saying

Sometimes you have to fall on your face to hear what God is saying to you. Sometimes he needs to bend your ear to the ground, in a humbling position to get the specifics across to you.

  4. iLove to eat More Word
Genesis 17:9-10 NLT Then God said to Abraham, “Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility. (10) This is the covenant that you and your descendants must keep: Each male among you must be circumcised.

This is a true covenant. God has his part to uphold and the people have their part. The same is true for today. Gods part of the new Testament is to fill people with the Holy Ghost and mens part is to be baptized in the mighty name of Jesus.

  5. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

The covenant made with Abraham was a covenant of the cutting away of the flesh to signify separation from the rest of people. The covenant that we have with God is the cutting away of the flesh of our heart, choosing to cut those things that signify the world from our lives and being a separate people, called out, chosen to walk in the Rtitude of holiness, righteousness and seperation.

  6. And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

If you need answers fall on your face before God. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

  7. Is laughter the best medicine… or is faith the best medicine

17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

According to doctors, we change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster. However, there are no proven studies that show laughter is the best medicine but plenty of people believe in it. I don’t believe God was doing a “stand-up” routine when Abraham fell upon his face and laughed. It is our imaginative limitation of what God can do that makes the supernatural seem far-fetched, unbelievable or silly.

    Why?

God has proven over and over again He can and does more “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think”. Faith is more than positive thinking. Positive thinking will NOT produce faith. Faith is trust in God, and the only way to develop faith is to learn to know God. Since He is trustworthy, as we learn to know Him, we spontaneously learn to trust Him. Faith is trusting God when things don’t turn out the way we expect. You can’t work on your righteousness – nor can you work on your faith. Both are gifts. Both are fruit. Both come as a result of a personal relationship with Jesus. And knowing Jesus comes as a result of spending time and fellowship and relationship with Him.

  8. 4 “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations!

9 Then God said to Abraham, “Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility. (NLT)

In verse 4 God tells Abraham, “This is my covenant WITH you,” and then in verse 9, God explains Abraham’s responsibility and side of the covenant. So often we chose to forget that covenants are two sided; God did not say to Abraham, “this is my covenant FOR you,” but WITH. We must remember to do our part and keep ourselves separated from this world.

  9. A God that Blessed 2 Nations

God from the start said he will bless the fruit of Abraham. Abraham and Sarah because of their impatience had Ishmael with the Egyptian slave. God will ALWAYS keep His promises so He blessed Ishmael and made him a father to a nation just not His Nation that one belonged to Isaac.

May we always trust our God and His Promises, knowing that His promises are yeah and Amen no matter what. In Jesus Name AMEN!!!

  10. 9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

If we keep our covenant we have with God, he will bless us. One thing that God can never change is his word he has given us, so it is something we need to hold onto.

  11. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

    The name change!

  12. The first command God makes here to Abram is “walk before me, and be thou perfect” (vs1)
‘IF’ you do so I will make a covenant with you , and you will be the father of many nations and kings. He would become a new person just as God changed his name to Abraham the same way we become a new creation after recieving His Holy Spirit. Like most covenants their is a token or sign, here being the circumsion of flesh. This is the seperation from the selfish carnal man (Deut 10:16; Jer 4:4). Anyone in his household, and those bought by him (slaves) needed to be circumcised, and anyone who is uncircumcised will be cut off for breaking covenant. How can two walk together unless they agree where they go? Same principal applies to circumsion because our light and lifestyle of holiness/seperation shines for a beacon to reach to those in darknes.

  13. 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

HALLELUJAH!!!! Never laugh or doubt God because He js able to do the impossible. Abraham laughed in his heart but yet God heard him. Jesus knows or hearts and knows or intentions. When we truly complete and know that He is able to do everything He will move. Nothing is to hard for my God!!!!! Things might seem hard or impossible for man but when we trust completely in him miracles will happen!!! Don’t let the enemy steal your faith, joy, trust, love, passion, vision, etc. He is God and His mercy endures forever!!!!!!

  14. Gen 17:1-4
    1) AND when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
    2) And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
    3) And Abram fellow his face: and God talked with him, saying,
    4) As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

    WWYD
What Would You Do if God appeared and spoke to you and said, “I am the Almighty God, walk before me and be thou perfect.?” I think I would fall down on my face before Almighty God too.
Abram humbled himself and fell on his face before God. Because he did, God lifted him up by telling him that he would be a father of many nations. He would be exceedingly fruitful, he would make of him nations, kings would come out of him, and he would establish His covenant with him and his seed after him.

If we humble ourselves before God, He will lift us up too.
James 4:10, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
1Peter 5:6, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.”

  15. 16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

Abraham and Sarah are closer now to receiving the promise they’ve longed for even though they probably believed until this time that Ishmael was this promised seed. What this speaks to me is that God doesn’t forget his promises-he knows when they’re coming even though we don’t-and even though we may give up on them, his word is true. Here Abraham hears the promise of a son with Sarah and yet like any parent, stills wants his other child to be blessed by God. What are our promises from God? Hold onto them, they will come.

  16. Genesis 7:15 Then God said to Abraham, As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for generations to come. This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep. Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to bean everlasting covenant.

  17. A covenant. A promise

One of the greatest opportunities with a covenant is obedience. Not only was Abraham to covenant with God but all those of his house hold. And he did so. Thank you Jesus for the covenant that you have set before us. The promises of your return.

  18. MORE CONSCIENCE OF GOD

3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

The VOICE and WORD of GOD caused Abram to assume the posture of REPENTANCE (fell on his face). In return caused GOD to give prophetic direction of PROMISE to Abram and a change of identity from Abram to Abraham.

True, sincere repentance will change our identity. Lets be prayerful to assume the proper posture before the LORD. Hear HIS voice and follow HIS words.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  19. 1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
    (Genesis 17:1 KJVStrongs)

The word perfect doesn’t mean without error, but rather wholeness.

h8549. תָּמִים ṯâmîym; from 8552; entire (literally, figuratively or morally); also (as noun) integrity, truth:— without blemish, complete, full, perfect, sincerely (- ity), sound, without spot, undefiled, upright (- ly), whole.
    AV (91)- without blemish 44, perfect 18, upright 8, without spot 6, uprightly 4, whole 4, sincerely 2, complete 1, full 1, misc 3;
complete, whole, entire, sound complete, whole, entire whole, sound, healthful complete, entire ( of time) sound, wholesome, unimpaired, innocent, having integrity what is complete or entirely in accord with truth and fact ( neuter adj/subst
    ( STRONG)

Only God can truly complete us. It takes action on our part to become whole, and only walking with God can make us whole. He created us with a void that only he can feel. This is evidenced by the yearning and longing that all mankind feels daily.

This also reveals our dependance upon him. We in and of ourselves are not capable of filling this voice no matter how hard we try. Relationship with Jesus is the missing piece to an empty heart.

  20. 20 As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

Yes, God blessed Abraham as the father of many. But he also blessed Ishmael. So God will bless all who are obedient to him.

  21. Name switch Abram to Abraham 1. AND when A’-bram was ninety years old and nin e, the LORD appeared to A’-bram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply, thee exceedingly. 3. And A’-bram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4. As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 5. Neither shall thy name any more be called A’-bram, but thy name shall be A’-bra-ham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. Neh. 9 : 7 I THANK YOU LORD FOR ALLOWING ME TO TAKE A BREATH TODAY ON THIS EARTH !!!!

  22. When God blesses he doesn’t do it small. Abraham was blessed because of his relationship with God. If we can build that type of relationship with God, we can get blessings beyond what we’ve ever imagined.

  23. 18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

The word of God (Jesus) said he heard, and did, as was asked.

One that cannot see the necessity and blessings of prayer; truly does not see. Dear God, awaken me to the hour in which we live, and too truly see the necessity for more prayer and more united prayer; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

  24. When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.”
    Genesis 17:1-2 NLT

If we want to have countless blessings all we have to do is, serve him faithfully and have a blameless life. The blessings will even reach our descendant s.

  25. When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the sovereign God. Walk before me and be blameless.

Prophetic words from God are often for the distant future. They are the direction of life not the immediate circumstance. Hold onto your promises from God.

  26. 17:1-8 Since the covenant is “everlasting” and includes. Possession of Canaan, it guarantees Israel the right of possession as an earthly inheritance forever. God is the Landlord who gives the title deed to Israel, His son. Thus, the Jews have a rightful claim to this land as long as the earth shall stand.

  27. “Abraham fell flat on his face. And then he laughed, thinking, “Can a hundred-year-old man father a son? And can Sarah, at ninety years, have a baby?””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭17:17‬ ‭MSG

Do not mock what God promises will come to pass.

  28. vvs. 26-27 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.
And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with mo ey of the stranger, were circumcised with him.

GOD promised to provide for Abraham and his family and to Bless all nations through them.
We see that the promise held responsibilities as well as opportunities.

  29. “”You are now living in Canaan as an outsider. But I will give you the whole land of Canaan. You will own it forever. So will your children after you. And I will be their God.””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭17:8‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Rejoicing in knowing that we have territory still to conquer. There are areas that we are currently outsiders but soon POFW will start daughter works.

When we submit to God, our identity changes. We are no longer filthy sinners, we are the children of God.

  31. well I don’t know how I managed to make that ^^^ happen!!

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

  32. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

    Name changing experience

When God changed a person’s name and gave him a new name, it was usually to establish a new identity. God changed Abram’s “high father” name to “Abraham,” “father of a multitude” and his wife’s name from “Sarai,” “my princess,” to “Sarah,” “mother of nations”. We know from history that the descendants of Abraham and Sarah formed many nations.

Most people have pride in there name, it’s usually because of they of who the father or mother is or was. Sometimes as Christians we tend to forget we have put on a new nature and name. We are not from this world when we are in Christ. Why is it them that we act like our old self, clinging to it forgetting who we belong to. That’s why we feel shameful when our conscience gets the best of us.

We need to Never forget our Father, who paid a high price for our redemption.

  33. 15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

What seems impossible for man is where God gets all the glory…  Why wait till Sara was 90 years old?  Well it may just be that it was the only way that no human may take credit.  An impossibility is just a way for God to show his greatness.  Impossible is nothing with Him.  What kind of faith do we have?  Will it be the kind that moves mountains.  We talk and say yes he is the creator of all things but will we trust when it comes down to our situation..?
