Genesis 19

1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,

7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

  1. But his wife looked back behind him and she became a pillar of salt.

When God is taking you out of an ungodly situation, don’t look back even for a moment and mourn. Rejoice in the Lord for he has brought you out.

  2. “But God had listened to Abraham’s request and kept Lot safe, removing him from the disaster that engulfed the cities on the plain.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭19:29‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God listened to the prayers of Abraham. I wonder how many times pastor has prayed for us and God has interceded for us and we thought that it was because of our own good word that we were delivered. Just quite possibly could’ve been our pastor making intercession for us .

  3. Every enemy is born out of disobedience!!!

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

The Palestines were born out of the impatience and lack of faith of Sarah and Abraham. Now the Moabites and the Ammonites are born out of insest and lack of faith. Be careful of the actions you take out of doubt, impatience, and lack of faith. Wait on the Lord for His timing is perfect. Lord help us be more obedient, help us not to have any doubt, and to know that your promises are yeah and amen. In Jesus Name AMEN

  4. lots lack of integrity is also revealed in his daughters incestuous plan following the destruction of the city. What did Lot gain by compromising his convictions. The wealth and the ease he sold them out. not at all. Our last glimpse of Lot shows him destitute and drunk lying senseless in a mountain cave.

  5. Gen. 19:15-16
    15) And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
    16) And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

    Lamentations 3:22-23
    22) It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumes, because his compassions fail not.
    23) They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Where would we be today if it hadn’t been for the Mercy of God? We would still be lingering in and consumed by sin.
But, Thanks be to God for His M ERCY! It’s only because of His Mercy that we are not consumed by our sins. He Loves us so much that He forgave us of our sins. His Mercy and Love for us are new ever morning. Great is His Faithfulness!

Thank You JESUS for Your MERCY, LOVE, and FAITHFULNESS!

  6. Lot began valuing the view of the valley.
but Grace broke through, and God Called Him to the Mountain!

17:.. look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

    ESCAPE TO THE MOUNTAIN

We all desire the salvation of the mountain, but are we ready for the cost?

Lot chose middle ground. He chose Zoar, in between the valley and the mountain. Although still in grace, He was no where near where he was CALLED to be.

Don’t ignore the Call to the Mountain.
You are called to Stand Out!

Lot’s wife turned after her feet were standing in salvation. She died because she looked at the valley.

    Remember Lot’s wife –
    You are Called.

  7. Don’t look back!!

    24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

The only reason we should ever look back is, to see and rejoice in how far we’ve come. We should never look back and dwell in where He brought us out of. If God still wanted us there, we would still be there. Thank you Lord for bringing us out of that life and setting out feet on a new path! What a mighty God we serve!

  8. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

    The allure of the past.

When we are asked, “If you go through time where would you go?” It’s usually the past that most want to go to. But why? To change the past means you become someone different. Your experiences change therefore you become some one different. Why not go to the future? To see who you become.

Your past is your past. And if you keep your focus on the past the present becomes the past. Then you say where did that come from? The future becomes the present that eventually becomes the past. So when we are looking forward towards the future, it becomes our present. That we experience. Then it becomes our past. So keep looking and moving forward.

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.
We keep moving forward, opening new doors and doing new things, because we are curious…. And curiosity leads us down new paths.
    Walt Disney

Look towards God for his direction and be curious on where he is leading you.

  9. THE DESTROYER

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.

GOD hears the cries of an evil world. Sin cries from the ground.

Genesis 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

GOD hears the cries of sin from the earth and HE will judge.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  10. 27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

If it wasn’t for the prayers of Abraham Lot and his family would have been destroyed when Sodom/Gomorrah was consumed with fire. Never think that your prayers are unheard. God hears every prayer and answers according to his plan and purpose.

I’m sure Abraham, not knowing whether Lot and his family got out in time, wondered as well did his prayers do any good. But our responsibility is to pray. We can’t make people do something or make God do something, we can only do our part.

  11. 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

The angels of the Lord warned Lot and his family twice (vs 14&15). At Lot’s hesitation the angels grabbed them by the hand and lead them out of the city. Two things they commanded them to do was #1 Do not look behind thee #2 escape to the mountain. Lot’s wife looked back and she turned to a pilar of salt. Lot bargained to flee to Zoar. Later when he and his daughters go to the mountain incest occured and tainted rest of his family line. They may have left Sodom but Sodom’s sin still lived in them. It does no good for the believer to leave a life of sin to long for or return to it. When we repent we turn away for good. When we are baptised we die to the old sinful life. When we recieve the Holy Ghost we are a new creation. Save your family. Get to the mountain!

  12. “But Lot protested, “No, masters, you can’t mean it! I know that you’ve taken a liking to me and have done me an immense favor in saving my life, but I can’t run for the mountains—who knows what terrible thing might happen to me in the mountains and leave me for dead. Look over there—that town is close enough to get to. It’s a small town, hardly anything to it. Let me escape there and save my life—it’s a mere wide place in the road.””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭19:18-20‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Why do we try to argue with people who are trying to protect us? Our leadership covenant may state we should or should not do this or that. This rules are not there to prevent us from having fun. They are there to prevent us from failing to resist temptation.

When someone discourages us from doing something, we often feel that our freedom is being threatened, which motivates us to regain choice and control by doing exactly the opposite. I have found that children become more interested in a toy after they’re told not to play with it. As Mark Twain once wrote, “Adam was but human… He did not want the apple for the apple’s sake, he wanted it only because it was forbidden

  13. It would appear that Lot did not rise his daughters well. I cannot for the life of me place why they would think such a thing. I suppose these cities were all they knew and the destruction of them made them think the world was over. I suppose when we lose almost everything we have ever known we are possible of all kinds of bad decisions. May we learn from this and chose to abide in God and not our own sight.

  14. “Lot was dragging his feet. The men grabbed Lot’s arm, and the arms of his wife and daughters— GOD was so merciful to them!—and dragged them to safety outside the city. When they had them outside, Lot was told, “Now run for your life! Don’t look back! Don’t stop anywhere on the plain—run for the hills or you’ll be swept away.””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭19:16-17‬ ‭MSG‬‬

If God sees you taking your time or dragging your feet to get to your destination, He might just have to give you a nudge or two. Don’t think God is rushing you, but rather for seeing an altercation or a means of danger that can be avoided by hastening your pace. When God makes a way there is no point in waiting. Keep moving forward!

  15. “And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.” Lot was spared because of Abraham relationship with God (Jesus). One may never realize the significance of the relationship between God and the man of God, until. Dear God, let me be mindful of the importance of the man of God, and his relationship with you; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

  16. Genesis 19:16

When Lot still hesitated, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and rushed them to safety outside the city, for the Lord was merciful.

The Angels seized the family. This was done forcefully and abruptly. They were saved but as it were ejected from the city. This is described as a merciful act.

However this was not done because of Lot but because of Abraham. Lot in the act of deliverance disobeyed the Angels and asked to go to Zoar. He ran to the mountains and didn’t seek God. He may have kept himself clean but his daughters were corrupted by the city.

Lot is never mentioned again unfortunately.

We can be encouraged by watching lot to know what not to do. Lot would have never needed deliverance had he stayed with Abraham. Stick with the man of God and obtain from all appearance of evil.

  17. 27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

    God remembered.

This is encouraging. For all those that have prayed and talked to God about their families God has not forgotten. He upholds the relationships we have with him and honors those prayers.

  18. 20. Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

Don’t try to stay too close to what God has brought you out of. Sometimes the best thing you can have from your past is distance.

  19. 24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:
The lord rained in sodom and Gomorrah fire and brimstone, he will do the same in our time. This world has become just as evil and sinful, man marrying man, and women marrying woman. God is frowning upon this world. The saints of the most high should be praying for God to come back quickly, not falling in love with this world like lots wife. This world is not my home, I’m just passing through! Hallelujah!

  20. 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

I was reminded of the scriptures in proverbs:
“It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭31:4-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬
    http://bible.com/1/pro.31.4-5.kjv

The dangers of drinking are tremendous…it perverts your judgment and makes you do things contrary to human nature. If some one was to ask you why you as a Christian don’t drink let them know what the scripture says.

  21. 24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Don’t look back on the past but look towards the blessings that God is giving you right now and what he has in store for you in the future

  22. Wow what a terrible fate. After his wife died his daughters took advantage of him. This is the twisted stuff that happens in lives when people begin to look toward the world. Lot began to turn to the world for guidance earlier. Then he let the world call the shots. DANGEROUS THING.
