Genesis 28

1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

2 Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughers of Laban thy mother’s brother.

3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;

4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughers of Canaan;

7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;

8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.

12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:

22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

  1. 17. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

    Dreadful – original word: Yaw-ray’ – to stand in awe of: be awed with fear, reverence, honor and respect.

    Too often we take God’s house for granted and fail to give it the honor and respect that God expects. No matter how often we go, it doesn’t change what it is or how it should be treated and approached. Every house of God is a dreadful place; never because of who built it or what it looks like, but because of the Holy One to whom it belongs.

  2. Isaac blessed Jacob and sends him to his mother’s relatives to find a wife. God appears to Jacob at Bethel to confirm transmission of his covenant with Abraham to Jacob . Sawed Jacob commits himself to the Lord. Keep on trusting when life takes.an.unexpected turns. 28-15. We can claim this promise as God’s New Covenant.people.

  3. BORDERLINE OBEDIENCE

    6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughers of Canaan;
    7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;
    8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;
    9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

    Esau was caught in the trap of self will verses submission. No doubt Esau had heard the history of the family and the division of Ishmael and Issac. However, seeing the opportunity of almost, but not quite. Esau took a wife that was not a Canaanite, but also of the the rejected Ishmael. No doubt further grieving his father, the ailing Isaac.

    When Esau heard of this blessing and the sending away of Jacob, and saw therein the displeasure of his parents at his Hittite wives, he went to Ishmael—i.e., to the family of Ishmael, for Ishmael himself had been dead fourteen years—and took as a third wife Mahalath, a daughter of Ishmael (called Bashemath in Gen. 36:3, a descendant of Abraham therefore), a step by which he might no doubt ensure the approval of his parents, but in which he failed to consider that Ishmael had been separated from the house of Abraham and family of promise by the appointment of God; so that it only furnished another proof that he had no thought of the religious interests of the chosen family, and was unfit to be the recipient of divine revelation.

    Relationships are very important in our society and any relationship outside of a committed, godly connection is bound for trouble. We are wise to seek counsel in relationships. Submission is the key to finding proper relationship in the Kingdom of GOD.

  4. 1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

    Isaac followed the instructions given by his father to his son. He told the vision plain. so there was no misunderstandings. We must be clear and concise about what we believe and why. There should be no room for doubt or confusion. God’s word tells us to hide His word in our hearts that we might now sin against him. How will we know if we are doing something against the word of God if we never open the book, study and learn what His word says.

    What will we pass on to our sons and daughters? We must pass on truth and the reasons why we believe what we believe, so that they will understand and pass the same on to their families.

  5. Promises of God are yeah and Amen

    13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

    Whether you know it or not God is always at your side. He will give you what He said He would and He will take it away if you value it more than Him. The most important thing is obedience to His Word and everything else shall be added. Jacob stop being the liar, the swindler he was to become a father of a nation. Esau by his rebellion became the second father of the Arab nation enemies to the isrialites to today. Lord help us be more conscience of your present, to be O didn’t to your word, and know that no matter what happens we must trust that you will do what you said you would. In Jesus Name AMEN

  6. Genesis 28:6

    When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;

    Genesis 28:20-21

    And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

    So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:

    In this passage the character of both boys becomes evidently clear. Esau not willing to accept his fate leaves his father and moves in with his uncle whom his father kicked out. This seems to be that Esau knew he couldn’t get the blessing from his Daddy but he could be more blessed with Ishmael. Also he knew his father wasn’t pleased with his choice of wife. Instead of repenting he ran and chose a life separate from the man of God.

    Jacob now having the blessing has a supernatural visitation in the form of a portal to heaven. He is watching the Angels going back and forth from the spiritual to the natural. Yet in the midst of this amazing site Jacob’s character shines as he opts to make a deal with God. He says if you do this then I will serve you. This means that just like everyone else he has come in contact with he thinks God will bend to his ultimatum. The difference between Esau and Jacob is that Jacob repents and allows God to shape his life.

  7. iLove to eat More Word

    Genesis 28:8 (NLT) It was now very clear to Esau that his father did not like the local Canaanite women. 9So Esau visited his uncle Ishmael’s family and married one of Ishmael’s daughters, in addition to the wives he already had. His new wife’s name was Mahalath

    Wow, look at the heart of Esau. Extremely wicked to purposely go against the father and mother that he loved in order to bring them grief. Parents, if you think your kids are intentionally trying to bring you unnecessary grief, you might be right. Maybe its cushion whoopin time.

  8. And Jacob vowed a vow saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

  9. Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughers of Canaan;

    7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;
    People notice when we obey.

    God will provide for us regardless of our state of life.

  10. Genesis 28:10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. When he reached a certain place he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord and said : I am the Lord the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth and you will spread out to the west and to the east to north and to the south.

  11. 22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

    The tithe is the Lord’s… We see here how Jacobo bowed that he will give the tenth of everything God would give him…. Well guess what our jobs, and blessings we get from others and whatever other increase is given by God since the Earth is the Lord’s and everything that dwells there in. Here is another clear example to bring the tenth to the house of God.

  12. Gen. 28:20
    “And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in the way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, ”

    St. Matt. 6:31-33
    31) Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? Or, What shall we drink? or Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
    32) (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
    33) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

    Thank You Pastor for the Word today.
    God’s kingdom comes first, and he will take care of us.

  13. “Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I wasn’t even aware of it!” But he was also afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven!””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭28:16-17‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    Lord, I want to be more aware of your presence. Let me hear your voice and smell your fragrance.

  14. He said it clearly, he won’t leave us and assured us he is with us…….

    15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

    It was also mentioned of the tithe….keep giving!

  15. 17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

    18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

    19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
    Jacob had a supernatural experience that day that changed his life. He was so effected by it that he called the place Bethel which means “House of God” Or “Sanctuary; sacred place” That place meant something special in his life and in our lives we should all have some special experience with God that we can hold on to.

  16. “And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.” Jacob was told by God (Jesus) what would be done, and we know today it was. One that is told by God as Jacob was, should therefore have no doubt. Whereas one that is not, could be found wanting. Dear God, help me to seek you while you may be found; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

  17. What a mess!

    9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

    This is the added hatred to the Muslim faith. It began with Ishmael being put out of Abrahams house. The Muslims believe he was the promise of God and now Esau who was also , in their eyes, supposed to be the blessed one has joined into the family. The beginning of the religion that is trying to tear us down today started with these angry should have beens trying to get back at the ones that were truly blessed. The devil doesn’t like when you fool his plans. This story just affirms once again that we have got the victory from the beginning.

  18. “And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭28:13-15‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    God will always do what he says. It is only up to us to see if we believe him or not. As we trust we show God our faith. Let’s boldly show our faith in the promises of the Lord! He is always with us leading us forward if we will follow.

  19. 14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

    15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

  20. Discovery

    As Jacob first begins to journey from his father’s house to establish an adult life of his own, he has an encounter with God that leaves him stirred up. He makes a vow with God in the beginning discovery of God for himself. It was not his father’s relationship with God or his mother’s or his collective family’s but his own. We all must start somewhere in our walk with God, no matter if we came to Him later in life or were born into a church-going family—and at times we must even find a place to re-start if we find ourselves having strayed from God or if perhaps we find ourselves in a particularly tumultuous season where life is so turned upside down that even God seems to have changed His phone number.

    Psalm 24:3-7
    3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?

    4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

    5 He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

    6 This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.

    7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

  21. In reading this chapter yesterday, it brought to mind how obedience (down to the simplest things) brings forth blessings; even for generations to come.

  22. 8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

    Just because we don’t get our way doesn’t mean we can act out in spite. Essau knew his father Isaac told Jacob to find a wife from Rebekah’s brother Laban. Ever since Essau married a daughter from Ishmael (also a first born son, but of Abraham). Birds of a feather of infirmity with bitterness will flock together. Their nation did prosper and grow because they were of the seed of Abraham but they will continue to be a rival of the chosen people throughout history.

  23. vss.8-9 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;
    Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the
    wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

    By Esau marrying women that did not please his father ( disobedience showed his attitude that only exalted SELF. Which then destorys unity and brings about irresponsibly.
    Looking at this spiritually as the CHURCH our focus should be on the cause of JESUS CHRIST rather than our own interests, maintaining close fellowship with the LORD to keep our flesh under subjection.

  24. 15 And look, I am with you, carefully guarding you in every way, wherever you go, and I will bring you back into this land, because I shall ⌊surely not⌋j leave you behind until I have done all things, as many as I told you

    Rick Brannan et al., eds., The Lexham English Septuagint (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012), Ge 28:15.

    I wonder if this was in Jacob’s mind when they moved to Goshen.

  25. 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

    21 So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:

    22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

    Our houses should be built on the rock that is Jesus Christ, for he is our foundation and he is why we live and breath, and he is who provides for us in our lives.

  26. 16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.

    17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

    This just proves that God is omnipresent and no matter how a place might look or how bad a person might seem, it is an opportunity for it to be the house of God we just need to open our spiritual eyes and ears.

  27. 22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

    The importance of being your tithes.

    Jacob did the series of things in obedience to his mother’s commands. When the Lord revealed himself to him, he understood for sure that God was with him. He understood the importance of what he had to do, and he swore before God to pay a 10% of all that he made.

    Give Caesar what is Caesar’s and God’s what is God’s.
