Genesis 32

1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

8 And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

  1. In the middle of verses 9-12 MSG Jacob prayed “Save me”, this reminded me of how we begin our blog every day “JESUS today YOU will SAVE me”. We (POFW) like Jacob must always call upon the only name that can save us…..JESUS!

  2. 24. And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

    25. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

    26. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

I wonder how many more blessings we could receive if we didn’t give up on them so easily and assume they’re not coming, but show God that we won’t give up until we get them.

    Luke 18:5-8 KJV
    5. Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

    6. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.

    7. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

    8. I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

  3. Gen. 32:24, 27-28
    24) And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

    27) And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
    28) And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

At night his name was Jacob, but when the breaking of the day (the light began to shine), his name was changed to Israel. He got a new identity.

When we come into the light of Christ, we too take on a new identity. We are no longer sinners, but saints. We are no longer enemies of God, but friends of God. We are no longer orphans, but the sons and daughters of God. We are no longer rejected, but are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an Holy nation, a peculiar people.

Thank You JESUS that You have called us out of darkness and into your marvellous Light! Thank You JESUS that we are new creatures in You. You have given us a new identity.

  4. “During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two servant wives, and his eleven sons and crossed the Jabbok River with them. After taking them to the other side, he sent over all his possessions. This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break. When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭32:22-25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Being alone with God will always impact  our lives. There’s nothing like being face to face with God.

  5. The name Jacob won means the struggles with God. The word we take as struggle is found in Hosea 12. 4-5. Some think it may imply persevere . Jacob has learned not to resist God but to struggle with him. How important not only to be on God’s side but to persevere in his commitment.

  6. Worry

I have heard it said that 85% of the things we worry about never happen. That is a lot of wasted energy and resources. Jacob worried his brother was still upset with him. What do you worry about; money, health, governments, economy? Five hundred years ago, Michel de Montaigne said: My life has been filled with terrible misfortune; most of which never happened.

If we could get a handle on the worry and stress that habitually, incessantly, and often unconsciously seizes hold of our mind, we would greatly increase the quality of living a longer, happier, healthier, and more successful life. Anxiety, worry and tension occur when we face a situation and choose to rely upon our own strength rather than upon God and His Word. Maybe we have forgotten that God can handle any problem. Or perhaps we let our carnal nature persuade us that we can do a better job handling the situation ourselves.

    Consider these verses:
Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Hebrews 3:19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  7. 13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

Somewhere between 550 and 600 head of cattle sent to a brother… Talk about bringing gifts for the house host.

Just a side note, Jacob sent 12 groups to meet his brother before he met with him. The messengers, half his men and cattle, the 9 droves of cattle, his wives and children. Wonder if there is any significance to that???

  8. iLove to eat More Word

12But you promised me, ‘I will surely treat you kindly, and I will multiply your descendants until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore—too many to count.’”

Jacob reminded the Lord His promise to him. He stood on the promises of God and did all he could do in the natural dimension before God stepped on the scene in the supernatural. We should always stand on the Word of God and remind Him his Word, we should always have a plan (like Jacob did), we should always have a gift, we should always be humble, and we should determine in our hearts to never give up.

  9. 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

    A name change!

  10. 9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my grandfather Abraham, and God of my father, Isaac—O Lord, you told me, ‘Return to your own land and to your relatives.’ And you promised me, ‘I will treat you kindly.’
10 I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps!
11 O Lord, please rescue me from the hand of my brother, Esau. I am afraid that he is coming to attack me, along with my wives and children.
12 But you promised me, ‘I will surely treat you kindly, and I will multiply your descendants until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore—too many to count.’” (NLT)

Although Jacob trusted God, He also knew the circumstances and the possible ways his brother may react, so he prayed. He reminded God of the promises, he reminded God the very words he was promised, and he stood by them trusting the Lord would see him through.

  11. MORE DETERMINED

24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

Jacob found himself at reckoning day. Jacob was pressed into dealing with himself and his nature. Notice some identifiable factors in Jacobs encounter that will motivate us to be MORE DETERMINED to overcome our past.

    1. He was left ALONE – very few people thrive in this condition. In our society to be alone suggests failure or rejection. However to GOD it is DELIVERANCE, POWER, SALVATION.

    2. He WRESTLED – MORE CONSCIENCE of the WAR WITHIN his own life, we witness a valid account of man vs GOD, dark vs LIGHT, flesh vs SPIRIT.

    3. He ENDURED – Until the breaking of day. Understand this phrase suggests that he wrestled until the sun came up; however, the breaking of day could have been days, until Jacob saw the light of revelation for his own soul. In other words ENDURE until VICTORY.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  12. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

Jacob had been the deceiver, the one who stole the birthright from Esau and the one who tricked his father Isaac into blessing him instead of the eldest, Esau. Now years later, after he has matured, we find him humbling himself. Address Esau as lord and addressing himself as a “servant.”

It is best when we find ourselves in situation where someone feels we have wronged them, whether we have or not, that we humble ourselves and take the low road of humility. We should always be servants to others, especially those of us in ministry. We are here to serve people, not the other way around.

  13. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

Do you know…Do you know…. Do you know the man?!
Wow to have a physical altercation with God. Wow!!!!
Do you know who he is? He is the God almighty.

  14. Genesis 32:25
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

We must be broken in order to be bless!
Jacob was broken by God, he allowed God to break him and change him.

  15. vss. 7-8 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the fkocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

Jacob Jacob is like so many of us …trouble comes and we fret ,worry and struggle trying to take matters into our own hands .
We must remember to go to GOD FIRST and believe and trust HIM .
Our security ,and our confidence is not in us or others but in JESUS CHRIST

MORE FAITH IN GOD believe and obey HIS VOICE !!!

  16. The blessing constituted the changing of his name from Jacob,”Heel Catcher,” “Supplanter,” or “Deceiver,” to Israel

  17. Genesis 32:22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of Jabbok. After he had sent them across the steam he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, Let me go for it is daybreak. But Jacob replied, I will not let you go unless you bless me.

  18. 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

when we give ourselves to God he charges us completely!!! We might still have the same name physically but Jesus turned or life upside down!!! He washed away our sins and transforms us!!!! Thank you Jesus for dying at the cross for my sins!!! Your blood washed me white as snow HALLELLUJAH

  19. Lesson learned

    Genesis 32:10 (KJV Strong’s)

10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

All of Jacob’s life he held to the attitude of “it should have been me.” It should have been him with the birthright and not Esau. It should have been him with the blessing and not Esau it should have been him with Rachel. It should have been him with the best cattle. Now Jacob faced with his past he comes to grips with his future.

His response to his brother’s attack, and the possibility of losing family? Humility

He tells God that he isn’t worthy of the mercies God gives him. He finally gets it after all this time. Everything he has is only because of God and his plan and really not about him. Jacob is just someone that God chose to use.

So what is God’s response to Jacob’s humility?

    Genesis 32:28 (KJV Strong’s)

28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

The only way we prevail with God is not in achievement, ability, or strength but in our willingness to die out to our flesh so his will and plan can live and be accomplished.

  20. Sometimes God will send us an angel to test us and to see if we are willing to follow him and be righteous in his word. We may not recognize it at first because of our struggles that we come out victorious in the name of Jesus Christ. Sometimes we are face to face with God just like Jacob wrestled an angel and took a blow to his hip and made him limp for the rest of his life. Jacob had knew what had happened when he realized that he saw God face to face and yet Jacobs life was spared !!! I declare it in Jesus Name!!!

  21. “And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.””(Genesis‬ ‭32:28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

  22. 32:32 That is why to this day the Israelites do not eat the sinew which is attached to the socket of the hip, because he struck the socket of Jacob’s hip near the attached sinew.

The man who would run from problems and lie and cheat is now unable to do these things. From this moment forward, Jacob would rely on God to solve his problems rather than himself.

  23. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

Fear caused division and stress. When Jacob heard that his brother was coming he focused on the physical. Had he put his trust in God first he wouldn’t have had to worry. He did what he thought was logical and split his family into two groups. One mans fear then became a families fear. Fear can be contagious and is not of God.

  24. “The man said, “But no longer. Your name is no longer Jacob. From now on it’s Israel (God-Wrestler); you’ve wrestled with God and you’ve come through.””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭32:28‬ ‭MSG‬‬

When you have an encounter with God you can no longer be perceived as the same person. You walk differently, talk differently, and are called by a different name.

  25. “Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.” The word of God (Jesus) states why they do not and also states that they still even today, do not. One that is wise will inquire as too the reason why something is done or is not done, before nonchalantly discounting it; one that is unwise will not. Dear God, help me first seek you, as too why; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

    • Jacob was wise to make peace by an offering to his brother.

      Matthew 5:9
Blessed [are] the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

There is nothing like making peace out of a chaotic situation. This passage gives us example of how to win the battle. The PUSH! Pray Until Something Happens. Jacob didn’t let up until things changed. I think this is a call for MORE Prayer. Let us PUSH our inviroent to yield its goods as Jacib did. We may just find ourselves conquering our fears and graduating to a new anointing. Let’s Pray!

  26. Wow…what wrestling match and he wouldn’t let go until he was blessed. Only if our prayer life was the same as his was. What blessing we could have, but we would have pray to be healed next after that fight. But he got a new name and was blessed. You know being born again we have a new name too. But, Jesus did the fighting for us and all we have to do is to believe “GOD”.

    “Hallelujah”………………….

  27. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me

It might take a wrestling fight but dont give up and do not let go of the blessings of God.

  28. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

God sent Jacob away from Laban, even spoke to Laban not to mess with Jacob for leaving him. Then Jacob saw angels of the Lord saying “this is the camp of God” in vs1 but somehow he is afraid of his brother Essau. In his fear he divided up his family in a effort to protect them if Essau didn’t accept him kindly. The level God protects and leads us doesn’t change, just our reactions to control the situations we should be leaving in God’s hands.

  29. Mending Relationships

This chapter shows evidence of Jacob having turned his heart towards God. Not only is there an increase in the number of divine encounters he experiences but his heart is clear in his prayer that he has humbled himself and is seeking God. As he seeks God, we see a turn likewise in his relationships towards others. He shows greater compassion towards his family and great generosity towards Esau in an attempt to make amends. When our hearts are after God, it automatically influences our other relationships; the love of God is released in us to flow more freely towards others along with the favor and blessings of God touching areas of need in our relationships.

  30. Bless me 24. And God came to La’-ban the Syr’-I-an in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Ja’-cob either good or bad. 25. Then La’-ban overtook Ja’-cob. Now Ja’-cob had pitched his tent in the mount; and La’-ban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gil’-e-ad. 26. And La’-ban said to Ja’-cob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword? 1 Sam. 30 : 2 Thank you Jesus that you Bless me !!!!

  31. Bless me 24. And Ja’-cob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. Hos. 12 : 3 25. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Ja’-cob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. Matt. 26 : 41 26. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let me go, except thou bless me. Thank you for Blessings LORD !!!!

  32. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

Do not give up on your blessing! You may waiting for your blessing to happen in your life but just know that God still has it for you, he just may not have sent it yet. But when you don’t give up on it, God will bless your efforts.
