Genesis 39

1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.

2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

6 And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.

7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.

16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.

17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:

18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.

19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

20 And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

  1. Bless when you go in and blessed when you come out

2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

Once you are blessed by God and you stay in His will no matter what comes your way or where you end up at, God will keep blessing you. When I see someone successful not living right but being blessed don’t think that bad guys get blessed look around him and you will find someone that follows God and is being treated fairly and with respect. For God NEVER leaves His children unattended for He cares for us. Thank you Jesus for your many blessing everyday!!!!!! Amen

  2. In reading this chapter, we see how even though Joseph was trying to mind his own business and do nothing but his very best for his master; he was met with lies against him, and day to day problems. The enemy is going to try his very best to try and see if you will cave into pressures of this life; but, hold on as Joseph did and always give God your very best no matter the situation you are in and He will be with you as He brings you through as He did with Joseph in the end of this chapter “…because God was with him; whatever he did God made sure it worked out for the best”.

  3. 2. And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

    3. And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

Can those around us tell that the Lord is with us, or do we hide it with our actions and attitudes, or perhaps don’t let it show out of intimidation?

  4. In Egypt Joseph becomes in charge of his masters estate. But when *Joseph resist of the Masters wife to seduce him she falsely accused him and he is thrown in prison. God is with him soon he is running the prison for the Warden.

  5. iLove to eat More Word
Genesis 39:2-3 NLT The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. (3) Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.

If God be for us, who can be against us. No matter what situation we might find ourselves in, the truth of the matter is that God wants to bless his people so that He might be glorified. The number one thing that seems to come our way once we start getting blessed is lust. The bible instructs us to flee fornication…good job Joseph!

  6. “From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished. So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man,

The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭39:5-6, 23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Lord,  I pray that every disciple from the Pentecostals of Fort Worth would become like Joseph. That we would have your favor and be prosperous and everything we do.

  7. Throughout his ordeal Joseph never complained but just followed where God was leading him next. How do we react when we are put into an unlikely situation? We should trust God as Joseph did as know that He has greater in store for us.

  8. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

    GOD WAS WITH HIM!

  9. THE KEY TO FAVOR

22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

We witness a unique trend in this chapter. Joseph is sold as a slave and imprisoned like a criminal, however on both occasions, Joseph is BLESSED and has the FAVOR of the LORD on him.

    What is the key?

2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

The LORD was with Joseph because Joseph was with the LORD. Favor and success are simple, not easy, but simple. Serve the LORD with gladness, regardless of our situation.

Slave or prisoner, the LORD was with Joseph and BLESSED him.

  10. Godly Favor in Worldly Positions

3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

If we maintain our Christian values in our daily lives people will notice. We, as children of God should be different in everything we do. We should not be late to work. We should not initiate or partake in office gossip and/or politics. That does not limit us to the door mat for everyone to wipe their feet on either. However, our work ethic should be an example for other to not only notice but follow. We should provide an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. Today, however, a popular motto is get all one can and give as little as possible.

These attitudes are noticed; and in some cases followed. Many times though a Godly work ethic is the source of contention in the work place. Just because everyone takes 20-25 minutes during a 15 minute break does not make it right. I have been on a job where according to other employees “I work to fast”.
Be the light. Be the example to follow. Allow God to shine in all that we do; not just in the sanctuary.

  11. From the mountain top experience to the valley.
“For the God on the mountain is still God in the valley.”

    Gen. 39:2,4 & 20-21
    2) And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
    4) And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

    20) And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the kings’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
    21) But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

Joseph started out as the loved son of his father. ( mountain top experience)
Then he was sold into slavery by his brothers. ( valley experience)
Then he becomes an overseer in Potiphar’s house. ( mountain top experience)
Last, he is thrown into prison. ( valley experience)
    BUT, GOD Was With Joseph!

In Illinois, our Bishop’s wife used to sing a song called, God on the Mountain.”
    The chorus says …
For the God on the mountain
Is still God in the valley
    When things go wrong
    He’ll make them right
And the God of the good times
Is still God in the bad times
    The God of the day
Is still God in the night

So no matter if you’re having a ” mountain top experience” or a ” valley experience,” right now, GOD Is With You! You Are Never Alone!

  12. Joseph’s attitude of submission and obedience allowed him to find favor with those that God placed in his path.

Our attitude and actions will cause us to either find favor or find troubles and trials. It’s totally up to us which path we take. Submission isn’t always fun but it leads to the path of favor and blessings from the Lord.

If we find ourselves always in a mess, always struggling, always going through trials and test of life, it would be wise to search our hearts and find out if we really are submitted or just going through the motions.

  13. 11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body, but he that commiteth fornication sinneth against his own body.

19 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy ghost which is in you, which ye have of God and ye are not your own?

  14. 3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

I wouldn’t consider being a slave or a prisioner a prosperous position. It’s about the power of the position Joseph was in but because the Lord was with him. Meaning he was continually with them Lord himself. In the middle of it all he walked with God and he prospered more and more. Each position was a challenge and he came out with flying colors when he rejected the adulterous call of Potiphars wife and waited for the cup-bearer to remember to ask for his release from prison. He served with gladness no matter his position.

  15. 4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

Finding grace in your trial. Just remember it could be your trail will help save your nation.

  16. 19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

The hand of God was with Joseph at all times. It was very interesting to note that not only did God put him as the head and not the tail where ever he went but that God was in control of his life and protected him in times of trouble. It says that the Egyptian ruler’s wrath was kindled against Joseph but he just put him in prison with the kings prusoners. He could have beaten him to death. When a man is in wrath because something of his was been taken or hurt a man will so do as much as kill, especially being a man of the world. However God was with him and had a plan for his life. Several of God’s promises fulfilled so far in Joseph’s life. So shall we know that if we are with God and obey his commandments, even though we may be going through a valley of shadow of death we shall feas no evil…for the Lord shall be with us…even to the end of the world.

  17. Genesis 39:23 (KJV Strong’s)

23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.

This isn’t fair. Joseph did what he was supposed to do. He never fell to temptation. He never gave in to the wishes of potiphar’s wife. Yet here he is in the prison. He was arrested, and his reputation was ruined. His character was defamed in the sight of others.

Yet this was the perfect plan and will of God. Having faith and trusting is God may sometimes lead us down paths that we do not think are the right ones. But if we are lead by his spirit it will make sense in the end.

  18. 3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

  19. “And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me”. Lies and deception have and will always be revealed, and the Judge (Jesus) shall have the final word. One need not wonder or doubt as all, shall give an account on the day appointed. Dear God, forgive us (me) of anything that is unacceptable to you, while we (I) still have breath to make it right; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

  20. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
God is with us through it all!!

  21. 2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

So amazing how the favor of the Lord is something palpable. When we walk in the Lord, is like turning on LED lights in the dark. The light pierces thru the darkness. LED lights are the Body builders of the light bulb community. That’s how I imagine Joseph was in his time. The favor of God was so intense, it was visible to the naked eye.

Let s let out light bleed through the spirit realm and be so evident it can be seen with the naked eye.

  22. Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard, purchased him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.

Interesting how the descendants of Abrahams mistake are the ones who sold their relative to slavery.

  23. “When his master heard his wife’s story, telling him, “These are the things your slave did to me,” he was furious. Joseph’s master took him and threw him into the jail where the king’s prisoners were locked up. But there in jail GOD was still with Joseph: He reached out in kindness to him; he put him on good terms with the head jailer. The head jailer put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners—he ended up managing the whole operation. The head jailer gave Joseph free rein, never even checked on him, because GOD was with him; whatever he did GOD made sure it worked out for the best.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭39:19-23‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Even in the worst of circumstances God was with Joseph. Don’t think you’re forgotten when everything seems to go wrong. God is still by your side.

  24. “But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.”‭‭(Genesis‬ ‭39:21‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

What I learned about Joseph was that he was a slave in Egypt, Even thou Joseph, although was innocent in the matter of being cast into prison. In jail, Joseph interprets the dreams of two of his fellow prisoners. Both of the interpretations prove to be true, and one of the men was released later on from jail and restored to his position as the king’s cupbearer. Two years later, the king himself had some troubling dreams, and the cupbearer remembers Joseph’s gift of interpretation. The king calls for Joseph and relates his dreams. Joseph predicts in seven years of bountiful harvests followed by the seven years of severe famine in Egypt and Joseph advises the king to begin storing grain in preparation for the coming dearth. For Joseph’s wisdom, Joseph is made a ruler in Egypt, the second only to the king!!! In Jesus Name !!!

  25. Joseph as Overseer
Gen.39:1-23 The key to Joseph’s whole life is expressed in the words the Lord was with him, and ….the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

  26. “And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand. And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭39:2-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The favor of the Lodd was with Joseph even though he was going through a tough time in his life. They key was that he didn’t focus on he negative, but he stayed focused and went to work on the things at hand.

  27. 8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

Jesus!!!! Refuse the devil. ….Nothing in this world is worth doing I’d is not your will Jesus!!!! We glorify you because no one can stand before you Jesus!!!!! Thank you for your daily bread Jesus!!!!!
