Genesis 44

1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.

2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.

7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:

8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?

9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.

10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.

26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.

27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;

31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

  1. What a God we have….he’s there when we need Him.
Sometimes I don’t want to move on.
I was in group at the clinic where I go to, and they were talking about moving on in life when you lose someone, but I told the lady I don’t want to move on. I want to be there for my sick husband. I love Him so much it hurts. I don’t ever think I will be able to move on.
But with Jesus’ help….I can grow strong and be desiplined in other places in my life. He’s the door opener, the way maker and the Great I Am. That’s enouph for me. I enjoy reading God’s word every day…thankyou Jesus.
Bless you Lord and all the saints say amen.

  2. Verse 14 CEV “When Judah and his brothers got there, Joseph was still at home. So they bowed down to Joseph, who asked them, “What have you done? Didn’t you know I could find out?” Just like Joseph’s dream had spoken of, his brothers were now bowing down to him and now pleading for their little brother. Joseph was now testing his brothers, when Judah spoke up. We cannot afford to keep quiet either, speak up and share Jesus with someone today.

  3. 33. Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

What a transformation! These same ones who once were willing to kill their own brother are now willing to be a servant in their youngest brother’s place so that he can go free.

  4. Joseph could not grasp the purpose God had in mine when the Lord permitted his captivity But the story helps us see that God sees the whole picture. The Lord weaves the history of individuals family and nations into a single tapestry. Each of us must trust God with the whole even when our part seems painful at times

  5. For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

  6. iLove to eat more Word

“Why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house? 9If you find his cup with any one of us, let that man die. And all the rest of us, my lord, will be your slaves.”

We have to be careful what we speak. He was confident that no one had stole the cup, but his words condemned them regardless because the cup was found in the stuff. Sometimes we are rightfully confident yet still wrongfully speak.

  7. Be sure your sin will find you out.

16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

Judah confessed. While the brothers were innocent of stealing the cup they were guilty of far greater sins. Are we any different? There are sins in my life I wish I never partook of. Through the grace of the Lord through His blood I am forgiven. We are all guilty of sin. We can’t hide from our sin. Time does not erase the guilt of our sin; only the blood of Jesus can heal us from ourselves.

  8. MORE INTEGRITY

The confidence of innocence in Josephs Brothers is evident by their stong speech. They begin by reminding Josephs servant that they had already returned the money they found in the first load of food. They plead their cause of why would they steal a little cup when they could have had the money.

    Overconfidence often breeds overcommitment:
    MSG
9 If that chalice is found on any of us, he’ll die; and the rest of us will be your master’s slaves.”
10 The steward said, “Very well then, but we won’t go that far. Whoever is found with the chalice will be my slave; the rest of you can go free.”

The spokesman, whichever it was of Jacobs sons was very bold in offering the death of a brother, however we see the response of the servant in verse 10 “we won’t go that far”.

The servant knew that he had planted the cup in the bag of Benjamin, he didn’t understand why or even what Joseph was up to. However he did what servants do

    O B E Y

May the LORD help us to learn our lessons in humility and not allow pride, arrogance or ignorance have rule in our lives as we FOLLOW JESUS.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray

  9. Stinking Thinking

28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

When he saw the blood dipped coat he automatically thought the worst without examining or looking for more proof than what he had. How many times in life do we just like him, think the worst of a situation or a person, without first emamining the situation? We need to get rid of that stinking thinking and get our mind on Jesus!!

  10. The testing by a Leader is not always easy. Joseph was testing his brothers in various ways to see if they had learned their lesson from selling him as a young boy.

Many times in our lives the Lord sends test our way, some of them are through those how who we are submitted to. They need to see if we have learned from our experiences that we have gone through so that we don’t repeat the same mistakes, or so that we learn what we were supposed to have learned and don’t have to repeat the test.

Although it is challenging at times, the best way to complete and pass a test from the Lord is to do it with a praise on our lips always. Romans 8:28 tells us all things work for the good of those that love the Lord, and who are called according to His purpose. It doesn’t say all things will be good. Sometimes we go through some bad things, but it is all working for our good and if we can keep that thought on the forefront of our minds, it will help us endure and pass the test.

  11. 7“What are you talking about?” the brothers responded. “We are your servants and would never do such a thing!

This is a typical response from someone has been caught doing wrong. We all have done something wrong before and we should just admit it and tell the truth. The brothers had a strong bond for each other they whole heartily trusted one another, even unto death. We too should have a strong bond with family and with God. This shows that trust and love go together!

  12. The test.

What are you willing to fight for? The brothers must have felt bad after they saw what their father went through after Joseph was gone. For they fought for their brother. Sometimes the greatest lesson when we do something wrong. Is to see how much it affects others around us. We can learn so much from the life of Joseph.

  13. 16 Judah as spokesman for the brothers said, “What can we say, master? What is there to say? How can we prove our innocence? God is behind this, exposing how bad we are. We stand guilty before you and ready to be your slaves—we’re all in this together, the rest of us as guilty as the one with the chalice.”

  14. REPENTANCE

Remorse and conviction bring us to repentance. Time went by and Judah and his brothers has seen the suffering of grief in his fathers eyes. They have watch him cry endless tears for Joseph. Judah feels the remorse of his actions. He is determined not to let it happen again. That’s true repentance NEVER TO DO IT AGAIN. Not to Benjamin, nor anyone else. Let Joseph actions serve us as an example that we must learn to trust again, we must learn true forgiveness, Joseph never forgot them although his brothers were unaware of who he really was. May we always have true repentance in our heart and may we all learn to give full forgiveness and continue to love no matter what in Jesus Name AMEN

  15. 1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations just like the brothers did. Unfortunate, discouraging situations. The brothers had done everything right and were finally getting to go back home but because God had a prophecy to fulfill things quickly changed. When circumstances and situations take an unexpected turn in our lives we have to remember that God works everything for our good.

  16. The Substitute

    Gen. 44:33
“Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondsman to my Lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.”

Judah wanted to take Benjamin’s place as a slave. He wanted to become a Substitute for him.

JESUS did take our place for our sins. He became our Substitute.
2 Cor. 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
1 Peter 2:24, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sin, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
1 Peter 3:18, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the spirit.”

Thank You JESUS that you became our Substitute!

  17. Genesis 44:30 (KJV Strong’s)

    30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;

Jacob lost his foundation. He was so focused on his children that he made them his life. We must be careful to keep Jesus number one and on the throne. As long as he is the reason for what we do then it will work out.

  18. v5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

Truth shall always prevail even though you may falsely accused.

  19. 6 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

In the midst of trouble Judah speaks up again… Let not your praise be shut because of perilous times but rather let your praise so cause the one with all power and authority to be Lord over your life and situations and allow him to work. When the going gets tough your praise get tougher.

  20. Just because you may have been setup, doesn’t mean that you are down for the count. God has great things in store for his people. Don’t allow situation to pull you away from the promise God has placed on your life.

  21. 15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

  22. 28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

We must understand that as we walk in the, spirit something that we use to feel or the ways God use to use us may seem dead yet in reality God is in the process of perfecting it for greatness .

  23. “And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?” Many in power have used such tactics, to obtain what they want, gain more power, or as we further read too test; “Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.” One should be prayerful, first about one’s own actions, and then that one be not deceived by another. Dear God, change us (me) and direct our (my) ways that we (I) may be right in your eyes; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In GOD we trust”. “One Nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty GOD we serve! Thank GOD for his word. GOD bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in JESUS name, Amen!

  24. ““So let me stay here as your slave, not this boy. Let the boy go back with his brothers. How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? Oh, don’t make me go back and watch my father die in grief!””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭44:33-34‬ ‭MSG‬‬

If we could all have this same mentality to stand in the gap/in the place of one of our brothers or sisters. It takes a great deal of sacrifice to become committed to such a claim as this. Have you done anything close to this kind of dedication?

  25. 27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
I can only imagine how Jacob’s favoritism effected his other sons. No doubt they had jealously towards the favorite yet we see later in the passage that they make every effort to appease their father. The jealously they had when they were younger with Joseph did not overcome them when they were dealing with Benjamin. They learned from their lesson!!

  26. What a difference Joseph’s brother is showing they are so willing to be a servant in their brothers place. I believe they didn’t want to put their dad thru that again. In times pass they threw Joseph into a dark pit and lied to their father, about it but he eventually found out. Truth always prevails!!!

  27. “Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭44:18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

From verse 18 to verse 34 we see Judah pleading for the life of his brother. He sees that his brother is in trouble and he wants him to be restored to their father, but there is a situation that has to be worked through. We need to be like Judah when it comes to our brothers and sisters in Christ. We should go to God, the only one with authority and patition for the welfare of our brothers and sisters.

Stand up in prayer. Go to war for their soles. Fight hell for them the way you want them to fight hell for you.

  28. 9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen

This is a great time to know them that labor among you. He couldn’t have made such a bold statement if he didn’t know his brothers well. It is crucial in the work of God to trust your brothers. It is even more crucial to trust your Pastor. I like the way I heard it from one preacher, ” team work makes the dream work”

  29. On this second visit, the brothers spent the night at Joseph’s house, and early in the morning they were sent on their way home with their sacks full of grain. The money was put back in their sacks as before, and in Benjamin’s sack Joseph’s silver cup. It was a cup to drink from, and also the Egyptians and others in old times read signs in such a cup, in the play of light in the water or wine.

  30. 32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

I gave my word to my father. I pledged to lay down my life for my brother if anything were to happen. Please do not take the boy. Let me fulfill my pledge so no more evil may befall my house.
