Exodus 17

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?

3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

5 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?

8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

16 For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

  1. Verses 6-7 MSG “Moses did what he said, with the elders of Israel right there watching. He named the place Massah (Testing-Place) and Meribah (Quarreling) because of the quarreling of the Israelites and because of their testing of God when they said, “Is God here with us, or not?” It is easy to say “Oh, we would never question God like that”; but, in reality we do every time we complain about what we think we should have, or the way things should go, etc. Lord help us to trust in You and to wait upon Your direction in ALL things.

The end of the chapter talks about how Aaron and Hur held up the arms of Moses to win the battle against Amalek and his army. We too need to lift up the hands of our man of God that the Lord has blessed POFW with. Thank you Jesus for my Pastors.

  2. 4. Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What will I do with this people?-a little more and they will stone me!”

    6. I will be standing before you there on the rock in Horeb, and you will strike the rock, and water will come out of it so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in plain view of the elders of Israel. NET

Whatever you’re going through, even if it seems that your own people have turned against you, just remember that God was standing there before you and He has a plan of deliverance.

  3. 14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
16 For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

If we wrote down in a book of remembrance how many times the Lord gave us victory, how large would that book be? I think it would be a great idea to never forget that we are more than conquerors in Christ. Because we go into battle everyday, to build an alter to Jehovah Nissi to give thanks and praise everyday to the God of Israel that goes before us as our banner in battle, as our protector.

  4. 2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?

8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim

There nasty attitude gave the enemy an open door to come fight with them. I believe we make bad situations worse with our attitudes. If we could have the joy of The Lord in all of our situations I believe they would be a lot easier and shorter lived. Let us go in joy today and gird our hearts with His joy!

  5. 2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?

GOD has blessed this Nation so much that it has began to think that they are deserving of such blessings and just out right expect to be blessed, without recognizing WHO HAS BLESSED US!!!
In this verse HIS own were workout water after traveling on foot mind you. And we want everything just handed over to us (almost hand fed). Well no wonder other countries are envious of how blessed we are. We need to humble ourselves before our GOD and repent everyday, for HE IS GOOD TO US. THANK YOU JESUS. I LOVE YOU DADDY

  6. The place was named for the complaining of he people. It wasn’t named for the miracle the Lord caused. They started questioning the miracle of leaving Egypt. It was a quick forgetting of the power of God because they wanted water. We must be careful that we focus on the goodness of God even through trial so that God can continue to work through us and bless us. We don’t always understand his ways. Yes the need for water was there, but they just saw the plagues, the parting of he Red Sea, and the healing of the bitter waters. Hey should have had the faith enough to say that if God did it before he could do it again. The reason thy didn’t have hat fair was their attention as turned to negative honking instead of positive thinking.

    THINK POSITIVELY!

    • **They should have had the faith enough to say that if God did it before he could do it again. The reason they didn’t have their faith was their attention as turned to negative thinking instead of positive thinking.

  7. Jehovahnissi

This Victory was not just because Moses hands where lifted. The underlying story to be told is of endurance, loyalty, faithfulness, and unity.

Moses had to endure the people’s murmuring and complaining because if a natural hunger; now he would have to endure in the spirit.

Aaron and Hur were loyal men. The only way they would have know that when Moses hands were not lifted they would not win, is if they previously tried it. Yet, once their understanding was open to the situation they stood firm and saw it out to the end. In there faithfulness to one simple task they were able to be involved in a miracle.

Faithfulness comes from all of them. If any of them Joshua and his men, Moses, Aaron, Hur, and even God would have given up the outcome may have been a lot different. This is also where unity comes into play. It took them all willing to be faithful to their task and not take over others tasks.

4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

Moses, This man of God constantly finds himself in these types of situations each and every day. It was Moses’ conversation and prayer life that continued to deliver him from the complaining of the people. We too must have prayer lives if we are to be victorious in this world we live in today.

  9. 7 Moses named the place Massah (which means “test”) and Meribah (which means “arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord here with us or not?” (NLT)

It’s troubling to think after all that God has done, the people of Isreal still are complaining and testing God. At the same time though, it’s not a bad representation of our world today. We live in a greedy world; if we don’t have what we want, when we want it, complaints start rolling off the tongue. In times of trial, we must remember who our God is – He is creator, master, savior, redeemer, King of kings and Lord of lords! It’s like Pastor taught last night, we should have joy simply because of who God is! Beyond that though, we have to trust God and know that He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider, and He will always see us through.

  10. 6-7 Moses did what he said, with the elders of Israel right there watching. He named the place Massah (Testing-Place) and Meribah (Quarreling) because of the quarreling of the Israelites and because of their testing of God when they said, “Is God here with us, or not?” (MSG)

As a generation that lives in a “RIGHT NOW” mentality, I see how the Israelite’s are frustrated.

They were slaved, rescued, and now wondering in the wilderness.

Living in a “RIGHT NOW” mentality we would expect the blessing immediately. Yet, we have be patient and allow God to work on His timing. When we are focused on the current circumstance, we are missing the bigger picture. The Israelite’s couldn’t see the Masters plan, they only saw the current circumstances.

If you feel you’re wondering in the wilderness, allow God to mold you. Allow God to work in His time frame, and try to see the bigger picture.

  11. God Is My Banner

15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
16 For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

In the Military the Banner is very important for we are taught that the last thing to fall is the banner. When in battle there are positions of the banner that will communicate the commands to the company. It is a humiliation if the enemy captures your banner. Jahovah Nissi means God is our Banner and like the song says His banner over me is love!!!! Our Pastor works hard and it hurts that people will always complain and murmur, we are to lift him and his family up in prayer. Our prayers are like the hands that keep his hand lifted high so the Warriors will wn the battle. NEVER EVER GIVE UP FOR OUR GOD IS GREAT AND MIGHTY IN BATTLE AND HIS BANNER OVER US IS LOVE. IN JESUS NAME AMEN

  12. Don’t give up

4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

As a father, there has been many times when children do not understand about life and the ebb and flow of finances. Just because a person fathers a child does not make him the master of all things. It took me years to learn to manage the money God trusted me with. I made many mistakes and had to learn many lessons. My family had to suffer through those lean times. Children do not always understand why they cannot have the latest toys or eat at restaurants more than eating at home.

Pray to the Lord. Learn from mistakes. Do not give up. The children will understand as time goes on.

  13. “Then the Lord said to Moses, “That is something to be remembered. So write it on a scroll. Make sure Joshua knows you have done it. I will completely erase the memory of the Amalekites from the earth.””
    ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭17:14‬ ‭

A great example of training the next leader. We should always be training someone else to lead and take our ministry opportunity. As we grow this will really be important.

  14. THE JOURNEY THROUGH SIN

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

As I read this verse this morning, it dawned on me that every member of the congregation has made this journey; from the wilderness of sin. The fact that sin is a wilderness and that we are on a journey reveals deeper understanding into the fact of hardships during our journey to the promise land.

We have a destination, we have a purpose, we have a LORD JESUS to command us. Lets GO!

WARNING: There may not be any water when we get there…

    Don’t complain.

    Reap MORE JOY!

  15. 7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?
Will I choose to trust God during times of trouble or complain against him?

  16. We cannot expect to be where we need to be with God as soon as we are delivered out of our sin, there will always be a journey to get where we need to be. Just because we are no longer living in darkness does not mean we won’t have test and trials along the way. But in the end when we reach our ultimate goal of spending eternity in heaven, the long journey, and all the test and trials will be so worth it!! We need to get out of the mentality of our life has to be perfect right now because we will never be happy!

  17. 12 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

It’s always best to have a couple close friends to help lift you in Prayer.

    Ecc. 4:9-12

  18. May we stand firm on Gods promises, wait patiently, and remember where our Lord Jesus has delivered each of us from that we may experience Joy even during uncertain times. M.C.

  19. Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

We were chosen to fight the good fight. Stand. Stand strong and lift up the man of Gods hands.

  20. Exodus 17:9-13
Joshua and the men he chose did the fighting against Amelek.
Moses had the rod in his hand and lifted it up.
Aaron and Hur were there for support when Mose’s hands got tired.
Because they all worked together in unity, their enemy was defeated.

Same as the body of Christ. We all have different jobs to do, but if we work together in unity, lift each other up, and support one another, we will see our enemy defeated too.

  21. 12 But Moses ‘hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
    (Exodus 17:12 KJVStrongs)

Aaron’s name means light bearer. He was the main guy in the spot light of all the people. He wore the priestly garments, and was beside Moses when they faced Pharaoh. He was the head leader, and the one God chose to meet with once a year on the day of atonement.

Hur’s name means hole. The bible doesn’t talk about him much. One of the word’s his name comes from means white. All we really know about Hur is he was the grandfather of one of the chief artificers of the temple. He did assist Moses and Aaron as well.

Aaron and Hur held up the man of God’s hands. We need both types two hold the man of God’s hands up. We need the spot light ministries. Those roles that people see, and notice.

And we need the unseen hero ministries. These are the people who work behind the scene, and never seem to get noticed.

All components must fit together for their to be victory over the enemy. All ministering is true ministry. From the highest to the smallest. We need Aaron, and we need Hur.

  22. 4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

I kind of feel bad for Moses. He did exactly what the Lord asked him to do and all the children of Israel do is complain, doubt, they are never happy. So Moses has to go to God and ask him what to do. And like the amazing father that he is he provides. He does that now, Hes always looking out for our best interest, Hes always providing and even when we complain. God is so good to us!!

  23. “And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.” The Creator (Jesus) took strong offense to those that came against the man of God (Jesus) and his (God’s) people. One would be wise to do as Joshua was instructed, which is too remember what God has done and shall again; on the day appointed (Psalm 24:8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle). Dear God, let me be ever mindful of your power; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. “One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  24. “Directed by GOD, the whole company of Israel moved on by stages from the Wilderness of Sin. They set camp at Rephidim. And there wasn’t a drop of water for the people to drink. The people took Moses to task: “Give us water to drink.” But Moses said, “Why pester me? Why are you testing GOD?””
    ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭17:1-2‬ ‭MSG‬‬
    http://bible.com/97/exo.17.1-2.msg

It seems that when people gradually remove themselves from sin they have to find at least one thing to complain about. Usually this complaining is a result of the people not understanding why they are in the state they’ve been put into. Trust In God through these moments.

  25. 9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

It really stood out to me that Moses said “the rod of God” this was a rod that Moses had for awhile but God used to show miracles to Egypt and the children of Israel. How many times do we have something in our hands that can be used for the glory of God if we just give God the reigns?

  26. 4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

Moses had a relationship with God, if he had his doubts he knew that God will provide as crazy as it seems to strike a rock and water will come out of it, moses obeyed. He truly was a willing servant of God. Moses knew within himself that it was bigger than himself , its about doing the work of the lord and GOD will being done.

  27. 11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

We must stand and support the man of God in our lives that God will grant us victory

  28. Victory

15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

In this passage, the Lord displayed His strength following Israel’s challenges towards Him. Israel brought to Moses not simply the information of needing water but came with a spirit of complaint that challenged God and tempted Him. But God was faithful to not only provide for them but then defend them against their enemies. In our humanity, we can become overly impassioned over subjects that God already has under control and take on a critical spirit. To come to God with our needs by prayer and supplication in thanksgiving is one thing, but to bring it with complaint and accusation is the sort of “evil speaking” that the 10 spies brought when they declared a negative report of the promised land contrary to Joshua and Caleb’s account. By humbly coming to God with the right attitude and posture, we welcome true victory not just in our current situation but throughout life in favor and relationship with God.

    Philippians 4:6
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

  29. 5 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

God always has provision. It may come in an usual form, or by an unusual means, but He is an on time God.

  30. 11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

This is why we need to hold up the hands of our Pastor and the people that are in spiritual authority over us. The burden is made lighter when there are other people underneath to help support you in the spiritual fight they may be waging, possibly on your behalf as well.
