Exodus 18

1 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;

2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,

3 And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:

5 And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

6 And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

7 And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

8 And Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them.

9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

12 And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father in law before God.

13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

14 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

  1. 10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
Is there anything to hard for my God can do?! Noo..my God delivered these Isrealites out if egypt he can do an mighty work in your lives or what whatever your situation might be.

  2. He delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians……….if he did it before he can do it again. From all our adversaries such as Muslims, ISIS, and many others……………………

“For our God, is greater than them all”…………………………………

  3. Verses 23-24 NLT “If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.” Moses listened to his father-in-law’s advice and followed his suggestions.” Just like Moses we too need to listen and follow when God is commanding you to do something. Some do not like to be told what to do or try to do it all because they don’t want anyone else involved in it. Taking in good counsel and wise advice from your elders is in itself wise (God places these people in your life, in your path and sometimes in your face for a reason).

  4. NOW I KNOW

11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

Jethro blessed Abraham to go to Egypt and follow the voice, call and will of GOD. Now Jethro has come to follow Moses. Following the testimony of Moses, Jethro is persuaded that that the LORD is greater than ALL gods.

I pray today that if you are not persuaded of the deity of GOD. JESUS is GOD the Father (Creator) who came to earth to offer himself a sacrifice for the sins of man. I pray today that GOD will reveal himself to us in such a supernatural way that there is no doubt in our mind or heart and we too can say.

    “NOW I KNOW”

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  5. Despite the people’s lack of faith God gives the victory in a battle with the Amalekites. Moses meets his father in law Jethro who expressed faith in God Jethro also suggested that Moses distribute the burden of judging his contentious.

  6. The voice of an elder

It’s a wise thing to have elders that can speak into your life. Making a practice of running all major decisions through the Pastor, elders or both will keep you out of a lot of unnecessary trouble.

A wise man learns from his own mistakes.
A wiser man learns from other people’s mistakes.
But the wisest man learns from other people’s successes.

    Proverbs 24:

6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors [there is] safety.

Greater perspective and position are the keys to a victory.

  7. 24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

Listening to the voice of counsel is only the first step. We have to apply the knowledge, and complete what was asked of us.

Verse 24 states Moses “listened” to the voice and did ALL that he had asked.

  8. 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

We find here the law and principles of delegation. One can accomplish some, but a team all doing the same thing, pressing towards the same goal can accomplish so much more. There is also strength in numbers.

One can put a thousand to flight, two ten thousand…..how much can we accomplish if we will empower, equip and build a team.

  9. 10 “Praise the Lord,” Jethro said, “for he has rescued you from the Egyptians and from Pharaoh. Yes, he has rescued Israel from the powerful hand of Egypt!
11 I know now that the Lord is greater than all other gods, because he rescued his people from the oppression of the proud Egyptians.” (NLT)

Jethro praised God for what He did for the people of Isreal and came to realize the awesome power of God. By sharing our testimony of how God brought us out of our Egypt, we too can help people see how great God is!

  10. The power of our testimony!

“Jethro was delighted in all the good that GOD had done for Israel in delivering them from Egyptian oppression. Jethro said, “Blessed be GOD who has delivered you from the power of Egypt and Pharaoh, who has delivered his people from the oppression of Egypt. Now I know that GOD is greater than all gods because he’s done this to all those who treated Israel arrogantly.””
    ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭18:9-11‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Have you ever missed an opportunity to share your testimony? I have and truly regret it. I pray that God does not hold me responsible for missing the chance to share what He has done foe me. I pray for another chance to share what He has done for me.

  11. 17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

Jethro knew that Moses worked hard but also saw how he could accomplish more by getting help to do the work of God. His advise to Moses was to select trust worthy people that could help him to accomplish the work of God without getting so tired and get more done. Jethro new that God had Moses back that he wasn’t alone. Moses was wise to accept the advice from his father-in-law.

I pray that the Lord will instill the wisdom, knowledge and understand that I need to do his will.

  12. 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

AMEN!!!! Jesus is greater than everything. When I was Catholic I hated church because it was so boring to me, yet I believed in all the Saints n Mary that they could help me with my problems. However Jesus is the reason for the season, In Him I believe n trust that He is able to do the impossible. Jesus is my strength, joy, refuge, just everything and I would never let anyone take this away from me.

  13. 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

Choosing a team of men that could be trusted to do the right thing (always). It is not an easy task, but he did that as well. His faith is completely different now , it has increased. Well, After everything he has been commanded to do and now even his father in law now KNOWS THE ONE TRUE GOD!!! GOD gets the GLORY!!! HALELUJAH!!!

  14. 14When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?”

Jethro recognized that Moses needed assistance and a little counseling. As an elder to Moses, he provided words of wisdom so Moses would not have all the burden of settling disputes. We all need words of wisdom every now and then. Its wise to listen to those in authority, those with experience and to your elders.

  15. 14 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

Be open to what the man of God in your life is saying! It can help you in more ways than one!

  16. 21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
Everyone in our lives serves to teach us a lesson!! Everyone serves a purpose!!

  17. 10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

Moses was trying to tell his father in law that all God has done , convincing him that lord was greater than any other . I’ll tell you right now telling your family is the hardest thing to do to convince them about Christ , yet we should keep telling then wear God is doing in are lives so we can influence them.

  18. 23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

Listen to those that have the rule over you. For they watch for your souls. Stop and listen to the godly voices in your life. Heed their words.

  19. “He chose men of ability from the whole community of Israel. He made them leaders of the people. They became officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard cases to Moses. But they decided the easy ones themselves.”
    ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭18:25-26‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

“Change is inevitable but growth is optional.”- John Maxwell

“True leadership don’t create followers … They create MORE leaders.” J Sakiya Sandifer

Moses had a great responsibility and challenge before him. He had followers but through growth he made MORE leaders.

  20. iLove to eat more word

18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

Good advise for Moses. We must learn to delegate responsibilities

  21. Exodus 18:9
“And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.”

We too need to rejoice for all the goodness which the Lord is doing in other peoples lives, whom He has delivered out of the hand of the enemy, the devil.
Repentance, Baptism in Jesus Name, and infilling of the Holy Ghost.

    Thank You Jesus!

  22. Exodus 18:25 (KJV Strong’s)

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

The bible says that one can put a thousand a two ten thousand to flight. The principle of duplication is a leadership necessity. We must not only lead but also invest in those around us teaching them to do what we do. Jethro was wise. He understood that the plan and the purpose of God was much bigger than what Moses could handle on his own.

    There is strength in numbers.

  23. 18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

Noone can do it alone, don’t try to handle a ministry, business or other ventures by yourself, get help from people you trust. And help train up people to take positions in the kingdom of God. With more hands on deck, more people can be touched and reached out to, extending the work of the ministry.

  24. 24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

27 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

The word of God (Jesus) said he listened to his father-in-Law (elder), which we then read he (his father-in-Law/elder) went his way (departed). The elderly are full of years and often times wisdom which one that is wise will honor them (show respect; open a door, carry something for them, go out of ones way for them, and Listen). Helping or… One that is wanting to help as Moses father-in-law demonstrated; will not be looking to be seen or for a position, but only to help. Dear God, let me be wise enough too hearken like Moses; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. “One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  25. 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

There are no lone rangers in the Kigdom of God. We all need eachother and the church needs a team of leadership in place to take care of things and make the kigdom of God keep going forward. It is God’s plan to work together in unity.
