Numbers 21

1 And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6 And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.

11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ijeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

12 From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.

13 From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

15 And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab.

16 And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

18 The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:

19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

20 And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.

21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king’s high way, until we be past thy borders.

23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

25 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

28 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

32 And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and og the king of bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at edrei.

34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.

  1. 34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

  2. Numbers 21:8-9
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looked upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.”

    St. John 3:14-16
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

  3. This chapter made me think of the song that we just sang a few services ago “In Jesus’ Name” as the Lord reminded Moses in verse 34 AMP “But the Lord said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have handed over him and all his people and his land to you; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”:

    God is fighting for us
    God is on our side
    He has overcome
    Yes He has overcome
    We will not be shaken
    We will not be moved
    Jesus You are here

    Carrying our burdens
    Covering our shame
    He has overcome
    Yes He has overcome
    We will not be shaken
    We will not be moved
    Jesus You are here

I will live, I will not die
    The resurrection power of Christ
Alive in me and I am free
    In Jesus’ Name
I will declare and lift You high
Christ revealed and I am healed
    In Jesus’ Name

    God is fighting for us
    Pushing back the darkness
    Lighting up the Kingdom
    That cannot be shaken
    In the Name of Jesus
    Enemy’s defeated
And we will shout it out
    Shout it out

  4. 2 Israel vowed a vow to God: “If you will give this people into our power, we’ll destroy their towns and present the ruins to you as a holy destruction.”
3 God listened to Israel’s prayer and gave them the Canaanites. They destroyed both them and their towns, a holy destruction. They named the place Hormah (Holy Destruction). MSG

2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
3 And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.KJV

Hormah in Hebrew means devoted, or devotion. Israel made a vow to God. They made a promise to God. God heard, aided them, and they fulfilled their promise. If you made a promise to God, he has heard it and will send you every provision to fulfill your promise! He gets excited, I believe, when we make promises to Him. It’s another form or level of devotion that we can give to our LORD!!!

  5. 8. And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

    9. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

    John 3:14-15 KJV
    14. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

    15. That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

  6. For their ignorance and complaining over and over again. The lord sent large snakes and had them come against them. They weren’t composing after that.

“And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.”
    ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭21:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  7. The way of captivity

Every time things get a bit difficult their favorite phrase comes out “Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?” don’t they see that God is about to give them the promise land rich in milk and honey?? This mentality reminds me of some people that have been in warefare for way too long. Warefare was established to be a temporary help for those in need until the jobs availability will increase. Roosevelt put it in action believing that once the head of the home found a job they will stop using it and that fund will be restored for someone else in need. In the seventies, people felt entitled to such benefits and the miss use began. Roosevelt just like God had plans for them to better themselves and get the promise land or the American Dream. The problem is that again they think back to the slavery times and yes it was difficult but they had a roof over their heads and their 3 meals daily. The same is our mentality, yes, we can go to college, get a better job, and get of warefare but that implicates that we MUST get of our comfort zone and sacrifice somethings to accomplish the goal and insecurity, fears, or just the fact that we have grown accustomed to our slavery ways. It is time to get of our behinds and be all that our God has planned for us to be. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.!!!!!!! Yes! Stand and go get your expected end!!! GET OUT OF SLAVERY!!! In Jesus Name Amen

  8. REGRETFUL COMPLAINT

The people of GOD seem to struggle with our tongue. Having already witness the judgment of GOD on the complaints of those delivered. The children of Israel yet again reveal their selfish, carnal mindset.

We also struggle with this temptation, by complaining about life in the church or the expectations and commitments that are presented for victorius spiritual living.

Consider the present day disappointments to our savior. We do not have a wilderness to wonder in, we are BLESSED with houses of WORSHIP, houses to live in and an endless choice of food and water. Yet we hear continual complaints about life and living conditions.

Secondly, the selfish carnal mindset was dealt an antidote when we received the Holy Ghost. The spirit of thanksgiving should have replaced all complaints. The attitude of gratitude should have replaced all fleshly regrets. We are simply challenged to “walk in the SPIRIT and not fulfill the lust of the flesh”.

Galatians 5:15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Lets walk in the SPIRIT and not complain. Keeping the judgements of GOD reserved for the devil and his followers, not on the complaints of those that are BLOOD bought, HOLY GHOST filled, GRACIOUSLY saved children of GOD.

  9. 17 Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

SPRING UP, O WELL SPRING UP!!!
SPRING UP, O WELL SPRING UP!!!
    YES!!! SPRING UP, O WELL!!!
    HALELUJAH!!! YOU LORD ARE FAITHFUL!!!

  10. Numbers 21:8

8 Then the Lord told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!”

The Lord just gave them victory over King Arad. The prisoners were returned and God’s glory spread. Just a few verse later and the people complained so much that venomous snakes were loosed on the people.

God commanded Moses to make a bronze snake and only those who looked upon it were healed.

But how long did it take to make and cast a bronze snake.
The mold had to be made. The material had to be gathered. The fire was kindled to the proper temperature. Then once it was liquid it was poured into the mold. The bronze then had to cool down so it could be touched. Then it was wrapped and placed on a pole that was lifted up.

This was no quick process, but it had to be followed correctly if salvation were going to come.

We must follow God’s process God’s way. Salvation can only come when we are born again and live a life separated from the world, separated into God, obedient to his word.

  11. 8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

God provides salvation if we looked to him and his Word and obey.

  12. iLove to Grow in the Word

The modern day medical field still uses the symbol that God instructed Moses to set before the Children of Israel. The problem is, in Israel the symbol eventually became idolatry just as it remains the same today.

  13. 1 And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.
2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

Now it seems that Israel has been forced into fighting and once they do, they discover what God wanted to do all along…go before them and give them city and town where they could dwell. However, they are not in the promised land as yet, they are still in school- the school of hard knocks while they learn to trust in God to provide, protect and deliver.

  14. Spring up oh well. Spring up!

17 Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

I remember this message from our Pastor. Spring up Oh Well!!! Most of the time you have to work for your blessing.

  15. “Then Israel made a promise to the Lord. They said, “Hand these people over to us. If you do, we will set their cities apart to you in a special way to be destroyed.” The Lord gave Israel what they asked for. He handed the Canaanites over to them. Israel completely destroyed them. They also destroyed their towns. So that place was named Hormah.”
    ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭21:2-3‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

    Great is thy faithfulness!

“But here is something else I remember. And it gives me hope. The Lord loves us very much. So we haven’t been completely destroyed. His loving concern never fails. His great love is new every morning. Lord, how faithful you are! I say to myself, “The Lord is everything I will ever need. So I will put my hope in him.””
    ‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:21-24‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

  16. 34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon
it’s amazing to me how over and over in the Word of God the Lord told his people to fear not and to trust in him. And every time that God says that he brings a mighty deliverance. we should want to do as the book of Proverbs says trust in the Lord with all of our heart and lean not to your own understanding in all of our ways acknowledge Him and he will direct our paths.

  17. 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Num 21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived. ASV

My question is was it just for that moment or was it for, for now on? I understand that it is not mentioned in the bible again but the way that it was worded makes me question.

  18. 4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

Here the Israelite’s continue to complain no matter the situation. They haven’t learned to have faith and trust in God. The consequences of the complaints will not stop until they submit and have faith in God. The Israelite’s know God is powerful and an able God that’s why they asked God to give them the Canaanites because they knew God was for them but when they saw that it was going to take them some work they gave in and complained.

God gives us opportunities to follow him and seek righteousness it’s up to us to submit and let God be in control.

  19. The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the Israelites were approaching on the road through Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites and took some of them as prisoners. Then the people of Israel made this vow to the Lord : “If you will hand these people over to us, we will completely destroy all their towns.” The Lord heard the Israelites’ request and gave them victory over the Canaanites. The Israelites completely destroyed them and their towns, and the place has been called Hormah ever since.
    Numbers 21:1-3 NLT

The victory comes from thw Lord… This gave me the thought that if you really want victory over any struggle or enemy of your life, if you are made up in your mind that you are done with it and commit your life to God, make a vow to Him, then he will give you the victory. The Lord Jesus will deliver you. You dont have to struggle with a sin in your life. The question the becomes are you truely done with it? Are you going to kill it all? Or leave some here and there like king Saul did? Kill it all and be free and get voctory.

  20. Look upon the serpent on the pole……

    John 3:14

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

“Be cleansed, be forgiven, be changed”……..

  21. 34 The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, along with all his people and his land. Do the same to him as you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.” (NLT)

There is nothing to fear with the Lord on our side!

  22. And Moses the lord said unto Moses fear him not for i have delivered him into thy hand and all his people and his land and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the amorites which dwelt at heshbon

  23. 2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

God will never fail to keep his promises to his people, if God says he will do it, then he will do it.

  24. 8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

OBIDIENCE!!! Ive learned that it doesn’t matter if you agree or not…OBIDIENCE is what God is looking for in all of us. He wants us to completely trust Him and the Man of God that He has placed upon us. The world may show us other wise such as we need to stand up for ourselves and not let anybody tell us anything. Yet, if the Man of God tells you to do or not to do something. You better obey Him!!! Jesus is faithful and He wants us to just obey and trust in Him. I know at times I just want to do what I want but that’s really dangerous. Don’t play with fire because you’ll end up in the lake of fire!!! Heaven and hell is no joke!!! Take the things of God seriously!!!

  26. 5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

I feel like… If we still have a problem with complaining and murmuring then just reading the scripture would help us understand exactly how God feels about complaining. I pray that all things we do would be done as unto the Lord

  27. 4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
No matter what the weapon is I want you too know that I Win!!
You may feel defeated, but always remember that God is fighting for us and he is our side!! The devil is under our feet and we are overcomers!!!

  28. #Aggravated

5-6 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

I wish I had some fiery serpents to turn loose over the years. As a husband, father, employee, citizen of the USA and general human on the Earth; we all have the opportunity to judge; opportunity is not enough, as we are not the judge. At times I have thought about what I could/would/should do to people who continue to gripe and complain about being alive. These people are the same people who cannot see the forest for the all the trees. Ugh!

  29. 34 The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you, along with all his people and his land. Do the same to him as you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.”

Who shall we fear when God is on our side?! That’s no one because he already won the victory! What a great God we serve!

  30. Teach me about faith!

As a judgement for the murmuring against God and His servant, God sent serpents into the Israelites camp and the people began to die. This showed the people that they were the ones in sin and they came to Moses and confessed there sin and plead for Gods mercy.

When Moses prayed for the people, God instructed him to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole so the people could be healed (Numbers 21:5-7). God was teaching the people something about faith. It is totally illogical to think that looking at a bronze image could heal anyone from snakebite, but that is exactly what God told them to do. It took an act of faith in God’s plan for anyone to be healed, and the serpent on the stick was a reminder of their sin which brought about their suffering. This serpent was symbolic of the serpents God used to chastise the people for their unbelief.
    Murmurs have it rough!

  31. 34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

  32. “And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.” The word of God (Creator) stated that Moses was told not to fear. One should have no fear if God (Jesus) said it, however one should consider the cost of doubting the Lord (Judge). Dear God, help us learn to trust and stand firm on your word. May God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  33. “Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.” The Lord had heard enough, therefore he sent the serpents. The question should be what could have happened if they had not humbled themselves, and asked for forgiveness. God help us to comprehend the true value of humility, in Jesus name.

  34. 14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

This is a new book, the book of the wars of the Lord… Very interesting…

  35. The serpent staff that Moses made is very similar to the rod of Hermes. Today, we see the medical symbol that resembles it too. It depicts angles wings carrying the rod from two snakes. We can be that to other people. We can carry them out of two snakes, the enemy and the world.
