Joshua 3

1 And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.

2 And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;

3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.

5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

6 And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.

7 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

8 And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.

9 And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the Lord your God.

10 And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into Jordan.

12 Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.

13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.

14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;

15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)

16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

  1. 3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

It wasn’t until their feet were in the water that they got their miracle. God wants to see that we are obedient and willing to step into the waters and get our feet wet before He steps into our situation and does the miraculous.

  3. My God is so awesome. Once again the Israelites walked over on dry ground….not one foot wet! I can only imagine the sight and the awe of it all. Obedience can and will bring forth miracle-wonders as it says in verse 5 of the MSG version. All I can think about is what Pastor has been iterating to us about 100% participation and what God said he would do.

  4. MY GOD NEVER CHANGES!!!!!

I love the way God show over and over again that He will never change. He will never leave you nor forsakes you. IF HE DID IT FOR MOSES, HE DID IT FOR JOSHUA., HE WILL DO IT FOR YOU!!!! The Isrealites cross the Red Sea with Moses upon dry land, here they go again with Joshua crossing the Jordan on dry land!!!

17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

  5. MY GOD NEVER CHANGES!!!!!

  6. iLove to Grow in the Word

Joshua 3:7 NLT The LORD told Joshua, “Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses.

This scripture is amazing in the fact that God spoke to Joshua and told him that He was going to make him a great leader. The key to becoming a great leader is first finding favor with God. Joshua had found great favor with God because he had faithfully served the man of God. The next key to becoming a great leader is to hear and obey the voice of God. Joshua stepped out on faith as he sent the priests straight into harms way into the overflowing Jordan river.

  7. 1 And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.

There is something to be said about rising early. Every great man of God that I hear of rises early in the morning to spend time with the Lord. This is a type of giving God your first fruit. If we will give God the first part of our day then he takes care of the rest. I defiantly can tell the difference in my day when I get up early and spend time in the word versus rushing off without it.

    Genesis 19:
27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:

    Genesis 28:
18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

    Exodus 8:
20 And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

Luke 21:“And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.”
    ‭‭
    Psalms 63:1

“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;”

So many examples of the great ones in the bible rising early to meet with God. Thank God for giving us another morning to meet with him.

  8. 7 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

We do not need to lift up ourselves. When God is ready he will make a way for us.

  9. “After three days the officers went all through the camp. They gave orders to the people. They said, “Watch for the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. The priests, who are Levites, will be carrying it. When you see it, you must move out from where you are and follow it. Then you will know which way to go. You have never gone this way before. But don’t go near the ark. Stay about 1,000 yards away from it.””
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭3:2-4‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

After reading this chapter I can see the importance of  communication. The communication was from among the leadership of the congregation. As we move into new territory it’s important that we are all speaking the same thing and possessing the right attitude.

  10. “And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Joshua had no doubt that God it wasn’t capable of bringing them through all their trials and tribulations he knew God was a just God and that he had purpose for his people.

I trust my pastor I’m going to follow him

  11. 3 giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. 4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits[a] between you and the ark; do not go near it.”

Thank you Jesus for being my provider and protector! God lead the way for his people because he knew they didn’t know where to go and he’s doing the same for us. In spiritual scene we may not know which way to go or what to do next. But God is always right there with us leading the way! What a mighty God we serve. Thank you Lord for leading me to the path you have for me!

  12. 13 The priests will carry the Ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth. As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall.” (NLT)

Obedience allowed the people of Isreal to pass the river and into the land they were promised. We too must continue to obey our Man of God and the Word of God.

Imagining how awesome it would have been to pass that river, the song we sang last night came back to mind:
“What a mighty God we serve! What a mighty God we serve! Angels bow before Him, heaven and earth adore Him. What a mighty God we serve!”

  13. 3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.

Pofw is moving to a new place we have never been before. It would be foolish for us to move and begin to each do our own thing in hopes to fulfill something. We need to be sensitive to the Holy Ghost, and when we see the spirit move and pastor lead us then we follow. Our focus will still be on saving souls but somethings we do may need to change. Change can be uncomfortable and sometimes scary but in order to advance the kingdom of God we cannot focus on what we have always done or what we want to do, but we need to submit to God and our Godly leadership. We are here to impact lives to change the future.

  14. Joshua 3:7And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with me.

I Chronices 29:25 And the Lord magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such Royal Majesty as had not been on any King before him in Israel.

II Chron.1:1 And Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the Lord his God was with him, and magnifying him exceedingly.

I believe God is making Pastor / POFW great among the CITY of Fort Worth!

  15. FOLLOW THE GLORY

3 And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

The human nature is to get it done NOW. Waiting and patience is often a frustrating challenge. We are often pressed into situations with a holding pattern to see if we will wait on GOD or just go ahead at our desire.

Here we see the anticipation of group of people that have wondered for 40 years carrying the promise of a new land, a new home and a bright future. However Joshua didn’t just allow them to go in at their leisure and desire.

We are living dangerously when we go ahead of the GLORY of GOD. Ministers especially struggle in this area. Remember it took GOD 40 years in a desert to prepare Moses and another 40 years in the wilderness to prepare Joshua. Ministry development is one of the slowest developing processes known to man.

There are very few instant success in The MINISTRY. Make sure to FOLLOW THE GLORY.

  16. 5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

The LORD has given me this Scripture before. And there was definitely a wonder that was done the very next day. As we march into our promised land we must remember to not be conformed to the things of this world. We are a holy people. We must keep ourselves sanctified. The LORD has done many miraculous things in our midst, but there are greater things yet to come very soon. Get ready, POFW! sanctify yourselves, for the LORD your GOD is about to do a wonder among you!!!!!

  17. 5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

God is a God of details. He had specific instructions for Joshua to give to the people, and the people needed to not only hear the instructions but follow them in order for the Lord to do wonders among them.

It’s so easy to think we can skip a detail here and there and still have the same results. Many people today think they can skip the life of separation, holiness unto the Lord and still end of with the same results of eternal life with the Lord, however God’s word is specific and we must follow the letter to the dotting of the “i” and the crossing of the “t” if our goal is to have everlasting life with our King of Kings.

  18. 14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;

HALLELUJAH. ..again, he made them to cross through a sea, but this time they had to do their part, then God did his, God can do so many things for us right away! But I need to show God I’m gonna be obedient and do exactly what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants…I was told once that doing more than what your told is disobedience, because God is a God of order and he has a reason why he has me do one thing an someone else another. Obedience is the key!

  19. Joshua 3:3-4
    3) And they commanded the people, saying, When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priest’s the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
    4) Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.

We are getting ready to move! We are going a way that we’ve never been before. It’s important for us to Keep Our Eyes Focused On Jesus and Not Move Till Pastor Does. Stay Back A Little and Watch Pastor, then we will know which way to go. If we try to get ahead of God and Pastor, we will get lost on the journey.

God has an order for everything. GOD, Pastor, Us.
Let everything we do be done decently and in order and we’ll make it to the Land God has Promised Us.

  20. 16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.
this is the second account of the people of God passing over on dry ground. First it was with the children of Israel at the Red Sea and now it’s over Jordan River. what an amazing experience it must have been to have been a part of such a great miracle! today God still works miracles in our lives he still allow his people to see his power and His glory in miraculous ways. He

  21. 17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.

When we listen to the man of God and follow the direction of God he will make the impossible possible

  22. 15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)

16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

    Stepping into your promise.

How long have you waited for your promise? You know the one that you put on the back burner because you thought it was too much. Yeah, that one.
Now I had a 4.0 in school and my favorite class was math. So in math there is what’s called “variables.” And as it implies those variables are what change the outcome of any given equation. Now apply that to your promise and let’s say that we have the “God ‘variable” now add your promise. What do you get? Remember even though the children of Isreal had to wait for 40 years before they acquired their promise. Hold on and take note that we are God’s children.

  23. 15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)

16 That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

  24. 5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

Tomorrow is not guaranteed to us, that’s why we need to make sure that we try to improve ourselves and keep living a holy life every day, because we never know what will happen the next day.

  25. What a wonderful message in Proverbs today.

Prov 18:1 Loners who care only for themselves spit on the common good. MSG
Prov 18:1 Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.

There is safety in numbers. This is more than old cliché. In a group we feel less vulnerable, less likely to be attacked and we can blend in with the crowd. A group can be our security, our shield. While there is safety in numbers, there is only one number one – Jesus. If the Lord is not our leader we stand alone even in a crowd.

  26. Uncharted Waters

4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.

Moses has died and Joshua stands at the edge of the Jordan river. Normally the Jordan is about 100ft wide but the stakes are higher because the river is flooding. Joshua could have been thinking how am I going to lead all the people across, or where will it lead to? Instead he understands God has a plan. He himself will lead them just as he did with the pilar by day and fire by night. The uncharted waters God leads us to he will bring us through if we follow him. It may all seem new and nerve racking but God has promised that he will instruct us (Ps 32:8), has plans for us (Jer 29:11) but we must choose to follow him (Jn 7:17).

  27. 15 And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)

It’s when they put their faith to work and trusted in the Lord, that they got their miricle. Too many times we get busy waiting on God to take care of our situation all while he’s been waiting on us to just take the first step!

  28. 5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for to morrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

Always be sanctified for the Lord will prepare to do what he has commanded us to do. We have to be like the Lord in every way no matter what we may be going through. Don’t let the things of this world consume you to do things that are not of the Lord. Nothing in this world is worth loosing your salvation for. Santify yourself upon the Lord so he may use us. Don’t wait till you feel prepared because were never going to feel prepared. Just let God use you, do the natural and let God do the supernatural. Let’s be on Jesus time not on our time!!!! Be the difference that this world needs. That person that is helping others go to heaven. Keep your eyes upon the Lord!!!

  29. Yet Israel’s faith needs strengthen and God provides a sign. Joshua tells Israel that when priests carry the ark of God into the Jordan River then in flood stage it’s waters will dry up. This miracle happens as the whole people cross the governed on dry ground. A confident Israel and the fearful Canaanites are about to meet in the Conquests first battle aware that God is with Israel .

  30. It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho.
    Joshua 3:15-16 NLT
    http://bible.com/116/jos.3.15-16.NLT

To be a leader you must be willing to get your geet wet so that others can come and walk on dry ground. So thankful for all our leadership starting with our pastor that are always willing to get thier feet wet and are willing to lead us by example to the promise land.

  31. Joshua 3 10 This is how you will know that the Living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perzzites, Girgashites, Amorires and Jebusites. See the Ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. Now then choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel one from each tribe. And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord of all the earth set foot in the Jordan its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and sand up in a heap. So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan the priests carrying the Ark of the covenant went ahead of them. Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is called the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground while all Israel passed crossing on dry ground.

  32. 17 Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed as the people passed by. They waited there until the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground.

What a plan by God! Leads Israel out of Egypt across the sea on dry ground, and now across the Jordan on dry ground again. If the current generation did not witness the miracle of the past, now they experienced it.

  33. Verses 3 & 4 talk about keeping a distance from the ark while following it. It is a holy object and deserved the distance between the holiness of God and the carnality of people. The same with the platform in the Church. We don’t let our children run and play on the platform as Bro Merriman taught. It is a place where the holiness of God dwells and it must be respected by all.

  34. Joshua 3:17 (NLT)
17 Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed as the people passed by. They waited there until the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground.

The people were moving into the promised land. This was the moment of transition and change. The 45 year long journey would come to an end and they would step foot as a people on the land God promised to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses.

When the waters stopped flowing upstream it made it safe for the people to walk across and the priests to carry the ark. The ark was heavy and soft wet ground would cause the men to sink.

Yet God made a way. The ground they crossed was dry. The transition was smooth. I believe the way to the building has been challenging but we will transition smoothly. Because this is God’s will for his people.

  35. The ark, which was since the making of the covenant the special shrine and seat of God’s presence, went before to show the people that God, through its medium, was their leader. They were to follow at a distance that they might the better observe and mark how the miracle was accomplished.

  36. 7 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

8 And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.

So I’m speculating that this is just a mere few days after the death of Moses. God came to Joshua and told him that all of Israel would look upon him as they did Moses. This is what God wants from his children. For me this means that God has put Pastor Watts before me as Moses and Joshua with the Israelites. God is awesome and I will learn to grow in His word through the teachings of the leaders of POFW. Thank all of you for helping me to grow in God’s word and for guiding me to be the man that God called me to be………Thank you Jesus and Amen!!!!!

  37. This chapter parallels the crossing of the Red (Reed) Sea. Just as Moses led them to a new land through waters, Joshua does the same with the Jordan river. One may argue it is a type of baptism for the new generation that has risen up. It may also be argued that it is juxtaposition of the Red Sea and evidence of God’s favor on Joshua as the successor of Moses.

  38. “And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.” The word of God (Jesus) said they waited until, all had passed over. They stood firm (held their position) until all made it (none were forgotten or left behind). One that is willing to help another “pass over” so that all can make the journey, is surely in agreement with the parable of the lost coin; “Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?” Dear God (Judge), let me never lose sight that all are valuable, and let my ways be pleasing unto you, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  39. “And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.” They were too follow after they had seen. The priests labored as they went before the people, just as the Lord had instructed. God help us see as you see, and do what is pleasing too you, in Jesus name.

  40. 7 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

There is no need to magnify yourself God will magnify those that faithfully labor for His Kingdom.

  41. The power of unity and obedience! The isrealites obeyed and God honored their obedience! You never can go wrong with trusting God! He knows the end from the beginning!

  42. 1 And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over

Sometimes we have to start by getting up, and beginning to move as Jesus leads, that way we might see the mighty miracles wrought by God.

  43. Commanding the people: When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God being borne by the Levitical priests, set out from where you are and follow it. Yet a space must be kept between you and it, about 2,000 cubits by measure; come not near it, that you may [be able to see the ark and] know the way you must go, for you have not passed this way before.

It is of great importance to be able to first listen and then follow directions. We should not try and get ahead of God.

  44. 2 And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;

  45. 5. NLT Then Joshua told the people, ” Purify yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do great wonders among you.” THANK YOU LORD !!
