Joshua 5

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.

12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

  1. 5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

Just because our children are raised on a pew and never miss a service does not guarantee them a ride to heaven. Just because our children know every bible story from front to back does not guarantee them a ride to heaven.

Our children need a personal relationship with God. How do you teach a child to have a relationship? First, they need to know how to listen. We teach this by listening to them. They must know that parents are not perfect. We all make mistakes and need to repent not only to God but to one another. Apologize to your child if you have done something to apologize for. Just because we are parents does not grant us the right to never have to apologize. Teach them how to forgive and take responsibility for their actions. Don’t push our shortcomings onto them. Just because we hate lima beans does not mean they have to hate lima beans. Allow them to learn if they like lima beans.

They must learn how to deal with disappointment and loss. An overprotected child is an incomplete child. Life is real. Life has disappointments and loss. They need to learn how to deal with life. If the family has lost a loved one; do not hide your emotions, let this be a learning experience for them. Our children must know that we love them unconditionally. Finally, allow them to be who they are going to be. It might be the family tradition that the boys grow up to be carpenters, masons or electricians to carry on the family name. However, this your son may want something different. He would need to know that even if he is not a carpenter he will still be loved and accepted.

  2. When they needed manna, it fell; when they could get food from the land, the manna stopped. When they were about to take Jericho, the “captain of the host of the Lord” was standing there with sword drawn.

God always knows exactly where we are and what we need!

  3. So many things that come to mind in this short chapter. The beginning reminds me that God takes care of our enemies and we have nothing to fear. Then we see Joshua’s obedience to what God commanded for his people (The People of Israel). We then see how God always provided for His people, with every provision needed. The end of the chapter says “God’s army commander ordered Joshua, “Take your sandals off your feet. The place you are standing is holy.” Joshua did it.” Once again we see the obedience of Joshua, he didn’t question or gripe; but, just did it!

  4. Reading this chapter reminds me of the song “He’s an on time God”
    He’s an on time God,
    Yes He is,
    He’s an on time God,
    Yes He is.
He may not come when you want Him,
But He’ll be there right on time.
    He’s an on time God,
    Yes He is.

  5. 12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

  6. 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

Just an observation of how the Lord appeared to Jushua just like he did with Moses. In here we find that the angel did not stop Jushua from worshiping but rather asked him to remove his shoe for the land he was standing on was holy. When Moses had the encounter with the Lord on the burning bush the same words were spoken to him. Other instances where there were agels speaking to men then commanded the men not to worship and to get up for they worship the almighty as well.

  7. “The manna stopped coming down the day after they ate the food that was grown in the land. The people of Israel didn’t have manna anymore. Instead, that year they ate food that was grown in Canaan.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭5:12‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

God is so good! He provided right to the moment. Thank you Jesus for the land that will provide for us.

  8. iLove to grow in the Word
““Do not shout; do not even talk,” Joshua commanded. “Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout. Then shout!””
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭6:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Simple obedience led to a great miracle. How many times has the pastor asked us to shout… as some of us have sat their like a bump on a log? How many miracles have we missed out on because we don’t follow simple instructions?

  9. How to discern His voice

One of the most easiest way to learn how to discern God’s voice is to talk to Him EVERYDAY!!
When you build a relationship with someone you will begin to recognize their voice without having to see them. Just as a new baby learn his mother’s voice, so should we learn our Heavenly Father’s voice and that is learn by HEARING. Remember to always put a side a time to talk and LISTEN to Jesus everyday.

In this verses we see Joshua’s disposition. Joshua is no dummy. First, he wants to know who he is and if he is friendly or not. He wants to know which team is the captain on? Once he reveals himself to Joshua; his first reaction is to humble by falling on his face and praise. Then, since Joshua knows God, he knows this must be important, so he puts himself available to God by asking what does the Lord wants?
Joshua’s relationship with God is so strong, he knows his voice, he recognize His ways, and he is determine to serve. How do we know that? He is OBEDIENT. When ask to remove his shoes for he is standing on Holy ground, it says at the end of verse 15 “And Joshua did so”. I wonder what will happen if next time God calls our name and says: “Hey, Bro/Sis I want you to be a Sunday school teacher.” Instead of the regular “why?”, “are you sure?”, “I don’t know?”. (I know that happens because as a former teacher you have no idea how many times we hear that phrase and believe it or not adults are the same way for I taught college level.) or God may say: “Bro/Sis I want you to drive the buses.” again the response is “why?”, “are you sure?”, “I don’t know?”. Can you imagine if we were like Joshua and our verse finished – “And Bro/Sis did so.”
As we relocate to our new and beautiful building and immediately it begins to grow EXPEDITIOUSLY we are going to need to have Joshua’s mind set. We need to be able to discern HIS voice, we need to be HUMBLE, we need to PRAISE GOD, we need to TRUST and be OBEDIENT. Don’t you think that if God ask you to do something He is going to give you the ability, knowledge, and confidence????

Lord Jesus we pray you may change our minds to reflect your desires in our lives. Change our hearts to learn to be strong and courageous and don’t give into the fear of not knowing. Help us Trust you, FOR WE KNOW ALL YOU DO IS FOR THE GOOD OF THOSE WHO LOVE YOU AND ARE CALLED ACCORDING TO YOUR PURPOSE. May we all learn to discern your voice by enjoying daily talks and learn to listen, so the next time you speak we can say “What saith my Lord unto his servant?” May we always be ready to serve you and others. In Jesus Name AMEN.

  10. 15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

  11. 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

  12. 15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

    Joshua did soooo……..

Being obedient, is evident when there is a relationship with GOD.

More like you JESUS, I wanna be more like YOU!

  13. 11 The very next day they began to eat unleavened bread and roasted grain harvested from the land.
12 No manna appeared on the day they first ate from the crops of the land, and it was never seen again. So from that time on the Israelites ate from the crops of Canaan. (NLT)

My God is Jehovah Jirah! He provides what we need, when we need it, and how we need it!

  14. GROW

We witness another transition in this passage. The children of Israel had been fed by GOD everyday with manna (supernatural provision). The children of Israel are now possessing their promised land and are becoming self supportive. The begin to mature in the process of possession.

What I see is that GOD fed them through the wilderness and now they are to feed themselves. Understanding that GOD is still feeding them, only they must gather and eat their own food. As we GROW in GOD we will surpass the process where we must be fed by GOD. We must progress to learn how to feed ourselves with the provision that GOD provides.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  15. 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
Joshua had a heart that was passionate about the things of God so much that when he saw the angel before he knew what it was he asked “are you for us or against us”! He was zealous and passionate about the things of God. The angel reminded him that he was standing on holy ground and that he should respect that. Anytime we enter the precence of God we are on holy ground and should be respectful of that.

  16. 1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.

I notice here that the Lord told Joshua to circumcise “again”. Circumsion for us is repentance, cutting away our the flesh, turning aside from things that please us. This is something that we must do again and again until the second coming of Christ. Just like in this example, it’s not a one time deal.

  17. Joshua 5:8-10
And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

God removed the reproach of Egypt off the Israelites, after they were circumcised, and they dwelt in Gilgal, upholding the feast. Today God removes the reproach of the world off of us after we circumcise our hearts. Even when we leave our Egypt there is still a space of time that we need to be made whole. We need to dwell in our Gilgal and keep the feasts and commandments of the Lord. This is true for our new converts as well. God removes the sin and fills them with the Holy Ghost but if we don’t show them how to dwell in that freedom of sin they will go back to what they know.

  18. 10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.

12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year

God provided for them while they were in the wilderness everyday, they didn’t have to want for anything. And now they are in a land that they were given because he made it possible for them to have it, and they are eating food that they didn’t have to plant or water or anything, GOD DID THAT! He does the same thing for us. Hes always giving and providing and all he asks in return is some Thanks, Obedience, Praise. The song that pops in my head is ” HE KEEPS ON DOING GREAT THINGS FOR ME ”

Thank you Jesus for doing Great and Awesome things in My life and the Lives of my Church family Thank you for allowing me to be apart of this Journey that we are about to embark on!

  19. 9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.

  20. 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

We need to be so passionate about hearing the voice of the Lord that we wouldn’t even begin to hesitate as He instructs us on what to do, no matter how big or small we think it is, It will always amount to something greater in the eyes of God!

  21. Joshua 5:10-11 (NLT)
    10) While the Israelites were camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they celebrated Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month.
    11) The very next day they began to eat unleavened bread and roasted grain harvest from the land.
    12) No manna appeared on the day they first ate from the crops of the land, and it was never seen again. So from that time on the Israelites ate from the crops of Canaan.

God supplied the children of Israel with manna while they were in the wilderness.
Now He is supplying them with the crops of Canaan.
God never stopped supplying their need – He was just doing it in a different and better way.

Just because God may not be supplying your need the way He used to – remember He’s going to do it in a different and better way for you.

Stand on His Word and Promise today. Phil. 4:19, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

  22. The commander of the Lord ’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did as he was told.
    Joshua 5:15 NLT

In order to be before His presence we must first be clean and take off all our sins in order for the Lord to speak to us.

  23. 6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey

    Our disobedient will cost us

  24. Joshua 5:9 (KJV Strong’s)
9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

Gilgal means rolling. This is the place God rolled away the reproach, the shame of Egypt away from them. Once the people dealt with their flesh then God could move and bless. Egypt was getting in the way. It had to be removed.

Once the reproach of sin and worldliness got out of the way two amazing things happened.

First their was plentiful harvest. The blessing was so great that the mannah they had lived off of simply disappeared. They went from having just enough to an over abundance.

Second the captain of the Lord’s army showed up. Once Egypt was dealt with the army could go forth and conquer.

Harvest and Victory come to the circumcised in heart.

  25. 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

You can’t ask the Lord if he is on your side. The question is if you are on his side. The Lord doesn’t choose sides. He said I am the way. You have to choose for yourself. This is why it is hard for some to make a decision to go to church. It means that you have to line up with him. Most of the time people want God to line up with what they are doing. The emergent church…

  26. 1 When all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings who lived along the Mediterranean coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan River so the people of Israel could cross, they lost heart and were paralyzed with fear because of them.

Even without witnessing the miraculous, all the kings feared the Lord. They knew they would had no chance to defeat the Israelites. We today, who have witness miracles and wonders, some still don’t fear the Lord.

  27. 12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
God is a provider he never fails! He is an untime God !

  28. Before the conquest can continue the people must be spiritual prepared .Joshua has all the man circumcised sand when this important sign of covenant t relationship with God is complete the Lara elites celebrate the first pass over in Canaan .when Israel is prepared a supernatura visitor appears to Joshua as Commander of the Lords armban and gave the strangest orders e we recorded in the annals of war fare

  29. 7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

After reading this chapter. I realized that to be circumcised meant to be removed of the world. So I have to circumcise my flesh of the things that I like in the world. It is a hard thing to do, when you have been of the world for so long. I am learning though how to give up worldly things and thoughts. Like tonight I had an internal issue, where my spirit was fighting off worldly thoughts. It caught me off guard and I felt a weight on my shoulders, but after seeking God and giving it all to Him. I felt better. I have to separate myself from my flesh, therefore circumcise myself from myself. God is awesome……..Thank you Jesus…..Amen!!!!

  30. “And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?” The word of God (Jesus) stated he was not on either side; however he was on God’s (Creator) side. This is all the more why one is also wise in truly seeking the word of God, on one’s own actions. Dear God, (Judge) open our eyes and ears that we may clearly know if our ways please you or self, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  31. “And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.” The Lord supplied the sustenance for their journey; however once they arrived it stopped. The Lord’s word is the same for us today, as it provides sustenance for our journey. God help us see that we will need your sustenance too make it to you, in Jesus name.

  32. God has always taken care of his people. No matter what get’s thrown at us, our God knows how to provide. He is a way maker.

  33. 9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.

As they renew the covenant of Abraham by circumcision the reproach of Egypt is removed and God provides them with fruit (corn) of the promised land. He confirms he is with Joshua by sending his angel.

  34. v9 And the LOED said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

Our all powerful GOD IS is able to accomplish HIS good pleasure carry out HIS decreed will, and keep HIS holy promises.

  35. 9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

This is the day I am waiting for, when the generations of children that are born in the church not knowing what living in “Egypt” is, being born a free people, all the children of the new baby’s of the church that have the privilege of being 2nd generation Apostolic.

The reproach of Egypt the enemy used against the 1st generation has been rolled away. God can lift up the generational worldliness the 1st generation has given. No more 2nd generation alcoholics, or adultery or idolaters.

    In Jesus Name!

  36. “And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭5:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The transition from manna to new food is right in front of us. After the children had the excess cut away, they then started having the fruit of the land again. They had to eat nasty old corn one time before they were able to go in and get the full miracle.

  37. Making room for your blessing.

We must get ready and make room for our blessings. New territory equals new opportunities to grow and cut things off from our lives that are hindering us. Get ready to Grow.

  38. 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?

14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

  39. 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

  40. 5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

As we came out of our bondages, we learned what it was to sacrifice and cut away our fleshly desires. Those raised in church often think that they have made big sacrifices, and some have, but what they sacrificed really wasn’t as much as Jesus was wanting to see. Many times, our fleshly desires will not allow us to sacrifice the way Jesus is wanting us too.

  41. The Israelites had been in the wilderness for forty years and those born in the desert hadn’t been circumcised yet. After the Israelites entered in the promised land they weren’t confronted by the surrounding kings armies. They had already heard about how the Lord had dried up the Jordan river for them to cross over. Something amazing happens after a miracle takes place the enemy shakes and trembles, hearts melt and the courage of our enemies fall.

  42. 15. And the captain of the LORD’s host said unto Josh’-u-a, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Josh’-u-a did so. KJV I lift you up LORD !!!!

  43. This chapter reminds us of the folly of the people of Israel in the desert. During their wanderings, the people who were stiff neck slowly died off. Ironically, God practically still killed them off, but he did it in a way that didn’t make him look weak. By allowing them to die over time, no nation could say that he could not keep them alive. So, while Moses was able to save them through intercession, it merely only delayed the inevitable.
