Joshua 6

1 Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

2 And the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour.

3 And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.

4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord.

7 And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the Lord.

8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the Lord, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.

9 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

11 So the ark of the Lord compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.

13 And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the Lord, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.

16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the Lord hath given you the city.

17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18 And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.

19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord.

20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.

22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.

25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26 And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

27 So the Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

  1. 5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

  2. 6. And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the Lord hath given you the city.

    20. So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

They didn’t shout because the walls fell; the walls fell because they shouted.

Don’t wait ’till the battle is over – shout now!
You know in the end you’re gonna win!

  3. Joshua and the people of Israel were obedient to what God commanded. When Joshua spoke, the people moved the Bible says. We see our promise (POFW) and now it is time for us to move at God’s appointed time. Just like God was with Joshua as it says in the last verse of this chapter, He is with us…..thank you Jesus! God is fighting for us and He is on our side.

  4. The trumpet of war and vision was sounded from our pastor.

We have set foot and declared war we are taking this city one soul at a time.

“So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭6:20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  5. 18 “As for you, watch yourselves in the city under holy curse. Be careful that you don’t covet anything in it and take something that’s cursed, endangering the camp of Israel with the curse and making trouble for everyone. MSG
Be careful that you are not hiding anything that will curse your life with God. Don’t be foolish and think God doesn’t know what you are doing. Build your heart around the will of God…

  6. Meanwhile, Joshua said to the two spies, “Keep your promise. Go to the prostitute’s house and bring her out, along with all her family.” The men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, mother, brothers, and all the other relatives who were with her. They moved her whole family to a safe place near the camp of Israel.
    Joshua 6:22-23 NLT

Because of the actions of one woman, her WHOLE family was saved from the destruction of Jericho.
GOD did that for her AND they were taken to live with the Israelites, With THE PEOPLE OF GOD, and some people want to look down on others because they aren’t in church sitting next to them, so that gives the right to condemn them to hell? Just because they are not dressed right or because they don’t speak as we speak does not give us the right to frown upon or belittle others after all is said and done we will give an account. Watch it, just cause GOD is soooo merciful!!! HE IS SOOOO GOOD!!! Why would we want to represent HIM any other way than through HIS LOVE?
    HALELUJAH!!!

  7. iLove to Grow in the Word

26At that time Joshua invoked this curse:
“May the curse of the lord fall on anyone
who tries to rebuild the town of Jericho.
At the cost of his firstborn son,
    he will lay its foundation.
At the cost of his youngest son,
he will set up its gates.”

This scripture tells me that curses are real. The fulfillment of this curse happened long after Joshua’s death. The word of God is forever alive and it will fulfill itself and will not come back void.

1 Kings 16:34 NLT It was during his reign that Hiel, a man from Bethel, rebuilt Jericho. When he laid its foundations, it cost him the life of his oldest son, Abiram. And when he completed it and set up its gates, it cost him the life of his youngest son, Segub. This all happened according to the message from the LORD concerning Jericho spoken by Joshua son of Nun.

Note:Some have misunderstood this curse, believing Jericho would never be rebuilt. However, the curse only referred to the one who attempted to rebuild the city. The rebuilt Jericho appears in the New Testament as the place where Jesus healed two blind men (Matthew 20:29; Mark 10:46; Luke 18:35) and where Jesus met Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1–3). It is also mentioned in the account of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30). The city of Jericho exists still today, home to approximately 18,000 residents in the West Bank.

  8. “Then Joshua spoke to the two men who had gone in to check out the land. He said, “Go into the prostitute’s house. Bring her out. Also bring out everyone who is with her. That’s what you promised her you would do when you took an oath.””
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭6:22‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Accountability and Follow through lead to success and trust. And shows signs of great leadership.

  9. 10 “Do not shout; do not even talk,” Joshua commanded. “Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout. Then shout!” (NLT)

What a fixture of obedience and faith. They trusted and had faith that the Lord would deliver Jericho into their hands. Then their obedience was done without question. I think this command from Joshua would have been a real challenge for us today because we wouldn’t have immediately closed our mouths, but would have asked why and expected an entire explanation. By the time all that happens I’d have to wonder where our faith is at because then we have limited our own faith by knowing what’s going to happen. Sometimes, more often than we recognize, we just need to trust God and our Man of God when a conman is given. Let’s just have faith that if we obey, God will surely bless!

  10. 17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

The Lord doesn’t forget! He’ll always keeps His promises!

  11. If we follow the commandments of God, He will bring down walls and help us through whatever is confronting us.

  12. There must be one in every crowd…

I do not believe the warning to leave certain things alone were written by accident. Joshua knew his people. He knew there would be some that would want to take/partake of accursed things. How tiring and frustrating it is to continually remind people that certain things are not good for you and one should leave certain things alone; it is for your own good. However, some continue to push the limits and find themselves in trouble. Pay attention people! Learn from your mistakes, clean yourself up and move on!

  13. AVOID THE CURSED THINGS

GOD declared the state of the city and all that was in it to be accursed.

accursed – 2764. cherem, khay´-rem; from 2763; physical (as shutting in) a net (either literally or figuratively); usually a doomed object; abstr. extermination:—(ac-)curse(-d, -d thing), dedicated thing, things which should have been utterly destroyed, (appointed to) utter destruction, devoted (thing), net.

We place ourselves on dangerous ground when we take unto ourselves the accursed thing. Anything that GOD has rejected we should also reject and avoid.

Attitudes and spirits that do not support and promote the kingdom of GOD are the path to the accursed and eventually destruction.

  14. 1 Now the gates of Jericho were tightly shut because the people were afraid of the Israelites. No one was allowed to go out or in.

I’m sure the people of Jericho felt safe behind their walls. Thinking as long as the doors are closed we are safe. I’m sure they even ridiculed the Israelites for marching around the town and blowing their horns. But on the 7th day, the Lord showed his mighty power, tearing down the walls, and Jericho falling. Don’t believe you can hide behind something or someone, the Lord will find you.

  15. Joshua 6:3-5, 10, 15-16, & 20 (NLT)
    3) You and your fighting men should march around the town once a day for six days. 4) Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram’s horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the town seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. 5) When you hear the priests give one long blast on the rams’ horns, have all the people shout as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will collapse, and the people can charge straight into the town.

    10) Do not shout; do not even talk, Joshua commanded. Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout. Then shout!

    15) On the seventh day the Israelites got up at dawn and marched around the town as they had done before. But this time they went around the town seven times. 16) The seventh time around, as the priests sounded the long blast on their horns, Joshua commanded the people, Shout! For the LORD has given you the town!

    20) When the people heard the sound of the ram’s horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walks of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it.

These scriptures reminded me of something Pastor said last night in Bible Study. “Faith doesn’t always make sense.”. Hebrews 11:30 says, “By faith the walks ofJericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days ”

It takes FAITH to please God, and we must BELIEVE that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

    Have FAITH and BELIEVE !

  16. Only praise could be heard.

Hearing this story for many years. It didn’t don on me that the trumpets and horns were the only things allowed to “speak” until the great shout.

20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

When the youth went to NAYC last year. Bro.Stoneking spoke about the shout. How it literally shreds the air. When he gave the signal there was a great shout that erupted in the building. And now that I look back I wonder if that’s how the shout of this story happened? What a great experience that was. Sometimes you just have to shout it out loud.

  17. And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Joshua was honest and kept his word with Rahab and spared her and her family just as promised. His word was his bond and it meant something to him. we should value the commitments that we make to each other. r word should be our bond and people should know they can trust us by the things that we tell them. it is important to keep people’s confidence in order to do ministry and business.

  18. Such amazing obedience!

10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.

  19. 17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

  20. 20 NLT when the people heard the sound of the rams horns they shouted as loud as they could suddenly the walls of jericho collapsed and the israelites charged straight into the town and captured it

I want my praise to destroy walls in my life

  21. Joshua 6:20 (Message)
20 The priests blew the trumpets.
When the people heard the blast of the trumpets, they gave a thunderclap shout. The wall fell at once. The people rushed straight into the city and took it.

Simple obedience will take is a long way. Joshua did exactly as he was told and God wrought victory. We too have a chance for great things. All it takes is simple obedience and God will do the rest.

  22. 20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

  23. ““Do not take any of the things set apart for destruction, or you yourselves will be completely destroyed, and you will bring trouble on the camp of Israel.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭6:18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When we change our lives and truly commit ourselves to God, we must be careful not to take the darkness we use to live in with us. We cannot live with one foot in the world and one foot in the church, for if we do that we will eventually destroy ourselves.

  24. 10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.
Wow sometimes you may feel like your leader request for you to do so much, or it may not make any sence. If its in line with Gods word summit and be accountable . What would have happened if those isrealites didnt listen to their leader? There would have been disunity and confusion. We all know Gods plan works better when we are all in sync!

  25. 5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

With a shout we will have victory in Jesus name! And the walls of the enemy will come tumbling down.

  26. 1-5

Joshua is told to lead his people in.a.silent circuit o Jericho for six days. On the seventh day the people are to match around the city seven times. And hen at a signal everyone is to shout. Then God promised the walls will collapse.and the city will fall .

This brings back to me in a service in 2006 Before service some of.the brothers and I took the bus and picked up the homeless and brought them back to church for a service. The service got off to a slow start so Pastor had us March around the building seven times after returning in in the building what a move of God and a Holy Ghost service we had ,Praise God

  27. 18 And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.

There were things in the homes of these people that were used in worship of false gods and were accursed. Bringing these curious things into the camp of Israel would bring the spirit of the false gods into their midst, corrupting the people. If a tool belongs to Satan, he has a right to be where his tools are and the people needed to obey this simple command for their own protection.

  28. 8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the Lord, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them.
9 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.

Wow, the entire time they walked around the city, they played their horns giving praise unto God, without even saying a single word. Many times we forget that we can praise and worship Jesus without walk more than we ever thought, if we are unable to live the same like we teach…

  29. Joshua 6:27 So the Lord was with Joshua and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

An abstract of this story we find among the trophies of faith, Heb.11:30. “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.”

  30. 22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.

23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.

A good leader is a person of integrity and is faitful to his word.

  31. Set on a hill and probably thirty feet high, Jericho’s wall is a monstrous structure. To the approaching Israelite armies it may look like an impenetrable fortress. To the people of Jericho, this wall is absolute assurance that no army can ever invade the security of their city… or so they might think. After its tumbling fall, Jericho was thoroughly destroyed then subject to five centuries of erosion. This story is a reminder of the utter holiness and surpreme power of God and the reality that no obstacle is too big for Him nor could stand in the way when God is at work. We could perceive that the obstacles of life are too big to see past but God sees our future if we have faith and follow Him he will do the seemingly impossible.

  32. v23 And the young men that were spies went in,and brought out Rahab , and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and and left them without the camp of Israel.

By Rahab ‘s faith and her decision would have an effect upon her family.
They were all saved .Our decisions will affect our families.
We have no justification to blame GOD for loss when HE HAS MADE very provision for our safety.
Thank you JESUS for your Grace and Mercy.
Obedience to “work out their own salvation ” in accordance with HID direction.
    Philippians 2: 12-13

  33. 5. And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him. KJV Shout unto the LORD !!!!

  34. “And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.” The word of God (Jesus) may appear harsh to some that do not understand why; never the less disobedience also has a price. Dear God, thank you for those that have done what was necessary. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  35. “And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.” The Lord will use whomever he chooses and whenever he chooses, which we see here. The messengers did not judge Rahab, and therefore they were saved. God help us that we see all as souls that you can save, in Jesus name.

  36. 27 So the Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

So the Lord is with POFW and their fame is noised about throughout all THE REGION OF FT WORTH.

  37. 5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

Wow to have that kind of blessing from God. Joshua was truly a blessing to the children of Israel. To have that kind of devotion that just on His word. Joshua took up each day and did as the Lord commanded him and they were blessed. That is how I want to be in God’s eye, that kind of devotion. I strive everyday to get stronger in the word of God and to become a stronger Christian.

27 So the Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

    To have the favor of God that all nations know your name. There is no other way that I would want to be known; Toby Mac has a song that I think fits for me anyway;
‘ I don’t want to gain the whole world and lose my soul ‘. That is one line of the chorus. I could care less if the world knows me, but should it happen. I want it to be because God saw something in me that He wanted to show the world.

  38. 1 Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.

What anticipation the people must have felt knowing that they were going to take the city of Jericho. They were given instructions that would lead them to that victory.

God has given us a similar promise in our new location. From the very inception of POFW it was prophesied wherever our feet would go God would give us that land, and now we anxiously away May 15th – the day we take possession of a promise from the Lord. We must continue to work diligently to see the promise of harvest and revival that has been spoken once we obtain the promise of the building.

No time to lose, No time to waste, the time is now, don’t hesitate!

  39. What a great illustration of primeval war. In the mind of the ancients, wars were won by the gods they served. This is why I take more of an accommodation approach to how God deals with us. God is incomprehensible, but he has accommodated himself to us so that we might know him to a degree. During the conquest, God accommodates himself to the people of the earth with war. Thus, he shows himself strong to everyone. In this way, he establishes the weakness of the foreign idols and the strength of his own hand. This, I believe, is a big factor on why God chose war rather than just giving the land to the Israelites.

  40. “And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭6:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Joshua had such great faith that he told the people right away what to do. Part of their orders were to be quiet as they walked. He told them not even to speak. Can you imagine how some of these people may have been feeling. Thoughts like, “we just wondered in the dessert for how long and now we are marching around a walled city and we can’t even talk! ” Or, “Did God rally tell him this? It sounds crazy.” Or, “Why do we have to be quiet?” Or even, “Is it really necessary to shout or can I just say it in a louder voice than normal?”

So many different obstacles were there, but because he did not doubt he led the people. His instructions were clear and mirrored the voice of God. The walls came down because of their obedience and faith that God would do what he said he was going to do.

  41. 27 So the Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.

When the praises, miracles signs and wonders start going up in our new sanctuary, that town is going to take notice.

God has prepared us to take this city, to bring down its walls and take good there of. Let us do our part and not take any thin that is accursed.
