Joshua 7

1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the children of Israel.

2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.

3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!

8 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

10 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; and the household which the Lord shall take shall come man by man.

15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

17 And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

18 And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.

24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the Lord turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

  1. 10. But the LORD said to Joshua, ” Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this? 11. Israel has sinned and broken covenant! They have stolen some of the things that I commanded must be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings. NLT GOD IS GOOD !!!!

  2. 13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; and the household which the Lord shall take shall come man by man.

  3. 10. But the LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this? NLT

We can’t just lie on our face crying when things go wrong; we must get up, fix the problem, and carry on.

  4. 20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. (NLT)

Disobedience not only got Achan singled out but cost him his life, his family’s lives, and the lives of many other Isrealites that led to the end of their promised victories. Our decisions effect more than just ourselves!

  5. 10 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
Why are you on your face? I’ll give you the answer. Go, and right the wrong that has been done to me. Correct your mistake and I will give you victory. Simple as that.

  6. “And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the Lord shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭7:25‬ ‭KJV

  7. Do not go into battle without self evaluation and true heart repentance

  8. iLove to Grow in the Word

Joshua 7:6-7 NLT Joshua and the elders of Israel tore their clothing in dismay, threw dust on their heads, and bowed face down to the ground before the Ark of the LORD until evening. (7) Then Joshua cried out, “Oh, Sovereign LORD, why did you bring us across the Jordan River if you are going to let the Amorites kill us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side!

Joshua 7:10 NLT But the LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this?

Notice in these verses that Joshua and the Elders bowed down before the Lord and prayed until evening, but it wasn’t until Joshua addressed the Lord that the answer came. We can bow before the Lord as long as we want, maybe days, months, and even years, but it isn’t until we start talking and listening that we will receive direction.

  9. Going back to Joshua 6:18-19, “And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. But all the silver, and good, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.”

In Joshua 7, not only did Achan take of the accursed thing (a goodly Babylonian garment), but he took and hid two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight which belonged to the treasury of the LORD. And because of the act of Achan’s sin, all Israel suffered for it.

This made me think of IFT. God gave us a word, a promise, that if everyone gave 100% to IFT, He would bring in outside help for us. But because some have keep back (hidden) their share from God, we all have suffered for it.

IFT is this Sunday. Let’s give 100% and watch what God will do !

  10. WILLFUL DISOBEDIENCE BY THE CHOSEN

3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

Achan was one of the few CHOSEN to go to battle for the LORD. He was hand picked by his leader to go to battle. However he was willfully disobedient.

The disobedience cost Achan his family. We must be prayerful about our decisions.

  11. 11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

The actions of one disobedient man , But God said ” The Children of Isreal” sinned, not just one man. It’s funny how our actions affect others, his whole family had to pay for that sin, how many times has my family had to suffer due to my poor choices, Thank

  12. shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

Sin will take you farther than you want to go. The wages of sin is death. Our decisions affect others. When we choose Christ we choose life, when we choose sin we choose death. We may think we aren’t hurting anyone but the effects of our decisions are far reaching. It affects our family, friends, and those we have influenced.

  13. 12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.
God desires his people to be clean. we cannot allow ourselves to be consumed with the greed of this world because it is a form of idolatry. that is what Acon allow himself to do and as a result he cursed his own people. the house of God and the people of God must be clean, pure undefiled before God.

  14. 20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

This is what happens, all that it takes is one person. God knew who it was that had sinned by coveting. He wanted the person to come forth and confess his sin. God doesn’t play with those that sin against Him. I know that for a fact, even before I was saved. I was a hot mess and most of what I did I knew was wrong. God has a way of guiding us through even when we are disobedient. Achan lost his life and his family because he disobeyed the order of God. Not where I want to be, God has been so good to me and my family even when we were disobedient. He knows what He’s doing, don’t try to change it. Let God be that guiding light. God is good all the time………Thank you Jesus….Amen!!!

  15. 1 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

Everyone suffers when sin is in the body of believers. Achan is one that committed the sin, but it cost his entire family their lives.

When born again christians sin it causes the entire body to suffer because there is no longer unity, which bring victory.

It may not be stealing, but it may be sowing discord, or simple disobedience of lack of submission, regardless big or small, sin is sin and it can cost an entire congregation from fulfilling their purpose.

  16. 19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

You cannot hide your sins from God! When you sin against God and try to hide it, it not only makes it worse for you but for the people you have surrounded yourself with as well!

  17. 10 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

  18. 19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

Two things I pull from you, in everything give praise to God, even when you are put in a situation that you may have to confess something you may have done and of course, always tell the truth and be honest

  19. 10 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

  20. When praise steals from the promise land.

18And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

We see here that Achan was of the tribe of Judah. We also see what happens when your praise steals from promise. The attitude of praise is key here. Because if you have a stinking attitude of praise God will not honor it. Just like with Cain and Able. God honored Able’s sacrifice more than Cain’s because of his attitude. His praise didn’t say look at what I did or what I got. Achan wanted to show later on his spoil for what HE did. Not what God did. So let us be careful to not let our attitude of praise get in the way of our obedience and blessings.

  21. 1 But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the LORD.a A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things, so the LORD was very angry with the Israelites. Achan was the son of Carmi, a descendant of Zimrib son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.

Even though you get directions from the man of God, people continue to disobey. Achan knew it was wrong, but ignored what was said to him. The temptation was there, and he took it, instead of ignoring it. We should stay focused advise given to us from the man of God.

  22. 1But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the LORD.a A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things, so the LORD was very angry with the Israelites. Achan was the son of Carmi, a descendant of Zimrib son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.

  23. Joshua 7:13 (Message)
13 “So get started. Purify the people. Tell them: Get ready for tomorrow by purifying yourselves. For this is what God, the God of Israel, says: There are cursed things in the camp. You won’t be able to face your enemies until you have gotten rid of these cursed things.

    Beware the cursed things.

The enemy understands our weaknesses. He knows strategically how to defeat us. If he can just get us to acquire cursed things then ha has us. We become ineffective.

    Joshua 7:12 (Message)
12 The People of Israel can no longer look their enemies in the eye—they themselves are plunder. I can’t continue with you if you don’t rid yourselves of the cursed things.

We ourselves become plunder when we hold onto cursed things. We need to rid ourselves of cursed things and know we have guaranteed victory over the enemy.

  24. 7-14
    Come forward
This descriptive phrase suggest how the guilty person was discovered. It is most likely the Urim and Thummim were used by the high priest to indicate yes or no as tribes then clans then families and finally people.came forward.to determine the guilty man .

  25. 19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

Before Achin could confess, Joshua instructed him to give God glory. I believe this kept Achin from making excuses or having self pity. Instead he declared that he deliberately sinned. Sadly it cost him and his family their lives plus the 36 other families that lost a husband and father.

  26. God’s commandments should not be taken lightly. But we should also ask God’s guidance in everything we do.

  27. It was not good even to think that God was not watching. Lord put in us a fear that we will not sin against thee. J. Soliz

  28. 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

Often times in our dark moments God will send a messenger out way to remind us of his commandments to keep us alinged within our relationship with him. We often question things running around seeking out answers and opinions from others. This made me think of the many times God Sent someone my way but I disobeyed by not listening to what was being told to me. Often times when we find ourselves in this situation we should be willing to allow our flesh to die so he may increase his will in us. However this process won’t occur until we make that change happen. Don’t be disobedient in your tithing not your ift pledge. Obedience is a key factor to grow our relationship with God

  29. Achan not only paid for his disobedience; but, his entire family did too. We must be obedient to all of the Lord’s commands; not only the ones we want too. Disobedience brought forth lies, deceit and eventually death. Numbers 32:23 AMP says “But if you do not do this, behold, you will have sinned against the Lord; and be sure that your sin will find you out.”

  30. If we don’t teach our children that Satan is bad he will destroy them, by using them against us parents and telling them that discipline is not good when in fact I specifically remember when I was younger I was whipped with a board that said Whipped with Love wrote on it. Once I did something wrong and I was aware of what I did I went to my room thought about it and then that gave my dad time to cool off and then I got whipped on the bootie, needless to say I never did that again.
What I got out of Chapter 7 is when you feel bad about doing something wrong against God you feel it in your heart an it makes you gray, and guilty about doing something wrong like…
vs.-20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord

  31. When we do things that don’t please God we are not only affecting our souls but others around us. We need to be careful do not live in the moment but to make sure the things that we do is in line with God we do not want to cause pur families to pay for our sins that we have committed. God help us to make wise choices.

  32. “Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭7:26‬ NKJV)

And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day,…. That is, at the place where he suffered, or where they laid his ashes, they heaped up a pile of stones over him, as a monument whereby it might be known hereafter where he was executed and was buried; and which pile continued to the writing of this history

  33. “When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.” The word of God (Jesus) said he took and hid; because he desired (coveted). The difference between then and today is the fact that one today can read how God (Judge) feels about it. Dear God, help us not let our desires come before yours, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  34. “Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.” The children of Israel were told to cleanse themselves. They were provided with an opportunity to take care of it, before the Lord took care of it. God help us grasp that it is far better too humble ourselves before you do it, in Jesus name.

  35. Achan paid for his sins with his life. Some sins can destroy our lives and others. Drugs is a modern day example. May we live in the livery of Christ and walk after him.

  36. God cannot continue to be involved in something or someone if they don’t want Him there. Either God is above all or your own personal idols are (work, power, attention, money).

  37. 16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

When you sin, the first thing leaves you is your PRAISE!

Can I be that we have lost many battles because of our lack of praise? Can it be that your praise will dictate what the outcome of your situation?

Thats what happen to Israel in this passage. When your praise suffers, you start losing your battles.

  38. 13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

God cannot be in the midst of sin. If things are going wrong we have to check oursleves first and see if we have a kingdom issue.

  39. 11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

All the people are at fault even though only one of the men did it, the whole bunch are blamed.

  40. Sometimes we try to pretend that we can sin and no one else will be effected. The sin of Achan wakes us up to the stark reality that no one sins in a vacuum. Like a rock thrown into the middle of a still pond, the ripple effect of our sins touch everyone and everything around us. Achan thinks he can save some of the plunder that is devoted to God. Just a few of the best things: clothing, silver and gold. He can gather them with no one watching and bury them under the tent. He only thinks he’s getting away with it. God is always watching. Achan’s rebellion costs him his life, and the ripple effect of his sin reaches his family and everything he owns. This picture is crystal clear: There are no secret sins.
