Joshua 8

8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.

8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the Lord shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

9 Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

18 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the Lord which he commanded Joshua.

28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.

29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in mount Ebal,

31 As Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.

32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

  1. The vs 18-22 stood out to me in Chapter 8:

22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape

I can imagine running here and there and not out of the line of fire with God if I didn’t make the right choice in following God again. Thank you Jesus for forgiving me everyday for things I do that are sinful and things I do that I don’t know that are sinful. I don’t want to be burned.

  2. 30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in mount Ebal,

When GOD gives you the victory, don’t forget to thank HIM!!!

  3. The battle against the enemy that we are engaged in dows not have to be fought alone. God has always been there for his people and he will continue to do the same. Fear of the enemy and doubt is not something a child of God should have. He has made us to be more than conquers.

  4. 33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

Being reminded often of the Word of God in our lives is good for us. His Word will begin to become a part of us.

Psa_119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

  5. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

One mistake that I made in my walk is thinking that I knew enough Word to live of off. Most of the time that I was asked about my knowledge of the Word, it was all memories of scriptures that were used in all the preaching that I had heard growing up. Since I grew up in the Apostolic faith, that was what I relied on.

The Lord as humbled me and shown me how great and expansive he is. That he is so amazing, so great, that I can never stop learning about him and his mercy, grace and love toward us. That his word is filled with so much revelation ,wisdom, and knowledge I can never learn everything.

So I must keep reading his Word!

  6. DEAL WITH THE DISOBEDIENCE: THEN GOD GIVES THE VICTORY

8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

We learn from chapters 7 and 8 that there is NO ROOM for selfish ambitions, personal agendas or selfish disobedience when we are in a battle for the LORD. GOD led Josua to deal with the problem, (disobedience) that was within the camp before he dealt with the problem that was without the camp.

Ai was supposed to be an easy VICTORY, however the disobedience of 1 chosen leader caused many casualties and the death of a family. It is tempting to be selfish and disconnected from the the big picture, the whole vision when we only see, protect and provide for our own.

Joshua was no doubt rattled and shaken by the death of Achan and his family, however the mission was not complete. GOD encouraged Joshua to finish the MISSION.

As The POFW progress toward taking possession of the land on Westpoint, we make be prayerfully obedient for the good of the MISSION and the whole VISION. We should humbly seek GOD to keep our human spirits in check, our personal agendas submitted and our fleshly desires disciplined to follow and obey all that the LORD says through our Leadership.

Achan thought he knew what was best for his family and it cost him his family. Be very prayerful when you question or override leadership in the midst of battle.

  7. 18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Point the spear in your hand toward Ai, for I will hand the town over to you.” Joshua did as he was commanded.
19 As soon as Joshua gave this signal, all the men in ambush jumped up from their position and poured into the town. They quickly captured it and set it on fire. (NLT)

    Back to victory through obedience!

  8. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

Remember the words of the elders.

  9. 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
Joshua was determined to fully execute what God had told him to do was not discouraged by his previous failure but yet he was motivated by the victory that God promised him. Joshua realize that the power was not in him it was not by might nor by power but it was by the spirit of the Lord. we must recognize in our daily battles that we should not draw our hand back but pursue what God has called us to do to the fullest. because if God is with us who can defeat us?!

  10. 18 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand.

  11. iLove to Grow in the Word

“Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take all your fighting men and attack Ai, for I have given you the king of Ai, his people, his town, and his land.”
‭‭Noticed that God said to take all your fighting man, Joshua been to 30,000 men. There was a lot more than the first time when he only took 3000. It’s always wise to listen to the Lord’s advice rather than to lean on our own understanding

  12. 4with these orders: “Hide in ambush close behind the town and be ready for action.

Just like the enemy, he waits and ready to pounce on you when you least expect it. We must be aware all the time and be ready for anything the enemy brings our way.

  13. Verse 1 AMP “Now the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear or be dismayed (intimidated). Take all the men of war with you and set out, go up to Ai; see, I have given the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land into your hand.” Same verse MSG “God said to Joshua, “Don’t be timid and don’t so much as hesitate. Take all your soldiers with you and go back to Ai. I have turned the king of Ai over to you—his people, his city, and his land.” We cannot let discouragement, fear or intimidation bring us down; for we have victory in Jesus name.

  14. 3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

  15. Joshua 8:33-35 (NLT)
    33) Then all the Israelites – foreigners and native-born alike – along with the elders, officers, and judges, were divided into two groups. One group stood in front of Mount Gerizim, the other in front of Mount Ebal. Each group faced the other, and between them stood the Levitical priests carrying the Ark of the LORD’S Covenant. This was all done according to the commands that Moses, the servant of the LORD, had previously given for blessing the people of Israel.
    34) Joshua then read to them all the blessings and curses Moses had written in the Book of Instructions.
    35) Every word of every command that Moses had ever given was read to the entire assembly of Israel, including the women and children and the foreigners who lived among them.

Joshua read Every Word of Every Command to the Entire Assembly of Israel.
This made me think of Heb. 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is: but exhorting one another: and so much more, as ye see the day approaching.”

Thank You Pastor for reading, teaching, and preaching Every Word and Every Command of God to us at POFW.
Remember – don’t miss church but come together because 1) we need to hear the Word of God and 2) we need each other.

  16. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

It’s either the whole bible or none of the bible, you can’t take bits and pieces out of the bible and than leave other parts out just because you you don’t agree with it. If you don’t obey just one part of the word of God, you’re disobeying the entire word of God. There is no in between.

  17. See Joshua obeyed God’s words by gathering the people together reminding them of God’s laws, God knows how easily we forget his commands we were like the Israelites constantly needing to review what God says we cannot read the Bible as we do most of the books once through quickly we should read it daily as causing reminder of who God is

  18. Joshua 8:2 (NLT)
2 You will destroy them as you destroyed Jericho and its king. But this time you may keep the plunder and the livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the town.”

Once obedience was restored the plan for victory came. I believe that no matter how many people Joshua sent to Ai the first time he would have still suffered defeat. God knew how to destroy the enemy and gave Joshua the strategy he needed.

  19. Victory we have the victory, Mighty in battle over the enemy! We are conquerer mighty in battle, we have overcome! The devil is under our feet! All we need to do is follow Gods commandments and God will be right there for us, fighting our battles! Hallelujah!

  20. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

When you allow the Holy Ghost to burn out of you the thing that is holding you back from victory and allow praise and prayer to be lifted to heaven your enemies will realize they are defeated and flee

  21. The Message Version 8:3-8
Joshua chise30,000 men , tough, seasoned fighters and sent them off at night. With these orders Look sharp Get as close as you can. Stay alert. They went head on into the presence of the enemy with boldness. They had no outward fear. I believe it was because they had prepared theirselves before the battle. They had already done this before when they marched around the walls of Jerico they knew what they were up against and left all fear and intimidation behind. That is the only way they were able to run right into the face of the enemy they knew their God would hand it over to them. They went out of obedience to the orders God had given them.
Obedience and submission with unity brings power!

  22. 11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

The enemy is always looking for a chance to find us in a valley, or a low spot in our lives, where we become easy pickings. We have to remember that Jesus has our best interest in mind, and that most likely if the enemy is thinking that we are in the valley, it is so that Jesus can set us up for an overwhelming victory, where He alone will get the credit.

  23. 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

We cannot forget the altar unto God. It is where we offer our worship to God. Especially after a victory we should always go back and worship for it is God that gives us victory.

  24. 8: 1-29
With the sin purged Israel defeats Ai and this time the plunder is distributed to the Israelites. The king of Ai the last survivor of the city is executed . Jericho has demonstrated that obedience brings victory. Ai has shown that disobedience leads to defeat.

  25. “And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.” The word of God (Jesus) identified “liers in wait”. Many battles can be won, if one will learn to allow God time and wait, whereas the opposite is also true. Dear God, help us learn to wait until you say so, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  26. “And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.” They were in control and then they had no power. The only difference was their circumstance changed, as such their view did also. The circumstances of life can have a similar affect, which is all the more reason why the Lord must be the focal point. God help us learn to see situations and circumstances as you see them, in Jesus name.

  27. v1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai : see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

GOD NEVER FAILS TO KEEP HIS WORD TO US!
We see that GOD’S promises of abiding comfort and care in every situation.

  28. The Israelites Defeat Ai 1. Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Take all your fighting men and attack Ai, for I have given you the king of Ai, his people, his town, and his land. 2. You will destroy them as you destroyed Jericho and it’s king. But this time you may keep the plunder and the livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the town.” No weapon formed against me shall prosper in Jesus Name !!!!

  29. After the taking of Jericho and the Lord taking his part of the loot, He allows the Israelites to take the loot of the next city. God gave them the strategy and they prevailed. Sometimes, all we need to do is listen for the Lord’s instructions and follow them. Then, we will be in the position for victory.

  30. “Then you shall rise from the ambush and seize the city, for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.”(Joshua‬ ‭8:7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

Observe Joshua’s conduct and prudence. Those that would maintain their spiritual conflicts must not love their ease. Probably he went into the valley alone, to pray to God for a blessing, and he did not seek in vain. He never drew back till the work was done. Those that have stretched out their hands against their spiritual enemies, must never draw them back.

  31. 14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

This verse stood out to me in that with haste. The king sent out all the men of his kingdom after that Israelites. He left the city defenseless and God lead an army into the city. When I act with haste and not trust in God this is what happens. I leave myself defenseless and then wonder how things went wrong. I need to put my trust in God and not man. This is a daily struggle for me; I know that God will take care of my daily needs, but there is still that little bit of the world that calls out. Had Joshua not listened to God, they would have been completely destroyed and that is how I feel sometimes. That if I don’t have God in my life, I’m destroyed by the world. God is awesome……..Thank you Jesus…..Amen!!!!

  32. Moses, the man who speaks with God “face to face, as a man speaks with his friend” (Ex 33:11), is now gone. Moses, who lead the people of Israel from bondage to freedom, is no longer there to guide them. The people of God are facing an age old problem of moving from old leadership to Joshua the new. Anyone who wonders if Joshua will deviate from the direction set by God doesn’t have to wonder long. Joshua fulfills the detailed instructions Moses gave the Israelites for their entrance into the promised land (Deut 27:1-13): He builds an altar and gives sacrifices and copies the stones of the law of Moses; and before the people he reads the words of the law of Moses emphasizing both blessings and curses Ex 20:25. With these acts Joshua honors Moses’ direction and God’s authority as he leads the people.

  33. 1 God said to Joshua, “Don’t be timid and don’t so much as hesitate. Take all your soldiers with you and go back to Ai. I have turned the king of Ai over to you—his people, his city, and his land. (MSG)

  34. 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

The book of the law, is the Bible in these days, and Joshua was their leader, God chose Joshua because he was obedient and he stayed under Moses, he learned from Moses, so he brings them together in UNITY, and teaches them the Law in UNITY!
