Joshua 9

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

9 And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.

18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

  1. NLT. 16. Three days after making the treaty, they learned that these people actually lived nearby! 17. The Israelites set out at once to investigate and reached their towns in three days. The names of these towns were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath -jearim. 18. But the Israelites did not attack the towns, for the Israelite leaders had made a vow to them in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. HALLELUJAH !!!!

  2. 15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

They joined as one and became one…as neighbors like we are to other states.

  3. 14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

Do not let your eyes deceive you. Things are not always as they seem. Lean not on your own understanding!

  4. Verse 14 MSG “The men of Israel looked them over and accepted the evidence. But they didn’t ask God about it.” Same verse AMP “So the men [of Israel] took some of their own provisions [and offered them in friendship], and [foolishly] did not ask for the counsel of the Lord.” Do not be foolishly fooled; but, seek God in everything you do.

  5. Joshua 9:14, “And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.”

We can find ourselves in trouble for this very reason, we “asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.” We could save ourselves from alot of heartache and pain if we would learn to pray and seek the will of God before making decisions in our lives.

    Always PRAY First!

  6. 22. And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

    23. Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

    27. And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

Lying can get you and your people cursed for generations.

  7. DECEIVED BY A NEIGHBOR

GOD has BLESSED the New Testament church with the Holy Spirit to guide us. Being filled with the Holy Ghost gives us the SPIRIT of GOD our creator inside of us. This SPIRITUAL guide, directs us away from trouble and into the divine nature of GOD.

There are decisions in life however that we must PRAY over. Life in itself teaches us that everyone is not honest, everyone does not speak the truth and everyone is not as they profess to be.

Joshua was a good man, who made wise decisions and was well respected by all. However he made a poor choice and suffered the error of his decision to “not ask the LORD”.

We must be prayerful in EVERY decision.

The MSG version clearly identifies the grave mistake of Israel.

14 The men of Israel looked them over and accepted the evidence. But they didn’t ask God about it.

We must be PRAYERFUL in every situation and decision.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  8. 22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word

Joshua 9:18 NLT But the Israelites did not attack the towns, for the Israelite leaders had made a vow to them in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. The people of Israel grumbled against their leaders because of the treaty.

Leaders, the quickest way to get those under you grumbling and murmuring is to not have made good decisions. These bad decisions are usually formed because we do not consult with God first. Leaders must be prayed up and ready to follow the ways of the Lord and not lean on our own understanding.

  10. Joshua 9:19 (Message)
19 The leaders were united in their response to the congregation: “We promised them in the presence of the God of Israel. We can’t lay a hand on them now.

The story of the gibeonites and Joshua to me is about a choice of whose word is more important.

Gibeah seduced the Israelites through flattery. They signed a covenant with them but when they found out what they had done they convinced themselves it was too late and they couldn’t break their promise they made before God.

Yet God told them at the beginning to destroy all the inhabitants of the Land.

Joshua valued his own word over God’s. There is no action that we can take that will ever outweigh God’s command to us.

  11. 22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

Whose side are you on? Be careful who you side with and what part you have in deception. They were deceivers and they wanted the people of Israel to become heres of wood and drawers of water, but instead that is what Joshua made them do.

God always gets the last word. Those things that the enemy has meant for harm, God will turn it around for the good of His Kingdom.

  12. 14 So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord. (NLT)

This goes to show we must always consult the Lord first! If the Lord is not in it, then chances are unfortunate results will occur. Lord be at the center of our lives, of our church, of our every decision; let us always remember to consult You first when opportunities arise.

  13. 4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

For a people to so afraid of what God will do to them; that they made themselves look this way. Wow they cursed themselves by trying to trick Joshua into making him believe that they traveled a long way. The princes put themselves into bondage. That is not where I want to be. God knows when he is being tricked and when people are being sincere with Him.

Pro 24:1 Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
Pro 24:2 For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.
Pro 24:3 Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:

This stuck out as I was studying Joshua, evil men do evil things, but a righteous man will build a house with his wisdom and will have understanding in the word of God. That is my desire. To be the man with wisdom and understanding. Not to put myself in bondage trying to trick God. He is an awesome God……Thank you Jesus…..Amen!!!

  14. 19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

    A false peace.

Be careful to not allow your enemies persuade you to thinking that they are on your side. If the Lord says conquer then conquer.

  15. Joshua 9:7 The Israelites said to the Hivites but perhaps you lived near us so how can we make a treaty with you. We are your servants they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked who are you and where did you come from? They answered your servants have come from a every long distant country because of the fame of the Lord your God. For We Have Heard reports of him all he did in Egypt and all that he did to the two kings in Egypt, and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorires east of the Jordan Sihon King of Heshbon and Og King of Bashan who reigned in Ashtaroth. And our elders and all those living in our country said to us. Take Provisions for your journey go and neet them and say to them we are your servants make a treaty with us. This bread of ours was warm when we practice at home on the day we left to come to you. But see how dry and moldy it is. And these wineskins that we filled were new but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey. The Israelites simple the provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.

  16. 14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

Oh the things we would avoid if we just seek direction from the Lord first. It seems that proverbs 3 would fit perfectly for this scenario.

Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.

  17. 24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

As. I was reading this verse. I made me think about kind of about myself. But other to. But anyway there are some things in our life that block us from god. Got trying to get our attention. But we ignoring him i believe that there some things that we next to completely destroy Out of our life
And give god all. So if there is some thing in our lives that’s block us from god we need to completely destroy it because when it all comes down to the end of day nothing. Mean anything if we don’t have a relationship with GOD ALL THINGS WILL PASS but our relationship with God will endure forever

Thank u Jesus 4 ur mercy for you mercy is forever

  18. Joshua 9:14, “And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.”
It is important to remember that whatever we do in the kingdom we must keep God first and seek his counsel

  19. 19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

When you make a promise, you must keep your word, even if you gotta do something you don’t want to do. We need to be people after God’s own heart, and we do that when we keep our commitments and promises

  20. 2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

We need unity in our church and our homes. It is time to war in the spirit on our knees and allow God to move in a mighty way.

  21. 9-14
Don’t make the same mistake Israel did.

A person who gives his or her word is bound to keep it even when a promise is.made unwisely .l

  22. That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

We don’t just need unity in our church but we need unity in each other. We need to be prayer warriors with one another in the dark and low places and not bashing or talking behind their backs. We as a church must arise now and be in unity praying together and we must take the vision laid before Pastor Watts and allow our passion and desire for the things of God to grow. In order for their to be unity we must be willing to let some things go even when we don’t find it conveant to. If we continue to allow the enemy to have his way he will. But that moment that we tap into the supernatural realm and say enough is enough and fight the devil head on we will see the many things laid before us. It’s time to arise church. For though I walk thro ugh the valley of the shawdow of death I will fear no evil for i know the Lord Thu God is with me. Despite our problems God is with us. NOW is not the time to throw in the towel. Now is the time to fight for everything give it all we have. Don’t allow the enemy Rob the blessing God has for you because of your lack to be in unity.

  23. 22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose

Reading this reminds me we must be merciful to one another.

  24. 14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.
We need to always seek God’s counsel no matter how big or small we think the situation is. It’s not wise to trust our heart we make decisions at times that aren’t wise. We need to acknowledge God in everything we do!

  25. Jos 9:22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
Jos 9:23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

We’ve often been told how it doesn’t matter if it’s a small lie or a big lie, it’s a lie and a sin.
Psa 119:29 Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously

  26. 4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

Satan is crafty or wily and he can deceive mankind so easily unless we are spiritually minded. Satan makes things appear one way and often we take the bait. Pray and compare things in life with the word of God so we are not deceived.

  27. “And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?” The word of God (Jesus) identified their deceptive reasoning. They were fearful as such they did what they believed to be right, and/or what would benefit themselves. Dear God, help us learn to seek you in all matters, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  28. “And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.” They simply believed what their eyes saw as true. They would not have been deceived, if they had sought the Lord; for the Lord sees all things, including the heart. God help us avoid deception, in Jesus name.

  29. v14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not the counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

As believers we should seek continually to follow the direction of the Holy SPIRIT of GOD.

  30. 14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.

Often we see the obvious in the physical, but because of our lack of spiritual maturity, we miss the spiritual that Jesus is trying to show us. We must always pray about what His plan is..

  31. The words ” [They] did not inquire of the Lord.” vs 14 shows how the people of Gideon devised a strategy without including God. They know the Isreaites are on the move. They have heard the stories of waters parting, walls falling down and nations being driven out. They know their day is coming. The plan of the Gibeonite will never work if the people simply inquire of the Lord. But they don’t and fail to seek Gods face and take the bait of the Gibeonite hook, like and sinker. We can learn from this to lean on Gods wisdom and not our own understanding.

  32. They feared the Lord and ended up become servants to the people. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Many lack that fear today. May the fear of the Lord grow in this time so that people may serve God with reverence.

  33. 18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

  34. 14 The men of Israel looked them over and accepted the evidence. But they didn’t ask God about it.

How much heart could we have prevented if we would have just asked God or even our Pastor! Too many times we get caught up and rush through without seeking God’s will resulting in “sticky” situations.

    Slow Down. Ask God.

  35. 22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

How can you deceive the people of God and not think that your deeds won’t come to light??

  36. “And now, here we are, in your hands; do with us as it seems good and right to do to us.””(Joshua‬ ‭9:25‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

We are in thy hand, &c. — In thy power to use us as thou wilt. We refer ourselves to thee and thy own piety, probity, and faithfulness, to fulfil thy word and oath; if thou wilt destroy thy humble supplicants, we submit. Let us, in like manner, submit to our Lord Jesus, and refer ourselves to him, saying, We are in thy hand, do unto us as it seemeth right unto thee. Only save our souls: give us our lives for a prey, and let us serve thee just as thou wilt!

  37. 4 they resorted to deception to save themselves. They sent ambassadors to Joshua, loading their donkeys with weathered saddlebags and old, patched wineskins.

To save their own live, people back then were resorting to deception. You can say it worked, but now they have to pay the price of being servants/slaves to Israel. Is it worth deceiving someone for a gain? God will know your intentions, and he will be the judge of it.

  38. 18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

If you make an oath (promise, vow, commitment, pledge) before the Lord, KEEP IT!
