Joshua 14

1 And these are the countries which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.

2 By lot was their inheritance, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.

3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half tribe on the other side Jordan: but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them.

4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.

5 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.

6 Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the Lord said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea.

7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.

8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

10 And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.

14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

15 And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

  1. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

We must be strong in the things of the Lord at all times.

  2. 12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

Put up your wall for Jesus, and He shall protect You,

  3. 12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

  4. In reading this chapter, it spoke to me about standing on your promises. A portion of verses 6-12 MSG says “……but I stuck to my guns, totally with God, my God. That was the day that Moses solemnly promised, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance, you and your children’s, forever. Yes, you have lived totally for God.’……”. Caleb was remembering his promise and now it was time to claim it, as verse 12 NLT says “So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the Lord said.” This reminds me of what Pastor has said “But if the Lord”……remember His are bigger!

  5. 12. Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

Don’t let anyone talk you out of what God has promised you, even if giants are in the way. If He promised it, He will be with you to help you claim it.

    I’m claiming my promise
    God has promised to me
    I’m standing my ground
    His Word I believe
    The devil can’t stop it
    Blessings on the way
    I’m claiming my promise today

  6. 12 So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the Lord said.” (NLT)

“But if the Lord is with me,” whom shall I fear?!

  7. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

We can be strong in the Lord no matter what we are facing.

1Cor 4:10 We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.

  8. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

Awesome, he was old and still strong, he loved God and obedient in what he did for God, and God blessed him, now he wants his mountain, he was ready to fight for it, I believe Joshua was happy to give him his inheritance, and God was well pleased! Our God is truly an awesome God!

  9. 8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.
9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

This once again plays out perfectly with what is happening in our church right now. Keep HIS statutes, hold on to HIS promises. HE has promised an inheritance for those faithful to the cause.

  10. 12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

Wholly follow God and you will wholly live in victory

  11. NEVER GIVE UP ON THE PROMISES OF GOD

45 years later and Caleb is still claiming his promise from GOD. What has GOD promised you that it seems like you may never see it happen?

We must commit to wholly follow the LORD; through the wilderness, the desert, the famine, the battle, the complainers, the naysayers and all that comes along with it.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  12. 12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

There is a mountain to be claimed!
There is work still left to be done!
There are opportunities yet to be taken!

    Let’s claim it today!

  13. Joshua 14:6 Now the people of Judah approached Joseph at Gilgal and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzites said to him. You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. I was 40 years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea
to explore the land. And I brought him back to a report according to my convictions but my fellow Israelites who went up with me make the hearts of the people melt in fear. I however followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. So on that day Moses swore to me the land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. Now then just as the Lord promised he has kept me alive for 45 years since the time he said this to Moses whIle Israel mived about in the wilderness. So here I am today 85 years old and I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out. I am just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourselves heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and forfeited, but the Lord helping me I will drive them out just as he said.

  14. 9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[a]

Amen!!! The land that I step in will be mine and my children FOREVER!!! because I have followed God wholeheartedly….HALLELUJAH!!!

wholeheartedly-Marked by unconditional commitment, unstinting devotion, or unreserved enthusiasm:
This reminds me of Pastors preaching on Wednesday. Right now is no the time to relax bu time to be more committed than yesterday, committed to pray more, fast, read, grow the kingdom. If we don’t sacrifice we are just content with what we have. You have to fight for the dreams and visions the Lord has given you. This is not only for you but for you children its a PROMISE!!!! I used to have fear hat my children would grow up and go into the world but I know that if I follow the Lord, my children will also!!! AMEN!!!! No doubt about it!!! My God don’t lie….

  15. Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.
Caleb had made a commitment to God and 40 yes later he was still holding on to that commitment. While others spoke doubt and defeat Caleb spoke victory While others spoke of the trials and tribulations Caleb spoke of the victory While others Cause the Heart of the people to melt Caleb continued to speak victory. he is a beautiful example of how the people of God should be. we must keep our commitments and be faithful to what god has called us to do and know that if we are we will receive our promise.

  16. 8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.
9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

Caleb declared his faithfulness in following the Lord God with his whole heart and reminded Joshua of the promise he received of Moses. Many of us have promises from God that are before us. We must continue to follow God and serve him with gladness and we will receive all he has spoken into our lives! Praise him in advance for his truth endures forever!

  17. All of God’s promises are positive and sure, and the glory of God shines forever.

v12 ” Now therefore give me this mountain,”

  18. Joshua 14:10-11 (NLT)
    10) “Now, as you can see, the LORD has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise – even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old.
    11) I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then.

Caleb had a Positive Attitude. He was 85 and still strong and fighting.
We have to have a Positive Attitude too. We must be strong in the LORD and in the power of his might. We must keep fighting the good fight of faith.

  19. 12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

I heard a teaching on Caleb here recently. He got his mountain. But that’s all he got. He did get more land because he stopped and got complacent. Don’t get comfortable with where you’re at. Stay focused and press on.

  20. iLove to Grow in the Word

“So give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said.””
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭14:12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

If the man of God makes us a promise in he name of the Lord, it’s up to us to receive that promise and fight the forces of the enemy until we get it. We have to let the excuses go out the window, and even if we’re 85 years old go out and get what belongs to us

  21. 8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

This should be one of our main goals in walking with God, to wholly follow him, to keep his commandments and to have a hunger for God to wait to know him and what to do the things he wants for us to do, including reaching souls for his kingdom

  22. 10 And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

    The lord is our strength

  23. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.

  24. “So that day Moses solemnly promised me, ‘The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the LORD my God.’”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭14:9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When you choose to follow God there as some things you will have to give up, but if you wholeheartedly give your all to him he will bless you with more than you ever had!

  25. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

What a providing God we serve!

  26. Joshua 14:13-14 (NLT)
13 So Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave Hebron to him as his portion of land. 14 Hebron still belongs to the descendants of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite because he wholeheartedly followed the Lord, the God of Israel.

Our decision to follow God affects not just us. It affects our family and our future generations. Because Caleb wholeheartedly followed the Lord he set his children up for success. They were allowed to have the hill country that he fought for for generations after. We never know just how big of an impact we can have by following the Lord.

  27. When we think of the concept of drawing lots, we perhaps picture children pulling pieces of paper out of a hat to see who gets chosen. Here their is a great deal more going on. Their is division among the land among the people of Isreal directing them in the way of their inheritance. Drawing lots may seem a random way of dividing up the land. It takes away from from tribes fighting amongst themselves over which tribes gets which portion of land. It also puts God in charge of the process and their is not political or human manipulation involved. He is putting a blessing in their hands to own and care for. This land will be a possession to them. Like all blessings it is conditional they will have to fight for it and fight to keep it.

  28. “Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.” The word of God (Jesus) states until this day. Caleb did what was right in God’s (Judge) sight, which we can see how it blessed him and his generations to follow. Dear God, help us see and comprehend, so that our ways please you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  29. “Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the Lord will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the Lord said.” The key here is, if the Lord is in it. We are also capable of mighty things, if the Lord is in it. However the opposite is also true. God help us to; seek you, trust you, and put you first in all things, in Jesus name.

  30. 13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.

14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.

Imagine if God was unpatient as we humans tend to be..? What if all we got was one chance to get it right and go to heaven. Or simply he would just come back already and not give the opportunity for the world to hear the message of salvation. However, love is patient. And in his patient love, the Lord knows when we get a promise and the right time for it. Dont give up on a promise if it delays. God is faithful and he remembers and will fulfill his words.

  31. Caleb now receives the land promised to him by God and Moses. Sometimes it may take years for us to get the promise. We must not give and and continue to follow after God’s will.

  32. 9 And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.

  33. 11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in.

  34. 8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

  35. “A delegation from the tribe of Judah, led by Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb said to Joshua, “Remember what the LORD said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh-barnea. I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the LORD, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land of Canaan. I returned and gave an honest report, but my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the LORD my God. So that day Moses solemnly promised me, ‘The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the LORD my God.’”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭14:6-9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

  36. “So Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’”(Joshua‬ ‭14:9‬ ‭NKJV )

Caleb’s request is, Give me this mountain, or Hebron, because it was formerly in God’s promise to him, and he would let Israel knows how much he valued the promise. Those who live by faith value that which is given by God’s promise, far above what is given by his providence only.

  37. 10“Now, as you can see, the LORD has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise—even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old.

Caleb heard from the man of God, Moses, through God. He would receive his land as promised. We too should listen to the man of God.

  38. “Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭14:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

People often talk about the heart melting today as a good thing. In this passage it’s not so good. The heart melting is what made the people not get their promise. Instead of walking in victory they had to wonder longer only for people to die and then see the greater victory when God worked through greater adversity for the new victory.
