Joshua 22

1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

2 And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:

3 Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the Lord your God.

4 And now the Lord your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side Jordan.

5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.

7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given possession in Bashan: but unto the other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,

8 And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

9 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

10 And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

11 And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.

12 And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.

13 And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

14 And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.

15 And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

16 Thus saith the whole congregation of the Lord, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the Lord?

17 Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord,

18 But that ye must turn away this day from following the Lord? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the Lord, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.

19 Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the Lord, wherein the Lord’s tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the Lord, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the Lord our God.

20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

22 The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the Lord, (save us not this day,)

23 That we have built us an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the Lord himself require it;

24 And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the Lord God of Israel?

25 For the Lord hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the Lord: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the Lord.

26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:

27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord.

28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.

29 God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn this day from following the Lord, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the Lord our God that is before his tabernacle.

30 And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.

31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the Lord: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord.

32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the Lord is God.

  1. 4 And now the Lord your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side Jordan.

5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

  2. 5 But be very careful to obey all the commands and the instructions that Moses gave to you. Love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, obey his commands, hold firmly to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.” (NLT)

Once they had their promise there was only one stipulation left and that’s to continue obeying all the Lord’s commands. Once you achieve your goal, once the Lord has fulfilled His promise, we must always remember it was God who blessed us and He will always be worthy of our praise and obedience.

  3. 5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul
Joshua did great in leading the people of God in the paths of righteousness and in obeying the words of Moses. In everything he did he led them according to God and Moses’s words. As a result everyone received their inheritance and their blessing.

  4. 34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the Lord is God.

My God is so awesome. He knows my every need. He knows my name. He is my God who I serve. He is my all my everything. His name is Jesus.

  5. iLove to Grow in the Word

32Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the other leaders left the tribes of Reuben and Gad in Gilead and returned to the land of Canaan to tell the Israelites what had happened. 33And all the Israelites were satisfied and praised God and spoke no more of war against Reuben and Gad.

Wow, things almost got ugly in a hurry. It’s always a good thing to ask questions before waging war against our brothers and sisters. How many simple fires in the church could be put out easily with a little communication.

  6. ACCOUNTABILITY RESOLVES MISUNDERSTANDINGS

What appeared to be idolatry brought the priest and leaders to the doorstep of potential offense. The children of Israel suspected that the tribes or families of Reuben, Gad and Manessah to be drifting in the wrong direction toward idolatry, they did not just turn their head and hope for the best. The Elders addressed the concern. They asked for accountability for the protection of the rest of Israel, citing the death of Achan as their fear. There are 2 major Leadership principals in this chapter that will assist us to GROW at The POFW.

    1. Misunderstandings can be costly. It would have been tragic for the surprise attack on the hunch of transgression. Leaders should take a wise approach to the potential err in idolatry.

    2. Accountability cleared up all confusion and misunderstanding. We should make ourselves available for accountability and be approachable even if we are in not in error. Accountability protects us from drifting away from the LORD.

iPray JESUS help us as Leaders to approach and be approached in the LORD for the purpose of positioning ourselves to MORE evviciantly and effectively GROW the church.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray

  7. We have worked hard. We have labored for our new church out of the love of God. The finish line is within reach. Just like these three tribes it came together to work. We cannot give up yet, the finish line is too close. Reward is waiting for us just around the corner.

  8. 26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:

27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord.

The importance of building an altar within the walls of your home are so important, so that your children come to know and build relationship with the Lord, and provide them a legacy to pass on to their children.

  9. 5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

  10. 34The people of Reuben and Gad named the altar “Witness,”c for they said, “It is a witness between us and them that the LORD is our God, too.”

We too should be prepared to be a witness to others when the time comes. Let others see that you are holy and they will ask you ‘”what do you have that I don’t “

  11. Joshua 22:5 (NLT)
“But be very careful to obey all the commands and instructions that Moses gave you. Love the LORD your God, walk in all his ways, obey his commands, hold firmly to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul ”

This is good advice for all of us !

  12. And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:

When we obay God and the voice god he have to blessed us

  13. Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:

27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord.

The new birth experience is a memorial among God’s people today that they are of Him. Though there may be born again Christians spread across the globe through many languages and ethnicities, that does not mean that one has claim as “the church” over another. The individual born again in Asia in an underground church is just as much born again as the individual from Africa during a tent revival, just as much as the individual from North America during a church service, just as much as the individual from Europe, South America, the Middle East, Australia or the Pacific Islands. We are joined together by God’s acceptance of us by His blood and the infilling of His Spirit, whereby we are born again into His family. Being in THE church does not necessarily mean a particular style as long as it is holy, pleasing to God. Our acknowledgement and acceptance of each other is based in God, not in man, just as the three tribe set up their altar as memorial and called it Ed as “a witness between us that the Lord is God.”

  14. 22:10-11
    The altar
Mosaic Law said sacrifices be made only at the alter of Israel’s central sanctuary which at.the.time stood in the tabernacle court . Building.other altar of the unique design that God require for altars of sacrifice seemed an act of open defiance of the divine Law. The fact that the tribes west of.the.Jordan were willing to go to war over.this.issue shows.how dedicated the people were at that time to obeying.God completely.

  15. 5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

This is something that is mentioned often in scripture, to serve Jesus with all our hearts. But I believe it is often overlooked as well. Let’s keep this fresh in our memory every day, always look for ways in your life that you can improve to serve God and serve in the ministry

  16. But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

  17. 11 And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.

  18. 11 And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.

The children of Israel saw an alter built and came to the conclusion that the tribes had turned from God. They confronted them and chastised the tribes for building such a great alter. I have jumped to conclusions about things that people in my life had done or said. I now know that I need to get all the facts before confronting someone. That is what the children of Israel failed to do and drew on what they saw. Instead of finding out what the tribes were doing, they gathered and were going to war with the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions from what we (I) see, get the facts…..God is awesome……..Thank you Jesus……Amen!!!

  19. 5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
We can’t just do what we want, or come and go as we please. There are laws that we must follow in the sprit world and physical if not there will always be consequences either Good or Bad. I want to sow good seed so I can reap good seed. God always is accountable to his word therefore we should be accountable in everything we do.

  20. 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

34 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the Lord is God.

Missunderstanding can cause a whole deal of trouble. Comunnication is key to bring harmony to any relationship and have unity. How can two walk together unless they agree…but how can they agree if one does not communicate with the other.

  21. “Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the Lord your God.” The word of God (Jesus) identified they did as they said they would (they kept their word). Although there may have been times they thought otherwise, they stayed the course; as they thought more of what could happen, if they did not. Dear God, let us recognize as they did that there is a blessing when it is done unto you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  22. “But that ye must turn away this day from following the Lord? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the Lord, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel.” They had already experienced what the Lord could do, and did not want too again. We should recognize what is happening today and pray; for what is done or not done today, will affect our children and their children tomorrow. God help us to see the consequences of our actions and also the lack thereof, in Jesus name.

  23. God alone is God. Today there are many gods but there is only one God who is God alone. May America and this world cast aside their idols and embrace the one true God.

  24. God alone is God.
We need to take the time to build our own altars. There are many things that try to come into our lives as distractions. Hold onto what you know is true.

  25. 8 And he spake unto them, saying, Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.

This is what we will witness from amongst the brethren at our church that faithfully attend outreach, we will start reaping from the enemies spoils. We will be stealing the spoils from the enemy.

  26. Verses 7-8 MSG “When Joshua sent them off to their homes, he blessed them. He said: “Go home. You’re going home rich—great herds of cattle, silver and gold, bronze and iron, huge piles of clothing. Share the wealth with your friends and families—all this plunder from your enemies!” It is now time to share the wealth of who we know………Jesus!

  27. In this delegation were ten leaders of Israel, one from each of the ten tribes, and each the head of his family within the clans of Israel. When they arrived in the land of Gilead, they said to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, “The whole community of the Lord demands to know why you are betraying the God of Israel. How could you turn away from the Lord and build an altar for yourselves in rebellion against him?
    Joshua 22:14-16 NLT
    http://bible.com/116/jos.22.14-16.NLT

We all need someone to make us accountable for the things we do. We need that leader not only to encourage us but also to give us a kick in the pants when we are going the wrong way or doing wrong. Which is why I’m thankfull for the leadership at POFW because accountability starts at the top.

  28. 28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us

The tribes across the Jordan created a memorial or a landmark declaring they are part of this Gtreat nation. They didn’t want to be cut off from their brethren in the future. They wanted future generations to see the pattern of the altar was just like the pattern of the altar at Shiloh, proving they were connected and related.

  29. 5. But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Mo’-ses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
