Joshua 24

1 And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

2 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.

3 And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

4 And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

5 I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.

6 And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.

7 And when they cried unto the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.

8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:

10 But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.

11 And you went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.

12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;

17 For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:

18 And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord; for he is our God.

19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the Lord: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.

20 If ye forsake the Lord, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

21 And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the Lord.

22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the Lord, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.

23 Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel.

24 And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.

25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the Lord.

27 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

28 So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.

29 And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathserah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.

31 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord, that he had done for Israel.

32 And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.

33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.

  1. In verse 14-16 where it says…
    14. Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.
I choose to serve the Lord.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
I don’t want to be put thrugh darkness again, God delievered me from evil and therefore I choose to serve Him.

    16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;

Also in verse 19 and 20.

Please Lord don’t let me forsake you in any way, show me the way. I love you and I am proud of myself and how I am turning out to be a vessel for you.

  2. 13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

  3. Verse 27 NLT “Joshua said to all the people, “This stone has heard everything the Lord said to us. It will be a witness to testify against you if you go back on your word to God.” Same verse NIV “See!” he said to all the people. “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.” Sometimes things may come about/against you (at least that’s what we think), just to see what our reaction will be and how we handle it (Will we still stay true to what we said/our word?). JESUS today YOU will SAVE me.

  4. 13. I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build-the towns where you are now living. I gave you vineyards and olive groves for food, though you did not plant them.

    14. So fear the LORD and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD alone. NLT

Idols and gods could not give us the victories we have experienced, nor the territory we are taking possession of – God alone has the power, and deserves the praise and glory.

  5. Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods; For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: (‭Joshua‬ ‭24‬:‭14-17‬ KJV)
‘Serve Him in sincerity and in truth’

  6. “Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭24:14-15‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We always have a choice who we will serve. But once our decision has been made we need to serve with our whole heart and destroy the idols in our life.

  7. Joshua 24:17, “For it is the LORD our God who has taken us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the prison-house, and who did all those great signs before our eyes, and kept us safe on all our journeys, and among all the peoples through whom we went.” (NLT)

“For It Is The LORD Our God Who Has… !!
For it is the LORD our God who has… Taken us out of this world of sin. He has called us out of darkness into His marvellous light. (1Peter 2:9)
For it is the LORD our God who has… Brought us (the prisoner) out of the prison. (Isaiah 42:7)
For it is the LORD our God who has.. Done great wonders and declared His strength among the people. (Psalms 77:14)
For it is the LORD our God who has… Kept us safe on all our journeys. He has preserved our going out and our coming in, from this time forth, and even for evermore. (Psalms 121:8)

For It Is The LORD our God Who Has !! He Is Our God !!
There’s No God Like Our God!

  8. 13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat. 14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

We are a blessed people. Much like these children of God, we too have been given land, cities and fruit which we did not plant. Elders that have gone to their reward have tilled the ground, built the cities and planted the seeds which are now ripe for us to harvest. The efforts of building and moving are ramping up and will be at a fury pace this week and into next week. However the “real” work will start then; the work of maintaining the harvest.

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

    16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;

This verse is a very popular one that many people know. This verse was spoken by Joshua on his deathbed. He stayed faithful until the end. He could say with confidence that he and his house would serve the Lord.

We as well outta be able to say with confidence that our families are going to serve the Lord

  10. WHEN JESUS BECOMES MY GOD

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
    16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;

The concept of the “Trinity” has sown more confusion in the christian world than any other heresy out of Rome. Understanding that GOD is ONE is by far the greatest revelation of the Kingdom. This revelation brings into focus our prayers, praise and our worship. The LORD GOD of the Old Testament (Covenant) is The JESUS of the New Testament (Covenant). When we speak of the LORD GOD whether Old or New Testament we speak of JESUS.

John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

1Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

By choosing JESUS as my GOD. I have engaged the fullness of TRUTH, HOPE, LOVE and LIFE.

Joshua called a Leadership Meeting and asked for a covenant from the people of who they were going to follow. The people responded by committing to follow the LORD, for HE is OUR GOD.

When we make choices, commitments, and covenants to the LORD, we establishing our future with GOD. Joshua said, “Choose you this day”, indicating that there is an initial day of choice, however the people responded with the attitude that following GOD (JESUS) is also a daily choice.

Luke 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?
13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

    JESUS is My GOD!

  11. 14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

  12. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

    Choose!

Are you with us or against us? My house will serve the Lord.

  13. 14 “So now: Fear God. Worship him in total commitment. Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshiped on the far side of The River (the Euphrates) and in Egypt. You, worship God. (MSG)

We have a choice; to fear God and worship Him in TOTAL COMMITTMENT, or we can choose to allow other idols to gain more attention in our lives and worship it. Joshua warns the people after they make their decision of how God is a just God, no matter the greatness you achieve if we allow sin to penetrate our lives, He will hate its appearance. Joshua says it like this in the Message Version, (Vs. 19-20) “He won’t put up with your fooling around and sinning. When you leave God and take up the worship of foreign gods, he’ll turn right around and come down on you hard.” I personally liked the way the people responded to Joshua:

17-18 “God is our God! He brought up our ancestors from Egypt and from slave conditions. He did all those great signs while we watched. He has kept his eye on us all along the roads we’ve traveled and among the nations we’ve passed through. Just for us he drove out all the nations, Amorites and all, who lived in the land. “Count us in: We too are going to worship God. He’s our God.” (MSG)

Count me in! God is MY GOD!!

  14. 22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the Lord, to serve him.

We ” Joseph and Nora ” has made a choice who we will serve this day and forevermore, as for Me and My house we will serve The Lord!

  15. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

    16 And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;

17 For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:

I know that as long as I serve the Lord and keep His commandments; all will be fine. There is none before Him and there will be none after. God is so awesome, as we get ready to possess the land. God is already opening the doors around the new building. I love this chapter, it defines all that POFW has labored for. Now is the time for the harvest. Our fore fathers have sown the seed and given us the right time to bring forth God’s children. I love and thank you Jesus for all that you have given to us, blessed us with……..Thank you Jesus……Amen!!!!

  16. 8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

Just like pastor spoke about last night. The Pentecostals have been on one side of the Jordan and we have fought to possess this land and now we are moving across. God has sent the hornet before us. There will be battles but greater is in us than he that is in this world, God will deliver them into our hands. God has given us things we didn’t work for, yes we have worked but there are somethings that others worked for that we are reaping the benefit of. God has done so much for us, now we should continue to serve him in sincerity and truth fearing the lord.

  17. 14“Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” NIV

What is coming between you and your service to the LORD? What gods are your friends and loved ones worshipping that seems so desirable? Where will that lead you if you follow in their worship? Joshua carries on to make sure the Israelites understand completely that they are to worship the LORD our GOD and what it means if they choose to worship false gods. GOD has been good to them and will bring about destruction if they choose to be unfaithful. But to serve the LORD in your house…who would want to miss out on that? It is a struggle to raise children to serve the LORD when ALL of the rest of their family worships idols. But our GOD is greater.

  18. 13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.
God bless Joshua and the people of Israel with blessings that they did not labor for they were able to reap where they did not sow And eat things that they did not plant. God’s hand and blessing was over them in every way. All got asked was one thing that they would fear Him and be faithful to him and not turn their backs on him And serve the idols of their past. In the same sense today God blesses his people more than we could ever deserve and all God asked of us is that we do not forget him that we serve him with her whole heart soul mind and strength and that would do not allow anything in this world to turn us away from him. Thank you Jesus! I chose to serve the Lord!

  19. 14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  20. For the Lord our God is the one who rescued us and our ancestors from slavery in the land of Egypt. He performed mighty miracles before our very eyes. As we traveled through the wilderness among our enemies, he preserved us. It was the Lord who drove out the Amorites and the other nations living here in the land. So we, too, will serve the Lord , for he alone is our God.”
    Joshua 24:17-18 NLT
    http://bible.com/116/jos.24.17-18.NLT

We can all apply these verse to our lives because we were once lost and enslaved in our own sin. We had lost hope and had accepted every word that the enemy told us, “BUT” God performed a miracle before our own eyes. He set us free, gave us hope and washed our sins away. We must never forget that and always serve Him alone.

  21. Jos 24:25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

We have all made a covenant with God, but how are we going to remember it? Memory is not our strongest skill. So how, how will we remember the covenant, the promises, and the vows we make with God?

The children set a statute to remember.

  22. 31 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord, that he had done for Israel.

Those who lived first during the siege for their promised land served the Lord God. Their job is to teach their children diligently so that the next generation continues to serve Him and to know his ways. These children must watch their parents live for God and be protected from idolatry. People have their own choices, but as children, they should watch their parents role model the correct way to live. Same today. What do we allow our children to see and hear at home?

  23. 14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

  24. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord

In the darkness and in with distractions all around will you still serve the Lord? My mind is made up and my heart is fixed I will live for God

“But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!”
    ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

  25. 14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Which god will u chose today the almighty. Or the thing that we put before him

  26. 16 The people replied, “We would never abandon the LORD and serve other gods.

We may hear this all the time, but people will grow weary with God, and start serving another god, or worship and idol. We have to stay focused on God all the times. We have to pray, praise and worship God forever.

  27. 27 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

When you first look at this verse from a logical standpoint, it makes no sense. Why? Because how can a rock be a witness for the people about their covenant to God? It can’t hear, it can’t see, it can’t feel. It can’t do anything to affirm this promise… right?

Well it turns out, it can. There has been research that has gone on about “Archaeoacoustics”. Which is the study of revealing or finding sound through rocks. Though research isn’t complete on it, but it has been rocks may have the ability to “record” sound and store it, like a memory.

So what’s the point here? Statements in the bible are being proven by science today. And also, don’t question the methods God may have in your life no matter how crazy it sounds or how little sense it makes. Because you don’t know what God may be doing behind the scenes or how he makes things work in your life!

  28. Joshua 24:22-23 (Message)
22 And so Joshua addressed the people: “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen God for yourselves—to worship him.”
And they said, “We are witnesses.”
23 Joshua said, “Now get rid of all the foreign gods you have with you. Say an unqualified Yes to God, the God of Israel.”

    Prove it

It takes more than just saying you are going to turn from the world and live for God not here has to be action. As it says in Roman’s come out from among them and be separate says the Lord and touch not the unclean thing and I will receive you.

This means that it will be a matter of action and not spectating. God wants to see if we are serious about him because he is serious about us.

  29. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Once again confirming to the people where he stands, Joshua kept faithful to the Lord till the end. May we pray to endure and not let anything pull us away from serving the Lord till the end.

  30. We must serve the Lord with all our heart. We must not allow the enemy to sway us from the plan God has set for us. Let us hold on to every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God.

  31. 3 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.
Give me Jesus, I’m not going to fall in love with this world. I’m going to serve God with my whole heart. I’m going to keep his commandments and he will bless me and fight my battles!

  32. 14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.

  33. “For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭24:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  34. 14. Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in E’-gypt; and serve ye the LORD. Holy, Holy, Holy, LORD God almighty !!

  35. “And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.” The word of God (Jesus) stated, he (God) did it. One should never forget God (Creator) has done it before and can most assuredly do it again. Therefore one should strive to please him (God), and remember he (Judge) knows all and hears all. Dear God, help us examine self, as we are the ones that need you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  36. “And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the Lord.” The people had chosen themselves that they would serve the Lord, which is what is still required today. Relationships with people and the Lord are not the same; respect and love should be among the Lord’s people, whereas worship from the heart must be willingly given unto the Lord. God let us be mindful that we will reap what we sow, and let us worship you with sincere hearts, in Jesus name.

  37. 6 And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.
