Judges 8

8 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

2 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

7 And Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

17 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

19 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.

22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.

24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

Don’t let other idols come before the Lord, don’t accept evil he will punish you for it.

  2. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

  3. We might think that It is so unbelievable that the children of Israel would so quickly forget the Lord their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies and would fall once again into sin worshiping other gods. Let us not forget what the Lord has brought us through and remember that He rules over us. JESUS today YOU will SAVE us.

  4. When the voice goes quiet!

This is the big difference between religion and a relationship. There is a believer that puts all his trust in the leaders of their church and then when that leader, that voice of guidance it’s gone everyone falls apart and leaves the church. Then, oh have the believer that has a relationship with God, spends their time learning His word, praying, seeking to be closer to God, these never leave, they serve with a smile and love being surrounded by His love. It seems like once that voice of conscience was gone the children of God just left, seems like they put their faith on the man not on God. Lord help us to put our all in you and for you. Help us always respect and pray for our Pastor and his family but keep going clear that we MUST put ALL our Faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ and no one else. In Jesus Name Amen

2But Gideon replied, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t even the leftover grapes of Ephraim’s harvest better than the entire crop of my little clan of Abiezer? 3God gave you victory over Oreb and Zeeb, the commanders of the Midianite army. What have I accomplished compared to that?” When the men of Ephraim heard Gideon’s answer, their anger subsided.

The voice of humility and wisdom defused the conflict. I wonder how many conflicts could be avoided with the attitude this.

  6. 34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

LORD, even as we war against the kings of this land, and as they are continually delivered into our hands, may we never forget what you have done. May we never turn our faces from you. In JESUS name. Amen

  7. 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

God will bless those that bless is people, but curse those who curse his people.

  8. 27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. KJV

27 Gideon made the gold into a sacred ephod and put it on display in his hometown, Ophrah. All Israel prostituted itself there. Gideon and his family, too, were seduced by it. MSG

How can such a might man of God forget and/or become seduced by an ornament after being used by God in such a mighty way? If it can happen to Gideon, it can happen to anyone. I have not done the smallest thing for God in comparison to Gideon. Yet, my feeble mind believes I would never fall into such a trap as this. Let’s keep our guard up against this spirit as our new building could become a sacred ephod rather than the house of God it is intended to be.

  9. DONT STOP PURSUIT EVEN IF YOU ARE TIRED

4 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

GOD is an endless deity, we must learn and understand his seasons and not grow weary in well doing. The army that GOD selected for Gideon was faint from the journey as well as the battle, however they continued their pursuit.

The POFW has been in heavy pursuit of the LORD and we have crossed over to the new area, now it is time to continue pursuing the LORD. Faint we may be, bit we are not fallen, weary we may be, but we are not weak, tired we may be, but we will tarry.

Whatever promise you are seeking, whatever promise you are holding to, no matter how faint you may be, continue pursuing your promises.

  10. 34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

  11. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

Never forget who has brought you out! It is easy to get caught up in life and how far we’ve come from who we use to be that we forget who actually brought us there. Once rhe children of Israel lost their Godly influence they forgot everything God had done. Yes, it is very important to have a man of God and to listen to his instruction but we must be carful that we do not depend on that man of God for our own relationship with God!!

  12. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side
After all that God had done for his people and all the kindness shown to them. They decided to go back a whoring after idols! what could have possessed them to go back to the same items that Gideon and his army defeated and slew?! We must be sure to remember our God and what he has done for us and never to turn back to the idols of this world. God has done too much for us to turn back now he has been too good to us to know where should the idols of the world. the Bible says love not the world neither the things that are in the world!

  13. 34 They forgot the Lord their God, who had rescued them from all their enemies surrounding them. (NLT)

It’s important we always remember the Lord and all He has done for us. He alone is worthy of our praise because He is good, all the time, regardless of our circumstances. Reminds me of a song that used to say, “Jesus I’ll never forget what You’ve done for me. Jesus I’ll never forget how You set me free. Jesus I’ll never forget how You brought me out. Jesus I’ll never forget, no never.”

  14. 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

  15. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

  16. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

How can the children of Israel turn from the one true God. He has a calling on each of us; how can I accept the calling of our Lord if I continually turn from Him. They were crazy to accept any other god before our Lord and savoir. God will always be there; He may require trials as a test of my faith, but I am the one that has to accept the truth about what He is doing in my life. With the new HOUSE OF GOD in our hands, unity has to be in the church as well as my home. God is awesome……….Have a blessed day………Amen!!!

  17. Judges 8:34, “And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side ”

Ps. 107-1-2, “O GIVE thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy.”

I Give Thanks unto you, JESUS, for You are Good, and Your Mercy endureth forever. Thank You JESUS for delivering/redeeming me out of the hand of the enemy and for All You have done for me !

  18. 28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

When we follow God there is peace. Let there be peace in our homes.

  19. 1 Then the people of Ephraim asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us this way? Why didn’t you send for us when you first went out to fight the Midianites?” And they argued heatedly with Gideon.

This sounds like a person who looks after only himself. A person who wants attention, and wants all the credit. He argues points until he gets it his way. He doesn’t want anyone else to receive credit, but when something goes wrong, he is quick to point the fault to someone else.

  20. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
The children of Isreal forgot where God has brought them from they turn away from serving the one true God and started serving a false god. God don’t ever let is forget where you brought us from! You are the one and only God my family and I will serve.

  21. 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.

24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

  22. 32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

We can’t forget where God has brought us..

  23. Judges 8:33 (Literal Translation of the Holy Bible – LITV)
33 And it happened, when Gideon was dead, the sons of Israel rebelled and went whoring after the Baals, and appointed Baal-berith for a god for themselves.

Matthew 5:15 (Literal Translation of the Holy Bible – LITV)
15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under the grain measure, but on the lampstand; and it shines for all those in the house.

How can you forget what God has done? How do you raise a generation that doesn’t hold on to the word of God, and his ways?

I believe at some point they hid their light. They stopped telling of the good things of God, and they made the things Of God common. When we hide our light, and reduce the Lord and the things of God to a common place we hide him from those around us and even the generations to come.

We may have it good but it’s up to us to make sure that society and our children know God.

Go tell it on the mountain…

  24. 28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

This reminded me of a proverb

When a man’s ways please the Lord , He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
    Proverbs 16:7 MEV
    http://bible.com/1171/pro.16.7.MEV

  25. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

The man of God is just a vessel from the Lord. It’s important we don’t always depend on him. Everything in this Earth is temporary, including our relationships. We must stand our ground with Jesus through prayer and practicing His word.

  26. Gideon wisely gave credit to those who demanded it . Let your deeds speak for themselves and let others praise themselves all they wish .
When God is at work not to join in is the same as supporting the other side .

  27. Gideon wisely gave credit to those who demanded it . Let your deeds speak for themselves and let others praise themselves all they wish .

  28. After the Midianite war, the people give a share of their plunder to Gideon: one gold earring each. Gideon takes the gold and forms it into an ephod, an article of clothing with worshipping God (Ex 28:6). Unfortunately, Gideons ephod has no such purpose. Soon after he makes it the Isrealites begin to worship it. Sounds familiar to the golden calf in Aaron’s day. So quickly they forget their miraculous deliverance from the Midianites, so quickly they turn from God to go their own way -a story repeated time after time OT, NT and today. God forgives, and God delivers. We’re thankful and close to him for a time, then forget and go our own way -a cycle God will continue to let us repeat until it’s broken.

  29. 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.

  30. 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.

I wonder how many people in this day and time will allow God to rule in their lives. To many times we try to do things our way and end up in worse shape than when we started. If we are to obtain what God has in store for us, we will listen to the voice of God and allow him to lead us.

  31. 20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

One of our greatest down falls, not believing God. If we look closely at our person, we will begging to see many imperfections. Most of the time, the deeper we look the more we will find.

If your looking for an excuse, you’ll find one. But if you can just trust your man of God and believe the Holy scriptures, you will notice that it’s not by your strength or might but by the Lord.

  32. 20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

Youth are great influence in the eyes of other people. When youth give themselves to God they cause a great revival that no one can stop….motivate and inspire youth to live for God!!! NO FEAR

  33. 24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey.

We must be careful what we take into our spirit. Gideon took the gold from the men, and it became a snare to him. We take on things that brings attitudes and spirits into our lives, and if we are not careful it can become a snare to us.

  34. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.
34 And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
35 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

To me it’s hard to believe that this people continue to backslide after each great leader God raises up to deliver them. What I don’t see is training the next leaders to lead the people in following God. Again lack of Leadership and the people resort to their own ways. God has become a fire escape only to them. People backslide today, after the goodness of God saved them. People need to become involved in leading others so there is an established venue to continue living for God generation after generation. I’m thankful we have this at POFW.

  35. 22. Then the men of Is’-ra-el said unto Gid’-e-on, Rule thou over us, but thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Mid’-I-an. 23. And Gid’-e-on said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. God is ruler over all the earth !!

  36. “They forgot the LORD their God, who had rescued them from all their enemies surrounding them. Nor did they show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-baal (that is, Gideon), despite all the good he had done for Israel.”
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭8:34-35‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭103:1-2‬ ‭NLT‬‬
