Judges 9

1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

3 And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.

5 And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.

7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.

9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

16 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;

17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

18 And ye are risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)

19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,

23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.

27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?

29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30 And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.

32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.

36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37 And Gaal spake again, and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.

41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.

44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.

45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.

47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.

52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.

54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

  1. In the bible days God believed in capital punishment, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
He would do unto others as they would do unto Him.

  2. 19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

  3. 14. At last the trees came to the worthless thornbush, saying, “You come and reign over us.”

    15. And the thornbush said to the trees, “If in good faith you want to anoint me as your king, then come and take refuge in my shade (of which there was precious little). But if you haven’t come in good faith, then let fire come from my brambles and burn down the cedars of Lebanon.” Voice

Be careful who you follow and allow to have influence in your life. If you take refuge in the shade of a thorn bush, you’re gonna get stuck!

  4. In reading this chapter, we see how Abimelech never saw it coming. He was so busy with self, that he never looked up. We must stay focused on God and not our own will. Abimelech paid for all that he did in killing his brothers and bringing shame on his father’s family. The people of Shechem were also punished for helping Abimelech. We must be careful what we take part in and part of. Always seek the Lord’s guidance and direction in all that we do.

  5. 11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

Should I forsake my good fruit? Should I compromise who I am and how GOD uses/blesses me?…..all for title? Position? A raise at work? Not every door opened or step up offered is from the LORD. USE GODLY WISDOM.

  6. And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull. (‭Judges‬ ‭9‬:‭5, 53‬ KJV)

Just when you think you have the upper hand. Pride and rebellion has away of killing you!

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭12‬ KJV)

  7. THE GOD FACTOR

56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

Decisions are made daily in our lives. We find ourselves in position to lead or follow, bless or curse, honor or dishonor, respect or disrespect. Hope or fear, believe or doubt. One fact is sure, GOD knows the thought and intent of our heart. GOD knows what we have said, thought and done.

Vengence is the LORDS and he will repay. Lets be prayerful about how and what we do to others. GOD will ensure that we are recipients of whatever we sow.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  8. I followed after false profits and gods. I know I was headed in the way of Abimelech; God saw in me what I didn’t even see at the time. We do have to be careful in whom we follow and allow to guide us. All that it takes is one missed step and then you’re gone. In the days of Abimelech, God put His children to the test and most of the time they failed. God would send armies to punish them, then the children cried out to God and He would send someone to free them. That person would die and here we go again. How many times has God pulled me form the pits, how many times has He pulled you from the pits. More importantly, how many more times will it take for you (me) to learn the lesson that has been set down in front of us (me)……….God is awesome……….Amen!!!

  9. Being bad is easy – for a season. Sin is fun and joyful – for a season. Then we must pay for what we have chosen to do. The most indignant way for a warrior to die was by the hand of a woman.

54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

This is exactly how God chose for Abimelech to pay for his sins. What will be our penance?

  10. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness. The curse of Jotham son of Jerub-Baal came on them.

Glory!!! Jesus!!! Have mercy upon us Jesus!! We need to be sensitive to Gods spirit and realize that if we don’t follow God we are just throwing everything away. If we don’t give ourselves to God we are missing out from His promises. His Word is true and will always be true…Jesus will always be there for us. Help me Lord to be just like you and obey your commands!!1 I need you Lord everyday every second….Thank you for your mercy and grace!!!!

  11. 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

It’s all fun and games until reality sets in. When they begin to fear the consequences of their choices, they want to run back home.

  12. “In this way, God punished Abimelech for the evil he had done against his father by murdering his seventy brothers. God also punished the men of Shechem for all their evil. So the curse of Jotham son of Gideon was fulfilled.”
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭9:56-57‬ ‭NLT‬

There are times it may seem like people get away with evil. You will always reap what you sow good or evil.

  13. 14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

  14. 56 In this way, God punished Abimelech for the evil he had done against his father by murdering his seventy brothers.
57 God also punished the men of Shechem for all their evil. So the curse of Jotham son of Gideon was fulfilled. (NLT)

We will always face the results of our decisions. Choose wisely the actions you take, the words you speak, and the people you follow.

  15. iLove to Grow in the Word

56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Wow, as this story unfolded I began to think that Abimelech would get away as a victor. However, God enforced punishment on both the city and Abimelech just as was prophesied. Sometimes it appears the wicked are winning but God always gets the last Word in.

  16. Judges 9:4-5 & 56-57
    4) And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-be-rith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
    5) And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

    56) Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
    57) And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

You will reap what you sow.
Gal. 6:7-8 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”

Where are you sowing today? To the flesh or Spirit?

  17. 56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
“Vengeance is mine saith the Lord, I will repay God does not forget wrongdoing. He will forgive you for your sin if you repent but he will not forget it if you don’t ask. So Abimelech received the judgment that he deserved. We must be careful to seek God’s forgiveness and mercy and let his blood cover us because if not we could end up like him.

  18. 56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

God will judge us for our sin. Now thankfully we live under grace that we have an opportunity to repent and live a holy life. But the word even says. Paraphrasing that if we only live through grace. That we shouldn’t do that. Because the grace that God gives us is for a time. Just like a parent, their grace only lasts for a bit. Then they have to correct their children. In some cases very extremely. But it’s through love. So remember that yes we live in grace. But for how long? One day we won’t have it. One day it will be to late.

  19. 1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

Some people are wolves in sheeps clothing. We must be careful who we call our brethren and who we let into our homes, families and spirits. Some are just coming to steal, kill and destroy what God has for us.

  20. 17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand Midian

Some time we need to remindr what god brought us out the things we overcame with the help of god

  21. 12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

Be carful who you let be a Godly influence in your life!!

  22. “Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” The word of God (Jesus) identifies for all to see the difference; between God chosen, and man chosen. One should be cautious of one with a hidden agenda (deceiver), and of an attention-seeker (boaster). Dear God, open our eyes and ears in Jesus name. May God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  23. 56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren: 57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

The Lord allowed Abimelech to rule for a season; however only, for a season. The Lord was true to his word then just as he is today, in that what is sown will be what is reaped. God help us to be kind, considerate and sow what is good, in Jesus

  24. 37 And Gaal spake again, and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.

38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.

Sometimes you have to face the ones you talk against, and its usualy not pleasant!

  25. Judges 9:56 (NLT)
56 In this way, God punished Abimelech for the evil he had done against his father by murdering his seventy brothers.

We all leave a legacy. Our actions today will set he course for the future. Are we writing a tragedy like Abimilech? He had all that anyone could want but at the experience expense of his brother’s lives.

Our daily lives tell the story of our future. I today am benefiting from the prayers of my grandparents and parents. I am living in the blessings of their tears and cries to God.

Leave a good legacy by daily doing what is right.

  26. Because we may hold a position, it doesn’t give us a right to treat others wrong. Do unto others what you want done to you. No one is exempt, we will rewp what we sow.

  27. “God avenged the evil Abimelech had done to his father, murdering his seventy brothers. And God brought down on the heads of the men of Shechem all the evil that they had done, the curse of Jotham son of Jerub-Baal.”
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭9:56-57‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Let God seek revenge in the situations for those who have done you wrong. His ways are greater than ours

  28. Gideon was foolish in his turning to idolatry after God used him. We see the evidence of his lack of morality through his son. Abimelech means “my father is king,” and he had taken control my murdering many of his brothers. The people wanted to make Gideon King, but Gideon wisely says no since the King would come out of Judah not Manassah. Abimelech, however, listed for power and took matters into his own hand. His folly comes in due season as it does to those who supported him.

  29. 15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, ‘If you truly want to make me your king, come and take shelter in my shade. If not, let fire come out from me and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

Why would anyone want to be sheltered by a thorn bush. The other trees offered shade and protection. A thorn bush will never offer any kind of protection, it offers pain and suffering. Be careful who you follow, and what you follow.

  30. 56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

We returned to Abimelech and the men of Shechem what they sowed. It is the same today. Sow what you want to reap. Goodness, gentleness, temperance….

  31. 56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:

57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

What ever one sows one shall reap. We should know that for the things we do we shall be held accoubtable for. Thank God for his goodness and mercy that gives us time for conviction and for repentance.

  32. 53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.

54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

You got beat up by a girl.

This passage prove not everything has changed with time. Even today, getting beat up by a girl is a shame. It’s so crazy how God has to deal with us at time. Everyone responds to different things differently. So God has to deal with us all differently. Some thru harder trails than others all because of our stubbornness.

  33. 12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

Be careful what you let reign over your life. If Jesus isn’t the center, then something else is.

  34. 56. Thus God rendered the wickedness of A- bim’-e-lech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren: 57. And all the evil of the men of She’-chem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jo’-tham the son of Jer-ub-ba’-al. Be obedient to God !!

  35. For the second time in Judges a women kills the opposition in a conflict. Just as Jael killed Sisera using a “familiar tool” (Jdg 4:21) so this woman of Thebez uses a domestic tool to kill Abimelech when he attacks her town. In the tower where her neighbors take refuge she doesn’t crouch in fear, but she stands near the edge dropping her milestone on Abimelech’s head at just the opportune moment. A milestone is a indispensable domestic tool for women of her day. She takes it with her when she runs from her home to the tower, probably thinking ahead that she would need to continue to provide bread for her family. A women who prepares for success can find it even if it’s not the way she may have expected it
