Judges 14

1 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.

2 And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

5 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.

6 And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

7 And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.

8 And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion.

9 And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.

10 So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.

11 And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

12 And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:

13 But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

14 And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.

15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?

16 And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?

17 And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? and he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.

19 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.

20 But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

  1. Verse 3 AMP “But his father and mother said to him, “Is there no woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised (pagan) Philistines?” And Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, because she [a]looks pleasing to me.” We must be careful what we choose. What looks pleasing may not always be right. In everything we do, we must seek the direction of the Lord through prayer.

  2. 15. On the fourth day they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband to explain the riddle for us, or we will burn down your father’s house with you in it. Did you invite us to this party just to make us poor?”

    16. So Samson’s wife came to him in tears and said, “You don’t love me; you hate me! You have given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.” “I haven’t even given the answer to my father or mother,” he replied. “Why should I tell you?”

    17. So she cried whenever she was with him and kept it up for the rest of the celebration. At last, on the seventh day he told her the answer because she was tormenting him with her nagging. Then she explained the riddle to the young men. NLT

Be careful that you are not deceived by things that are not the way they appear to be. Samson thought that she was crying because she thought that he didn’t love her enough to tell her the answer, but she was probably crying from fear of being burned alive. People are not always honest about their motives. If she had told Samson about the threat, I’m sure the outcome would have been different.

  3. 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

Israelites continued to sin against God and each time they turned their face away He would let them be taken by the Philistines. This span lasted forty years. But the great thing about God is even though we are disobedient children at times and His anger can be kindled against us He still loves us. He will always produce a way out of sin. It may not be what we expected, but He loves us and wants us to succeed and have a fruitful life all while giving Him honor and praise. Even though there may be some confusing situations among you ask God what you should do in the manner. You never know…it could be from Him. Be sensitive.

    • I also just realized that Samson’s wife did not trust in the ability of her husband. Had she told him of the threat on her fathers house it would have been handled, but she let her fear overtake her.

  4. 3 His father and mother objected. “Isn’t there even one woman in our tribe or among all the Israelites you could marry?” they asked. “Why must you go to the pagan Philistines to find a wife?” But Samson told his father, “Get her for me! She looks good to me.”
4 His father and mother didn’t realize the Lord was at work in this, creating an opportunity to work against the Philistines, who ruled over Israel at that time. (NLT)

We should always seek the Lord for direction.

  5. I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife. 14:2
Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes. 14:3
Then he went down and talked with the woman, and she was right in Samson’s eyes. 14:7

What eyes are we using; carnal eyes or spiritual eyes? Clearly, Samson was only interested in the carnal desire for this Philistine woman. As we are looking for a mate/spouse, do we consider their spiritual stance before we consider their physical stance? A person may be a good person but a lousy Christian. We all know how this story ends, Samson looses his eyes. However, we can tell by these verses he was spiritually blind before he was physically blind.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, Hebrews 12:2

  6. 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

Gods plans are not always easy to recognize that is why we must always go to God in prayer about every situation!

  7. “And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee? And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.”

  8. You can’t make a deal with the enemy

12 And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:

The thing is that the enemy doesn’t play by the rules. The enemy is a liar and a cheat. You can’t take him at his word. Making deals with the enemy will alway leave you the loser. We don’t even have to talk to the enemy let alone play games with him. We can stand tall in our victory because the enemy is already defeated. Why them make a deal with him?

  9. CAUGHT IN A LOOK (DEATH AT FIRST SIGHT)

1 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.

Most have heard the phrase, it was “Love at First Sight”. Reading this chapter again today, and knowing how the story ends, it seems that “Death at First Sight” would be applicable here.

1-2 Samson went down to Timnah. There in Timnah a woman caught his eye, a Philistine girl. He came back and told his father and mother, “I saw a woman in Timnah, a Philistine girl; get her for me as my wife.”
3 His parents said to him, “Isn’t there a woman among the girls in the neighborhood of our people? Do you have to go get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?”
But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s the one I want—she’s the right one.” MSG

    Why?

    1. Samson was looking in the wrong field.
    2. Samson disregarded and dishonored his parents.
    3. Samson was adamant about the ONE he wanted.
    4. Samson was willing to RISK all that GOD had done for him to have what he saw.
    5. Samson placed more energy, confidence in what he saw than what he KNEW.

Just because they look good to the eye does not mean that they are RIGHT with GOD.

  10. 2 And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.

3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
Samson messed up first by looking in the wrong place for a woman. Instead of seeking among the church girls he decided to direct his attention to the ungodly woman of the world. For all the young people : It matters who you marry! And it matters the direction your looking for a spouse. The direction your looking is the direction your headed. Look in the church!

  11. 19 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.

Its just the beginning, he gave a riddle no man would know how to answer, but when they gave the answer he knew! Deception comes in all manner, you think something is one way, but infact its another.

18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? and he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.

  12. 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

his parents didnt know that she was like a test for their son but they knew that girl wasnt good for him. They even woyld ask him that why didnt he like anyone from where he lives why her. samson was blinded by just her outside beauty and that was all that matter to him.

  13. 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

    Obey your parents!

  14. Judges 14:1-4 Samson’s life becomes a lesson in the tragedy of self-will.His marriage was a clear violation of the Law (Deut.7:3, Ex.34:16) . Nevertheless, God sovereignly overruled the defects in Samson’s character to bring about His good purpose for Israel.

  15. 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.

Stay with what you know. As we will keep reading the story of Sampson, we will see the endeavors that he will have to go through. In ISM we are having a series on #relationshipgoals. And we have been talking about fr8ends for a season. Maybe Sampson should have listened to his parents.

  16. Samson knew he was a special child to the Lord and no doubt heard that through his childhood. However, he did not realize the sacrifice of his parents – beginning before he was conceived. As a result, he had no respect toward his parents and their sacrifices-he only knew himself to be special. He stepped over the line when he desired a wife from the enemy who Israel was captive to. He disregarded his parents advice and demanded this woman and was in trouble from the start. Being a child of God puts a target on your back. Stay submitted and under authority and seek godly counsel and the Lord will deliver you out of all your troubles.

  17. Judges 14:2-3 (NLT)
    2) When he returned home, he told his father and mother, “A young Philistine woman in Timnah caught my eye. I want to marry her. Get her for me.”
    3) His father and mother objected. “Isn’t there even one woman in our own tribe or among all the Israelites you could marry?” they asked. “Why must you go to the pagan Philistines to find a wife?”
But Samson told his father, “Get her for me! She looks good to me.”

This made me think of 2 Cor. 6:14, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”

Don’t look at “things” that would cause you to become unequally yoked.

  18. iLove to Grow in the Word

4His father and mother didn’t realize the lord was at work in this, creating an opportunity to work against the Philistines, who ruled over Israel at that time.

I have always been intrigued with this passage of scripture. Why would God raise up a man to be judge over Israel and this man falls for the pagan girls. The word says that God did it for an opportunity to bring deliverance from the Philistines.

This shows me that we can be anointed and be in leadership and God might even use us, but that doesn’t mean God approves of everything we are doing. God uses both our strengths and our weaknesses to accomplish his will. Just as he used the weaknesses of Judas in order to betray him to bring salvation to the rest of the world.

  19. 15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?

16 And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?

17 And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

  20. 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

  21. Should I do it??

    Proverbs 29-
Show me people who drink too much, who have to try out fancy drinks, and I will show you people who are miserable and sorry for themselves, always causing trouble and always complaining.
    {Good news bible version}

I’m around people who love to drink and do drugs and do thier thing they like to do. We can not fall into the trap just to be friends with them..that’s how alot of backsliders fall away from God is because they chose to be around ungodly people and do what the world want s them to do.
But, is it worth it?? No.

  22. 1 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.

This reminded me of Proverbs 1:8 KJV
“My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:”

  23. Judges 14:4 (Message)
4 (His father and mother had no idea that God was behind this, that he was arranging an opportunity against the Philistines. At the time the Philistines lorded it over Israel.)

Samson had two ways of fulfilling his destiny. He could either listen to his parents and to God and lead Israel against the philistines or he could live his own life and God position him to fulfill his destiny vicariously through his actions.

If God says he is going to do something through us it will happen whether we are saved or not. Samson could have led an army and gotten victory but instead sacrificed his life and got victory.

  24. 17 And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

The old adage, ‘Oh, what a tangled web we weave. When we first practice to deceive.’ Samson had no idea what he was getting into with taking a Philistine for his wife. He was carnal in sight; had he been using his spiritual sight. Samson would have seen through the flesh of his wife. We need to watch for those that would try to take advantage and use things against us. Guard our hearts and our minds……Thank you Jesus….Amen!!!

  25. 6 At that moment the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. But he didn’t tell his father or mother about it.

If only we all could be this strong spiritually, we would have the power to destroy the devil. But with the holy ghost instilled within us, we do have the power to destroy the devil with ease.

  26. The very thing that Samson chased after and loved, against the guidelines of marrying within his own tribe, deceived him and caused his anger to be kindled against her. It is a sad day when people are deceived by the very thing that drew them away from truth and their relationship with the Lord.

It reminds me of an old song:
He always paints a beautiful picture, the colors are so bright and gay,
The people seem to look so happy, he knows how to paint them that way
He always paints a beautiful picture, it always seems to be ideal
Satan always paints a beautiful picture, but I found out that it’s not for real.

  27. Keeping our heart guarded by the written word. Keeping our minds in submission to the will of a God and not our own desires. If Samson had kept his whole heart in tune with God and kept his thoughts covered by the presence of the Almoghty ne he would have not given into the desire of the Pagan woman who destroyed his strength. This is all the nene my wants to do is entice us in order to weaken our relationship with God. God help us to stay in your perfect will and not seek after anything or anyone that would not be according to Your will .

  28. Just because something seem good to you, doesn’t mean it’s good in God’s eyes. This chapter shows the importance of doing things God’s way. Samson walked into trouble because he wanted to do things his way. Imagine how awesome it would be if everyone yielded to the commandments of God.

  29. 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
Find your spouse at the alter. If the person your looking at doesn’t pray, they don’t worship, they don’t have any spiritual desires in the kingdom of God. Why watse your time with fleshly desires. Seek Gods kingdom first and all these things shall be added unto you.

  30. 17 And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.

  31. Falling into the hands of the Strongman

4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

Samson was a young man passionately seeking purpose yet lacking decrement and wisdom. Wisdom is the application of knowledge. Samson was taught to marry of his own people yet he passionately seeks a woman from Philistine.

The Bible says that “…it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines.”

4 Meanwhile, his father and mother did not know that she was from the LORD, because he had been seeking a favorable opportunity concerning the Philistines, since the Philistines were dominating Israel at that time. (International Standard Version)

The Lord sent her to him? “The steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord” why would God allow such a great man to to take such a drastically wrong step? Please understand me I do not believe God wanted Samson to marry her, just place her into his life for him to discern that there was a strongman that needed to be broken.

We must be very careful of the people we attach ourselves to because some people are only in our lives for us to learn a lesson not to build a connection with. If Samson would have understood her purpose in his life it would have fueled him to drive out the strongman because no one or thing should have dominion over the chosen children of God.

No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. Mark 3:27

In the end Samson’s was so hurt that he was willing to die in order to defeat the strongman. We must learn from Samson and not wait until we fall but grab ahold of the spirit of discernment and not fall into the hands of the strongman but bind the strongman.

  32. “But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.” The word of God (Jesus) identified why. As we read here one may never understand why, one is the recipient of a trial or tribulation caused by a circumstance or another; until Jesus (God) reveals it. Dear God, let us not to grow weary, but learn to seek you and your will. May God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  33. 6 And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

Some of our greatest battles are going to be won on our own. With no audience, no assistance, and no one to brag to. We don’t have to tell everyone everything we’ve done, instead we should give God the glory because he rewards people for what it done secret.

Samson didn’t brag or boast on what he did because he knew it was only God. In this same way we should be humble about what we do for the kingdom of God, it’s not meant for us to get the glory and we would be wise to remember that when we slay our lions.

  34. “And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.” Weeping and other such forms of deception have been used for various reasons throughout the years, which even a child will use to get their way. Samson gave in as he grew weary; whereas if he had sought the Lord he may not have been deceived. God let us learn to seek you so that we may not be deceived, in Jesus name.

  35. 12 And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:

13 But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

14 And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.

15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?

  36. 1 Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.

Before a person can pick out a future spouse, they would be very wise to take some time to determine exactly what the want and need. Samson went by impulse and picked a poor choice to pursue, and of course bad things followed. Fortunately, Jesus already knows what he wants and needs in His Bride, the church, and has made it clear to us so that we can be ready to go to Him when He returns.

He wants a Bride who is holy, who has a relationship with Him, one that does not have a wandering heart to go after idols, a Bride that is ready and waiting for Him, a Bride without spot or wrinkle, a Bride who treasures His Words and delights herself in Him, a Bride who adorns herself with the fruit of His Spirit and seeks to live pleasing to Him, one who will gladly be the mother of His children and not just help individuals be born again but nurture them and help them walk in maturity.

There are many roles for His Bride but He carefully lets them know every way that she will be, each way we must strive to be as believers born again into His church. Carnality will get us pain, anguish, and death like that which came to Samson because of his sin and trouble with pick women not fit to be his bride. When we know what it is that God desires for us and we put away all hindrances to becoming that, we will find that Jesus is loving and kind to nurture His church and help her to be the Bride He will be returning for.

  37. Marrying an Outsider

Samson’s parents react with shock when he asks them to get a wife for him from the Philistine neighbors. By Gods law he should have married one of the local Isrealite girls (Dt 7:3-4), but Samson will not hear it. He already knows not to intermarry with the nations surrounding him and within marriage the influences of these pagan cultures will dilute the worship of the of the one true God. God will in turn use Samsons weakness to bring about his purpose with the punishment of the Phillistines who are opressing the Isrealites. God will use our good and courageous acts as well as out disobedience and waywardness to accomplish his great purpose and plan.

  38. 3. Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Phil’-is-tines? And Sam’-son said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well. I Love you Jesus !!!!
