Judges 15

1 But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.

2 And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.

3 And Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.

4 And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.

5 And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.

6 Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.

7 And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

8 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.

9 Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.

10 And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.

11 Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

12 And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

13 And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

16 And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.

17 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramathlehi.

18 And he was sore athirst, and called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?

19 But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.

20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

  1. 14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

16 And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.

  2. Verses 18-19 CEV say “Samson was so thirsty that he prayed, “Our Lord, you helped me win a battle against a whole army. Please don’t let me die of thirst now. Those heathen Philistines will carry off my dead body.” Samson was tired and weary, but God sent water gushing from a rock.[i] Samson drank some and felt strong again. Samson named the place Caller Spring,[j] because he had called out to God for help. The spring is still there at Jawbone.” Samson knew who he needed to cry out to for help; but, unfortunately there are so many still out there that do not know who they can call out to. Lord help us (POFW) to show them. JESUS today YOU will SAVE me.

  3. 11. Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

    12. And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

Three thousand men came to bind him, and they still had to ask permission!

When we are filled with the Spirit of God, we are stronger than anything that tries to bind us. We only get bound when we allow ourselves to be through a moment of weakness; usually caused by lack of prayer and Word.

  4. iLove to Grow in the Word

14As Samson arrived at Lehi, the Philistines came shouting in triumph. But the Spirit of the lord came powerfully upon Samson, and he snapped the ropes on his arms as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists. 15Then he found the jawbone of a recently killed donkey. He picked it up and killed 1,000 Philistines with it.

The Lord used Samson mightily to wage war against the pagans. Samson was far from the perfect example of living righteously for the Lord. Many of us in the church are used mightily by the Lord. Whether it’s filling up a bus, or teaching a class God, is using us. The thing about it is, God will use us but it doesn’t prove we are living right.

  5. 14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

This is the hope that we have, when everything seems to have surrounded us an bound us up we can always trust that God through His Spirit will deliver us and will make His power known through us.

    2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

  6. 3 And Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.

Oh my, Samson. We are always responsible for pur behavior…no matter how bullheaded we may be.

  7. JESUS, A MAN AND A BONE = VICTORY

The life of Samson is very relative to many believers today. We make painfully selfish decisions that land in battles that we didn’t ask for nor prepare for. These battles land us in fights that would be historic tragedies without the help and assistance of the LORD our GOD.

Too often we attempt to fight these battles on our own. We fail to invite and include the most important, most influential, most powerful source of all; JESUS. Though Samson had engaged in the rage of battle on his own. GOD was willing to help him to defeat a nagging foe and faithful adversary, “the Philistines”. Sis Chenault taught us that the Philistines in the old testament represented a type of “the carnal flesh” in the new testament, because they were never totally destroyed and we cannot destroy our flesh; only continually overcome its lusts.

JESUS reveals to us here that with a dead dry bone, a desperate man and JESUS that 1 man can slay 1000 adversaries. This is not natural, therefore we declare the supernatural power of GOD enabled or empowered Samson to overcome the devastating odds.

Be inspired today that whether you face 1, 10, 100 or 1000 adversities that with GOD all you need is to find a bone, a memory, something to place in your hand for GOD to work through. Dont stop, Dont quit, Dont give up, in or out.

The donkey by nature is not a vicious animal. Never has it been said: that donkey went out of control and slew 1000 men. GOD can and will use a dead resource to miraculously provide for a living need. Here GOD used the bone of a dead animal, in Egypt and at the Red Sea, GOD used the limb of a dead tree (Staff). Look around you today and discern and determine what GOD can use in YOUR hand to deliver you, even if you did get yourself into the mess.

  8. 14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.
16 And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.
17 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramathlehi.
the spirit of God is powerful!

  9. As a Nazarite, Samson had three rules to follow; do not touch the dead, do not cut his hair, do not drink or touch grapes. Samson repeatedly broke the first rule. First; when he not only touched but ate the honey from the carcass of the lion, and later when he slew the Philistines with the jawbone. The Bible does not say whether Samson repented of this sin; I would predict not as he sang a song about killing all those men with his new jawbone. We all know the rest of the story of how when his hair was cut the Spirit of the Lord left Samson.

So, Samson was a habitual sinner. Yet, God continued to use him. Finally, Samson crossed enough lines that God no longer wanted to use Samson. Samson finally repented and God restored his strength. How does this apply to us? If we find ourselves involved in sin, stop. Repent. Ask God to keep us sensitive to situations that will lead us to sin again. We will all be tested but if we are sensitive to our urges we can defeat these temptations.

  10. 11 Three companies of men from Judah went down to the cave at Etam Rock and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines already bully and lord it over us? So what’s going on with you, making things even worse?”

He said, “It was tit for tat. I only did to them what they did to me.”

  11. 4 And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.

Ok so Samson was mad at his wife and went and killed a few heathen, but her daddy said, welp, hes mad at you so here hun, go with this man…I just cant comprehend the anger he felt, everytime he got angry, he destroyed a bunch of Philistines and their stuff, thank God if im angry i can go to God ( not always, first i throw a fit ) … I would be dead if i had the temperment Samson had, But then it was all apart of Gods perfect plan…it kinda reminds me of a play i just was a part of!

  12. God can use you whether you live for him or not. This does not “fix you”. You are still expected to repent and follow Gods laws.

  13. 4 And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.

Samson was so angry at his father-in-law that he took vengeance on the Philistines. The Philistines retaliated by killing his wife and father-in-law. Retaliation is not the the right way. Be mindful about what you do or say around others; they may try to get something over on you. Always ask God to go before you and give favor in whatever the situation may be. God bless and have a blessed day……..Thank you Jesus…..Amen!!!

  14. 14 As Samson arrived at Lehi, the Philistines came shouting in triumph. But the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson, and he snapped the ropes on his arms as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists. (NLT)

Wow, Lord let Your Spirit powerfully come upon us! When we think we’re down and out, God’s waiting for us to let Him take over. Plug into Jesus and allow Him to show Himself mighty in your situation.

  15. 14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

Samson acted acted against the Phillistines in his own interest-in his revenge of losing his wife. God used him even though Samson didn’t seek God in his actions. In fact, he put his own nation at risk of retaliation from the Phillistines. Like was said before, just because God uses you, doesn’t mean he is pleased with you. We must seek the Lord before we enter a battle, putting on the whole armor of God, having assurance that he is going before you.

  16. 12 And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines.

When your own people turn against you. # friends for a season

  17. 18 And he was sore athirst, and called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?

19 But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
we often hear about God letting water come out of a rock but rarely do we hear about water coming from the Jawbone of a donkey. It appears to me that God will make provision for anyone who serves him no matter what the circumstances are. If he has to create water out of nothing he will do it just to make sure that his people are okay. that’s why we should trust in the Lord with all of our heart and lean not unto our own understanding.

  18. 14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

It doesnt matter who you are the victory is given by the Lord. The word clearly states that the Spirit of the Lord came upon Samson. And the he goes on to recognized that it was because of God that victory came. We should be wise to always give God the glory for he can use anyone to accomplish what God wants.

  19. 11 Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

12 And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

  20. Judges 15:9-11 (MSG)
The Philistines set out and made camp in Judah, preparing to attack Lehi (Jawbone). When the men of Judah asked, “Why have you come up against us?” they said, “We’re out to get Samson. We’re going after Samson to do to him what he did to us.”
Three companies of men from Judah went down to the cave at Etam Rock and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines already bully and lord over us? So what’s going on with you, making things even worse?”
He said, “It was tit for tat. I only did to them what they did to me.”

    Tit for Tat. Retaliation. Vengeance.

    Romans 12:17-19
    17) Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
    18) If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
    19) Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the LORD.

Remember, when you get mad because someone did you wrong, PRAY and PRAY some more, and let the LORD handle the situation.

  21. Judges 15:14 (Message)
14 As he approached Lehi, the Philistines came to meet him, shouting in triumph. And then the Spirit of God came on him with great power. The ropes on his arms fell apart like flax on fire; the thongs slipped off his hands.

When the enemy comes at us the Lord is on our side. He is ready to empower us with his spirit to take on whatever the enemy has to throw at us. The word says that he has placed all things under his feet. I’m thankful we are part of the body and have authority over the enemy.

  22. And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.

The devil wants to bind us from one sin and another sin until we fully die. The devil is here to destroy us completely…. Have no mercy or intimidation against the devil. He is after our soul but the Lord has delivered us completely thank you Jesus!!!! Hallelujah Anyhow!!!!!

  23. Judges 15:14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him,and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

  24. 7 And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

8 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.

It’s easy when someone has done you wrong to want to get revenge on that person for what they have done. After all, it’s only fair, they deserve it right? But that isn’t what the bible says for us to do. The bible tells us that we need to forgive people when they have done us wrong.

In the 18th chapter of Matthew, Jesus tells the story of the servant who ask for forgiveness from his master for a large debt and he gets forgiven from the debt. But then he does not forgive someone else from a debt they owed him. When the Master found out he was angry with him and ended making him pay for his debts. and concludes with this:

Matthew 18:35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

The key is not revenge but forgiveness

  25. 14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

15 And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.

16 And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.

  26. Samson had an authority in God strength to overcome the enemy.
We have 5his authority the Spirit of God is within us to tear down strongholds
To defeat the enemy in Jesus name

  27. 20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

20 years, the people of Israel delt with an arrogant leader. Today we have a hard time allowing someone suggest authority in our direction, an get fighting mad when they “judge” us…

Maybe we should be spending more time in prayer, lifting up those who have authority over us, rather than feeding their clouded decisions with our judgemental and haughty attitudes…

  28. v19 But GOD clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and when he had drunk eater, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.

I’m reminded that no matter how dead our spirits may seems to be
    JESUS IS OUR LIVING WATER.
HE IS OUR SOUCE OF POWER empowering us for spiritual growth.el

  29. sore athirst, and called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?

19 But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.

20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

Samson was thirsty and he knew to run to God to fulfill his thirst.

When in spiritual battle it is important to pray in the spirit and allow the spirit of God to refresh our soul.

  30. “And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.” The word of God (Jesus) identified more than trust. Samson believed the men of Judah when they said they would do him no harm, as he had no reason not to. Dear God, help us to do what is pleasing and acceptable to you, in Jesus name. May God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  31. “And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.” The deception and wrong that Samson encountered would soon be the reason for their fate. The father may have felt he had done no wrong, which often just may be the case. God help us to see our ways and ourselves as you do, in Jesus name.

  32. We see in this chapter God providing for his people. Even when we mess up, God is merciful and still helps in our time of need. Our God is awesome.

  33. 12 And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines.

The actions of his brethren really made it seem as though they did not care about his well being nd only there own. By delivering him into the hnda of his enemy Samson would have surely died.

    BUT GOD!!!!

With the Lord on his side he came out more than a conquerer! Some times when it seems as though your brothers are against you and delivering you to your enemies doorstep they could really be exactly where God placed them so that he could get the glory our of the situation that you’re in

  34. “So 3,000 men of Judah went down to get Samson at the cave in the rock of Etam. They said to Samson, “Don’t you realize the Philistines rule over us? What are you doing to us?” But Samson replied, “I only did to them what they did to me.””
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭15:11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The action of one person affects many. We have all heard the famous line “I’m grown I can make my own decisions” or “it my life. I’ll let it the way I want to.” But the reality is the action they choose to partake in affects all those around them.

  35. My imagination has run wild in this chapter. I would have loved to have been there to see this in person. This is one of the coolest chapters the bible because no matter how much stacked up against Sansom he always came through it. With God on your side, who could be against you?

  36. 14. And when he came unto Le’-hi, the Phil’-is-tines shouted against him: and the Spir’-it of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands. Sing Hallelujah to our God !! He is worthy !!

  37. “And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.”
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭15:14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  38. 7 And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

God is our avenger, Samson took matters into his own hands, that’s why he faced tragedy with the Philistines. God helped Samson even though he didn’t seek him first. There were challenges Samson had to face due to a lack of communication. Let God be God he’s in control.

  39. 11 So 3,000 men of Judah went down to get Samson at the cave in the rock of Etam. They said to Samson, “Don’t you realize the Philistines rule over us? What are you doing to us?” But Samson replied, “I only did to them what they did to me.” 12 But the men of Judah told him, “We have come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.” “All right,” Samson said. “But promise that you won’t kill me yourselves.”

Samson allows himself to be taken by Judah. He had faith God with somehow free him later, after he met with the Philistines. Samson left matters in God’s hands. We too should have the faith, that God will take care on our needs and issues.

  40. When the spirit of he lord comes upon you, you get a boldness to act for him. Sampson got that boldness and killed men that were unrighteous. In Acts it talks about the boldness that comes upon new believers so that we can stand in the face of adersity and speak of Jesus. The Bible also says that we will receive power with that boldness. –watch out people, here comes THE CHURCH!
