Judges 20

1 Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the Lord in Mizpeh.

2 And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?

4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.

6 And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

7 Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.

9 But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;

10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

12 And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?

13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.

14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

15 And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.

17 And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

18 And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.

19 And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.

21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

22 And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.

23 (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.)

24 And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

26 Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

27 And the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

29 And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.

30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

32 And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

33 And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

34 And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.

35 And the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.

36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.

37 And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

38 Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.

39 And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

40 But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.

41 And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.

42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

43 Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.

46 So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

47 But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

48 And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

  1. This chapter spoke to me about unity. The people of Israel came together as one and always inquired of God’s direction in the situation they were in. They never stopped or quit; but, kept moving toward their victory. We too as a church must come together and continue to grow.

  2. Throughout this chapter Isreal shows itself a great example of how to get victory. They were unified, they prayed, fasted and gave offerings unto the Lord before every battle, and then at the end when victory was achieved, to insure sin was purged from the land, they let nothing live in the town. So praise first, seek the Lord and keep Him first throughout the battle, and when it’s over, don’t allow sin opportunity to creep back up.

  3. 7. Now then, all of you-the entire community of Israel-must decide here and now what should be done about this!”

    8. And all the people rose to their feet in unison and declared, “None of us will return home! No, not even one of us! NLT

We, too have to decide what we are going to do about the state of our region; and like them, it must be in unity.

  4. SIMPLE STEPS TO SPIRITUAL VICTORY

    1. GO to Church – 18 And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God…

    2. Ask JESUS for Direction – 18 …and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.

    3. OBEY what JESUS Says – 19 And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.
20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.
21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

    4. ENCOURAGE Yourself and DO IT AGAIN – 22 And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.
23 (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.)

The will of GOD and obedience to his instructions will not always be filled with glitter, glamour and glory. The TEST for Israel as with us today is; will we be OBEDIENT in all situations. If obeying the LORD seems to be going bad, wrong or uncomfortable do we SEEK the LORD again or just take matters in our own hands…?

    1. GO to Church
    2. ASK JESUS for Direction
    3. OBEY the LORD
    4. ENCOURAGE yourself and DO IT AGAIN

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  5. Brother against Brother

Israelites against the children of Benjamin it must of been a hard decision to allow that battle understanding that this man has lost his concubine due to Benjamin’s children sin. The Lord says Romans 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

There were vengeance by the flames of God!!!

  6. 28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

Israel went up against Benjamin 3 times before victory came. The lord sent them and yet they seemed defeated the first 2 times but they pressed on when God sent them once again. Sometimes it looks like the enemy is winning. Sometimes it looks like evil is getting away with its actions but God sees and he knows the end of all things. Evil will be rewarded with evil. Our situation may seem hopeless at times but we need to press on when God sends us out again, our victory may just be in the next battle.

  7. Judges 20:46-48 (NLT)
46 So that day the tribe of Benjamin lost 25,000 strong warriors armed with swords, 47 leaving only 600 men who escaped to the rock of Rimmon, where they lived for four months. 48 And the Israelites returned and slaughtered every living thing in all the towns—the people, the livestock, and everything they found. They also burned down all the towns they came to.

The Bible says be sure your sin will find you out. The men of Gibeah thought that it was worth it to have their so called “fun.” But God’s people are held to a higher standard. He expects his children to follow his word. And when they do not he holds them accountable. That’s what a good father does. The men of Gibeah had a chance to repent but instead rose up in pride.

    No sin is worth it.

  8. Judges 20
This is how we are going to win the battle…
    Ask counsel of God
    Pray
    Fast
    Praise
    Offer offerings to God
Be as one man, knit together, Unified
Encourage yourself and Encourage your brother and sister in the Lord

  9. iLove to grow in the Word

18Before the battle the Israelites went to Bethel and asked God, “Which tribe should go first to attack the people of Benjamin?”
The lord answered, “Judah is to go first.”

When there is sin in the camp…
When there is pride in the camp…
When there is disunity in the camp…
When there is all kinds of evil in the camp…

We must always send up Judah first. Judah is praise.

  10. 17 And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

18 And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.

  11. 28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

Phinehas was given direction to pursue, and the Lord was with them and brought victory to them against the children of Benjamin.

When you have a word from the Lord to stand upon, it makes the task at hand so much better because you know the Lord is with you.

  12. “Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.” The word of God (Jesus) identified all that was sought, were those at fault. The word of God (Creator) may appear harsh to some; however it is the word of God (Judge), and therefore should be revered. Unfortunately one today may see injustice, as the victims or their surviving family members are overshadowed by another. Dear God, let thine will be done, in Jesus name. May God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  13. “Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.” There may be times that we will have to inquire of the Lord more than once, and even twice. The reason may just be that it is a test to see how important it truly is, too us. God help us not grow weary when seeking you, in Jesus name.

  14. 28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
Obedience, and unity! The enemy is defeated! Hallelujah!

  15. 13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel.

The actions of one group of people ended up costing the lives of the tribe of benjamin. The sin should not be allowed and if found must be dealt with.

  16. 18Before the battle the Israelites went to Bethel and asked God, “Which tribe should go first to attack the people of Benjamin?”
The lord answered, “Judah is to go first.”
Whenever we find ourselves in a quandary or in a position of trouble or trial we must remember to “Send up Judah ” because praise will defeat the enemy and give us the Victory every time!

  17. The tribe of Benjamin refused to pay retribution for what was done to the concubine. Thus, a silver war broke out. This war almost removed the Tribe of Benjamin from the face of the earth.

  18. 7 Now then, all of you—the entire community of Israel—must decide here and now what should be done about this!”

Finally, someone decides to take justice into their own hands. Where was the rules and laws, before the tragedy happened. At least Israel realized there needed to be justice.

  19. 18 And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.

  20. 1 Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the Lord in Mizpeh.

God is in control of everything. He heard his people’s cry. He’s our avenger and has our back. If he is for us who could be against us.

  21. 42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

43 Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

It’s amazing how many men were lost on both sides that day. And the reason these many lives were lost was because the children of Israel were divided, they lost their spirit of unity and split up and ended up fighting against each other. They created their own demise and took their lives of their own brothers and sisters. From this we should remember, how many lives might we affect if we decide not to be unified with our brothers and sisters in Christ?

  22. This is the only time the ark of the covenant is actually mentioned in the book of Judges, probably an indication of the lack of reverence the people have for God. Instead of following his commands and seek his will, they go their own way. Their way leads them into sin and chaos as a nation. The Levite and his host put their own comfort and their own welfare above the safety of a woman (Judg 19:20-26). The result is the death not only of the innocent women but also of 25,100 Benjaminite warriors. Wheneve a people follow their own course of action and ignore Gods commands , chaos results. The inocent suffer, the helpless are ignored and a decent, orderly, politically correct way of life is replaced with discord and even anarchy. Gods laws are not in place merely to satisfy his whim or to make life difficult. They are beautifully designed to give life structure and completion. When we miss that we miss the point.

  23. 8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.

The people United as one man to fight this evil within their own nation. It took unity and following the word of the Lord to prevail. Some battles are not so easily won, but they continued to inquire of God and received his assurance they would win. We too much stay united, submitted to our Pastor, so when battles within come, the body of Christ will prevail over the enemy who is set against us.

  24. 18. And the children of Is’-ra-el arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Ben’-ja-min? And the LORD said, Ju’-dah shall go up first. Obey God !!
