1 Samuel 6

1 And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the Lord? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.

3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:

8 And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.

10 And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:

11 And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.

12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.

13 And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the Lord.

15 And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the Lord.

16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

17 And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the Lord; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

18 And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the Lord: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.

19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the Lord; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

  1. The last three verses in this chapter in the MSG are captioned with “If You Are Serious About Coming Back to God”. This made me think about ALL who have left His path and are aimlessly wondering around without direction. We cannot be like some of the men of Beth Shemesh that let their curiosity get the best of them and lost respect as they irreverently peeked into the Chest of God. We must get back to the heart of it all…….JESUS. We must continue to pray as we did last night that the hunger rebirth within us.

  2. 1. And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

    2. And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the Lord? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.

Don’t be a glutton for punishment.

If you’re tired of everything going wrong, have a prayer revival, put God back in His rightful place (first), and watch His mighty hand work in your life.

  3. 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

In the battles we fight in our new territory that has been claimed for God, even the enemy will step back and realize the true work being done here. The devils we fight will give reverence to God. I see GOD showing His wonder in this place and the just and unjust falling on their faces crying out Jesus is LORD! the battle is not ours. Thank you god for the mass healing that took place last night. We sore needed it.

  4. 19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

The men of Bethshemesh let their curiosity get the better of them. No man can look into the face of God. We pray to see HIM and to hear HIM. The Philistines thought that they were above GOD and no one could touch them. They found out that there is no god above GOD. This is where prayer does come into the midst. You can’t know GOD without a prayer life; this is what HE wants for us. To come to HIM I prayer all the time, not just when we feel like it. We should always seek GOD in everything that we do.

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

    Thank you Jesus…….Amen!!!

  5. In these verses the Philistines seemed to have a better understanding and fear of God than did the Israelites. They remembered the history of the captivity and exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Also, they knew what it would take to get God to quit cursing them.

The men of Bethshemesh however, did not know enough not to look into the ark. It was never said that the Philistines look into the ark implying they knew better.

How often do people of the world know better than us what Jesus said that we do. Shame on us!!

  6. 7 “Now then, get a new cart ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.

The cows weren’t expected to go straight because they had never been yoked but they went straight. This is perfect example of what humans do with and without Jesus!!! If we don’t have Jesus and the obedience we will not walk straight and lean toward another path. The Lord is what will keep us in the right path, leading us and guiding us in His walk. Thank you Jesus!!!!

12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.

  7. The Philistines were so confused about what to do with the ark of God. They only could consider making graven images to send with the ark. Rats and Tumors.
What do we bring to God . Are we trying to compensate as the Philistines did. What do I bring to God daily. I pray that each day I can bring something more beautiful than rats and tumors. I pray that whatever life has given me that I will allow the Spirit of God to make something beautiful out of it to be used for His kingdom. Not just rats and tumors.

  8. Milk Cows

Cows make decent mothers. Growing up, we had two large weaning’s each year; the spring and fall. The yearlings had to be kept in a very sturdy pen or they would root and push the fencing until it gave way and they were able to get back to their mothers. The mother cows were just as persistent in trying to get to their calves that were locked in the pens.

Some mother cows would be so upset they would charge us as we were continuing to work the rest of the herd. We would shew them and chance them away from where we were working only to have them return almost immediately; there was no deterring the mother cows from returning and continuing to try to get to their calves.

The Philistines used a genius test to determine if it was “bad luck” or the hand of God that was causing their issues. They took two “milch kin” (milk cows) and not just any milk cows but ones that have never been harnessed before – took their calves away from them and tied the cart to these mothers. It was not “bad luck” it was God. The part that brought back all the memories was in verse 12 “lowing as they went”. Twice a year one can get so tired of hearing cows moo. The mothers and calves stand at the pens mooing for days – literally days; night and day for about 4 days.

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word
1 Samuel 6:9 NLT If they cross the border of our land and go to Beth-shemesh, we will know it was the LORD who brought this great disaster upon us. If they don’t, we will know it was not His hand that caused the plague. It came simply by chance.”

God is alive and wants to show his glory. The Philistines were terrified of the God of Israel but it didnt stop them from attacking. The enemy is terrified of God as well and yet he still wages war against the Almighty.

  10. The Ark of the LORD remained in Philistine territory seven months in all. Then the Philistines called in their priests and diviners and asked them, “What should we do about the Ark of the LORD? Tell us how to return it to its own country.” (‭1 Samuel‬ ‭6‬:‭1-2‬ NLT)

The Ark of The Lord in the midst of you and your ‘gods’, and you would think that after seeing the hand of the Lord at work crushing every idol and showing who is the real and One and ONLY TRUE GOD, PERHAPS THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A CHANGE IN THE LIVES OF THESE PEOPLE….but NO!
The same for us(me) being in the presence of the ALMIGHTY GOD, how can one not want to get up and worship the TRUE LIVING GOD after all my eyes have seen! This scripture comes to mind..

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. (‭Acts‬ ‭7‬:‭51‬ KJV)

  11. 12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.

These “kine” had probably never seen the Ark before, nor had they have been to the House of God where it belonged. They didn’t know where to bring it and yet they brought it in the right direction… how?

Obviously they had something to guide them and that was the presence of God. They had the presence of God on their cart and that lead them to the direction of the house of God. When you got the presence in your life, or on your “cart” it will lead you to the House of God! And when you go to the House of God, other people will follow you there!

  12. 1 Samuel 6:17 These are the gold tumors the Philistines sent as a guilt offering to the Lord one for each for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. And the number of the gold rats was according to the number of the Philistine towns belonging to the five rulers the fortified towns with their country villages. The large rock on which the Levites sent the Ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh. But God struck down some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh putting seventy of them to death because they looked into the Ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. And the people of Beth Shemesh asked who can stand in the presence of the Lord this holy God? To whom will the ark go up from here? To whom will the ark go up from here? Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jerim saying the Philistines have returned the Ark of the Lord come down and take it up to your town.

  13. 20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

  14. 3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

  15. “And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.” The word of God (Jesus) stated, what and how. Perhaps the word of God (Judge) should not just be read, but whole heartedly obeyed; “Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Dear God, forgive us (me) of any/all sin, so that our (my) land may be healed. May God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  16. “And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.” They watched and followed the ark of God return; however they still returned to their gods. We must pray that none will simply watch or follow just far enough, only to return once again too false gods and deception. God help us to reach and seek you so that none are led astray or away from you, in Jesus name.

  17. 19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

    Don’t temp God
The people of that city were foolish because they decided to temp God and therefore temp fate. They should have remember that the bible clearly says if you temp God you will die. But instead they played with fire and got burt. Let’s not pay with God or His glory because if we do nothing can stand in our way.

  18. 9 If they cross the border of our land and go to Beth-shemesh, we will know it was the Lord who brought this great disaster upon us. If they don’t, we will know it was not his hand that caused the plague. It came simply by chance.” (NLT)

Some people just need to see it to believe it. Unfortunately, society has drawn God into this need to see category and continue to attempt knocking faith with facts. We must stay strong in the Lord and continue to thirst after Him and His kingdom just like last nights service. Elevate your faith, never lose trust in God and know that He alone is the one true living God!

  19. 19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

    The Lord Bless Thee

Its funny how they were disobedient but was questioning God and his discipline, Nobody can stand before God, we all will bow at his awesome and Glorious presence, thats why we need to just be obedient, and do the things we know that are right to do! If we do that then we cant ask that question, because standing before him wont be an option, but kneeling before him will! GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME, AND ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD

  20. 1 And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the Lord? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.

The Philistines were well aware that God was not on their side, and they knew the only way to turn his wrath away from them was to get the ark out of the midst.

Too many times when people don’t want to really “hear” what the Lord is telling them, they try to do the same thing. The push God outside their circle (the think) hoping that He will change His mind, or they will just avoid Him. However, God has a way of getting His point across. We can ignore what He’s telling us, but eventually we will come to our senses and either go back and do what He’s asking, or suffer the consequences of doing things our own way and them not turning out like we thought they would.

  21. CURIOSITY KILLS THE CARNAL

Beth-Shemesh of Judah is thus clearly fixed near the western lowland, close to the border between the territory of Judah and that claimed by the Philistines.

The Danite tribe was unable to control the lands of its inheritance because of the Amorites (Judg. 1:34-35) and/or the Philistines. Some were forced into the hills near Zorah and Eshtaol (as was Samson’s family, Judg. 13:1-2). Beth-shemesh was apparently controlled by Israel (ca. 1050 B.C.) when the ark of the covenant passed through the city upon returning from the Philistines (1 Sam. 6:13). Around 795 B.C.

The location of Bethshemesh is important because, not only does it identify where the Philistines (adversary) was comfortable to trespass, it also identifies the people that were living close to the border of RIGHT vs WRONG. These BORDER dwellers are likened to the carnal believer:

    1. In the church but could cross over at any time.
    2. Living just within the boundaries of the church.
    3. Not strong enough to overcome or defeat the enemy, so they live in neutral position.
    4. Know about the Power of GOD, but don’t understand the covenants associated with the demonstration of the Glory of GOD.

    MSG
19-20 God struck some of the men of Beth Shemesh who, out of curiosity, irreverently peeked into the Chest of God. Seventy died. The whole town was in mourning, reeling under the hard blow from God, and questioning, “Who can stand before God, this holy God? And who can we get to take this Chest off our hands?”

The Border/Carnal people knew what the ark of the LORD represented, but they didn’t understand its value. They rejoiced when they saw it, but they dismantled it when they possessed it.

    MSG
13-15 The people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting wheat in the valley. They looked up and saw the Chest. Jubilant, they ran to meet it. The cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth Shemeshite, and stopped there beside a huge boulder. The harvesters tore the cart to pieces, then chopped up the wood and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering to God. The Levites took charge of the Chest of God and the sack containing the gold offerings, placing them on the boulder. Offering the sacrifices, everyone in Beth Shemesh worshiped God most heartily that day.

Carnal people can destroy a divine move of GOD.

May GOD help us to THIRST for HIM and HIS Kingdom to not be carnally minded, but Spiritually minded to know, honor, revere and respect his GLORY and ALL that has to do with HIS Kingdom.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  22. 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

The philistines knew it was the God of Israel that was causing them distress. Did they turn from their ways? No. But they gave honor to God after recognizing his power. Not everyone who sees Gods hand move mightily in our lives will change their ways and serve God. However they cannot deny the power of God. They may choose to continue in their ways but they will always remember what they know our God did.

  23. 1 And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

    ……..

God is not a respecter of persons. He had to teach both the heathen and the children of God to respect the Holy things of God. Now the philistines did not know better but they learned their lesson quick and sent back the ark. I see here a fault that the descendants of the children of God were not taught to have that fear of God to respect the holy things of God. It may just have been that the proper fear of the Lord was not passed down and they just got so comfortable with it that they “lost the sense of holiness” so accustomed to it that there was no longer a reverence. We need to make sure to be constant and do not allow ourselves to make it a mundane every day thing, but to keep that fear and awe reverence for the things of God, the sanctuary, the prayer room, the offering, and anything that is of the Lord and is holy. And make sure we instill this respect and love for our Lord Jesus and the holy things of God. Just like he taught the worldly people a lesson so did he teach the children God that were disrespectful and unlearned or ignorant of his ways. The word tells that hos people perish fir lack of knowledge. It is our job to share the true and whole gospel with others old and young. We have a just God.

For there is no respect of persons with God.
    Romans 2:11 KJV

  24. 20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

Through Christ we are invited, encouraged and empowered to stand before Him. To worship Him. That’s what we were made to do!

Revelation 4:11 – Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

However, Who can stand before God and argue with Him?

Ps. 76:7 Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry? (KJV)

    1 Timothy 6:16(MSG)
13-16 I’m charging you before the life-giving God and before Christ, who took his stand before Pontius Pilate and didn’t give an inch: Keep this command to the letter, and don’t slack off. Our Master, Jesus Christ, is on his way. He’ll show up right on time, his arrival guaranteed by the Blessed and Undisputed Ruler, High King, High God. He’s the only one death can’t touch, his light so bright no one can get close. He’s never been seen by human eyes—human eyes can’t take him in! Honor to him, and eternal rule! Oh, yes.

  25. 1 Samuel 6:19 (NLT)
    The Ark Moved to Kiriath-Jearim
19 But the Lord killed seventy men from Beth-shemesh because they looked into the Ark of the Lord. And the people mourned greatly because of what the Lord had done.

Do we really believe the word of the Lord?

The Levites had a strict program of memorization, and bible study. They made sure they understood and knew the scriptures. However for some reason they mistakenly forgot the part about death coming to those who look into the ark. Numbers 4:20

I think that we get ourselves into a mess when we forget what this is all about. God is holy! All powerful and absolutely sovereign. He is the judge and our king. We need to give ourselves a reality check sometimes and recognize who he truly is.

The Holy Ghost is the literal spirit of almighty God within us. It is greater than the ark of the covenant. Yet many times we forget how holy it is, how powerful it is, and how we should be reverent and respectful to this beautiful gift.

We should remember to not grieve the Holy Ghost. We do this but letting our mouths get out of hand. This is his temple. We are not our own but bought with a price.

    Ephesians 4:29-30 (Message)
29 Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.
30 Don’t grieve God. Don’t break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don’t take such a gift for granted.

  26. 5 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

6 And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her.

  27. 4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

  28. 1 Samuel 6:12, “And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.”

My thought is that “if God can make the pathway of these cows straight, so that they don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left, He can do the same thing for us.” If we keep our eyes on Jesus and look to Him, trusting in Him, leaning on His understanding, and acknowledge Him in all our ways, then He will make our pathway straight too. Our steps will be ordered of the LORD.

  29. 20. And the men of Beth-she’-mesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us? 21. And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kir’-jath-je’-a-rim, saying, The Phil’-is-tines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you. REVIVAL !!!!

  30. 9 but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh, then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”

Some people need to see what God can do. With this revival we can show them how God pours out blessings and miracles.

  31. “Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is. And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.”
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭9:18-19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Sometimes people will be on a everyday walk. And stumble upon a dilemma and may need console. So they need wisdom from an elder. So they go to the man of God not knowing that God has more in store for them that they don’t even know about yet

Saul was looking for help. God allowed him to find help and much more.
Sometimes God will those that are not even looking or seeking help from God. Always be ready and willing.

  32. 2 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
You know sometimes we get distracted and we end up on the wrong path. We need need to make sure we stay focused on God plan for us. Don’t go unless God says go!

  33. 1 Samuel 6:19 But God struck down some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy of them to death because they looked into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them.

    Curiosity killed the cat!

Traditionally the Ark of the Lord was set in the center of the Holy of Holy’s. The priest was the only one that go in to this place and minister. Everyone in Israel knows this, they are brought with this in there culture. Yet these 70 people thought the could deceive God.

Why do you do we think we can get away with doing things we know we should not do? Especially those raised in a apostolic home. Then we wonder why we are walking around spiritual dead. Let us not be deceived into thinking we can get away with it, repent and rekindle our relationship with Christ.

  34. 19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

Unable to move past ones curiosity cause them to die. You see once we encounter the presence or glory of God we also encounter His Word and judgement.

We pray we want to see His Glory but we must understand that his glory and judgement come together. Yet we have hope, that when we walk in obedience and integrity we have nothing to fear.

    1 Peter 4:17
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

It started with God judging Eli’s house.

  35. 4“What sort of guilt offering should we send?” they asked. And they were told, “Since the plague has struck both you and your five rulers, make five gold tumors and five gold rats, just like those that have ravaged your land.

How funny, a guilt offering of rats & tumors. I can understand the Israelites joy of seeing the Ark again, but they probably had joy for the golden images also. Thus leading to the worshipping of golden idols. Rats represent uncleanliness and carrying contagious diseases, just like sin.
Lets be careful of what comes into our lives.

  36. Even though the Philistines meant well with the return of the ark they still messed with Gods holy place. It doesn’t matter if your intentions are good or not, God is going to judge the actions. Sin is sin even if you have good intentions. Part of GROWing up is learning to take responsibility for your actions.

  37. Emerods are burns, sores, or boils. This means that the people made golden statues of their sores. They also golden rats for the mice that plagued them. This sounds disgusting, but it had value because it showed the things that happened to these people.

Not everything that happens with God are kittens and roses, but it is all worth remembering. We have to seek after God through the good and the bad. We all need to remember that bad things and good things, all things work together.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:28‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  38. Everything that is God’s is holy. You can’t force the power of God into your life. God will freely give it, if you’re ready to freely accept it.

  39. It was a common practice for the culture to send penance to rectify their wrong. In this example, they brought their own version of a peace offering. It took them long enough to do it though.

  40. 21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the Lord; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Philistines are scared of the Lord. Here the arc is tossed around they don’t respect it at all .

  41. 19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

God was cleaning house in Israel, and showing by example that “good intentions” do not substitute for reverence for Him and His ways. There are many flavors of religion these days that call themselves Christian, yet among even sincere worshippers there is a grave lack of respect for God’s Word and ways among congregations of our world. Scriptures are contorted or simply removed from the Bible, and “good intentions” replace reverence and obedience to His truth.

    John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

It doesn’t matter how sincere or well intentioned we may be in our actions, if we trespass God’s established way, we are found outside His covenant. He would also say:

    John 10:1
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

While this initially refers to Him being the true Shepherd, saying that any other who try to come around a way other than the door of the sheep-fold are proved to be false and not Him, we can take another principle; Jesus said there’s one baptism, one faith, one church. It’s through His name, and only through that name, of Jesus that we must be saved, and any who come up any other way only prove that they do not belong in the sheep-fold with the sheep but are trespassing. No matter how well-intentioned an individual is, intentions don’t get us to heaven. Intentions don’t wash away sin and forever them for eternity, allowing us to stand justified before God at judgement. Intentions don’t stand before the mouth of hell and allow souls to have an advocate with the Father that we might repent and make Heaven our eternal destination. While good intentions may give us the opportunity to hear God’s voice calling out for the hungry to come to Him and learn of His ways, it does not automatically justify us before Him.

Who can stand before God and say that their intentions mean more than His holy judgement? How can go out at reason with Him? As Job was answered by God in the whirlwind, who are we—so frail and our lives here so fleeting—who are we to go to reason before God and instruct Him in righteousness? If we want to be accepted before Him and partake in His life, we must come up by His way, through His truth.
