1 Samuel 8

1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.

3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.

7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.

11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.

19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.

22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

  1. Verses 19-20 MSG “But the people wouldn’t listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We will have a king to rule us! Then we’ll be just like all the other nations. Our king will rule us and lead us and fight our battles.” Wanting to be like everybody else and fit in is a dangerous place to be in this world. We (POFW) as the people of God must be different, stand out and stay true to our God. My God rules and reigns over ALL.

  2. 1 Samuel 8:7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.

Unfortunately in these lasts days that we are living in people are living for the lust of the fresh. Allowing these fleshly things to dictate there motives, passions, purpose, and time. They give them some much importance that they have dominion over them like a king did over Israel.

We need to put off these carnal desires and give God the place that He desires to have in our lives. To prosper His people and give them what they desire, if we would only forsake our ways and repent, and serve Him, he would fight our battles and give us life.

  3. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.

7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Samuel didn’t get bent out of shape when the men of Israel came to him. He just prayed. The LORD reminded him that they didn’t not reject Samuel. They rejected GOD. They wanted something they could see to fight only their physical battles for them because they were walking in their flesh. They couldn’t see or comprehend what they were truly asking. They were asking to not have the sovereign God to rule over them and cover them. They wanted to be uncovered. When faced with decisions in life be aware of the spiritual consequences.

  4. “In spite of what Samuel said, the people refused to listen to him. “No!” they said. “We want a king to rule over us. Then we’ll be like all of the other nations. We’ll have a king to lead us. He’ll go out at the head of our armies and fight our battles.” Samuel heard everything the people said. He told the Lord about it. The Lord answered, “Listen to them. Give them a king.” Then Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Each of you go back to your own town.””
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭8:19-22‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Lord I pray my desire would always be toward you. A desire for you to be King of my life.

  5. “Do everything they say to you,” the LORD replied, “for they are rejecting me, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer.

But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. (‭1 Samuel‬ ‭8‬:‭7, 19‬ NLT)

What a terrible place to be in. Living life according to your own ways, not living in obedience to the word of GOD, and not wanting to submit to the man of God that has been placed over your life.

When tragedy happens in your life, it’s because of your own lustful desires of the flesh and the mind that you’re willing to follow.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭16‬ KJV)

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭2‬ KJV)

His plan for our lives is and will always be perfect!!!

  6. 7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

You need to be careful and not choose the voice of man over the voice of God. They did not need a king but they wanted one because they did not want to be lead by a man of God. And as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.

  7. 1 As Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons to be judges over Israel. 2 Joel and Abijah, his oldest sons, held court in Beersheba. 3 But they were not like their father, for they were greedy for money. They accepted bribes and perverted justice.

Once again, just because sons/daughters come from a home that worshiped God, had parents who set the example, doesn’t mean your sons/daughters will follow suit. Samuel knew his sons probably would not make the best judges, and allowed them to continue and accept bribes.

We need men, sons and fathers that will stand up for what is morally right. Just because its a family member, we do not give in and accept a son/daughter ways of sin. Continue to love them, but continue to reject their behavior.

  8. JESUS today YOU will SAVE me.

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

Sometimes a thing we think is a good idea should be left in our bank….they wanted a kKing, because they didn’twant to be obedient, if were not gonna be obedient to God himself and the man of God he put in our life, how can we ever think well be obedient to anyone else! There are no loop holes, either were obedient or we burn!

James 4:17 “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

    2 Cor. 7:9-10 (NET)
7:9 Now I rejoice, not because you were made sad, but because you were made sad to the point of repentance. For you were made sad as God intended, so that you were not harmed in any way by us. 10 For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death

  9. One KING above all kings:

7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

The children of Israel were hardheaded. You would think after all the generational cursing they had put on themselves; that they would learn. That’s how it is today; people haven’t got the understanding that all worldliness is distractions. They treat money as a god; that is not where I want to be at. Jesus is my GOD and there will never be none before HIM again. HE is my one and only KING.

Isa 43:10-11 Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.

1Co 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

    Thank you Jesus……Amen!!!

  10. iLove to Grow in the Word

1 Samuel 8:6-7 NLT Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the LORD for guidance. (7) “Do everything they say to you,” the LORD replied, “for it is me they are rejecting, not you. They don’t want Me to be their king any longer.

When a person goes to the man of God and asks for approval for an action, request, or relationship contrary to the Word and contrary to the advice of the pastor, God will sometimes grant the request of the people just as He does in this verse. We must be careful when we ask such requests for it is to our best interest and safety to be in the will of God and not in the will of our flesh.

  11. The wold will take more than you ever want to give it.

11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

If we are not in the will of God then we are in the world. When we make decisions on our own without consulting Jesus in prayer it is dangerous for this very reason. Gods plan is for us to have such a relationship with him that we hear his voice continually so that we know that we know that we are doing his will. When we step out on our own we are taking a gamble on our future. We make kings in our lives all the time but don’t realize it. Let us make him King today and see how far he will take us

  12. THE DANGER OF HAVING IT YOUR WAY

For whatever reasons we may demand or deem our own way, we are wise to first evaluate the cost involved. Israel thought because Samuel was old and growing weaker physically and that his sons were not after GOD like their father that they should secure their own king to judge them.

Samuels instinct and conviction was to fight for the rights of GOD and HIS Kingdom, however, Israel was determined to have it their way. The people pressed GOD and HIS messenger to yield to their desire. However the response of GOD is dangerous.

Verse 7 revives the Fear of the LORD in my heart.
7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

THE DANGER OF HAVING IT YOUR WAY is, in doing so we REJECT GOD. We tell JESUS that he is not our God. Be very prayerful if you have to continually pressure GOD or your Pastor to have something your way. You may be pressing your way out to the favor and Kingdom of GOD.

You may get your way, but at the expense of the covering of GOD.

    “NOT worth IT”!

  13. “And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.”
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭8:18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s dangerous when a man or a people or even a country long for something more. They turn from God and desire other things and refuse to hear the voice of God.

God still promised us that if we call on his name and if we pray and humble ourselves. He will heal our land.

  14. 1 Samuel 8:6-7 (NLT)
    6) Samuel was displeased with their request and went to the LORD for guidance.
    7) “Do everything they say to you,” the LORD replied, “for it is me they are rejecting, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer.”

This made me think of St. Luke 10:16 (NLT)
“Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone rejecting me is rejecting God, who sent me.”

As a witness for Jesus, it hurts sometimes when we feel like people are rejecting what we have to say, but we must remember what Pastor has taught us, “It’s not you theyre rejecting. It’s God they’re rejecting.”

  15. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.

7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

There comes a time when the Lord steps back because the people chose a different path then what He would want for them, but He will not transgress their will. However, when He gives us what we want, He doesn’t have to come to our rescue to get us out of the mess we got ourselves into either.

Proverbs 16:7 – When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace.

The benefits of choosing the path the Lord plans for you also provides for better relationships in every aspect of your life.

  16. 18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
    19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

After Samuel describes this king by saying ‘He will take…, He will take…, the people still choose a king. Despite the cost of a king, they desire a man to fight their battles and not God. Man can be manipulated, become greedy, but not God. I want my victory and blessings to come through the almighty God of Heaven, not man.

  17. “And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.” The word of God (Jesus) clearly declares “the Lord will not hear you in that day”. One would be very wise to look around and ask self, are we truly better off as a Nation. Dear God, open our eyes and ears so that we may clearly hear you. May God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  18. “That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.” The Lord was kind to all when he walked in human form; however he did not conform to sin. God help us to walk, speak, and treat others as you did (real Christian), in Jesus name.

  19. 19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said.
20 “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.” (NLT)

As children of God we are called to stand out. I pray that we are always noticeably different in the way we walk and talk; that God’s love shines through us and touches the hearts of those around us.

  20. 11. “This is how a king will reign over you,” Samuel said. “The king will draft your sons and assign them to his chariots and his charioteers, making them run before his chariots.
    12. Some will be generals and captains in his army, some will be forced to plow in his fields and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and chariot equipment.
    13. The king will take your daughters from you and force them to cook and bake and make perfumes for him.
    14. He will take away the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his own officials.
    15. He will take a tenth of your grain and your grape harvest and distribute it among his officers and attendants.
    16. He will take your male and female slaves and demand the finest of your cattle and donkeys for his own use.
    17. He will demand a tenth of your flocks, and you will be his slaves.

    18. When that day comes, you will beg for relief from this king you are demanding, but then the LORD will not help you.”

    The cost of disobedience…
Before you demand your own way or desires, make sure you have counted the cost and realize the consequences; they may not come overnight, but they will come.

  21. 19 Nev ertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
this chapter is scary because of the rebellious nature of God’s people it’s hard to understand after all that God did for them how they can allow themselves to seek after their own human flesh. God has already done everything that they ever asked yet already gave the Miracles he had already gave the mighty deliverances and instead of being thankful with that they decided to seek after the desire of the flesh. God help us not to go our own way and seek the desires of the flesh. God help us not to get selfish and our desires but to be grateful for you and everything that you have done in our lives and never forget you

  22. Be careful what you ask for!!!

5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

When God sends a warning or just says no to your prayer be very careful for what you ask for because you might finish in slavery of your own request. We may not always agree with God’s way but His ways are and always will be PERFECT. Yes, He did say He will give us the desires of our hearts but first you must read the beginning for Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
So clearly we MUST delight ourselves in the Lord and then He will give us the desires of our heart. Delight comes from obedience, submission to our God and Savior.

  23. 1 Samuel 8:7 (Modern English Version)
7 The Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in relation to all that they say to you. For it is not you they have rejected, but Me they have rejected from reigning over them.

When we refuse to allow the Lord to rule and govern over us someone else will. The enemy or the world will sit on the throne of our life. We cannot just leave the seat vacant. Jesus said come into me and I will give you rest. My burden is easy and my yoke is light. In jesus is true freedom and liberty!

  24. 11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

  25. 22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king.

The people were rebellious. They wanted their way and not Gods way. We can beg God fir something until He finally gives in but if it turns out bad then we turn right around and blame God and ask Him why He allowed such and such. When I reality we were the ones who had harped and harped til God finally gives in. We must seek Gods will and not our own will. When we yield everything to God and let Him take control we must put our self in neutral. Because in neutral then we allow God to steer us in His direction and not our own. Lord help me to stay in neutral and allow you to lead me and allow my pastor guide me. Thank you God for great leaders and for your guidance even when we don’t understand. Jesus I want you to always be My King the Lord of my heart.

  26. Everything Samuel warned them about in regards to a king ended up coming to pass over the course of the monarchy. What they didn’t find in Saul they would find in the Kings after.

  27. When you’re trying to lead a group of people towards a Christ like lifestyle don’t feel bad if they ignore you. It’s not always you they are rejecting, it’s God. Stay humble, patient, and obedient.

  28. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

Becareful what you ask for…you may just get it. How can some one who does not consult with God request or demand things..? Well it happens all the time and we see here how they wanted fo be like the rest of the world. The issue wasnt that they would not have anybody to judge or go to battle for them…it was and still is that people do not want to obey. If people really obeyd the commandments and precepts of the Lord and live by His word and Spirit there would be no need for judge. The word of God says against such things, the fruit of the Spirit, there is no law. It would be wise to have the time to seek God over a matter before we just go asking. We dont want to end up rejecting him and just end up suffering with what we wanted.

  29. 3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

The actions of Samuel’s sons was reminiscent of the actions of Eli’s sons. It would seem from the lack of God’s judgment that perhaps Samuel, in contrast to Eli, honored God in a way Eli failed to do despite his sons’ failings, but beyond that it seems to reveal the impact that an environment can have on a child. The actions of Eli’s sons made men abhor the offering of the Lord because of how they perverted the ministering of the sacrifices, and their sins where known among all the people. Even after Eli and his sons died in judgment, the atmosphere that they cultivated didn’t simply vanish from among the people. The chapters following their deaths show a continued spiritual “depression” of sorts and the people of Israel continued to struggle greatly to with positioning themselves to thrive spiritually. This atmosphere perhaps prevailed even throughout the days of Samuel’s life as highlighted in this chapter that instead of desiring spiritual leadership, his sons and the people reached for earthly, dictatorial leadership instead. This was placed in their hearts to such an extent that God told Samuel to proceed with making them a king as they requested. The attitude of bitterness, broken spirituality, perverted judgment, and anarchy against godly leadership set the stage for spiritual struggle in Israel. Children are designed to be affected by their home environment for the rest of their lives. God designed them to be taught by their family unit about having proper relationships, loving others genuinely, what a godly marriage is supposed to look like, how to resolve disputes and wrongs, how to grow in grace and worship God, along with so many other things. The problem is that these positive lessons are often times not only absent from homes but are outright replaced by ungodliness. But just because there isn’t godly teaching the way Jesus intended doesn’t mean children stop absorbing what is around them. We see brokenness passing from generation to generation because of a broken environment leading to children learning to perpetuate brokenness into their own homes as adults, even if they deeply despised their home situation as children. Children were designed to revert back to the examples and teachings that came from their family, and it seems the overall “family of Israel” in this chapter had absorbed and perpetuated ungodly ways and expectations. Having wholeness in God doesn’t end with repentance but continues our entire lives through the process of sanctification working within us. A better future for those coming after us starts with us right now, not when they arrive later down the road. Praise God for the opportunity to be delivered, set free, healed, and made whole in Him that we can do more through Him than we ever could in our own fleshly power!

    Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

  30. “But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.””
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭8:19-20‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What a sad day it is when the church would rather be like the world around us, then the church that God has called it to be.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”
    ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Impacting lives to change the world.
we are called. Chosen. We have a city to win!

  31. “And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.”(‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭8:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬)

It does not appear that Samuel’s two sons were so profane and vicious as Eli’s sons but they wereJoel and Abijah, sinned before God by seeking dishonest gain and perverting justices.

  32. They also turned aside after lucre.Samuel took no bribes, but his sons did, and then they perverted judgment.Seeing that Samuel’s judgeship could not be passed down to his sons, the elders of Israel demanded a king (1 Samuel 8:1–5). Samuel’s initial reaction to their demand was one of great displeasure, and he prayed to God about the matter.

  33. 7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

We need to make sure we are doing Gods will and not our own will. Don’t play with the things of God, but let us be vessels for the Lord and listen, obey, follow, keep, and cherish Gods commands.

  34. The old saying goes “Be careful what you ask for because you just might get it.” The people ask for a king and they get one- but not before being warned exactly what a king will require of them. He knows that once the kind of king that they are asking for gains power he will not rely on the Lord who put him on his place. Instead of being a special separated nation devoted into the Lord they want to be like all the other pagan nations. So the Israelites enslave themselves to a king, who will give heavy taxes and require services of their children -a king who might be unresponsive to God- instead of devoting themselves to the King of kings and cares ultimately for them.

  35. 4. So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5. They said to him, ” You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” 6. But when they said, ” Give us a king to lead us, ” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. Prayer is the only way !!!!
