1 Samuel 18

1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.

3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.

7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

12 And Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul.

13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.

15 Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.

16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the Lord’s battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

19 But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

20 And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.

22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.

23 And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.

25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law: and the days were not expired.

27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

28 And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

  1. The beginning of this chapter spoke to me about true friendship and having your brothers back. We are to build up, hold up and pray up each other, not bring any one down for any reason.

The middle of the chapter talks about Saul’s obsession with getting rid of David. He becomes fearful of him as he sees that God is with him in all that he does. David never becomes puffed up with his victories; but, is still humbled from his beginnings.

The end of the chapter shows us how Saul’s obsession with David now turns into hate. We cannot allow jealousy or fearfulness take hold of us as Saul did.

  2. 25. And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

    27. Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

What the enemy means to use to destroy you, God can use to bless you.

  3. 26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law: and the days were not expired.

He did not waste any time going to obtain that which he longed to possess. If there is an offer on the table, there is no telling how long it will be there. Make haste in fulfilling the obligations so that you may be rewarded with what you sought after.

  4. 29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

Don’t let fear, intimidation, jealousy, envy, or hatred stir up in you against brethren for the things the Lord is doing in their lives but rejoice for we all need each other. We are the body of Christ that needs to stay united, strong, and determined to serve the Lord no matter what. We need one another to reach this region. When we are united Jesus will lead the way!!!!

16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.Do not be conceited.Romans 12:16

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 1 Cor 1:10

  5. Women! Sheesh!!

These women started a war between Saul and David. No telling how history may have been written if these “busy bodies” behaved themselves.

Cool you jets women… I am attempting to be funny. However there is truth in it; for everyone not just women. Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. The people of the world we live in today are seeking someone to blame for the predicament they find themselves in; it cannot be their own fault – someone else must be at fault.

  6. WISDOM LEADS

14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.
15 Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.
16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

GOD honors WISDOM. Davids behavior was the influencing factor with GOD. David, who went from field keeper to hero, refused to fall prey to celebrity temptations. His behavior which includes his attitude and choices proved his commitment to his GOD. The LORD was with him; when we behave ourselves widely in all our ways we ensure that the presence of the LORD is with us and that is what attracts people to GOD.

When we allow others to see the wisdom, power and favor of GOD on our lives through our decisions. 3 important things happen.

    1. GOD is evident with us; HIS FAVOR prefers us
    2. Peers and even other leaders become jealous and fearful
    3. People who follow will love; respect, appreciate and support

Life is not perfect for those that behave themselves wisely, however there are many benefits to following the LORD and allowing the WORD of GOD (JESUS) and the SPIRIT of GOD (JESUS) to influence our daily choices of where we go, what we do and how we act.

  7. 25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies.

  8. First Samuel 18 :6 when the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing with joyful songs and with a trimble and lyres. As they danced they sang Saul has slain his thousands and David his ten thousands Saul was very angry he is refrain displeased him greatly. They have credited David with tens of thousands he thought but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom? And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word

10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

Every word of prophecy is not from God. Here we have Saul prophesying through an evil spirit. The Word says to “try” the spirits to see if its of God.

  10. 28 A nd saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

Saul could not accept that God was with David even though he clearly knew it. As a result he became afraid and grew up to contempt and hatred for David. Instead of rejoicing with him instead of being on his side and helping him instead turn on him and as a result eventually he destroyed his own family. Hatred envy and strife never gets you anywhere it’s better to be partnered with people that God loves and work with them than to hate them then maybe you can be blessed in the same manner that they are.

  11. 14 David continued to succeed in everything he did, for the Lord was with him. (NLT)

David was a humble servant. There’s not a time in this chapter that we see him boast and purposefully enrage Saul with his successes. If we can keep our eyes and heart focused on God, if we can learn to humbly serve in obedience, the Lord will be with us and we too can be successful with the Lord on our side.

  12. A Kindred Spirit

1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

A kindred spirit, the perfect friend two souls knit together by God. Some one that feels what you feel. God brings them into our lives to teach us, help us, correct us, and be close to us a brother, a sister, and the best friend. Bless our kindred spirit. In Jesus Name Amen

  13. Your attitude creates opportunity.

30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

It was because David was wise with how he presented himself that got him favor with the people. How do you react to situations? Does it show the love of God, or does it show the fleshly side of humanity. Be wise in your actions and words. The people are watching.

  14. 28 And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

Let your works speak for themselves

  15. 5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

David behaved himself wisely. Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment. It doesnt say here but I can imagine that David remembered what he had been taught growing up in the Lord. The princples, laws, commandments, precepts statutes are all keys yo having success in life. The Word of God is what will bless you in your life. In it we find life

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
    Proverbs 1:7 NKJV

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
    2 Timothy 3:16

  16. 29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

As the body of Chirist we are all here to serve God and reach his people. This is something we cannot do if we let envy, fear and jealousy step in and divide us. To truly reach this city we have to have unity!!

  17. I Samuel 18:14, “And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways, and the LORD was with him.”

The scripture that came to mind as I read this is Ephesians 5:15, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.”

We have to be careful how we behave or conduct ourselves. We must do it with wisdom.

  18. 28 And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.
God was with David the whole entire time, sometimes we may become fearful of what others may think about your position that God has place you in. The bottom line is that no one else can stop you from God’s plan, even if they trying to prevent you from opportunities, and may even try to kill you. God is able to keep you and his work will be fullfilled.

  19. 2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.

3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

Saul was okay with David killing the giant, because it made the people favor Saul as king because they had been victorious. However, when the people began to give more honor to David than Saul, Saul’s attitude changed and he hated David and plotted to use him to benefit himself.

It’s amazing how someone can rejoice with someone who is promoted, but when they arise above you, can you still be happy for them? When their church grows bigger than yours can you rejoice? When they baptize more or more are filled with HG in a week can we rejoice?

God is watching our response and we must be conscious of how we respond to every situation as well.

  20. 1 Samuel 18:8 (KJV Strong’s)
8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

When David was a being honored by the people the spirit of jealousy rose in Saul’s heart.

Saul admired, lived for, and sought after the applause, and laudation of the public.

Since his fame, and popularity were being threatened he himself was thrown into a tail spin.

His foundation was on the people and not on God.

When we build our house on the wrong thing the storms of life will topple us. I learned through growing up in church, backsliding, and returning that I couldn’t base my relationship on God on anything but him.

    Matthew 6:33 (KJV Strong’s)
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

  21. 28 When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and how much his daughter Michal loved him, 29 Saul became even more afraid of him, and he remained David’s enemy for the rest of his life.

Saul continued to let his pride rule over him. Instead of going to David, being humble and asking for forgiveness from him, he would rather hold a grudge against David. Jealousy and pride will lead you to your own destruction.

  22. “And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.” The word of God (Jesus) identified Saul’s deceptiveness. One may fool another; however one will never fool the Judge (Jesus). Dear God, have your way with any that would be deceptive. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  23. “And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.” David did as he was supposed to do, which made it all the harder for Saul. We must simply be wise and do what is right, for life is but a moment and too short to worry about things that do not matter. God help us that we would seek you all the more as your return draws nearer, in Jesus name.

  24. v14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

Everyone has the power to act any way he wishes, to make any choices that he desires, but the wise person knows that only tight choices result in righteous conquences.
When we’re righteous there’s no need to fear .The LORD IS with us ,and HIS pure wisdom brings peace and good fruits.

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of Mercy and good fruits, without partially, and without hypocrisy.

  25. 10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

Sometimes the devil is not the one to blame and God puts us through things to provesus an make us into who were meant to be

  26. 25. And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines

When people you look up to intentionally hurt you….

  27. “When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and how much his daughter Michal loved him, Saul became even more afraid of him, and he remained David’s enemy for the rest of his life. Every time the commanders of the Philistines attacked, David was more successful against them than all the rest of Saul’s officers. So David’s name became very famous.”
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭18:28-30‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What the enemy has meant for evil, God can turn it around for the good.

  28. Jealousy can cause you to do some crazy things. David was a man after God’s heart. Saul did not like the attention David was getting. When you’re following God’s way you will have others after you. No matter what comes our way, God is able to keep us.

  29. 7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

Even if it’s praising, we need to be careful with the words we use so not to give the spirit of division a foot hold in our lives or in the church.

  30. 8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

Saul’s attitude and jealousy towards God’s blessing on David is what changed everything in this scripture. It wasn’t until Saul’s attitude soured towards that the evil spirit came upon Saul. It was Saul’s jealousy that brought a tormenting spirit on him.

When we let attitudes such as jealousy, envy, strife towards a brother, greed or selfishness enter our lives, it becomes an open door for the enemy to come in and take over. Suddenly our mind becomes clouded with thoughts that are not are own and we start to think evil thoughts that maybe we won’t have thought of before. A attitude that changes away from God, removes ourselves from his protection and allows other spirits to come into our lives and torment us. Don’t let your jealousy over someone elses blessing keep you away from yours.

  31. 30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

God i thank you for this word!

  32. 1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

A good friend loves his or her fellow friend as him or herself. Friendship at times can be a gift of pure bliss and others a gift of pure torture. David will later find this out. A good friend loves at all times.

  33. Fear not a man; but the LORD your GOD!!!

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

Saul feared that which he didn’t understand at first. He saw David as a threat; not as the man of GOD placed before him. We tend to fear that which we don’t understand. When I first started going back to church in 2012; I had a lot of questions that nobody could seem to answer. I had my doubts and fears, because I didn’t quite understand what was going on. Now that I’m rooted in a good church and have a great man of GOD set before me. A lot of those questions have been answered just from stopping and listening to all the leaders. Wake up people the answers are right before our eyes; all that we have to do is open them up and not let fear cloud us; or our heart. Let go of the fear that is holding you back and let GOD begin to work through your struggles.

    Thank you Jesus……Amen!!!

  34. When jealous is left unchecked, it can turn in to hate. This happened to Saul and we read the continual fall of a man who was once esteemed with honor.

  35. In this chapter much plotting and scheming was being conducted to devise hurt. But, a clear evidential thing occurred here in which it displayed that God was with David. My question is this, is there enough evidence that God is with us too?

“Evidence enough to prove us guilty of being a Christian”

  36. What Saul thought was going to be a setup for David’s demise turned into yet another victory in the face of adversity for David.

If God be for us then who could be against us?

If it’s Gods will you have no need to worry about the battle just hang in there and fight. God doesn’t lose.

  37. 1 Samuel 18:7 As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”

As a leader you can not get jealous or upset if your disciple out does you. It should challenge you instead of upset you. You should always out due, everyone in worship, praise, offering, faithfulness, etc. Set the bar in the stratosphere, that will give you limitless followers and disciples that hold no reserve in there worship, praise, giving, faithfulness, etc.

A strong leader develops others not hinders them.

    David vs Saul

  38. “And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.(‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭18:14‬ ‭KJV)

If we can behave ourselves like David behaved himself and make our own decision wisely in all the ways that we could think of and see then the lord Jesus Christ would fulfill our desires that he thinks would fit for his kingdom.

  39. Whether an evil spirit was sent or allowed to torment Saul. The writer of 1 Samuel simply states that the evil spirit is “from God” recognizing Gods control over everything. This evil spirit may find a place within Saul because he has ignored God, creating a spiritual void within himself that leaves room for an evil spirit to enter. Or Saul’s increasing awareness that his sim has caused Gods blessing to leave him may have caused his extreme torment characterized by an evil spirit. Even when it all sounds distressing it’s comforting to know that evil spirits are under Gods control and do not function within this world except under his divine authority.

  40. What a friendship to have that you value your friend even like your own life.

“And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭18:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬
