1 Samuel 27

1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.

4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.

5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.

9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.

10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.

12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.

  1. iLove to Grow in the Word

1Samuel 27:11 NLT No one was left alive to come to Gath and tell where he had really been. This happened again and again while he was living among the Philistines. 12Achish believed David and thought to himself, “By now the people of Israel must hate him bitterly. Now he will have to stay here and serve me forever!”

These scriptures reveal to me that David was a man with weaknesses just as other men. The fact that he deceived Achish by lying to him shows his weaknesses. The fact that he was still fighting for Israel while living with the pagans shows his loyalty. The fact that David was greatly blessed is undeniable, but the fact that lying is acceptable is inexcusable. Just because David lied does not give us a license to deceive folks.

  2. “So David and his 600 men left Israel. They went to Achish, the king of Gath. He was the son of Maoch.”
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭27:2‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Just a few chapters before David started out with 400 men and now he has 600. David has gained influence.

  3. Verse 5 AMP says “Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your sight, let me be given a place [of my own] in one of the cities in the country, so that I may live there; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” The favor of the Lord was evident in David’s life. I pray for that favor to be upon POFW.

  4. And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand. (‭1 Samuel‬ ‭27‬:‭1‬ KJV)

Don’t live life by your emotions, it can get you into deep trouble.
…’out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.’

Why is it that we allow our hearts to be deceptive towards our own selves?
We need to definitely have the mind of Christ and always be led of the Spirit of GOD. LORD help me!!

  5. Smarter than a serpent

Matthew 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

Sometimes we must trick the enemy into believing something although you are still fighting for our God. Here David is playing what we call in the military “the devil’s advocate” a strategy to make believe your enemy you are doing him a favor when in reality you are destroying his reign from right under him. David will never leave His God for anyone not harm the Israelites, he lied to the king so he wouldn’t noticed he was working against him. Lord help us to be wise as a serpent but gentle like a dove. That way we may anticipate the actions of our enemy. In Jesus Name Amen

  6. 8. And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.

    10. And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

If you have to lie to cover up what you are doing, you probably need to question if you are really doing the right thing.

  7. 10-11 Achish would ask, “And whom did you raid today?” David would tell him, “Oh, the Negev of Judah,” or “The Negev of Jerahmeel,” or “The Negev of the Kenites.” He never left a single person alive lest one show up in Gath and report what David had really been doing. This is the way David operated all the time he lived in Philistine country. (MSG)

David covered his lies by insuring not a single person lived to expose the truth. At what cost are you willing to lie? I pray not a high one, but we are only human and times will come when we face decisions to be fully honest or not.

  8. 8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.

  9. 1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

It’s important to pray and wait on the Lord before making important decisions. In this case, David didn’t do that.

  10. TAKE NO PRISONERS

As christian believers there are certain areas and situations in our lives that must be DESTROYED not just damaged. David elected to TAKE NO PRISONERS so that none could testify against him.

    MSG
8-9 From time to time David and his men raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites—these people were longtime inhabitants of the land stretching toward Shur and on to Egypt. When David raided an area he left no one alive, neither man nor woman, but took everything else: sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels, clothing—the works. Then he’d return to Achish.
10-11 Achish would ask, “And whom did you raid today?”
David would tell him, “Oh, the Negev of Judah,” or “The Negev of Jerahmeel,” or “The Negev of the Kenites.” He never left a single person alive lest one show up in Gath and report what David had really been doing. This is the way David operated all the time he lived in Philistine country.

We should not give our past sins an opportunity to testify against us by allowing them place in our lives to influence or speak to us.

    KJV
Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27 Neither give place to the devil.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

    MSG
Ephesians 4:26-27 Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry—but don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don’t stay angry. Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the Devil that kind of foothold in your life.
28 Did you use to make ends meet by stealing? Well, no more! Get an honest job so that you can help others who can’t work.

TAKE NO PRISONERS and keep no memories, entertain no opportunities and give NO PLACE to the devil.

John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

  11. Where am I going?

Sometimes, we know our where God wants us to be. We believe the prophecy that was told to us but most of the time, the timing of these prophecies is not our time line. God’s timing is always perfect but most of the time does not match our timing. David was promised to be King. However, he respected Saul enough not to take his life – several occasions. So, David is waiting on God.

Psalm 37:7-9 Quiet down before God, be prayerful before him. Don’t bother with those who climb the ladder, who elbow their way to the top. Bridle your anger, trash your wrath, cool your pipes—it only makes things worse. Before long the crooks will be bankrupt; God-investors will soon own the store.

  12. 4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him. Just like that the story of Saul chasing David ends. From that point on he left David alone but as we all know so had many battles to fight himself. What this proves is that no matter how much we think that the situation will never be over no matter how afraid we are of our adversary at some point or another if we stay faithful to God who will win the battle. David won his battle very quietly in this verse but this ended years of being chased and hunted by Saul. but because David had followed after God and did what was right God honored it.

  13. 11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.

12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.

  14. 11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.

  15. 5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

David sought to discover if he had found favor with Achish, and it was proven by Achish giving him Ziglag to live in. When you have a heart after and desire relationship with the Lord as David did, even when people rise up against you, God still provides and takes care of you.

When a mans ways please the Lord He will cause your enemies to be at peace with you.

  16. 11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.

David chooses to live deceptively in the land of the Phillistines. He is still on the side of the his people but is still being deceptive about it. Be sure our sins will find you out! It’s best to repent and have them under the blood than still there waiting to be discovered.

  17. 1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath

Stop running from your problem and face them

  18. 1But David kept thinking to himself, “Someday Saul is going to get me. The best thing I can do is escape to the Philistines. Then Saul will stop hunting for me in Israelite territory, and I will finally be safe.”

How fast David lost trust in the Lord. He would rather live among the enemy to feel comfortable. And he raids other villages to try and make it justifiable. All he had to do is continue and wait upon the Lord, and God will keep him safe from Saul.

  19. 1 Samuel 27:1 & 12 (NLT)
    1) (AND David said in his heart – kjv), But David kept thinking to himself, “Someday Saul is going to get me. The best thing I can do is escape to the Philistines. Then Saul will stop hunting for me in Israelite territory, and I will finally be safe.”
    12) Achish believed David and thought to himself, “By now the people of Israel must hate him bitterly. Now he will have to stay here and serve me forever!”

I found it amazing that David, a man after God’s own heart, and Achish, the enemy, both thought to himself. David thought that by going to escape in the enemies territory, he would be safe, and Achish, the enemy, was thinking that David would stay there and be his servant forever.

Wow! Be Careful what you speak in your heart or think to yourself. It could lead you to the enemies territory where you think you’ll be safe, and the enemy will be thinking that you are going to stay there and serve him forever.

As Pastor would say, “Get rid of Stink’in Think’in.”
THINK Yourself HAPPY! ENCOURAGE Yourself in the LORD!

“STAND fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Galatians 5:1

  20. 10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
A lie can get you into so much trouble. It doesn’t help you in any situation you will have to keep covering up the first lie and you end up telling anot her one after that and it keeps getting worse. Lord help us to be truthful in every situation.

  21. 1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

David fled from Saul out of fear of him losing his life at his hand. In his fear he sought refuge from achish A king of the philistines. Achish means I will terrify, or only a man. Achish could only give David what any man could, there was nothing super natural about him. God is our defense and refuge. Mankind can’t save us. When we are afraid, we should put our trust in God!

  22. 1 Samuel 27:1 (KJV Strong’s)

    1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines;

    That is not the answer!

In the bible the philistines represent the flesh. They are an enemy that is constantly at war with us and are never truly defeated. However no matter how hard life can be the answer just never be to give in to the flesh.

    Why?

    1. The flesh is enmity against God
    2. The flesh cannot be subject to the laws of God.
    3. Carnally mindedness is death.
    4. No flesh will glory in his presence.

Sure it may feel good but the pleasure will soon go away and we will find that we are miles away from the will of God.

Don’t go back to the philistines. Instead trust in God and he will give you the desires of your heart!

  23. 1 Samuel 27:1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

In the past we had been looking for a house to live in, most of the deals with nice houses and great pricing were in “bad neighborhoods” with bars on doors and windows. My wife was uncomfortable living there, so we were in a bind either choosing a nice house for good price in a bad area or nice house for high price in a good area.

David didn’t care about were he lived as long as he didn’t risk to go against his king. So he made a home in the mist of his adversaries to discourage his King to try to come ago at him. He didn’t remotely fear living surrounded by challenge because he knew God was with him.

What a mighty man of God!

  24. 12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.

Be careful what we have in or hearts… The devil only wants to destroy us and be against one another…. don’t give the devil a place for that. Were all working for the glory of God. Growing Gods Kingdom!!!!

  25. But David kept thinking to himself, “Someday Saul is going to get me. The best thing I can do is escape to the Philistines. Then Saul will stop hunting for me in Israelite territory, and I will finally be safe.”
    1 Samuel 27:1 NLT

In other instances we see David asking the Lord what should he do. Not the case this time. Instead he let his thouhhts determine his destination. We should be careful when having some sort of decision making especially if its something you are being bothered by. The enemy will flood your mind with firey darts and try to use fear against you. In tough situations we ahould analyze the situation, if given the time, and ask oursleves: where is this coming from?, how does it make me feel?, what does the word of God say about it?, and never for get to ask the Lord, pray for guidance.

  26. 1 But David kept thinking to himself, “Someday Saul is going to get me. The best thing I can do is escape to the Philistines. Then Saul will stop hunting for me in Israelite territory, and I will finally be safe.”

Don’t run away from your enemy. You already have the victory over the enemy and if God is with you you are safe in his arms! What a awesome God we serve!

  27. 1 But David kept thinking to himself, “Someday Saul is going to get me. The best thing I can do is escape to the Philistines. Then Saul will stop hunting for me in Israelite territory, and I will finally be safe.”

Don’t run away from your enemy. You already have the victory over the enemy and when God is with you he is your protector and there is nothing to fear! What a mighty God we serve!

  28. 1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

We cant live in defeat, it causes,us to make poor decisions, and do things that we know we should not do, we get caught up and tangled by thoughts that we entertain because we opened the door to sin one too many times and the enemy slips right on in, and then you become a slave to your own stinkin thinkin, your own condemnation, just because a person hasnt left the church or stopped working in their ministry that they are in dont mean they havent backslid. Its worse because they are trying to hold on to what little bit of God they have, but they are being deceived! Now they dont even know how to get back on the right track, and it all started by being /living defeated….WAKE UP!

  29. Spiritual Awakening:

11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.

This takes me back to the time that I would lie to gain favor in man’s eyes. I truly believed each lie I ever said. Now I look back and say what a stupid thing to tell somebody. I don’t let my past rule me, but it does guide me to a better understanding of who I use to be and where GOD has brought me from. My eyes have been opened to the truth of how I hurt people with the lies that I spread. It has taken me a long time to understand how I have hurt people that I love with the deception that I had in my heart. GOD woke me up from that darkness and I thank HIM every day for that awakening in myself.

    Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

    Thank you Jesus………Amen!!!

  30. 5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

  31. v1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; And Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in a any coast of Israel:,:

Every aspect of our relationship with GOD hinges on faith.
    Trust and obey.

  32. “And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.” The word of God (Jesus) identified why all were silenced. David had what appeared to be little options; however he turned his situation to the better. One should not be surprised but rather mindful that satan (deceiver) is an imitator. Dear God, expose and remove corrupt and deceptive leaders, and bless us with leaders that fear and reverence you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  33. “And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.” We must be careful what we think or say, and quick to seek the Lord and his will. There will be times of decision in our lives, which we should ask ourselves will my decision bring me closer to or away from the Lord. God help us to see our direction and change if it is not towards you, in Jesus name.

  34. 5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

When you find yourself under God’s grace, he will give you what you need in your life!

  35. David’s life among the Philistines may seem a confusing choice. He behaves humbly or so it seems in verse verse 5. Yet this humility allows him to live apart from the Kings watchful eye. While David’s brutality seems inexcusable to us, the destruction of peoples and cities is continuation of the conquest of Canaan begun by Joshua. David may live among his enemies but if we take a closer look we see that he is not under their submission. While Achish trusts David and believes that David has cut himself off from Israel (vs 12). David actually uses his protected life in the land of the Philistines to defeat Israel’s enemies for the benefit of Gods people.

  36. 5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?

  37. 1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
