1 Samuel 31

1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

2 And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchishua, Saul’s sons.

3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.

7 And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

9 And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

10 And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.

11 And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;

12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.

13 And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

  1. iLove to Grow in the Word

It was a very sad day in Israel, however it was prophesied and therefore had to come to pass. A person might great away with sin and disobedience for a season of time, however one day it all catches up and destroys everything in its path.

  2. 4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

  3. 6 So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together that same day. (NLT)

Once prophesied there’s no stopping the will of God. Guess you could say Saul finally got what was coming for him. Our best bet is to stay on the Lords side; He will never fail to see us through!

  4. 3. And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

    4. Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

It’s more important to worry about what happens to your soul than what happens to your body when you’re gone.

  5. YOU GOTTA KNOW WHEN TO RUN

Much could be said of the loyalty of the armourbearer of Saul. Commendable was his commitment to follow his leader. However there is a place and opportunity to RUN from a dead ended, hopeless situation. Saul was not following the LORD that anointed him. Saul was not respectful of the laws and statutes of GOD.

The armourbearer must have known the end of the Saul era was near and thus his position would be expired. It would have been a good opportunity to RUN from the pending demise and failure of the once revered king of Israel.

Leadership is necessary and submission to authority is irrevocable, however GOD gives us wisdom to recognize that JESUS has left the building, ministry or individual. Surely the armourbearer had been apprised of the Samuel to Saul conversations that GOD had rejected him and that he was no longer king over Israel. Surely the armourbearer was aware that on 2 occasions Sauls life was in the hands of David. Surely the armorbearer knew that Saul violated his own decree and utilized witchcraft to hear again from Samuel.

With all of these signs, the faithful committed armourbearer could have found another GOD fearing Leader to serve faithfully. GOD will give us wisdom to move on when the road is ending and YOU GOTTA KNOW WHEN TO RUN.

  6. 1 Samuel 31:12, “All the valiant (brave, courageous, heroic, bold, fearless) men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.”

Even after King Saul, his sons, his armourbearer, and his men were dead, and the men of Israel forsook their cities and fled, there was still a group of Valiant Men who Rose Up.

God will always have an Army that’s Rising Up!

  7. 3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.

4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

  8. 12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.

Even after all those men died there were still salient men to arise….Hallelujah

  9. 4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

  10. 9 A nd they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

10 And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.
The enemy of God was able to kill Saul and all of his family on the same day. It’s a sad sad story that starts with Rebellion and ends with Saul’s body being on display in Idols Temple. Saul and his sons became trophies of hell because of his disobedience. It’s a sad ending to a story that could have went great that’s all continue to follow God and be obedient.

  11. Uncircumcised fellows
The phrase is one of contempt. Saul did not expect such an enemy to torment or ridicule him the King of Israel.
Trusted plaved in mere men is always misplaced.
Those who follow flawed leaders will experience defeat with them .

  12. 1 Samuel 31:7 When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died they abandoned their towns and fled . And the Philistines came occupied them. The next day when the Philistines came to strip the dead they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. They cut off his head and stripped him of his armor and they sent messengers thoughtout the kand of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people. They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan. When the people of Jabest Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul all the valiant men marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh where they burned them. Then they took their bones and buried them under a tamarisk tree at Jabesh and they fasted seven days.

  13. 1 Samuel 31:11-13 (KJV Strong’s)
11 And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul; 12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there. 13 And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

We are not to rejoice when the unrighteousness meet their untimely demise. We are not to become excited at the prospect of those who have done us wrong facing judgement unrepentant. It should grieve our heart that they never repented before God.

    Our example should be Jesus’
“Forgive them father for they know not what they do”

  14. 12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.

  15. 12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.

A tragic ending to the first anointed king over Israel. It lets you know one thing. Anoiting is something to take care off. Even after Saul was seeking David to kill him he was still the Lord’s anoited. The major difference that i can see is that God had departed from Saul. We need to be filled every day that the Spirit of God can lead our lives

  16. It’s a sad sad story that starts with Rebellion and ends with Saul’s body being on display in Idols Temple. Saul and his sons became trophies of hell because of his disobedience. It’s a sad ending to a story that could have went great that’s all continue to follow God and be obedient. God way is always better than our ways.

  17. “And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.” The word of God (Jesus) said once they saw. The men of Israel perhaps believed all would go well as in times past; however it was recorded that was not the case. One that believes what is going on today doesn’t matter, is not thinking of the next generation or really don’t care about them. Dear God, awaken us and bless us with leaders that fear and reverence you, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  18. “And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchishua, Saul’s sons.” Saul’s actions had caught up with him. We must be mindful of our actions and quick to repent when needed, and all the more when we do not feel a need too. God help us realize that what we do can be just as important as what we do not do, in Jesus name.

  19. 1 Samuel 31:2
And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

    Jonathan- Jehovah has given
Abinadab- my father is noble, or my father is willing
    Malchishua- my king is wealth

When Saul (which means desired) made the fateful choice to disobey the lord and God took his hand off of him, he sealed the fate for everything he had. In the end he lost what God has given him, his nobility, his wealth, and his sons that he would have passed all that down too. His decision didn’t just affect him, it destroyed him from the inside out and took out his family as well. His family and legacy was almost completely wiped out. Be careful your choices and sin not only destroys you but has lasting effect on those you love and care about.

  20. “And when the inhabitants of Jabesh–gilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul; All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth–shan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.”
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭31:11-12‬ ‭KJV

The people were not just going because it was a body. They were going because it was their leader and the man that was put into position by God. They were brave to go I the face of such adversity, but they did and they were able to bring honor back to the anointed person that God put into place.

  21. “Saul and his three sons died together that same day. The man who carried his armor also died with them that day. So did all of Saul’s men.”
    ‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭31:6‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Although the prophet had died his words were still true and what was prophesied came to pass just like he said. I’m thankful for the prophetic words that have been spoken to our great city! Fort Worth, you haven’t seen nothing yet.

  22. This chapter made me think of “What if” as Saul realized that his demise what inevitable (as he saw it) and took matters into his own hands; but, “What if”? What some may see as a “no way out” could be a “what if” and we must present the opportunity to them that there is another answer.

  23. v9 And they city of his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

That’s why GOD hates boasting so much because of the destruction that it brings.

  24. But his armor bearer was afraid and would not do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.

A desperate man who has lost touch with God will be driven to desperate measures, in this case suicide.

  25. Even after being thoroughly defeated, valiant men rose up and took the bodies of the king and his sons to prevent further desecration. David would say of this that Saul was God’s anointed and no man should do him harm, even in death. Revenge and judgement belong to God alone which has now come to pass. Saul’s death along with sons was enough-no more and no less.

  26. 8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.

9 And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.

  27. 4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

His armor-bearer was very committed and loyal. It reminds me of the oath the presidents staff recites “I serve at the pleasure of the president”

We should all have a great respect and loyalty to our man of God as He follows the word of God leading us to make heaven our home.

At some point Sauls armorbearor had to realize Saul had strayed away from God. This is such a hard place yet should be a warning to all leadership that our lack of obeying God directly effects those that we lead.

This reignited a fear of God within my spirit. Lord, make me careful to not stray away from your will which leads to death and bring others with me. I want to be in your will.
