2 Samuel 8

1 And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

2 And he smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.

3 David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates.

4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.

5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

7 And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

8 And from Betah, and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, king David took exceeding much brass.

9 When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had smitten all the host of Hadadezer,

10 Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:

11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;

12 Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the spoil of Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David gat him a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.

14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

16 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

17 And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe;

18 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.

  1. Proverbs 12 NLT Thieves are jealous of each other’s loot,
but the godly are well rooted and bear their own fruit.

I see this as you should always keep your eyes on the things of the LORD. Let Him grow and increase you. Let Him nurture and cultivate you. When the LORD has His hand in it, things are more so established. When you try to do things yourself and lean on your own understanding you fail. Constantly looking at what others have and envying them, whether it is material things, positions in ministry, or anything else, you rob yourself of fulfillment evey time you take your eyes off of God.

  2. 6. Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

    14. And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

David knew and acknowledged that the Lord was preserving him and defeating his enemies. When things are going our way, we can’t fail to give glory to Him to whom all glory belongs.

    Psalm 108:
    5. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth;

    6. That thy beloved may be delivered: save with thy right hand, and answer me.

    7. God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

    8. Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver;

    9. Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.

    10. Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?

    11. Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?

    12. Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

    13. Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

  3. 15 David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people.

The Lord gave David the victory wherever he went….I believe it was because he took care of his people. Our faith is what keeps us in or victories, we need to trust and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. With Him we can do all things. I put my trust, confidence, dreams, hope, desires in you father.

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. 1 John 5:4

  4. Proverbs 12: Fools are headstrong and do what they like; wise people take advice.

I cannot recall being headstrong (stubborn) as a young person so that I did not listen to wise counsel. If the people in my life, who love me, warn me about situations and people – to best of my memory, I heeded those warnings. It seems young people today have this cloud of doubt and confusion concerning the advice and warning from the people who love them. From my perspective, it appears young people believe we are hiding the “good-life” behind our words of warning. We as adults and parents do not want the best for those we love – thus our warnings to stop, stay away and quite.

    What a delusional generation!

  5. “David also conquered the land of Moab. He made the people lie down on the ground in a row, and he measured them off in groups with a length of rope. He measured off two groups to be executed for every one group to be spared. The Moabites who were spared became David’s subjects and paid him tribute money.”
    ‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭8:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Bring the whole new meaning to, “when you get to the end of your rope”… I’m sure the thin folk all squeezed together on the good “stay alive” side. 😳

  6. “And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.”
    ‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭8:15‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  7. 15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

A ruler after God’s own heart.

Wow. To have a ruler that followed God. What a thought. We live in America. Land of the free because of the brave. We need a leader that will put God first in this nation. Then and only then will we have true unity in our nation.
When a leader puts God first, then God becomes the chief ruler. There’s a movement called alllivesmatter. But it’s not our life that counts. It’s the soul. It should read. All souls matter. Without God we are a lost soul. That’s it. That’s why we live on this earth. To get back to having a relationship with the creator. Then if we find him and receive his gift, and live a righteous life. Then our soul really matters. But all souls matter to God. So therefore all souls matter to me. But until we unity under this belief we will not have true, genuine unity.

  8. 11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;

  9. What a Faithful God we serve

6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

And the Lord preserve David. David did what Saul did not; Saul was told to go conquer and destroy the enemies but he decided to keep some alive. David follow God’s word if he said destroy all, David did so, if God said keep spoils, David did so and presented them to God. OUR GOD IS FAITHFUL TO DO EXCEEDINGLY, ABOVE ALL AND HE WILL PRESERVE YOU!!!!

  10. REFOCUS TO GROW AN ARMY

David, went to RECOVER his border at the river Euphrates. David, went to REFOCUS on his boundaries and territory that GOD had given them, but over the distractions of Sauls reign they had lost.

What really caught my attention this morning is the level of authority and victory that David proceeded with.

    1000 Chariots
    700 Horsemen
    20,000 Footmen

The Army of the LORD under the Leadership of David, conquered 21,700 men. He also kept a tithe of the chariot horses and disabled the rest. Thats 900 horses the army of David hamstrung or disabled.

What kind of Army would it require to conquer such a mass of people?

Scripture does not record the size of Davids army at the time of the conquer, but we do know the size of its beginning.

1Samuel 22:2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

David took 400 poverty minded men in a cave and prepared them to conquer the land that GOD had given them.

14 … And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.
15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

  11. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

  12. 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.

  13. ; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

The Lord preserved David. God has His hand on David even during his times of mistakes and failures God still kept David close to His heart. We see David in many battles he had a lot of victories. The o preserve means to put something into it to keep it. A jar of preserves can be kept a long time because it has been preserved it has an ingredient that keeps it. God wants to do this for all of us………preserving us to put something into us that will give us a keeping …….something that will last. I believe that is why pastor presses us to Blog . Sometimes it is an inconvience, some of us have our own daily devotions but our Pastor is putting into us the word , Preserving us putting into us something that will sustain us so much more than entertainment which many take p,entry of time to put onto their life. So let’s continue to allow the word to preserve us as God preserved David.

  14. In the NLT this chapter begins with “After this…” And then goes on for the rest of the chapter to tell of how victorious David was through God. Looking to the last chapter at what preceded David’s victories in this chapter, David had just prayed to God. He prayed a prayer of thanks and humbled himself before the Lord asking the Lord’s will to be done: “And now, O Lord God, I am your servant; do as you have promised concerning me and my family. Confirm it as a promise that will last forever.” (2 Samuel 7:25).

Lord, Thy will be done concerning me, concerning POFW. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done!

  15. 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots.

  16. 2 Samuel 8:11 King David dedicate these articles to the Lord as he had done with the silver and gold in from all the nations he had subdued Edom and Moab the Ammonites and the Philistines and Analek. He also dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son Rehob king of Zobah. And David became famous after he returned from striking down 18000 Edomites in the valley of salt.

  17. We need to remember after the battles that God has won for us in our life, we need to dedicate a portion of what he has given us to him as a token of thanks to God.

  18. 2 Samuel 8:15-18
    15) And David reigned over all Israel: and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.
    16) And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host: and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder:
    17) And Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests: and Seraiah was the scribe:
    18) And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites: and David’s sons were chief rulers.

David reigned over all Israel and was a great king, but part of his success as a king was having a committed team of men behind him helping him.
No one can do it alone. It takes Team Work.

At POFW, let’s get behind our Pastor and work together as a Team for the kingdom of God. TEAM WORK!!

  19. David gave God the glory in the good times and praised his name in the not so good times. And when his heart was sore he encouraged himself in the Lord.
Not everyone goes through the good times at the same time, to those who are having a blessed day? Praise God! And bless you. For when you rejoice, I also will rejoice with you.

  20. 10 Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:

    11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;

This is why David was a man after Gods own heart, everything he did was unto God, he consulted him before going into battle, he gave everything he gained in battle to the Lord! He had a heart of praise, a heart of worship, he loved God with every fiber of his being…thats why God always protected him David had nothing to worry about as long as he trusted in God. The same is for us, God will preserve us, we dont need to worry about anything, as long as we are doing what is right and pleasing to God, yes David was a man after Gods own heart, we can be that too, all we need is to submit!

6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

  21. 2 Samuel 8
6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

GOD kept and protected David no matter what he did. David was a man after GOD’s own heart. It doesn’t matter the situation that I’m in; as long as I stay focused on GOD and HIS kingdom. I believe that GOD will keep and preserve me as well. No matter the mistakes that I make. As long as I always give the glory to GOD; HE will be there for me. And there will always be garrisons of angels watching over me.

    Thank you Jesus…….Amen!!!
    Psalms 16, 41
16:1 “(Michtam of David.) Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.”
41:2 The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.

The Lord’s hand comtinued to stay with David and be with him in whatever he did. It reminds me of King Midas were everything he touched “turned to Gold ” God can give us so much favor that everything we do is blessed. If we stay faithful to him he will bless us like David.

  23. Not only did David take back the land they had been given by God, he set up garrisons of soldiers to guard it. This makes me think of what has God given us? Do we guard it or do we let distractions steal our focus. Our promises from God make take a little longer to come to pass but we must still proclaim them and praise him for them till it comes to pass. He has also given us ministries that we must guard and develop. The lost must have a beacon of light to follow to come to God. Guard your giftings and talents so we can be used of God in these last days to bring others to Him.

  24. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

Stay focused on God and He will protect you from your enemies! Give God the praise in all things and at all times!!

  25. “6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.”

I feel like as we keep winning more souls for God’s kingdom, those same souls will bring talents they possess that will help us all grow spiritually.

  26. 2 Samuel 8:15 (NLT)
15 So David reigned over all Israel and did what was just and right for all his people.

Verse 15 was the prophetical fulfillment of the promise God made through Samuel to David.

But look at what got David to this point. He was hunted like an animal, lost his wife to another man, and acted crazy in front of his enemies. He even joined with his enemies and lived with them.

He saw his home burnt to the ground, and witnessed many battles. He saw his Prophet, his King, and his best friend killed.

Yet all of this was worth it in the end. Trust God through the hard times. He knows what he is doing and is working it out for your good.

  27. 14 And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edom became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

  28. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

David is blessed and highly favored from God. David always made God first in his life, he was a servant of God and no doubt that God always had his back and helped him in battles and was always victorious. David treated people with fairness and justice as the King of Israel people looked up to him and David looked up to the favor of God. David was a great example and used mightily of God.

  29. 10 Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:

    11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued;

The importance of giving everything back to God for His service, because it all belongs to Him anyway is evidenced in this chapter. It is important that everything we do is done for the Lord’s benefit and with His favor and blessing.

  30. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

This made me think of the All Sate slogan,”Are you in good hands?” when we are walking with the Lord se have the best security/insurance/protection/provison. To be insured one has to pay the policy. So we could say to walk with God we have to pay the price of carrying our cross daily and living a righteous life. We could say we ought to walk and follow his steps and be by his side. If we loose our live for Christ we will find it.

    Psalm 91 verse 1-3 reads:
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
    2. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.
    3. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

The key here is dwelleth…constantly abide in his presence.

    Are you in good hands?

  31. 15 David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people.

David took care of God’s business, so God took care of him! David had the favor of God upon his life. He was a king to fullfilled God’s purpose and not his fleshly desires!!

  32. When the time is right

David knew that the time was right to go establish his kingdom. David inquired of God about every move to make so that he was sure to have victory. If God said go then David would go. If God said stay then David would stay. In David’s obedience he became Closer and closer to God through praying to know what to do next. A lot of us want the whole plan and for God to let us go do it on our own but God gives us just enough instruction that we have to come back again and again for more. This way it is a relationship. As David’s relationship with God grew his victories grew as well. David didn’t want to be in front of or behind God he wanted to go with him.

  33. And after this it came to pass that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.

We are at war with the enemy and it’s time for the warriors of God to stand and take live out of the hand of the enemy.

  34. “Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass”. The word of God (Jesus) identified personal motive. There was little regard for David when he was an unknown; however once he became known for his God given victories, things changed. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  35. “Which also king David did dedicate unto the Lord, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued”. He remembered to give unto the Lord, which he was blessed for. We should never forget to give unto the Lord, as we will also be blessed. God help us see the importance of giving unto you, in Jesus name.

  36. 2 Samuel 8:1 In the days that followed, David struck hard at the Philistines— brought them to their knees and took control of the countryside.

There comes a time in your walk if you allow God to keep molding you, that you can go from killing bears and lions, to slaying Giants, to kill thousands to killing 10’s of thousands, to bringing a whole countryside of Devils to their knees and under your feet.

It’s a process, without the right amount time given to God for mold us would mean we are prolonging what God wants to do.

  37. Their is so much to account for the victories in battle the Lord has given David. He never forgot who was the true victor. We know that because he collected gold shields, silver, gold and bronze and dedicated it into the Lord. He did this as he has done from all the nations that he has subdued. The Lord gave him victory wherever he went for it pleased God. It wasn’t by might nor by power but by His Spirit. God will give us victories if we glorify him as the true victor.

  38. “Thus David ruled over all of Israel. He ruled well—fair and even-handed in all his duties and relationships.”
    ‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭8:15‬ ‭MSG‬‬
    http://bible.com/97/2sa.8.15.msg

As leaders we need to be fair and know our limits. We need God to help us, and sometimes we need helping hands from others to accomplish tasks we cannot complete on our own.

  39. The end of verses 6 and 14 MSG say “God gave David victory wherever he marched.” This reminded me of our prayer walks downtown. We have already marched around and claimed this city for Jesus. Just as the Lord helped David wherever he went; He can help us wherever we go in His name. We have to seek His direction and follow His will to be victorious.

  40. 14 He put garrisons throughout Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.

We learn from David to follow God and we will have victory no matter what because that’s how great our God is to have victory over the enemy! Thank you God for being my provider and protector. What an awesome God we serve!

  41. “And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.”(2 Samuel‬ ‭8:15‬ ‭KJV)

David was a just and fair ruler to the people of Israel. He has taken what the Lord has promised and blessed him with to care for God’s people. His reign will continue until the coming of Jesus who will return for us to reign forever as our King of kings.

  42. 13 So David became even more famous when he returned from destroying 18,000 Edomitese in the Valley of Salt.

With each victory, David became more recognized and famous. Victory brings recognition, show of strength and leadership.

  43. “David built a victory monument on his return from defeating the Arameans. Abishai son of Zeruiah fought and defeated the Edomites in the Salt Valley. Eighteen thousand of them were killed. David set up a puppet government in Edom, and the Edomites became subjects under David. GOD gave David victory wherever he marched.
Thus David ruled over all of Israel. He ruled well—fair and even-handed in all his duties and relationships.”
    ‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭8:13-15‬ ‭MSG‬‬

GOD gave David victory wherever he marched.
Wow. God gave David victory. It’s not just because David was a man, it was because David was anointed. It was because David sought God. It was because here was a relationship between David and God that other people didn’t seek to find.

If we want to have victories in our lives then we too need to seek out our relationship with God. We need to listen and respond. We need to seek often and diligently.

iSeek To GROW Closer To God
