2 Samuel 15
1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.
4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!
5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.
8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.
9 And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.
10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.
11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.
12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.
13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.
14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
15 And the king’s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.
16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.
17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.
18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.
20 Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.
23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:
26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
28 See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.
29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.
30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.
32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.
37 So Hushai David’s friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

David could have just as easily prayed for the death of Ahithophel; instead he shows mercy and restraint and prays that the traitor doesn’t benefit the conspirator.
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
Confuse the enemy!!
2 Samuel 15:26 But if he says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.”
A surrender of guilt!
It seems that David had given up. The bible doesn’t say he had done anything wrong, but for. Him to loose grip of his influence and favor with the people so easily show that he was being careless as a ruler.
Sin isn’t the only thing that can affect us, being overly involved with the cares of this life can be a way the enemy uses to attack us.
For 40 years the enemy was working on David, robing from him favor, power, influence, from the people. When David took action,his only choice was to flee. The stronghold of the enemy had forced him from his home, his lifestyle, his privileges. Little by little, chipped away at his life that he was able to defeat, the giant killer, the slayer of thousands.
Self examine your life, check to see if the enemy is secretly trying to sabotage your life.
In reading this chapter, we see how quickly a situation can change. Sometimes we think that certain decisions we make, or who/what we trust in are good for us; but, in reality it can change the course of your life. We need to be ready to stay the course and not let anything or anyone distract us from that. This chapter also reminded me of this past Sunday, as we learned about being a servant in Sunday School. In verse 21 AMP it says “But Ittai answered the king, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, most certainly wherever my lord the king may be, whether for death or life, there will your servant be also.” Submission and a willingness of heart are key in staying on that course.

Absalom was deceitful. He was not following after God yet the word says he stole the hearts of the people. We have to be careful who we allow to get close to us, the world will beckon for you. The things you once hatedwillbethings you now love we must keep,our hearts close to God and guard our hearts with truth, love, forgiveness less we allow our hearts to be stollen by the enemy! I want to keep all my heart ever so pure before God guarding every aspect of my life. Asking God to help me speak words of kindness and laying aside any bitterness or hurts as pastor recently preached. Lord guard our hearts so that they will not be stolen by the deceitful one.
22 David replied, “All right, come with us.” So Ittai and all his men and their families went along. (NLT)
Ittai was faithful to his authority at the time, we too should be faithful in all matters.
Be careful what you vow to God.
7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.
Time does not dissolve the vows we make to God. If we vowed three years ago that we would sacrifice so much money a moth towards Impacting our Future Together, God still expects us to honor our vow. If we vowed to our spouse that we would be faithful, honor, cherish and love them until death do us part; God still expects us to continue with what we said we would do.
II Samuel 15:6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment : so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Roman16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Who’s standing at your gate
2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
Absalom knew that if he made the king unavailable to his people he could win them over. We must be aware of who is at our gate at all times. Let’s not get so high and mighty that we become unreachable to those who need Christ. Let’s make sure we are aware and available but at the same time guarding our heart and home.

How do you steal people’s hearts… Just be nice to them and tell them what they want to hear…
14 “Then we must flee at once, or it will be too late!” David urged his men. “Hurry! If we get out of the city before Absalom arrives, both we and the city of Jerusalem will be spared from disaster.” NLT
They were warned what was to happen. Since David took heed to the warning he was able to escape.
15 And the king’s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.
31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

I’ve never seen such a clear example of someone subverting and undermining authority in the bible as this passage. Absolom clearly got out of his place and began to feel he could do a better job than the king. We must watch ourselves that we stay in our place and not allow ourselves to fall into this trap of rebellion

Lord you lead and I will follow! I will go wherever you call me!

This chapter made me think of how we all have a choice to make as to who we are going to follow. Even Ittai had to make a choice.
Some made the choice to follow the smooth-talking, deceitful Absalom, while others made the choice to follow king David.
Joshua 24:15 says, “… choose you this day whom ye will serve: … but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
7 After four years of this, Absalom spoke to the king, “Let me go to Hebron to pay a vow that I made to God. 8 Your servant made a vow when I was living in Geshur in Aram saying, ‘If God will bring me back to Jerusalem, I’ll serve him with my life.'” 9 The king said, “Go with my blessing.” And he got up and set off for Hebron. MSG
It is better to never make a vow than to make a vow and break it. Be careful what you are praying and saying to God, some may say “God if you break my children back to you I will praise you forever”, if “God will give me a better job making more money I’m going to give more to God”. where are these promised vows at now? It amazes me that when I hear someone say that ask God for this and they would do this and when God answers them they don’t remember the vow they made.
God help me to not make a vow that I cannot keep.

Deception to get a position. Position is not whats important, a SOLID, UNBREAKABLE, SURE, relationship is what matters the most!

Absalom it seems to me had a problem keeping a promise to GOD. A vow is a very sacred promise. I haven’t lived up to my vows. Here lately it feels that I have let my family down as the spiritual leader of our home. I have not lived up to the promises that I have made. I know that when I make that vow, I’m held accountable. GOD, my prayer today is that from here forward you will guide me to being the strong leader of my home and to never break a promise and to live up to any vow that I make unto you.

David was considered a mighty man of God, a man of war, and a hero. Yet one may find it confusing that David fled from his son and Saul. David was experienced and trained in fighting, he knew his way around a sword and battlefield. David gives us a physical example of fleeing from temptation. It was tempting to take matters into his own hands and kill Saul, it was tempting to destroy absalom and squash out his rebellion but to do so would take God out of the equation. Temptation isn’t always to fall into obvious sin, temptation can be to reject Gods timing and will. David was a man after Gods own heart, he fell but repented. He submitted himself not just to the call of God but his timing and will. He took his hands off the situation and let God fight those battles.
Romans 12:19
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
2 Samuel 15: 32 When David arrived at the summit where the people used to worship God. Hushai the Arkite was there to meethim. His robe torn and dust on his head. David said to him if you go with me you will be a burden to me. But if you return to the city and say Absalom. Your majesty I will be your servant I was your father’s servant in the past but now I will be your servant then you can help me by frustrating Ahithophel advice.
A CHURCH SPLIT THROUGH DECEPTION
5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Absalom promoted himself to the position of judge, he also was cunning with his words and obviously very charismatic. But, Absalom lacked integrity, character, accountability and submission. Through compliments, gifts and special treatment, Absalom STOLE the hearts of the men of Israel.
There is a difference in WINNING a HEART and STEALING a HEART.
The purpose for Absaloms deception we learn in verse:

8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.

10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.

Absalom planned to SPLIT the Kingdom.
Be prayerful of smooth talkers that do not honor their leader. Be prayerful of people that always give gifts and compliments. Absalom was victim of the same spirit that caused the fall of satan. He desired to be king.
GOD has already established a plan for the promotion of man in HIS Kingdom.

Just like grandpa David. Jesus went to the mount to pray and weep. I love how there are so many same things in the bible. I love to read his word.

Wolves in she eps clothing came to mind when I read this portion about Absalom being deceitful with the King.
There are those who appear to be for the vision of the house, but in their hearts they are just waiting for their opportunity to rise up and become the leader. Prayerfully we must guard our hearts so that deception does not come in and cause us to follow ourselves instead of the path of the Lord.
Division is never the will of God. Multiplication yes, division no.

Absalom grew bolder and bolder as he saw that he could stay at the gate greeting all Israel coming to the King. It doesn’t say here, but surely someone would have reported this to David. It’s not something that could be done secretly for this long. So, David must have known that his best move was to flee until he could inquire of the Lord. But why did he allow this to creep in? It was subtle and little by little. We can allow little seemingly harmless habits into our lives only to discover that they have grown into a real concern. Guard your holiness and your walk with God so that you don’t stray from the straight and narrow path.
33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
But while he was there, he sent secret messengers to all the tribes of Israel to stir up a rebellion against the king. “As soon as you hear the ram’s horn,” his message read, “you are to say, ‘Absalom has been crowned king in Hebron.’” He took 200 men from Jerusalem with him as guests, but they knew nothing of his intentions. While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, one of David’s counselors who lived in Giloh. Soon many others also joined Absalom, and the conspiracy gained momentum.
2 Samuel 15:10-12 NLT
Since previous chpaters we see Absalom with roots of rebellion and wanting to take things into his own hand. Never did he respect authority in his life. Another thing that was intersting to note on the previous chpater we see how the word says that there was no other more fair than hom because of his beauty. It reminded me of lucider. He knew people praised him and had charisma and used all this to manipulate and decieve others. He set himself judge and proclaimed himslef king. God is the one who calls and anoints. When God calls he will have you he sent out. Many try and set themsleves up only to be found fighting the hand of God and later being destroyed for their foolishness. The devil try to set himself like the most High and got thrown out. We should be cautious to keep ourselves in check. Dont let your gifts blind you. It is God’s glory we reflect. Stay submitted and faithful and wait for God’s call. The spiritual authority over your life will be able to recognize when God has called you just like Eli told Samuel; if you hear the voice one more time say “here am I Lord, speak.”
I know God.
It looks like the men in the Word was being tested to see who or what they were going to follow. I’m sorry Jesus that they were doing thier own thing. I pray Lord that I can respect you more and more and be in your will everyday.

I believe as saints of the most high God we should never make a vow we cannot keep. God is always accountable to his word and we should be too. There may be a time or 2 that you may be in a desperate situation and you start making promises that you know you can’t keep that is not wise.

25 Then the king instructed Zadok to take the Ark of God back into the city. “If the Lord sees fit,” David said, “he will bring me back to see the Ark and the Tabernacle again. 26 But if he is through with me, then let him do what seems best to him.”
Good or bad I’m not giving up. If I’m blessed, or if I receive the lows that life can offer I won’t turn from God. I will trust in him regardless of what may come. He will never forsake me.
David trusted in the Lord to do as he sees fit and was willing to accept whatever God would give him. I believe this is a display of faith. Though he slay me yet will I praise him.
Choose you this day who you will serve
Absalom orchestrates a plot to take over his father’s throne. First he flatters the people by giving favorable verdicts concerning their cases then accused the king of being lax in trying cases. Then suggests that if “only he were judge over the land” (vs 4) he would give them justice. Last he crosses the line between royalty and commoner in kissing all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice and “stole the hearts of the men of Israel” (vs 6). He carried out his plan like a professional politician and he pulls off his trickery because of his high rank, his handsome appearance and courtesy to even the loveliest person. But not everything that glitters is gold about him. Yet through it all his father David witnesses everything and doesn’t take Absoloms actions seriously just like Tamar’s rape. Both are in the wrong but it doesn’t make one better than the other no matter their position God blessed them with. Instead of reconciling their relationship they are going to destroy it.
A foolish man would go behind his Authority back to get what he pleases. He’ll do what ever to be king, to be on top.Even to be a pastor. Even hurt and break up the kingdom/ a church to
Get where they want. I’ve seen many people try to over power and over throne their king or pastor. And all of them fall eventually down the road. Cause they have no blessing. And no Authority over them.
Position is a wicked thing if used only for fame. LORD HELP US!

David was wise.
“If a wise man contends with a foolish man, Whether the fool rages or laughs, there is no peace. The bloodthirsty hate the blameless, But the upright seek his well-being.”
Proverbs 29:9-10 NKJV
Where did the disconnect of respect and reverence for the king go? This is how politics works. No respect for the leader but everyone jockeying for position in total disregard for the lives that are effected. Absolom wanted what his Dad had but he had not done the work that his Dad did. More than winning hearts with patronism you absolutely have to get in the trenches with people if you want their respect. No leader will stay in position without doing the work first.

This is why it’s so important to study the word of God daily. In these last days, so many false prophets will arise to deceive us and if we don’t have the word of God in our hearts we will question the truth we stand on.
25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:

The prophecy of Nathan continues as Absalom maneuvers to Ursurp the throne. This was a long thought out plan in which he spent years working toward.
“For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.” The word of God (Jesus) identified deception. One should first consider the father of deception (satan), which will further solidify that deception knows NO allegiance as we see here with his own son. Dear God, remove far from us deceptiveness and deceptive leaders, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!
“But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.” David did not try to justify self or anything he had done, he was simply humble. The Lord allowed this to happen, just as he allows other things to happen. We should recognize that sometimes our part is too pray and say; “let him do to me as seemeth good unto him”. God help us to see as you see, in Jesus name.
Be a faithful Servant in the best of times and the worst of times.
This chapter should caution us from listening to flattering words. Flattering words may win the crowds but the type of crowd that is won is not one that will stay because the moment your words turn to correction or direction your will loose some if not all.
Any great leader will tell you it’s better to lead a few good faithful sheep than a crowd of goats.
“The king’s officials answered him, “You are our king and master. We’re ready to do anything you want.”
But Ittai replied to the king, “You are my king and master. I want to be where you are. It doesn’t matter whether I live or die. And that’s just as sure as the Lord and you are alive.””

So much more was accomplished with the people support and willingness to follow David’s lead.
10 But while he was there, he sent secret messengers to all the tribes of Israel to stir up a rebellion against the king. “As soon as you hear the ram’s horn,” his message read, “you are to say, ‘Absalom has been crowned king in Hebron.’
Absalom would say anything to convince the people to support him. Sounds like a politician, say anything to gain their vote.
