1 Kings 2

1 Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,

2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

4 That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.

5 Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.

6 Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.

7 But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.

8 And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the Lord, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.

9 Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.

10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

11 And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.

12 Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.

13 And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.

14 He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.

15 And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the Lord.

16 And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.

17 And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.

18 And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.

19 Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.

20 Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.

21 And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.

22 And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.

23 Then king Solomon sware by the Lord, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

24 Now therefore, as the Lord liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

25 And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.

26 And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord God before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.

27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the Lord; that he might fulfil the word of the Lord, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

28 Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.

29 And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.

30 And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the Lord, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

31 And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.

32 And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.

33 Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the Lord.

34 So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

35 And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.

36 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.

37 For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.

38 And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

39 And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath.

40 And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.

41 And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.

42 And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the Lord, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.

43 Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?

44 The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;

45 And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever.

46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

  1. Verses 1-4 MSG say “When David’s time to die approached, he charged his son Solomon, saying, “I’m about to go the way of all the earth, but you—be strong; show what you’re made of! Do what God tells you. Walk in the paths he shows you: Follow the life-map absolutely, keep an eye out for the signposts, his course for life set out in the revelation to Moses; then you’ll get on well in whatever you do and wherever you go. Then God will confirm what he promised me when he said, ‘If your sons watch their step, staying true to me heart and soul, you’ll always have a successor on Israel’s throne.’

    Psalm 32:8 AMP says “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you [who are willing to learn] with My eye upon you.” Same verse NLT “The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” Follow Him!

  2. 12 Solomon became king and sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established. (NLT)

    Solomon’s obedience firmly established his kingdom. Our obedience to God and His kingdom will bring us success as David spoke of in verse 3: “Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.”

  3. 1 Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,

    2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

    3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    Listen to your elders. They’ve lived life long enough to know things young people like me may not know. And not just any elder, but one that has lived their life in God to the fullest. Just because an individual stayed in church for 30 years doesn’t necessarily mean they let themselves have the growth God is wanting them to experience.

  4. KEYS FOR SUCCESS

    3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    The fading King David gives specific instructions to his son and reigning King Solomon.

    1. Keep the charge of the LORD.
    2. Walk in the ways of the LORD.
    3. Keep HIS Statutes.
    4. Keep HIS Commandments.
    5. Keep HIS Judgements.
    6. Keep HIS Testimonies.

    In summary, LIVE for GOD. Make HIS ways to become our ways. Learn and Love the WORD of GOD.

    4 That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.

    Obedience to God and his word, and obedience to the men of God over you in your life is key to your spiritual success in life!

  6. 2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

    3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

    3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    It is so important that we do not take for granted our elders who have served the Lord for many a years, and could shed light into our pathway and help make the way we take much easier. Everyone can learn from those above you, those beside you and even those just coming up. Let’s keep our eyes and hearts open always seeking a wealth of knowledge to better ourselves and others that come after us.

  8. 3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    David is giving instructions to his son about what’s most important in life. About what matters the most for a man of God. We should remember that we must stick to the laws and the ordinances that God has given us just asked Solomon did. If so God will bless and prosper us and his hand will be upon us.

  9. Life is not fair, it was never intended to be. Life is life; up, down and indifferent. That business you work for? Someone’s trying to kill it. That job you like? Someone would love to replace you with a computer program. That girlfriend / boyfriend / high-paying job that you want? So does somebody else.

    We’re all in competition, although we prefer not to realise it. Most achievements are only notable relative to others. You swam more miles, or ran faster or got more Facebook Likes than the average. Well done.

    It’s a painful thing to believe, of course, which is why we’re constantly assuring each other the opposite. “Just do your best”, we hear. “You’re only in competition with yourself”. The funny thing about platitudes like that is they’re designed to make you try harder anyway. If competition really didn’t matter, we’d tell struggling children to just give up.

    Fortunately, we don’t live in a world where everyone has to kill each other to prosper. The blessings of the Lord are abundant, and enough for us all to get by. We must learn to trust the Lord and follow His Word.

  10. “And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭2:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    This should be a charge and a wish for every father to their son. The son will bring his father joy and peace when he follows in the ways of the Lord.

  11. 3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    To many of us, this is easier said than done, but the reality is……. IT’S ONLY AS HARD AS WE MAKE IT!!!
    Thank you JESUS!!! HALELUJAH! !!

  12. King David advised his son to keep the charge of God.
    He did not advise him in prosperity of the world but in a world of wealth of a spiritual aspect which supercedes any thing the world had to offer by admonishing him to stay close to God keeping his commandments.

  13. iLove to Grow in the Word
    ““Do as he said,” the king replied. “Kill him there beside the altar and bury him. This will remove the guilt of Joab’s senseless murders from me and from my father’s family.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭2:31‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    Life was at the altar in the former blog and now there is death at the altar. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Joab finally gets the reward for the murder of the men he was envious of

  14. And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    4 That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.

    Walk in his ways and obeying his Commandments also means is submitting yourself to your leaders and people above u

  15. 8. And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the Lord , saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.

    9. Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.

    44. The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;

    46. So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

    Just because justice and retribution aren’t immediate, that doesn’t mean they’re not going to be fulfilled.

  16. 1 Kings 2:3, “And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself.”

  17. 3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:
    David was setting up his son to be king in his place. David told his son to remember the ways of the Lord, keep God first, serve him with all your heart, keep his commandments. David was a wise man. He knew where his help came from and he held his son accountable. Thank God for Great leaders!

  18. -Do what God tells you. This is my prayer that I can walk and do what God has called me to do. I believe in this day and time we need to pray for our children young and older as the world has so much peer pressure these days that kids/young adults want to fit in. I want to think like Jesus and see people as he sees them, cause you never know who is watching you

  19. “That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.” The word of God (Judge) recorded the reward for obedience. David (father) passed down to Solomon (son) what would be if he obeyed God. One can wonder why things are the way they are today, or one can be honest with self and understand why. Dear God, help us comprehend the importance of teaching our children about you (the only God), and bless us with leaders that fear you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  20. “And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the Lord.” Adonijah’s corrupt and deceptive actions cost him, as well as others. We should be mindful of anyone that partakes in similar actions, as their actions always affect others. God, help us recognize the Adonijah’s, in Jesus name.

  21. 3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    keep the charge of the Lord thy God
    walk in his ways,
    keep his statutes
    keep his commandments
    keep his judgments
    keep his testimonies

    Joshua 1:7-8
    Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying, Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.

    My Lord! All I can think about when I read 1 Kings 2:3 was Joshua 1:7-10. “POFW” Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Then “Pastor Watts” commanded the officers of the people, saying, Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three “months” ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.

    POFW have you heard the charge? If not it’s time to awaken and go because it has already gone out, now lets possess the land! “Give me children, or else I die!” I’m going to possess!!

  22. be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

    3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

  23. 1 Kings 2:44-45 (KJV Strong’s)
    44 The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head; 45 And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever.

    Follow righteousness and reap righteousness. Follow wickedness and reap wickedness. God made it simple. You get out what you put in.

  24. “Then the king gave the order to Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada. Benaiah left the palace and struck Shimei down. And he killed him. So the kingdom was now made secure in Solomon’s hands.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭2:46‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

    So much heartache happen before the kingdom was secure. But the house needed to be cleaned out!

  25. 2 “I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man. 3 Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go. 4 If you do this, then the Lord will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’

  26. “The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head; And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever. So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭2:44-46‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    Sometimes it takes losing things from our lives before we get what is promised to us. We don’t always want to let go. If we are to surrender to his plan the we have to do things we don’t always want to do.

  27. 3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

    The only way to be blessed and prosperous is to live life according to the Word of God. For in them is wisdom and life.

  29. Adonijah’s ruse continues. He requests his father’s last concubine. Why? 2 Sam 16:21-22 Ahithophel replied to Absalom, “Have sex with your father’s concubines whom he left to care for the palace. All Israel will hear that you have made yourself repulsive to your father. Then your followers will be motivated to support you.” 16:22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and Absalom had sex with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

    With Bathsheba’s involvement in Solomon’s acquisition to the thrown, it is fair to assume she is adept in politics. So her request to Solomon for Adonijah’s proposal may very well be a prudent way to warn Solomon of Adonijah’s continued grasp for the thrown.

  30. 31 And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.

  31. 1 Kings 2:43 Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?

    When you make an oath (leadership covenant) unto the Lord, keep it. I was served at God under other leaders in the past. Many have preached the gospel with fervor and zeal, but what they all had in common was there lack of commitment to uphold certain biblical standards, in order to minister. So there was a lack of anointing because of it. There was upkeep to his righteous living besides the most obvious that or the absolute complete lack of respect in an outward appearance. As a result, there lacked anoint brought from such a lower standard required to minister.

    You could live completely in sin, and be a hell bound sinner as long as you looked the part and came to practice. Thee transition has been difficult, never have been so challenged to keep such a high standard to minister. Honestly if you are bible believing and following man or woman, practicing what holiness inward and outwardly, would make you look at the covenant like simply signing up to do what you already do for your own salvation sake.

    Thank you Lord for giving me the opportunity to see the need for discipline.

  32. Joab intentionally murdered two men Abner, who was his own cousin and Amasa. The penalty for these crimes is Joab’s life. King David knows this but is reluctant may stem from the fact that Joab has faithfully served him for many years. He was the commander even when Absalom attempted to take the throne from him. Joab is also his own nephew, and even though he is family he knows that he must be punished and leaves this task for his son Solomon. Though Joab could have been known for his valor and honor, he instead leaves a legacy of dishonor and violence, receiving a well-deserved punishment at the hands of Davids son (1Ki 2:31).

  33. 4 That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.

    Words of wisdom for every person seeking the Lord and to be saved. Walk before Him without spot or blemish, be quick to repent and make things right.

  34. 44 The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;

    45 And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever.

    46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

    Solomon followed his father David’s instructions about certain men who did wrong and needed to be punished. Solomon saw his Father’s wishes come to pass and now has complete control of the Kingdom.

  35. 4If you do this, then the LORD will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’

    Thats the big questions, “if” we follow his commandments, then we’ll see his kingdom. Its simple, obey his commands.
