1 Kings 3

1 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.

2 Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.

3 And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.

4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.

5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.

14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

15 And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.

16 Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.

17 And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.

18 And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.

19 And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it.

20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.

21 And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.

22 And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.

23 Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.

24 And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.

25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.

26 Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.

27 Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.

28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

    Thank you Jesus.

  3. Should you live with a Harlot?
Ever lasting life is what we should live for. I pray that I won’t make the same mistakes I did in the past. The unbeliever is loved and cherished, And put up and put down again. It doesn’t give us the right to judge them. Teach if possible but not condemn them.

I pray that I can learn righteous judgement and not condemn them.

THANKYOU Lord and forgive me for judging others.

  4. 5 That night the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”

9 Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. (NLT)

In verse 5 The Lord asked Solomon what it was that he wanted. Solomon was humble and meek, he knew his weakness as king and asked Gid for what he needed to become a better one. Verse 10 says the Lord was pleased by this. What is it that you need from God? Ask and He will bless abundant and exceeding, far more than what you could even imagine and ask!

  5. 3. And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.

    4. And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.

    5. In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

By the time Solomon had gone to Gibeon a thousand times to sacrifice, he had built such a relationship with God that God knew He could trust Solomon with His offer to give him anything he asked for.

Are we walking in His statutes? Have we built a relationship, and sacrificed enough, that God could trust us with such an offer?

  6. 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.

Amen!!!! The Lord was pleased with what he asked for and God gave him more than what he asked for. From reading this I learned that when u asked for the spiritual the Lord will give it to you and give you more. Thank you father for your guidance.

  7. COMMITMENT REVEALS TRUTH

Commitments often come freely in seasons of emotional inquiry. People sign commitments on loans, marriages, pledges, professional and volunteer. Commitments of FAITH are utilized here at The POFW. The Discipleship Covenant, The Leadership Covenant and The Ministry Covenant are the commitments that have helped to mold The POFW. Over the past 13 plus years we have had numerous commitments signed, however it is those that respect, honor and uphold their commitment that actually demonstrate the commitment.

COMMITMENT REVEALS TRUTH through our sacrifice. As with these mothers, when the mention of death to the child is presented the TRUTH is REVEALED. Our ACTIONS are the greatest display of COMMITMENT and TRUTH. Our lives REVEAL what we are COMMITTED to.

It is such an honor to labor in the Kingdom of GOD with such an incredible number of COMMITTED believers as GOD has BLESSED The POFW. May JESUS help us to continue to allow COMMITMENT REVEALS TRUTH be a valued approach to Ministry.

  8. 1 Kings 3:9-12 (NLT)
    9) Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?
    10) The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom.
    11) So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies –
    12) I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!”

    James 1:5 (NLT)
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”

  9. 9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

    11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

Solomon was selfless in his request of the Lord so he got so much more than he asked for. He didn’t ask for an understanding heart for his own selfish ambition but instead he asked to benefit the Kingdom and people of God. When you take care of HIS business HE will take care of yours.

  10. Solomon chose the most beneficial thing he could have asked God for wisdom.
He knew he won neeasily ga great multitude of leople. He hu.bled himself when he said he was but a child. We are God’s children the word spoken to n us on Wednesday that God runs to.us as a parent holding us. We are His xhildren. Again we .is seek wisdom from God we will not find anywhere else.
If we are to lead others to Christ we will have to sp. It wit a bit of wisdom.
Solomom was the wisest man ever me roomed in the Bible.

  11. 7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The Lord was pleased with the prayer of Solomon because he asked for things that would better the kingdom and not personal gain.

Too many are caught up on personal gain, and pleasing themselves, than they are pleasing the Lord and growing the kingdom of God.

Only one life so soon it will pass, only what’s done for Christ will last
Only one chance to do His will, so give to Jesus all your days,
It’s the only life that pays, when you recall you will have but one life.

  12. 1 Kings 3:13-14 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days. And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

I noticed in these two verses something that brought light. I was always under the impression that God had granted Solomon riches, honour, and long life because he asked for wisdom. Verse 14, God put a condition under the blessing of long life. Only if he was to walk in his ways, keep his statutes and commandments was God going to grant him long life. Let’s not ever misunderstand what the Lord has declared in his word.

Most scriptures about salvation require some form action, which makes them conditional. Because without the reaction there is to accept, there is not seeing God.

  13. 3 And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.

14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

  14. iLove to Grow in the Word
“And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life!”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭3:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This scripture teaches us that wisdom, riches, and honor really do come from the Lord. When we bring honor to the Lord he will reward us😀👍

  15. 3-7
Solomons homble remark that he wasw but a little child is to be understood as a statment of his inexperience . He had already sired a son.

  16. “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?” The word of God (Jesus) identifies selflessness. Solomon showed where his heart was, and he was blessed for it. Change comes when one wants what will benefit others, and not just self. Dear God, bless us (me) with a servant’s heart. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  17. “Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.” This example identifies how a real mother will love, and will sacrifice. It also identifies how a mother should want the best for her child, even if it means they will not be with them. God help mothers raise their children as you intended, in Jesus name.

  18. 9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

    11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

God loves when his people seek after him and he rewards him for doing so. What do I mean by that? It doesn’t refer to Solomon asking to seek after God in that scripture, but to seek an understanding heart. But to seek after understanding is like seeking after truth and as the bible talks about, the truth sets us free. So when we seek after the truth, we are in turn seeking after God, because is the truth and the light.

  19. 25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.

True love doesn’t desire division but unity.

  20. If we had had one request of God, what would it be? Would we ask for wealth ora longer life?

““Here’s what I want: Give me a God-listening heart so I can lead your people well, discerning the difference between good and evil. For who on their own is capable of leading your glorious people?””
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭3:9‬ ‭MSG‬‬

    We have His attention. Ask.

  21. 28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

Solomon did not seek his personal gain or benefit but his request from the Lord was very wise. He had in his hands the most powerful nation, for the Lord was with them. His petition was help me do my job in the position you have placed me..if we can put it in those words. He humbly asked to have the knowledge to judge the people. In essence to know how to do this ministry to lead your people Lord. Imagine if we all took this approach to the minstires we are privileged to serve and lead in. Lord, you have control over eveything for it is evident here in this chapter when God says “if you continue to walk in my ways I will lengthen your days”, therefore help me to have the knowledge to connect with, serve, lead and minster to your people that they may grow strong in you, that Christ might be birthed in them… Imagine what other blessings the Lord might just add on to us. Solomon did seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and the Lord added on to him blessings.
Proverbs reminds us: ” the fear of the Lord is the beginig of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Provb 1:7

  22. 1 Kings 3:11-12 (KJV Strong’s)

    11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

To discern judgement one must have wisdom and understanding. Wisdom is the right application of knowledge. Understanding is knowledge of the purpose of reason for a thing.

As leaders, not only do we need to know what to do, and when to do it, but we also must have an understanding of the purpose for why we are doing it.

God sees the end from the beginning. He knows what is needed, and why. To be like him we must not only be about action but also understanding.

    Proverbs 4:7 (KJV Strong’s)

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

  23. 9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

    11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

  24. 12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

    Ask and ye shall receive.

  25. 11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

Solomon desired the righteous things the Godly gifts and so because of that God blessed him greatly. God also gave him more than just spiritual gifts. If we focus on loving what Gods loves and seeking his face in stead of his hand he will bless us!

  26. We can learn a lot from this. Instead of opening our mouths and saying something stupid, we can allow God’s wisdom to judge for us. God’s judgement is different from man’s because God knows all the facts. Often times we only know part of the story. It be hooves us to know the facts before formulating an opinion.

  27. 12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
God is not a predictable God! He always blesses us with way more than we expect! God is so awesome! He works in mysterious ways! He and untime God yes he is!!

  28. “Solomon answered, “You have been very kind to my father David, your servant. That’s because he was faithful to you. He did what was right. His heart was honest. And you have continued to be very kind to him. You have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. “Lord my God, you have now made me king. You have put me in the place of my father David. But I’m only a little child. I don’t know how to carry out my duties. I’m here among the people you have chosen. They are a great nation. They are more than anyone can count. So give me a heart that understands. Then I can rule over your people. I can tell the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Who can possibly rule over this great nation of yours?””
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭3:6-9‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Lord I need wisdom and a heart of understanding

  29. 28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

Wisdom from God far exceeds mans wisdom. Man can only remember the past, experience the present, and envision the future. God is able to make the past, present, and future your Now! Granting those that He desires to give great wisdom to the ability to have what they need for each situation they face.

  30. The thing that caught my attention today was that both the ladies in the story were harlots. I never payed any attention to how they got the babies. They got the babies in an unrighteous way. Even though they were no holy in the way they received the child, the king way just in how to help the mother keep her child.

It’s that same way with God. Sometimes we are blessed with something through our unrighteous behavior. Even though we get the blessing in the wrong way, God is just to us. We will be able to nurture the blessing and watch it grow if we are willing to give it back to watch it live.

  31. In this chapter we see how God was pleased with Solomon’s response when asked what he wanted. Solomon could have asked for anything; but, he asked for wisdom to lead as we see in Verse 9 MSG “Here’s what I want: Give me a God-listening heart so I can lead your people well, discerning the difference between good and evil. For who on their own is capable of leading your glorious people?” God not only granted him his desire; but, blessed him with all that he did not ask for (wealth and glory).

  32. And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

The Lord blesses those that obey and follow his commands.

  33. Asking wisdom of God pleased Him and there was no man wiser than Solomon. No matter what you do for the Lord or where you go in life, we each need the wisdom of the Lord to live righteously in this generation.

  34. At Gibeon the Lord appears to Solomon in a dream, promising to grant whatever he desires. He could have asked for mighty armies, fame and riches but he desires wisdom to lead the Lords people. He is very aware of his youth being 20 years old when he became king and lack of experience. His request wasn’t selfish to glorify himself but the Lord and it pleased God so much that he gives him even more.

  35. “In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.”(1 Kings‬ ‭3:5‬ ‭KJV‬‬)

Everyday in a Christians life we all know that payer is the number one thing to get closer to God and better our relationship with him, we also know that if we ever need something or a healing we can trust on our God that he will be there when we call upon his mighty name. We know the late nites and the waking up from the voice of lord saying Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

  36. 9Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”

When I read this, this is what I would ask of God also. I would like to have an wisdom and understanding of people, and how to handle situations. That would be awesome. Atleast we can thank God, the older we get the wiser we get.
