1 Kings 13

1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.

3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.

6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

9 For so was it charged me by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.

11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,

14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back:

21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,

22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.

25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.

27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.

28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.

29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

  1. This chapter spoke to me about how important it is to keep on track and not let anything distract you from God’s will. Many things will come in different forms to test, to bring discord and distract you from following the will of God in your life. One must be careful not to listen to every voice; but, pray for the Lord to help you discern and clearly hear His voice to make wise decisions…..for the Lord cannot bless bad ones(decisions).

    • I agree this is a good chapter to talk about distraction in the century we can’t effort to let this word influence and distract us from God’s blessing and what god had in store from us

  2. 6. The king cried out to the man of God, “Please ask the LORD your God to restore my hand again!” So the man of God prayed to the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored and he could move it again. NLT

It would have been tempting to tell him to ask his calves that he worshipped to restore his hand.

    8. But the man of God said to the king, “Even if you gave me half of everything you own, I would not go with you. I would not eat or drink anything in this place.

    18. But the old prophet answered, “I am a prophet, too, just as you are. And an angel gave me this command from the LORD: ‘Bring him home with you so he can have something to eat and drink.'” But the old man was lying to him.

    19. So they went back together, and the man of God ate and drank at the prophet’s home. NLT

He wasn’t tempted by riches, but he was led astray by a lie. Every time someone says they have a word from God, it isn’t necessarily true. Use discernment and wisdom; if it contradicts other Word of God, leave it alone.

  3. 33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

So the LORD sends a lion to tear up a man of God who was disobedient. He didn’t devour him. He just let him be an example to everyone else. Apparently that wasn’t enough for Jeroboam. He just didn’t get it. Be observant and open hearted. If you can’t learn from others mistakes than its gonna be harder for you. Jeroboam didn’t even skip a beat when it came to doing evil against God.

  4. 1 Kings 13:18 The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he was lying to him.

    • 1 Kings 13:24 As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it.

The danger of saying God spoke to you when he didn’t!

We see people grieving or going thru situations ad we tend to have the desire to speak some words to them. This is when temptation kicks in, and are tempted to speak as if God had spoke to us. The harm that could bring is astronomical. Never say God said if God didn’t say. We become liars and could be putting someone on a path to destruction.

  5. 17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

Be careful who you listen to, not everyone who claims they have a word of God for you actually has a word from the Lord. Sometimes it is just their own words. If contradicts the word of God or a word from the man of God in your life, then you need to stay away from it.

  6. iLove to Grow in the Word
1 Kings 13:4 NLT When King Jeroboam heard the man of God speaking against the altar at Bethel, he pointed at him and shouted, “Seize that man!” But instantly the king’s hand became paralyzed in that position, and he couldn’t pull it back.

We must be careful not to point our fingers at the man of God. This is a perfect example of a person that did not respect the man of God. No matter what the man of God says, we should always show respect and honor. If we do try to destroy the man of God, our growth will become stunted until he makes intercession for us.

1 Kings 13:6 NLT The king cried out to the man of God, “Please ask the LORD your God to restore my hand again!” So the man of God prayed to the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored and he could move it again.

  7. Obeying God’s voice.

I understand this passage today. This means we have to be not tempted and follow what the world wants us to do. We should always adhere to God’s commands first being a child of God. We are His first.

  8. GROW IN GOD

People that are used of GOD are often the subject of invitations. A king who is an earthly leader, is intrigued by the spiritual gifting of GOD. People used of GOD must remain committed to GOD, through intense and strong temptation from worldly attractions and financial gifts.

The man of GOD must OBEY the voice of GOD and not be swayed by gifts that are made available by politically powerful people. As we GROW IN GOD we become more valuable to the world. We must guard our hearts and speak only what GOD speaks and GO only where GOD says go.

    iRepent

  9. 26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.

    Wow to be disobedient… 😳

  10. when the profit who had gotten him off track heard it he said its the Holy man who who disobeyed God strict orders.
As i was reading the chapter this moring i have interped LIES and also situation that caused the profet to make the other PROfIT LOOK DISHONEST
DONT BE SUPRISED IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU EVEN IN THE GREAT CHURCH YOU ARE IN

  11. nd he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,

When God gives you a commandment it needs to be in your heart and no one or nothing not even an angel should be able to turn you from the word of God. Hold fast to what God’s commandments are and don’t look for any other voice but His.

  12. 1 Kings 13:18 The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he was lying to him.
We must listen closely to the voices we have in our lives. We must make every effort to pray and seek God about any major decisions because if we don’t it could kill us.

  13. 26 When the prophet heard the report, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the Lord’s command. The Lord has fulfilled his word by causing the lion to attack and kill him.” (NLT)

Two lessons are to be learned from this: stay focused and don’t allow yourself to be so easily distracted, also, be cautious of the words some people speak.

  14. 18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

We should be careful to obey God and not men.

  15. 1 Kings 13:15-19 (NLT)
    15) Then he said unto the man of God, “Come home with me and eat some food.”
    16) “No, I cannot,” he replied. “I am not allowed to eat or drink anything here in this place.
    17) For the LORD gave me this command: ‘You must not eat or drink anything while your are there, and do not return to Judah by the same way you came.'”
    18) But the old prophet answered, “I am a prophet, too, just as you are. And an angel gave me this command from the LORD: ‘Bring him home with you so he can have something to eat and drink.'” But the old man was lying to him.
    19) So they went back together, and the man of God ate and drank at the prophet’s home.

This passage of scripture made think of 1 John 4:1 (NLT) “Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.”

If the LORD has told you something, and someone else comes along and tells you opposite of that, then try their spirit, see if it adds up to the Word of God.

YOU have to KNOW the WORD of GOD!

  16. 1Kings 13:15 So the prophet said to him come home with me and eat. The man of God said I cannot turn back and go with you nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place. I have been told by the word of the Lord you must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came. The old prophet answered I too am a prophet as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord, bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water. But he was lying to him. So the man of God return with him and eat and drink in his house. While they were sitting at the table the word of the Lord came to the old Prophet who had brought him back. He cried out the to the man of God who had came from Judah this is what the Lord says you have to defied the word of the Lord and have not kept the command of the Lord your God gave you. You come back and ate bread and drink water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will be not be buried in the Tomb of your ancestors.

We must be obedient to what God says and pray to what man says

  17. “21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee,”

We must over the voice of God whenever he commands something for you. It’s important to be aware of his voice … Only God knows what is best for your life . Obedience will lead to humility , humility will lead to direction , and direction will lead to your purpose ! Let God take control!

  18. 23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

  19. 26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him.

Judgement from God. I would rather have my momma give me a whooping rather than God judge me. But his word is true and it will judge us.

  20. 16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

It’s important to be careful who we receive the word of God from. Not everyone stands on the truth.

  21. 4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

HALELUJAH!!! THAT’S THE GOD I SERVE!!!

    Psalms 105:5 KJV
Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

  22. Wow – the importance of knowing what God has told you to be true, and not be distracted from the goal, no matter who says what. Deception is cunning and crafty and will try every avenue possible to distract and pull us away from our purpose, vision and goal. But we must have our face set like a flint and no matter what or who comes to lure us away we must be like Nehemiah…….I can’t and won’t come down until the goal is met.

  23. 17 For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him

Not everyone who says they have a word from the Lord truly do, be careful who you let speak into you!

  24. 26 When the prophet who had gotten him off track heard it, he said, “It’s the holy man who disobeyed God’s strict orders. God turned him over to the lion who knocked him around and killed him, just as God had told him.”

Just because people have titles on what to call them doesn’t mean they always live up to it. The man said he was a prophet but he deceived the holy man, be careful on who you let speak to you in your life! You also have to keep your focus on God at all times and not get side tracked on other things of this world!

  25. 1. Why would an old prophet of God lie to the prophet when he just told him that the Lord said don’t eat or drink here. Jealousy that God used another prophet and not him?
    2. Why did the prophet with the message allow himself to believe a man who says he was a prophet, convincing him to eat and drink there?

This shows the subtlety of the devil. To Eve, it was a subtle change of God’s word and here it is a man who says I’m a prophet like you and God says come eat and drink. We must beware of the tricks and deceitfulness of the enemy, especially as a man of God with the message. As preached tonight, put on the whole armor of God so we are able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Obey God completely.

  26. 33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

Many people even after a warning or message and being witness of God’s power in their lives, like Jeroboam whose hand was restored, even after all those sings still choose darkness in their lives and repent not from their evil ways. We are to be the messengers and tell and lead people to Christ. They are resposible for their response.

  27. 1 Kings 13:21-22 (KJV Strong’s)
21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee, 22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

    Check with God first.
I think the big problem was he wanted to eat and drink and rest so much that he was looking for a reason to do so.

God does change his mind sometimes but if he told you directly then he would tell you directly if he wanted you to do differently for some reason.

The lesson to be learned here is trust. Ask God if the word from another is really from him or not.

  28. 6 Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede with the Lord your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before.

Intercede- intervene on behalf of another
How many people around us are crying and waiting for us to intercede for them. The Lord has given us His Word not so we can keep but to share and be that difference other people are waiting for. When I’ve done outreach I have seen how so many people are hungry for the Word of God, we have prayed for them, spoke to them about God, and some just want a friend. Outreach is the heart of the church and what will grow the kingdom of God. I have learned to love it more and more because you just never know what need someone might come to when I knock at their door. People need to know that despite how crazy this world is, there is a body of believers that truly care about their salvation. No fear because I am covered by His blood.

  29. 34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

  30. Don’t believe everything you here.

18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

Pastor is alway telling us to be careful of people that say that they have a word from the Lord for you. The truth is God can speak to you any time he wants but most of the time we are not listening. The man of God here had heard the voice of God and was sure of his task at hand. Someone else came and said that Gos had said something else. If God had changed his mind why wouldn’t he speak to the man of God again? If your sure it was God that spoke to you then don’t let anyone talk you out of it.

  31. “After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.” The word of God (Jesus) said he remained unchanged. One that knows the truth, has been told the truth, and refuses the truth is literally playing with fire (eternal fire). Likewise one that is too close to a fire can be burned. There are two that remain, which one knows the truth, has been told the truth, and still refuses the truth. One that chooses a habitual liar can also be burned. Dear God, remove those that will not heed your word. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  32. “He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.” Both were used of the Lord; however one had become a liar. We should be careful whom we listen too, as the lies of another could cost greatly. At the same time we must stay before the altar lest we likewise cost another. God help us to see the importance of seeking you, in Jesus name.

  33. It’s the enemy that wants to kill steal and destroy. Your mind has the mindset of righteousness but the enemy likes to creep in to make you think the opposite from doing the will of God. It’s up to us to seek God even when we are unsure of what our next move ought to be before we make the wrong one.

  34. This chapter is a disturbing one. The Bible knowledge commentary writes a good piece below:

A second prophet was living in Bethel and was old. These are important clues. Old age sometimes tends to make one lazy and complacent. This man’s complacency is further suggested by his willingness not only to live in the territory of the apostate king but at the very center of the king’s false system of worship.
Why the old prophet rode after the prophet from Judah is not stated. Perhaps he simply wanted to visit with a younger, more faithful servant of the Lord. Or his motive from the beginning could have been jealousy and his intent could have been to destroy the younger prophet’s ministry.
13:15–19. In response to the faithful prophet’s refusal, the old man claimed direct revelation from God through an angel who had told him, he said, that the young man should forget his former instructions from the Lord. So the prophet of Judah, not suspecting that the old prophet was lying to him … returned to Bethel and ate with him. The apostasy of Jeroboam had infected even a prophet who seems to have had the same selfish motives and practiced the same brazen disobedience as the king. The spirit of apostasy was spreading quickly and was already reaping a grim harvest in Israel.

We would all do well to stand by the word of God and not let anyone, not even acclaimed men of God, sway us from our path. The importance of our ministries will determine the severity of or punishments when we disobey. Let all of us who feel a call to a ministerial office take heed of this truth.

  35. Disobedience will cost you more than you can ever imagine. It can cause heartbreak, death, and destruction. Trust in the voice of God to guide your footsteps to avoid these things.

  36. Putting your trust in the wrong people will lead down the road of destruction and death. The man of God was lied to, tricked, and lead into the wrong direction. Just because someone is a old prophet doesn’t mean they are looking out for you, maybe even lead to test you. After the man of God is mauled by a lion he picks up his remains and lays them into his own tomb he will return to when he also dies. Then declares that the word spoken against the altar of Bethel will and against all the shrines on he high places in the towns of Samaria will come true. What I find here is the importance of obeying the word of God that he gives and if someone speaks otherwise no matter who it is if it doesn’t line up with God it’s rebellion and leads to death either spiritually or physically.

  37. 1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

A man of God will be
    1. Praiser- he came out of Judah
    2. Lives by the words of God

  38. 4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him.

  39. 4) And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.
    (KJV)

It is important that we follow the LORD’s commandments, so that we don’t fall into a situation like Jeroboam. Dried bones is like being dried spiritually- having no hunger for the Word of God. Reading daily and gaining wisdom, knowledge and understanding will keep our bones healthy We need to seek God daily and obey his Word; in addition, not fall into evil ways.

  40. “The man of God said, “I can’t go back to Bethel with you. I can’t eat bread or drink water with you there. I’ve received a message from the Lord. He told me, ‘Do not eat bread or drink water there. Do not return the same way you came.’ ” The old prophet answered, “I’m also a prophet, just like you. An angel gave me a message from the Lord. The message said, ‘Bring the man of God back with you to your house. Then he can eat bread and drink water with you.’ ” But the old prophet was telling him a lie. The man of God returned with him. He ate and drank in his house.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭13:16-19‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Do not waiver in the word God has given you.

  41. 4When King Jeroboam heard the man of God speaking against the altar at Bethel, he pointed at him and shouted, “Seize that man!” But instantly the king’s hand became paralyzed in that position, and he couldn’t pull it back.

It must be difficult at times for a man of God to accept a prophets word. But true prophet is lead by God, and we and our pastor are to recognize he is being led by God. We too are to guard ourselves against false prophets.
