2 Kings 1

1 Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.

2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.

3 But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?

4 Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.

5 And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are ye now turned back?

6 And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that thou sendest to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

7 And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?

8 And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

9 Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down.

10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

11 Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.

12 And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.

14 Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.

15 And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

17 So he died according to the word of the Lord which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.

18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

  1. 10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
Notice how simple the prayer of Elijah was. .. He didn’t pray for an extended period of time he didn’t beg God He just believed that God heard him and that he would answer his prayer. and each time that he prayed that prayer God Answered immediately we must trust God with our prayers and believe that he hears them and that he will answer them.

  2. iLove to Grow in the Word
13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.

Humility before the man of God can save you from a fiery death. We must always approach Gods servants humbly as they speak over our lives. We see here that the Angel of the Lord was right there with Elijah and he was never alone.

  3. 3 But the angel of the Lord told Elijah, who was from Tishbe, “Go and confront the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is there no God in Israel? Why are you going to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether the king will recover? (NLT)

I thank God there’s no other name I know! At the same time though, we must realize there are people who don’t know to call on the name of Jesus. Lead us today God to those who are in need of You that we may be able to share the greatness and power of Your Name!

  4. 1 Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.

Watch for there are many things in this world that can cause you to rebel. Moab rebelled after the death of Ahab. Even the journey of someone dying can cause us to rebel against the will of God if we do not stay close to His word and promises. We must guard our hearts and submit to God so that rebellion stays away from our life. When it begins to creep up it can kill you spiritually. But if we continue in the Word of ;God faithfulness to all we are taught rebellion will flee. The whole world is in rebellion but we the bride of Christ will surrender our will to His in victory over the enemy! We will live and not die!

  5. 14 Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.

  6. ATTITUDE

Idolatry is defined as offering worship to an object or opportunity. The King of Israel sought an answer about life, but failed to reach out to the life giver. He sought counsel from an idol (dead god) instead of calling on the only true LIVING GOD (JESUS).

102 men died because they came to the man of GOD with the wrong ATTITUDE. 2 captains and 100 men were burnt up by GOD because of their ATTITUDE.

The 3rd time it was different.

    MSG
13-14 The king then sent a third captain with his fifty men. For a third time, a captain with his fifty approached Elijah. This one fell on his knees in supplication: “O Holy Man, have respect for my life and the souls of these fifty men! Twice now lightning from out of the blue has struck and incinerated captains with their fifty men; please, I beg you, respect my life!”

    Compare

    MSG
9 The king sent a captain with fifty men to Elijah. Meanwhile Elijah was sitting, big as life, on top of a hill. The captain said, “O Holy Man! King’s orders: Come down!”
10 Elijah answered the captain of the fifty, “If it’s true that I’m a ‘holy man,’ lightning strike you and your fifty men!” Out of the blue lightning struck and incinerated the captain and his fifty.
11 The king sent another captain with his fifty men, “O Holy Man! King’s orders: Come down. And right now!”
12 Elijah answered, “If it’s true that I’m a ‘holy man,’ lightning strike you and your fifty men!” Immediately a divine lightning bolt struck and incinerated the captain and his fifty.

A bad attitude in our approach to the man of GOD is very costly. It is truly a high risk to challenge GOD and be wrong, all because the man of GOD does not tell you what we want to hear. 2 captains and 100 men lost their lives because of a carnal, backslidden leader who wanted to seek the world, flesh an idol (Baalzebub the god of Ekron) rather than seek the LORD GOD (JESUS).

Seek the LORD JESUS while he may be found.

  7. 16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

Whose report will you believe? I will believe the report of the Lord!!! No need to search for answers anywhere else He holds my life in His hands.

  8. This story speak to me about why are we depending on other people to give us the answer.my god is the answer to ever thing he’s is the truth and the way

  9. 13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty.

Humbling yourself before the man of God will get you a lot further than arrogance or a bad attitude will. It wasn’t just the captain that was spared that day but so were all his men. And by showing those that follow you how to have a spirit of humility, you might just save them too. When you show respect toward your leaders not only do they take notice but so will God and those that are following you!

  10. “And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.” The word of Jesus (God) identified respect. One can rest assured God, as we read here takes note of disrespect. An elder (anyone older then self) should always be acknowledged (greeted), and then referred to as; Sir or Ma’am. Last names should never be used unless there is a title in front of it; Bishop, Pastor, Elder, Brother or Sister, and Mr. or Mrs. Albeit one can do as one wants, which the Judge (Jesus) will let one know, one day; unless of course, fire falls first. Dear God, help us (me) too become more respectful of your man of God and others (your creation). God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

    • Amen!

I pray that JESUS will revive an ATTITUDE of respect in the people of GOD and that we would IMPACT the world with the Gospel and Spirit of JESUS.

  11. “And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.” Sadly many today do not see or understand, or even care what is taking place. The Lord is not simply someone that is called upon in time of need, which we all will experience. Although the Lord may answer it may not be the answer we want to hear, especially if there was no prior relationship. God help us see the necessity of a relationship with you, in Jesus name.

  12. We could learn a few things from the third captain – he was obedient, courageous, and humble. It took great courage to be obedient and go up that hill where the other 102 men had just died a fiery death! Then, we see where his humility accomplished the task that the others’ arrogance could not.

  13. 15 And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the kinng.

If God is before thee none can be against you! The battle is the lords.

  14. “But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baal–zebub the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.”
    ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭1:3-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Is there not a God? Why should we go to any other source to enquirer of our future? The Lord of lords and King of kings is the beginning and ending. He knows all and see all. He know our end from our beginning. And He is our creator. If there’s a question  ALWAYS ask the Creator.

  15. “9 Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty.
And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.”

It does not matter how many spirits of darkness may come and try to destroy you sprititually! It does not matter how strong the storm may be ! I pray this generation rises against the kingdom of evil and calls for a fire of the Holy Ghost to rain down on the lost!! I pray that there will be a mentality of perseverance in us , to fight this spiritual battle and regardless of how many armies of darkness the devil may bring …. There is a GOD that will destroy all evil , that souls will be saved! Chains will be broken ! Addictions will be memories! Sicknesses and diseases will turn to healing testimonies! Victory is OURS!

  16. 10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

Many times people have more confidence in ourselves or others than in God. When Elijah spoke he knew that more than the words entering into the ears to those listening; his words would enter into the ears of God.

  17. 2 Kings 1:16 (NLT) “And Elijah said to the king, “This is what the LORD says: Why did you send messengers to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether you will recover? Is there no God in Israel to answer your question? Therefore, because you have done this, you will never leave this bed you are lying on; you will surely die.”

If you have some questions – JESUS is the answer.

  18. How many times does God get our attention?

I know that when I’m not living correctly God has to get my attention from what so little sin is be setting me and fix it so it won’t happen anymore.
Addictions are the worse sin because you can’t stop unless The Lord stops it for you.
I pray to Jesus to remove anything out of my life that doesn’t glorify Him.
Thanks Jesus for setting me free from that ugly sin.

  19. 13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty.

GOD’S mercy and Grace IS GREAT!!! My GOD IS GREAT !!!
It’s in those hard situations when you can hear the voice of the LORD telling you not to fear, for HE IS WITH US ALWAYS!!! Even when a person has different religion or views my GOD so merciful , HE still kept him!!!

  20. 10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

It doesn’t matter how much the odds seem stacked against you, God is on your side and nothing is too impossible for him.

  21. 12 And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty.

It’s important to have the goods that you talk about. Elijah’s response was if I be a man of God let the first come down from heaven, and the fire of God came down.

Being genuine is important. Our integrity and credibility is challenged when we don’t have the good we profess to have.

  22. It’s evident that seeking other Gods will lead to death because The Lord is not putting up disobedience. King Ahaziah worshipped false Gods, he didn’t have a change of heart nor of repentance when he found out that he was about to die for seeking False idols. God had no mercy for him.

Lord I pray that backsliders and lost souls turn to you and seek you always no matter the need.

  23. 2 Kings 1:9-10 (KJV Strong’s)

If I be a man of God then let fire consume thee and thy fifty. This should be the prayer of every saint. If we are truly people of the Lord then let fire from heaven consume those around us. Let the Holy Ghost be poured out just like the Prophet Joel declared. Let the spirit of almighty God consume others and may the Lord be glorified in this region!

  24. 10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty.

I want a strong faith like this.

  25. 13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty.

  26. 14 Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight.
15 And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

  27. 13 And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty. And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.

What a difference this man’s attitude and humbleness made when he came to Elijah with the same message. Our approach to God should also be how we approach the man of God, with respect! Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom….

  28. 16 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die.

Not only do we learn that we must approach the man of God with respect but also that God requires us to fear him. Do you know have a God to ask of me? I can almost hear those words… Why then go playing the harlot seeking the attention of idol, beat down dead that cannot answer…. Our Lord wants relationship and he is a jealous God. Oh if he just would have sought the Lord Jesus instead of an idol perhaps he would have received instruction and gotten up from his sickness. He is the God that heals. Respect, fear, honor…He is worthy of our praise!

  29. Attitude is everything

When you approach any situation the attitude you display is more important to the recipient than the actual content of the conversation. Bringing a smile and a pleasant word to a bad situation is like putting water on the fire.

  30. 2 Kings 1:2 Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, “Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.”

Why is it that our nature always looks to the world to find help or a solution? We preach and talk about how mighty and powerful our God is and how he can do anything, but yet in the mist of our situations we look else were to find help.

Isn’t this a slap in the face? How we can trust God for this and that but when it comes to difficult things we look for solutions, trying to help God be God and that we tend to make things worse.

If we learn to put God first in everything, we could change everything in our lives.

  31. 15 And the angel of the Lord said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him.

Disobedience and lack of submission to God leads to death.

  32. The kings of Israel continue to disregard God and His law. This brings judgement on this King and leaves him bedridden until his death. We would be wise to consult with God in all of our issues and not try to get around him in our search for answers.

  33. 3 But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?

4 Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.

  34. 10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

  35. 2 Kings 1:13 So the king sent a third Captain with his 50 men this third Captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. Man of God he begged please have respect for my life and the lives of these 50 men your servants! See fire has fallen from heaven and consume the first two captains and their men. But now have respect for my life! The angel of thr Lord said to Elijah go down with him do not be afraid of him. So Elijah got up and went down with him to thevking.

  36. “Elijah told him, “ GOD ’s word: Because you sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub the god of Ekron, as if there were no God in Israel to whom you could pray, you’ll never get out of that bed alive—already you’re as good as dead.””
    ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭1:16‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Otha more than just saying a blind vision and walking away. People have to deal with the choices that they make.

  37. 13Once more the king sent a third captain with fifty men. But this time the captain went up the hill and fell to his knees before Elijah. He pleaded with him, “O man of God, please spare my life and the lives of these, your fifty servants. 14See how the fire from heaven came down and destroyed the first two groups. But now please spare my life!

Just like us, how many time does our God, parents or friends tell us something before we learn from it. It usually take 2-3 times. Good thing the 3rd captain realized what happened, and he wanted to make sure he would not suffer the same faith as the others.
