2 Kings 3

1 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

2 And he wrought evil in the sight of the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.

3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

4 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.

5 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

6 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.

7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.

8 And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.

9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.

10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!

11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

14 And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.

15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.

16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.

17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

20 And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

21 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.

22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood:

23 And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.

24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.

25 And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.

26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.

27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

  1. The Moab King desprate sacrifice of his Son is often paralleled in the ancient near east. The verse provides an instant where the bible supplments the information from secular history.

  2. 7 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

This is but a light thing for the Lord.
We in our human nature think everything is such a difficult matter. When in Gods eyes the age of the Universe the g4andest of all says this is but a light thing. He took the sun and made the waters appear as if it was full of blood. It made the enemy fearful. We are covered by the blood of Jesus. He is the Light!,,,,,, Light pushes put all darkness and the blood covers us cleansing us, protecting us. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
So when we face the challenges of this day and we feel the enemy is on our trail we can say to “that fox”, Awe 8 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will delifer the Moabites into your hands!

  3. 18. And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord : he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

We often worry and fret long over a situation, but when we finally decide to find out what God says about it, we find that not only is He willing to help us, it’s but a light thing in His sight – if only we would go to Him sooner!

  4. Is God’s will our first priority?

11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

Why is the Lord and His purpose for our lives not our first inquiry? These kings were already on their journey; to the point that without water their efforts would fail. Then, they think, oh yea, let’s ask God to help. Even Elisha was feed up with them: 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee?

How many times do we have to step into trouble before we learn to seek God and His wisdom before we start on our journey? I know that I have made this mistake too many times to count. If not for the grace of God; no telling where I would be today. However; God continues to look after the hard headed as he does the soft of heart. I hope that I can learn to seek His guidance before starting on journeys – like I should.

  5. 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

Again we see that because of the submission of Elisha God gave him faith and favor in the eyes of the people. God continued to use Elisha because he had submitted to and received the spirit of Elijah

  6. LABOR PROCEEDS THE BLESSING

Believers are often frustrated that GOD has not done what has been requested. However as we learn here, GOD promised the BLESSING, but the people were expected and required to prepare for it.

Make the valley full of ditches. DIG DITCHES to see your miracle BLESSING.

    MSG
16-19 He then said, “God’s word: Dig ditches all over this valley. Here’s what will happen—you won’t hear the wind, you won’t see the rain, but this valley is going to fill up with water and your army and your animals will drink their fill. This is easy for God to do; he will also hand over Moab to you.

  7. 18 But this is only a simple thing for the Lord, for he will make you victorious over the army of Moab! (NLT)

The other day while listening to the radio I heard this comment between songs, “Never overestimate the power of your enemy, but especially never underestimate the power of your God.” My God is master of the universe; He made the sun, the moon, and the stars that he so carefully placed and named. How could we ever think that He’s unable to handle our pesky, little, mole hill of a problem? God is in control and He is faithful to see us through with simple blessings and even on through the mightiest of victories!

  8. 16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.

Make ditches full of the blessings of God. For everything that happens to us is for His Glory!!!! everything the Lord gives us are blessings from God. Thank you Lord for all the blessings you have given me and my family.

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word
11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

The great thing about Jehoshaphat is that he always wanted to ask what God thought about the situation. Just in the previous chapter, Jehoshaphat is enquiring to the Lord for counsel. This pleased the Lord and also gained respect from the prophet.

14Elisha replied, “As surely as the lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I wouldn’t even bother with you except for my respect for King Jehoshaphat

We must always remember to enquire of the Lord and put him first.

  10. 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
When we get tired of worrying and turn over the troubles to the Lord and stay out of them it looks so easy. We make things hard for ourselves thinking we can do whatever we want and instead of asking God for direction and guidance and letting him guide our path and take care of our enemies we want to help, news flash God doesn’t need our help when we turn all our troubles to him. Leave your burdens at the altar and don’t pick them up and walk around with them anymore. God wants to help us and if we listen to his still small voice we will not have as much troubles holding us down.

  11. 16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.

  12. 2 Kings 3:17-19 (NLT)
    17) You will see neither wind nor rain, says the LORD, but this valley will be filled with water. You will have plenty for yourselves and your cattle and other animals.
    18) But this is only a simple thing for the LORD, for he will make you victorious over the army of Moab!
    19) You will conquer the best of their towns, even the fortified ones. You will cut down all their good trees, stop up all their springs, and ruin all their good land with stones.

Giving them enought water to quinch their and their animals thirst was an easy thing for God. He was also going to make them victorious over their enemies, and they were going to be conquerors.

JESUS does the same thing for us. He Is The Fountain Of Living Water. When we are thirsty, he quinches our thirst. BUT He does so much more than that for us. He has made us VICTORIOUS through Faith over our enemies, and He has Made us MORE THAN CONQUERORS.

    Thank Your JESUS!!

  13. 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

It always pays to enquire of the Lord for direction. When we don’t enquire what He would have us do, we take Him out of the equation of our day, or life. Victory came to those who took the time and waited for the answer of the Lord.

  14. 17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

So many things that the Lord does for us, we do not see. There is many thing that the Lord does behind the scenes. Right now, you are getting blessings in your life and you don’t even know it. All we have to do is believe and have faith, and God will show it.

  15. 2 King 3:14 Elijah said and surely as the Lord Almighty lives whom I serve if I do not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I wound not pay any attention to you. But now bring me a harpist. While the harpist was playing the hand of the Lord came on Elijah and he said this is what the Lord says I will fill the valley with pools of water. For this is what the Lord says you will see neither wind nor rain yet this valley will be filled with water and you your cattle and your animals will drink.

  16. thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

  17. 10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!

19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones

Oh how gracious the Lord is his mercy is turly forever he he will supply all our needs he won’t leave stranded but he will provide. Thank u Jesus

  18. 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

Never doubt in our God! What may seem impossible to the human eye is nothing compared to what our God can do!

  19. 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother.

Thankfully there was a king who pleased the Lord or else they would have been left on their own without water. It pays to inquire of the Lord and get his direction, then your journey is blessed. Help me seek you Lord first, then make plans and not the other way around. Life would be so much less complicated and stressful. Thankful for the word today!

  20. “24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.”

  21. 17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

  22. 4 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.

5 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

The king of Moab rebelled against Gods chosen people and suffered for it. True Israel wasn’t living for God but they were still his people. The king lost many people that day even his oldest son, massive damage throughout the land, and resources were compromised. The Kings action affect countless individuals.

We are the people of God, washed anew with the blood of Christ and his name applied. Be careful rebelling against the children of God, it has far reaching affects.

  23. 26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.

27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

The king of Mohab suffered because of rebellion and disobedience! We as children of God must be obedient and NOT rebel against the authority that God has placed in our lives! This includes parents, children, family, pastors, mentors, teachers, instructors, and elders! Saying yes sir or yes mame is NOT improper! Its respect! So the next thing that you feel like disrecting someone remember the same thing Mohab went through you can as well!

  24. 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

Our God can do anything, as long as we have faith in him and be patient God can do miraculous things!!

  25. 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

The world rejects GOD with every twisted and corrupt step taken but as soon as trouble comes they know who they are to run to!!! Discernment in throwing your pearls to the swine sometimes is a difficult decision to be made, ………living in Spirit and in Truth is A MUST!!!

  26. “But now bring me someone who plays the harp.” While that person was playing the harp, the Lord’s powerful hand came on Elisha.”
    ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭3:15‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

The music we listen to is very important. We must guard our heart.

  27. Our victory is in Jesus. We cannot afford to stray away from the teachings of God. We have been given power to tear down everything the enemy tries to build up against us. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.

  28. 2 And he wrought evil in the sight of the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.

3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

It is not time for us to be lukewarm but we must continue to be on fire for God in all things. It says he cleaved to the sins of Jeroboam which was Idolatry. He was able to put away the image of Baal which was the one he would have been most familiar with because he grew up in the home of his father and mother yet he did not totally bids the strongman of idolatry. He was lukewarm and he will later suffer the same fate as Jeroboam. Let us learn form this and when God is dealing with us and drawing us to cleans ourselves from something it would be wise for us to do it with everything that is within us.

I know that deep down inside if we had to make the choice of giving up God or giving up sin, we would pick God with our voice but what does out actions say?

  29. 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

Good question. Is there not a man of God that can offer guidance?

  30. 26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.

27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him,   and returned to their own land.

Rebellion is the sin! We as saints of God should make sure we don’t take being rebellious light. It is not OK and God hates it. Anything that is sin make God cringe. If we want to be like him we shouldnt compare sins. Sin is sin!

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king. – 1 Samuel 15:23

  31. 2 Kings 3:11 (KJV Strong’s)
11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

Elisha was known because of his service. The people knew who to go to in need because of the life he chose to lead.

  32. 18 This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands.

To the Lord it is easier to fill the valley with water, pure for men and horses to drink, then to give Moab in there hands. In our perspective, we sometimes make other things hard to do. We can try and try at certain things and when we finally give it to God, God simply says I’m going to do this supernatural things, oh yeah and that hard thing you’ve been struggling with, that’s easy for me, I’ll fix that to.

So don’t get discouraged, everything is easy for God.

  33. “And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.” The word of Jesus (God) identified reverence. Jehoram wanted nothing to do with God, or Elisha (the man of God), until he was out of options (no hope, no cure, no way out, etc.). The word of God (Judge) also identifies they would not have received or heard anything, if it were not for reverence for Jehoshaphat. One that will not obey the word of God and not just the areas one wants, or reverences the man of God (listens to), may find oneself as Jehoram did; however there may not be a Jehoshaphat nearby. Dear God, help us hear and obey, before it is too late. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  34. “And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.” In their eyes their resources were gone, there was no hope and no options remaining. Albeit it was recorded that this was “but a light thing” for the Lord. We must believe if we are ever going to receive that nothing is impossible for the Lord, and we must never forget what has been recorded so that we can boldly proclaim in our situation “this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord”. God help us to see as you do, in Jesus name

  35. The Moabites rebellion brought the unity of three kings. The king of Israel had been rebelled against and took arms with the kings of Judah and Edom. Although they didn’t follow the Lord fully they knew who he was. In the middle of their seven day journey they run out of water and hope when Jehosaphat makes a wise choice to seek out the man of God Elisha for guidance. At first Elisha doesn’t seem willing to help them but after some listening to the soothing sound of the ministrel he is able to hear from the Lord that he will deliver Moab into their hands. We shouldn’t only turn to the man of God in the middle of distress but when he is trying to guide us on the right path. A path these kings may not have been taking but after this miracle they will know who the Lord truly is because no matter how they or others may make pagan burnt offerings only the Lord can save them.

  36. 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

What are your struggles and greatest battles? What do you have need of? What things are weighing you down? We shoul be encouraged with this word and tell our biggesr difficulties, this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord. What a mighty God we serve!

  37. “And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.”‭‭(2 Kings‬ ‭3:18‬ ‭KJV)

God wants to show himself mighty in our lives and too often we restrict him from doing that. We can get stuck in situations that we lose hope and that is when our faith and hope in God need to arise like it does for Jehoshaphat. He recalls God and the man of God he needs guidance. He will give you more than you expect or ask. For they not only got the water that they desperately needed supernaturally but they also got the victory over the Moabites.

  38. 6 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.

7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.

  39. This chapter records the use of music and the prophetic. The practice of music and prophetic utterances are not exclusive to Judaism. Many pagan cult religions record the same. The pseudepigrapha Book of Enoch claims music was used for worship as well. Music, culture, and religion are hard to separate in antiquity, and I would argue the same today. They all go together. This is why music is more powerful than many realize.

  40. Our words, our actions, our music; these are all things in which should represent what kind of person we are and what god we choose to worship. This chapter shows how easy it is to say one thing and do another..

  41. Digging a little deeper and trusting what the Lord wants you to do is not always easy in our earthly thinking. We like to complicate things and make them bigger than what they really are. We need to trust in the Lord, get out of the way and let God be God in our lives.

  42. 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.

12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

  43. 17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.
What we see as great miracles, God is desirous to do so much more

  44. “Joram son of Ahab began his rule over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. He was king for twelve years. In GOD ’s sight he was a bad king. But he wasn’t as bad as his father and mother—to his credit he destroyed the obscene Baal stone that his father had made. But he hung on to the sinful practices of Jeroboam son of Nebat, the ones that had corrupted Israel for so long. He wasn’t about to give them up.”
    ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭3:1-3‬ ‭MSG‬‬

    Not as bad…
It says he was bad, but not as bad as his mother and father. It doesn’t really matter if you are “not as bad” because it is still bad. If we would just seek after the Lord then maybe “not as bad would turn into someone who followed after God.

  45. 13“Why are you coming to me?”c Elisha asked the king of Israel. “Go to the pagan prophets of your father and mother!”

But King Joram of Israel said, “No! For it was the LORD who called us three kings here—only to be defeated by the king of Moab!”

When the going gets tough, now they want to consult the one true God. These kings want the things of the world, but spiritually they don’t want a relationship with God.
