2 Kings 4

1 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

5 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.

6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.

10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.

12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.

14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.

15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.

17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.

19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother.

20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.

21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.

24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.

25 So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite:

26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well:

27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?

29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.

30 And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.

32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.

33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord.

34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.

35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.

37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.

38 And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.

39 And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not.

40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

41 But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

42 And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.

43 And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the Lord, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.

44 So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the Lord.

  1. 4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

  2. In the beginning of this chapter we see how even when we think we have nothing, if we stop and think about it; we all have something we can give…..our time….our talent, etc. If we are obediently willing to use it for the Lord’s kingdom, He will bless it. The middle of the chapter spoke to me about going above and beyond as the Shunammite woman did. She knew he was a holy man of God and she knew who to call upon in the time of distress. The end of the chapter shows the faith of Elisha as part of verse 43 says “Elisha said, “Just go ahead and do it. God says there’s plenty.” Trust in the Lord and he will meet your need.

  3. I wonder how many times we have missed our blessing cause we didn’t do what God said cause we thought it sounded weird or we just didn’t have the faith. What would of happened to the son if the mom hadn’t obeyed the man of God. We bring troubles upon ourselves cause we think that we don’t have to listen to the man of God, God put a man of God in our lives to save our souls. God help us to not turn our ears away from the guidance and counsel of our Pastor but instead we take hold of the word and hide it in our hearts.

  4. 23. And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.

She didn’t accept that the current situation was the final outcome; instead, she had FAITH. She was probably one of the women referred to in Hebrews 11:35

    1. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
    32. And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
    33. Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
    34. Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
    35. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

  5. “And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid. And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.”
    ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭4:16-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The Lord can bless you for your sacrifice and giving. He will honor you and give you things you always wanted. But your unbelief can still ruin you.

  6. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.
This lady had made room in her life for a man of God. She had positioned herself to be blessed by creating a room in her house. She was making room for her miracle! And when tough times came she new exactly what to do with her son. Because of her faith and willingness to be faithful God healed her son!

  7. A PROBLEM A PREACHER A PROVISION

Often Ministers are approached to provide for the problems of people. However the perception is all too often that the preacher should take from his own personal resources and pay for the needs of others.

We witness a perfect illustration of the opportunities and challenges of Ministry for ages.

    1. She was a WIDOW.
    2. She had a NEED.
    3. She went to the PREACHER
    4. The Preacher did not give her money, nor did he do any work for her
    5. The Preacher gave her a simple plan to use the resources she already had.
    6. The WIDOW obeyed the PREACHER and was BLESSED
    7. The BLESSING was in the OBEDIENCE

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

    • Her obedience was better than his sacrifice.Amen Pastor! This is a lesson for us because it is really easy to get yourself in trouble trying to be someones hero when we should point them to the real hero, Jesus!

  8. Taking care of the people of God.

This lady may have had ulterior motives but they were not relayed in scriptures; only that she saw a need for the man of God and she was able to fill the need. Not everyone had the ability to build a room on their home for evangelists that pass through – God is not asking that of us. In fact, God did not ask that of this woman. However, she realized the need and was able to supply this need.

I wonder if the men of God that we do know might have a need that we supply. Maybe one might need an extra bag of groceries; maybe another might need an evening of babysitting while another might need some monetary assistance. Not all of us can supply these needs. Some of us probably can.

Do we pray for our Godly people? While we may not have too many prophets that travel among us, we do have Godly people that are doing the best they can that might would likely benefit from an unexpected kindness. Let’s pray for the people that God places in our path and be sensitive to His urges. We might be surprised how a small gesture of kindness may pay huge rewards.

  9. 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.
    Hallelujah!

  10. 30 And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

Prayer will always affect the outcome of your situation!

  11. 43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked. But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’” 44 Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of theLord.

I have been in this situation where I question God…why? But I’ve learned to just obey His commands I know he won’t set me up for failure. He is so real and never doubt what great power He has!!!! He created everything in this world, made us, owns everything… Why would we even doubt!!!! Jesus has all power and will never let you down. In fact its the other way around, we get so caught up and scared about things that are in His hands. Always trust in God and watch the miracles and blessings that will be manifested in front of your own eyes.

  12. The faith and obedience of this chapter is tremendous! God will truly bless and take care of His people, as long as, we are obedient and faithful to Him as He is to us. These are just three examples we read of in this chapter, my God hasn’t changed and He’s still ready to bless those who obediently serve!

  13. Following God’s commandments and instructions through his written word and spoken word only good will come to us. Taking care of God’s anointed as also a blessing.

  14. Look at your blessings!!!!!

2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

Before you begin to complain look at your blessings!!! Look at the resources that you still have begin with that and watch God multiply what you already have!!!!!

Phillipians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

  15. 2 Kings 4:39 One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wold vine and picked as many events as its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned he cut them up into the pot of stew though no one knew what they were. The stew was poured out for the men but as they begin to eat it they cried out Man of God there is death in the pot and they could not eat it. Elijah said get some flour. He put it into the pot and said serve it to the people to eat and there was nothing harmful in the pot.

He said bring meal and cast it into the pot together with pottage which they had taken out of it and there was no harm in the pot. Which alteration was not from any virtue in the meal but from the power of God. We must pray before we eat our meals that God would bless it and sanctified it.

  16. 2 Kings 4
This chapter is full of MIRACLES.
Vs. 7 – A widow woman sells her oil and pays her debts.
Vs. 17 – The Shunammite woman has a son.
Vs. 35&36 – The Shunammite’s son dies and is brought back to life.
Vs. 40&41 – There is death in the pot of pottage, but when Elisha cast meal into it, it is good to eat.
Vs. 42-44 – 20 loaves of barley and full ears of corn feed the men and plenty was left over.

Today is the Day for MIRACLES !!

  17. 2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

God is able to take little and make it much. All He is looking for is willing vessels willing to do the leg work necessary for Him to multiple the resources.

Today, Lord I declare you will send resources to the families of POFW to further the Kingdom of God. Take the little we have and multiply it for your use.

  18. I just love this chapter because it describes four miracles that happened in the Bible
2kings 4:1-8. Speaks about god useing a man of god to filled up many jar of olive oil to help pay the widow debts

2 kings 4:7-37 speak about god useing a man of god to raise a little boy up from the dead

1kings4:38-41 speak about god useing a man of god. Stew that was poison that was not able to eat But with a little flour added they were able to eat it without being harmed

2 kings 4:42-44 speaks about god useing a man of god feeding hundreds. Of people just with twenty loaves of barely and have some left over

If god can use eilsha to do all these thing then i know he can use us

God can use you to speak life and the word of god to a stranger on the street

Or maybe god can use a teenager to raise a man from the dead

Of teacher a bible study like he did me attendance of 12 students this year 5 new comers that never be to p7 bible study and to the Pentecostal of Fort Worth

God use my sister and i to speak light in my teacher darkness moments to our teacher she told us i want that joy and peace you have i want this fire you have towards God i have to go. Check out your church she came to the first service we had at the new building

God can used you just have faith and let god used you

  19. 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.

  20. 31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing.

In this miracle, Elisha had to be persistent. He says in the beginning that the Lord did not show him the need of this woman, yet he responded to her with compassion and determination. Sometimes our miracles come with just a spoken word through the man of God and sometimes we must be persistent to receive it! Declare the word of the Lord with faith believing and be persistent for your miracle.

  21. “15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.
16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.
17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.”

The word of God is always the final word. you must understand that in order to get your breakthrough you must get to. The words “get to” meaning having strong faith and making an action to determine a reaction. Your breakthrough, will be the moment you can get past the negativity , criticism , financial problems , sicknesses, doubt, etc. Does not matter how much you lose being faithful to God, because there is much more to gain in the heavens that will NEVER be compared to what this world has to offer. Thank God for his promises and faithfulness !

  22. The key of how big your miracle is.

3Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.
4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

First the question. How big do you want your miracle?

The answer. We first must understand that we are the reason of how big our miracle is. Think of it like this. The rises to of the richest person in the world called you and said.” I’m at the bank. How much do you want?” And with hesitation in your voice you say,” $1000,$ 1,000,000, or $10,000,000.” And they said,”OK it will be at your house in 30 min. See you then” but most of us would think. This isn’t real. But what if it was and you said $1000? What then? And you found it it was legit. How bad would you feel? After the fact that you then knew you could have asked for more and didn’t.

This is how we treat God and his blessings. God says ,” I want to give you….. how much do you want? And we say the small portion. But why? Pastor has taught in the past about the poverty mentality. And it’s very true. We have put God in this box and told him he can only stay in these perimeters. But take the limits off. God , the creator, asked what do you want. And all we can say is,” whatever you have for me. When I was a child my dad would ask what I wanted for Christmas, and the funny thing is I told him. I didn’t care how much it was. Just that I wanted it. And God is our heavenly Father who created all things. So why ask small. When he can do big, bigger, biggest.
I am a testimony of this happening. Because a situation happened where I was going to get some money. I told God that I was believing for the greater amount and more. But the people that I talked to said you should be happy with whatever you get. And I would have been. But my God is great than that. Long story short I got more than what was expected. Because I know what my God can and will do. So be blessed and believe for the greater!!!

  23. 2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house?

Sometimes people will think of their problem or situation and feel that its doom and there is nothing they can do…they just need a miracle. That may be the case, but God still expects us to work and have faith believing that He will provide. She went to the man of God for instructions of what could she do. She didnt just said here is my huge need and stopped but rather she poured out kept giving and the Lord kept supplying.

  24. iLove to Grow in the Word
“Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.””
    ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭4:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Hospitality will always be rewarded by God. The Lord will bless those who bless , and repay those who lend.

  25. 2 Kings 4:26 (KJV Strong’s)
26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.

When we have a true understanding of our lives in light of eternity we can live with confidence that no matter the situation it is well. The Lord does not want us to be beat up and torn apart. However he allows things to come to our lives to prepare us, mold us, and make us. There was great purpose for the woman losing her son. This showed the power of God and drew her closer to him.

  26. 6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

When God tells us to do something, sometimes our reaction is that it’s crazy and that there is no way we can do that. But if we just listen to God’s voice and obey, he can deliver us out of a sticky situation and give us blessings we cannot contain

  27. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

How much faith do you have?

  28. 30 And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

Even when we feel lonely or we feel like there is no one around to comfort us in our time of need, God is still there for us for whenever we need him!

  29. 43 And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the Lord, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.
44 So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the Lord.

Once again The Lord stretches the food to feed the crowd…

  30. “And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.” The word of Jesus (God) identified giving. The man of God took what was given unto him and gave it unto those that were present. A true man of God will give; whereas one that only claims to be will simply take. One should be very thankful that one has a man of God that “gives unto the people, that they may eat.” One should also be present, elsewise one cannot receive. Dear God, bless the man of God that gives unto others. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  31. “And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.” There was more than enough oil to fill all the vessels that were empty; however they could not fill those that were already full. The Lord still fills vessels today that are open and receptive (empty) with his Spirit; whereas vessels that are full of self or cares of life, have no more room. God help us be willing too empty self, so that we can be filled with you, in Jesus name

  32. God cares for his people. Even when you think that you might not amount to much, you matter to God. As Christians we must remember, that our God will never leave us nor forsake us. He has always taken care of his people and he always will.

  33. 3Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

Many people allow their natural eyes to magnify the need which causes the spiritual eye to not see the purpose. You see, beverything we go through has purpose. We must be drawn to purpose and not to problems.

In her need she had lost her husband the one that provides for her needs here on earth but in her purpose she gained Jehovah Jireh the one that provides for her needs here on earth and eternal.

  34. 2 Kings 4:43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.

Matthew 14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Just like Peter with Jesus, Gehazi had seen many miracles done by Elisha and he still doubted. It’s amazing that we can doubt the anointing and power invested in our leaders at times. Obedience has proven to be much greater not just than sacrifice but greater than our doubt. The widow with the problem had more faith in the prophets words than Gehazi and Peter did Jesus. So here inlays another problem, are you submitted? A greater blessing is in store for those that trust, not just in God, but in the man of God.

  35. Use what you have!

2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

When you grow up in a small farming town with little resources you learn how to use what you got. Making fence staves out of tree branches that we cut down didn’t cost anything but hard work. Making retaining walls out of the stone we found in the feilds didn’t cost anything but hard work. Fixing flats in the field with a can of either and a match was far less expensive than stopping everything and heading to town. We learned how to use what we had. My Dad would have us look through our fingers at arms length away then through the same fingers right up against our face, the. He would say it’s all in your prospective. Someone would say we don’t have anything, others would say that we have everything we need. In this passage I believe that God was pointing out that perspective issue. With God and a little of “nothing” you have everything you need. It’s all in how you look at it. The poverty mentality would say “we have nothing”. The antrepunuer in me would say ” let’s make something”

  36. “The woman left him. After that, she shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her. And she kept pouring. When all of the jars were full, she spoke to one of her sons. She said, “Bring me another jar.” But he replied, “There aren’t any more left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.”
    ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭4:5-6‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

    God our Provider

  37. 1 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

This reminds me of praying for individuals in the altar. Sometimes they don’t need a special prayer or for you to “call down fire from heaven,” they just need to know they aren’t alone and there’s someone else praying with them. The individuals already have the anointing they need for their situation, but they need help getting directed into the mindset and focus required to get it pouring out into their situation.

In response to the widow’s words, the prophet first asked her “what shall I do for thee?” He seemed to be confused why she would come to him, as if somehow he would have the resources available to help her or that he would have some influence over the creditor that would bring peace to the situation. From a logical standpoint, if someone is in debt, unless there were unique circumstances in which they became indebted through fraud, theft, deceit or some other extenuating circumstances beyond their control… then that debt is usually that person’s responsibility to take care of. If you go to a restaurant and order food, you don’t go crying to the man of God when the check comes saying “I don’t have the money to pay it!”

If the person (like the husband) is unable to pay it off due to death, then obviously his house will be left to face the responsibility. No indication was given that the creditor was a harsh or cruel person. And no indication was given that the creditor didn’t need that money back! If you owe money, there’s no reason to get it in your head that your creditor should just “forgive the debt to bless you” as if it wouldn’t make a difference for them to lose that money.

The man of God looks at the woman and probably wonders why this is a problem for her. In Israel, the Jews had it in their Law that enslavement was a way to pay off debt, but Jews were to treat other Jews with kindness and there was provision made in the Law for them to be released when the debt is paid off (to paraphrase.) Having her sons be enslaved wasn’t the end of the world, and technically she should have been able to be taken care of in her community as a widow. Yet at the same time, Israel was in sin and respect for the Law was not high and there wasn’t necessarily a guarantee that each situation would work out as the Law said it should.

The prophet didn’t have a solution for her but asked what she already had in her house. When he helped her connect with the resource she needed, he also helped direct her in using it in a way God would bless. When she obeyed, that anointing took care of the bondage and debt, but it required work. Not every solution will come in “just a couple verses;” sometimes we have put the “work” in “work it out” but if we will submit to God’s ways and work in a way He blesses, then we can trust Him to help us.

When ministering to others, sometimes they need something small (a kind or encouraging word, prayer, a hug, fellowshipping together over lunch, etc) that may not seem like a lot to you but could have massive consequences in their lives as a result.

  38. Two women received the miraculous I’m different ways even though they both had desperate situations with their sons. They needed the hand of God to move quickly and couldn’t do it by themselves. The Shunnamite woman received a miracle son for her hospitality to the man of God. The oil kept flowing for the widower of a prophet unto Elisha, who needed to pay the creditors before they take her sons.

  39. Elisha got ritually unclean by laying in the dead boy. Sometimes the work of God is going to have us get our hands dirty. We can’t let out piety get in the way of the miraculous.

  40. 27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.

28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?
Jesus knows the desires of my heart, and will use every situation in my life for His glory.

  41. 40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

Know what you’re feeding people, physically and spiritually. Not knowing is a big risk to take

  42. God is only limited by our faith. The the little widow woman would have had more containers for the oil, then oil would have continued to pour.

Likewise the Holy Spirit is symbolized as oil. The Holy Spirit pours out on the vessels that are open for a filling. As long as there are people/vessels to be filled, the Holy Spirit will pour itself out on those who are willing.

  43. 9 She said to her husband, “I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.”

It’s our responsibility to help the men of God when they are evangelizing. This woman did not demand from her husband lets build a room, but asked her husband with his approval. Any man would be easily offended by having another man under his roof, but they agreed together before building the room.
