2 Chronicles 25

1 Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.

3 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.

4 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.

5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.

6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.

7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.

8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.

9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.

10 Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.

11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.

12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.

13 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.

14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.

15 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?

16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.

17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.

18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.

19 Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?

20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.

21 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.

22 And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.

23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

24 And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

25 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.

26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?

27 Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.

28 And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

  1. So God gives this guy the victory and He immediately comes back and worships idols? And disrespects the prophet of God? This is ridiculous. I can only compare this to if you win the lottery or something and you come back and start worshipping the money….? This guy has blown my mind. Jesus, help us to always have a grateful heart and to put you first. Let us always fall down at your feet and worship the one who made everything. Jesus, help us keep pure hearts that are devoured to you. In Jesus name! Amen.

  2. Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.

Why after winning battles would you seek after the things of the world. The world is seeking what we have. Amaziah had a whole council to help him. He would not listen. If we are not willing to listen to what the prophet of God has to say and we go seeking after false gods the world we gave none to blame but self. It is our choice to make. If we would only listen and apply what has been spoken into our lives.

  3. 2 Amaziah did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight, but not wholeheartedly.

20 But Amaziah refused to listen, for God was determined to destroy him for turning to the gods of Edom. (NLT)

Amaziah immediately set himself up for decline by not wholeheartedly following and pleasing God. We see later that he turns to other Gods. He wasn’t wholeheartedly following God, then he eventually turns to other idols; seems like a man who didn’t really value God and His word. Amaziah was a man who did what he saw was best, and denied God and His servant and clearly led himself to destruction. Don’t be like Amaziah!

  4. Verse 15 AMP “So the anger of the Lord burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, “Why have you [b]desired the gods of the people who did not save their own people from your hand?” One must be careful what and who they desire. Is it from God or will it bring you closer to God? If only Amaziah would have asked these questions and heeded/listened to the warnings that God sent by the prophet.

Let us share the love of God and bless our community today in unity!

  5. 9. And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.

God will replace much more than what we give up in the world when we follow Him and His plan. If God asks us to give up something, He has something greater already planned.

  6. 2 Chronicles 25:8-9
    8) But if thou wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
    9) And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.

“For God hath power to help, and to cast down.”
We serve an Omnipotent God. He has unlimited power and is able to do anything. He is all-powerful.
Ps. 62:11, “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.”

“The LORD is able to give thee much more than this.”
Eph. 3:20, “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”

Our GOD is so POWERFUL – He Can Do Anything!!

  7. “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.”
    ‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭25:2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord but acted as if it was more of a “have to” than a willingness, thefore he gave a half hearted obedience and had a half hearted walk with God. We must search our own hearts and cast out any resistance to obeying God, and live for Him wholeheartedly!!

  8. THE RISK AND RETURN OF EVERYTHING

Amaziah was faced with a very difficult decision, GOD sent a prophet to him with warning and promise. We fail GOD when we begin to calculate the cost, the investment, the time, the effort, the energy or the faith that we invest into our Kingdom of GOD labor.

Amaziah was so focused on the investment that he did not even calculate the return. His question was about what he ha already invested, not the favor of GOD that accompanied the investment. The prophet told the man of GOD that “the LORD is ABLE to much more than this”.

Whatever our investment may be today, KNOW that the LORD can GIVE us much MORE than we invest.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  9. 8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.

Remember today God has put us in battle to win the souls of the newcomers we will see today. So be prepared for the harvest that God wants us involved in today. But don’t do it by your own might, let God do the battle through you. Let him work through you to reach those souls that are looking for an answer to something they know they are missing in their lives. Let them know that the answer they seek is Jesus!

  10. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.

What do you mean “not with a perfect heart?” He did what God and the Law expected him to do! Isn’t that good enough?
This is the perfect example to those that do it because is their obligation, or it is what is expected of them, and you find them say I GOT to do this or I GOT to do that!! There is no LOVE involve on their service.
1 Cor 13:1 If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it;[a] but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

It is time for self evaluation and see what really motivates our ministry. Lord help us do everything in your love with Joy, and don’t no it all unto you. Col 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; In Jesus Name Amen

  11. JESUS today YOU will SAVE me.

8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.

  12. 7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.

Nothing is wasted when we obey the Lord. Whatever investement you think you may not het any return out off will not be wasted when we head to the voice and counsel of the Lord for He the Lord is able to abundatly multiply and bless.

  13. 2 Chronicles 25:4 (NLT)
4 However, he did not kill the children of the assassins, for he obeyed the command of the Lord as written by Moses in the Book of the Law: “Parents must not be put to death for the sins of their children, nor children for the sins of their parents. Those deserving to die must be put to death for their own crimes.”

This still applies today. We all will stand in judgment for the things that we have done. God is a good God and will not hold us accountable for the actions of others close to us if we didn’t have anything to do with that. We all make our choices.

  14. 27 Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.

God has done so much for amaziah, and what do he do? Amaziah turns away from serving God and worshipping idols!! God help us lord not to forget where you brought us from and what our purpose is. It’s not about us but it’s about Jesus!

  15. 8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
Our strength and help comes from the Lord. We must remember that God is in charge and he controls our future. He elevates and he brings down. He blesses and he curses. When we fully grasp that we can rest assured knowing that God will meet our needs!

  16. Everything that the enemy stole. God has given it back to me. We must take back what the enemy stole from us. It’s ours. Our families, our finances, our lives. All of it. Take it back.

  17. 5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.

    Can you handle the war?

We must understand that the crowd can’t handle war but the faithful strong servant can. We then have to decide who we are? Are we faithful or are we lacking the ability to properly use the tools of war. You can place a sword in a child’s hands and He most likely will cut himself but if you place a sword in the hands of a skillfully trained man, he will execute the task at hand with precision.

This chapter also showed us that after the battle is over we cannot afford to put down our swords and pick up a idol.

  18. “Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?” The word of God (Jesus) identifies foolishness. Amaziah with the help of God had just defeated those that put their trust in false gods. There are many today that are putting their trust in self, this world, and false gods all of which are essentially equal in that they are powerless. Therefore one would be very wise in putting ones trust in the one and only God whose name is Jesus. Dear God, bless those who trust in you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  19. “But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.” We can be confident in knowing all will be well if we are obedient; whereas we should not be, if we are not. The Lord has all power and authority, which we must never forget. God help us too be steadfast in you that we may be strong in our battles, in Jesus name.

  20. iLove to Grow in the Word
2 Chronicles 25:8 NLT If you let them go with your troops into battle, you will be defeated by the enemy no matter how well you fight. God will overthrow you, for He has the power to help you or to trip you up.”
Wow, God has the power to help and to cast down… God knows what he’s doing and he’s not worried about the numbers that are against us.

  21. v9 ” And the man of God answered, “The LORD is able to give you much more than these.”

We just have to be willing to believe the LORD and prove HIM.

  22. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.

I believe that we should notice that it was quick to mention that he did not have a perfect heart before God. Even God mentioned that David had a heart after God.

We can lie to the whole world but God knows our heart. When our intentions are not right, it will come to light with our actions.

  23. 14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
15 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?

It’s hard to understand how this king could bow to the very gods of the people he had just battled with-gods that could not help in time of need-then tell the prophet not to tell him what God thinks of it. He must have already known it was wrong but was somehow convinced he would be ok.
We are not able to fight against our God and prosper. Just when you turn your back on God, you might find you have a great need and who will you turn to? Do not be deceived by lure of things of this world. The things of the world may entertain you, but they cannot save you.

  24. 16 But the king interrupted him and said, “Since when have I made you the king’s counselor? Be quiet now before I have you killed!” So the prophet stopped with this warning: “I know that God has determined to destroy you because you have done this and have refused to accept my counsel.”

Like so many, when they feel powerful and in position of authority, they let their pride come into full view. They no longer need advice from anyone, and will do their own thing. No matter what position we hold, we should always humble ourselves and be ready to listen to others.

  25. “When Amaziah returned from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir. He set them up as his own gods, bowed down to them and burned sacrifices to them. The anger of the Lord burned against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him, who said, “Why do you consult this people’s gods, which could not save their own people from your hand?””
    ‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭25:14-15 NIV

When you see that other people have the victory over something, we need to ensure that we don’t pick up what they just got victory over. If we pick up what they just defeated, we go into the same bondage they came out of.

  26. 16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.

If we submit to a man of God and then do not submit to his counsel, how can we then get angry with the man of God when things start falling apart? I can understand that sometimes during the heat of a battle we can sometimes lose focus on the forest because of all the trees. However, children of God should have ingrained in their minds and thoughts of who God is and what His purpose is for our lives. We are not immune to life. There are ebbs and flows to life we all must endure. The difference is we have God on our side and His strength to see us through the trials of life.

16 Amaziah interrupted him, “Did I ask for your opinion? Shut up or get thrown out!” The prophet quit speaking, but not before he got in one last word: “I have it on good authority: God has made up his mind to throw you out because of what you’ve done, and because you wouldn’t listen to me.”

  27. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.

No human will ever be perfect because only Jesus is. So to be perfect in hearts means that he does not a man after God’s own heart. He lives right but doesn’t seek God. Following traditions and rules may be the right thing to do, but their is so much more to a relationship with God that he is missing.
