Ezra 4

1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;

2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.

12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.

13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

14 Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

17 Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.

22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

  1. This chapter reminded me about Pastor’s message last night. The time to GO is NOW and GROW.. We cannot afford to waste any time in reaching for our city and our loves ones. We have the privilege to work in God’s great kingdom NOW and we must take off running for as the song
    “Great God” says:

    Great are Your ways,
    Great are Your works,
Great are You Lord in all the earth,
    Great is Your power,
    Great is Your strength,
Great are You Lord and greatly to be praised,
    Your greatness, Your famous name,
Is exalted in all the earth,

    Glory, Glory, Hallelujah,
Glory to the God of Israel
    Glory, Glory, Hallelujah,
All the earth will sing You’re a great God,

We won’t stop til the whole world knows,
That you’re a great God, great God

  2. 23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

You can try to stop us, but our God is greater.

  3. 1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;
2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him

Our adversaries is always aware of everything we do, and will often disguise itself and behave in such a way that we may think its on our side, We must be mindful of who is for themselves and who is for the same cause we are, as we build and increase in the Temple.

  4. 5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
We are going to have family and friends and co-workers who try to persuade us to go the way that is wrong. It may seem right in their eyes but wrong in the sight of God. We don’t have time to lose our sight on what lays ahead for us, which is the kingdom of heaven. It’s not time to get frustrated and all upset when someone crosses your path and ruffles your feathers that is going to happen, when that happens square your shoulder back and like Pastor said last night get in the position to take off and run (GO) and God will guide you.

  5. Ezra 4:4-5 & 23-24
    4) Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building.
    5) And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
    23) Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews and made them to cease by force and power.
    24) Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

This made me think about Pastor’s message last night on “Running the Race.”
This chapter starts out by saying, “NOW when the ADVERSARIES of Judah and Benjamin…” Their adversaries weakened their hands and troubled them, and they made them to cease their work of the house of God by force and power.
Galatians 5:7 says, “Ye did RUN well; WHO did hinder you…”
WHO is the advesary in your life that is trying to weaken your hands and trouble you? WHO is the adversary trying to cause you to cease your work in the kingdom of God?
Hebrews 12:1, “WHEREFORE seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily beset us, and let us RUN with patience (endurance, persistence) the RACE that is set before us.”

Don’t let any adversary cause you to stop Running the Race.
If you fall, get back up and finish Running the Race. The scripture says, “Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise;…” (Micah 7:8)

The RACE is not to the swift, but the one who endures to the end shall be saved.

    KEEP RUNNING!!

  6. Ezra 4:4 (MSG)
4 So these people started beating down the morale of the people of Judah, harassing them as they built.

I believe recent events point to a Cyrus like restoration of America. But as I was reading this it occurred to me that not everyone wants America to be godly again. America has been known for its help with Israel, its financing the spread of the gospel to foreign lands, and its foundation of one nation under God.

Yet the enemy does not want prayer back in schools, the Ten Commandments back on the court yard, and marriage to be sanctily performed the way God originally intended.

As we approach the greatest years of revival and harvest the world has ever seen we must be on the look out for the accusers, insulters, and discouragers.

The word that came to my mind was diligence.

    2 Peter 1:10 (KJV Strong’s)
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

Diligence means (Olive Tree Enhanced Strong’s Dictionary) g4704. σπουδάζω spoudazō; from 4710; to use speed, i.e. to make effort, be prompt or earnest: — do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward), endeavour, labour, study.
    AV (11) – endeavour 3, do diligence 2, be diligent 2, give diligence 1, be forward 1, labour 1, study 1;
to hasten, make hasteto exert one’s self, endeavour, give diligence

In other words it means Go and don’t quit.
Or as Pastor put it last night RUN

The only thing I saw negative about the story today was the number of kings they went through and yet the work still wasn’t completed.

We must work while it is Day for the night comes when no man can work.

  7. 1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;
2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him
You must watch the enemy . He knows what our strengths and weaknesses are and he will exploit them if possible. We must stay on our guard stay diligent because our adversary the devil is seeking to destroy us.

  8. iLove to Grow in the Word
1The enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were rebuilding a Temple to the Lord, the God of Israel. 2So they approached Zerubbabel and the other leaders and said, “Let us build with you, for we worship your God just as you do. We have sacrificed to him ever since King Esarhaddon of Assyria brought us here.”

Notice here that the enemies of Judah offered to give a helping hand…

The thing about it is; everyone that offers a helping hand might not have your best interest at hand. The enemy uses people the majority of the time to try to distract us from our purpose. Sometimes the enemy uses folks to spread gossip while pastor is trying to build the house of the Lord. It’s always good to reject the help of those who try to lend a helping hand but are not true friends of the man of God.

  9. 24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Don’t stop building the house of God!

We are his temple. We must grow not only in him but his kingdom too. It’s time to get back the passion that we have lost for the lost. It’s time to GROW.

  10. There’s always going to be opposition when doing work for the kingdom of God. I’ve always heard to rejoice when there’s some resistance because it’s a sign that greatness is in store and the enemy wants to try and stop it. As long as we’re faithful and obedient though, God is on our side and the enemy will not pravail, but the will of the Lord will always prevail.

  11. UNEXPECTED OPPOSITION

In the process of fulfilling the will of GOD and building HIS temple we will encounter UNEXPECTED OPPOSITION. What is unique is the fact that the people of the land weakened the hands of the Judah (PRAISE). This is a major reason reason we should do everything in our power to defend and protect our PRAISE.

We may be tested with UNEXPECTED OPPOSITION on our journey to fulfill the will of GOD in our lives and PRAISE is what invites the LORD to act on and in our behalf.

Do not allow anything to distract, detour or decline you of PRAISE to the LORD.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  12. 1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;

2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

These 3 verses show that we are at a constant war and when we start to grow and do works for the kingdom, the enemy is going give us tormoil and is going to rush in like a mighty wind. We will be weakened but we will prevail when Jesus is with us.

  13. 4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

Be careful when you amongst the world, not only the world but friends family and close relationships that they are not weakening your walk with God. Build up one another with words of affirmation. Build up the kingdom with words of declaration of strength. Words are strong and words can weaken and destroy. We must pray that everything we put our hands to will be for the kingdom every word that comes from our mouths to left up and edifying. We can not become weakened we must continue to build up the kingdom of God !

  14. 3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

When building the kingdom of God we are guided and directed by him, and when an adversary tries to interject himself & deceive, God will reveal it to use as we daily seek him. It’s verse 4 that troubles me as scripture a curse for not coming to the aid of God’s people…“Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.” Judges 5:23 We must help build God’s kingdom as we run this race. There is something that everyone can do: pray, greet, bake, teach, invite, call, sing, clean…

  15. MSG – 3 Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the family heads of Israel said to them, “Nothing doing. Building The Temple of our God is not the same thing to you as to us. We alone will build for the God of Israel. We’re the ones King Cyrus of Persia commanded to do it.”

No one can build your dream like you can. God gave you the vision. You must not let others come and detour your vision by doing what they want to do. There will be naysayers, but if you preserve God will provide the means and the fortitude to bring your vision to pass.

    Don’t settle for less!

  16. 5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

You can try to stop but you wort get that fair
We wort stop the race is not over

  17. 4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

Notice that it said ‘troubled them in building’ and NOT ‘[stopped] them in building.’ The people of Judah were in weakness but that didn’t stop them from building. In life we will go through situations where we feel weak and pressing forward will be very tough. But we must not quit. Our problems are only temporary. In the end we’ve overcome and have victory.

  18. 23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Our God is greater our a God is stronger. God you are higher than any other otger… We got to reach this city! The work of God must be completed.

  19. 3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other leaders of Israel replied, “You may have no part in this work. We alone will build the Temple for the Lord, the God of Israel, just as King Cyrus of Persia commanded us.” 4 Then the local residents tried to discourage and frighten the people of Judah to keep them from their work. 5 They bribed agents to work against them and to frustrate their plans. This went on during the entire reign of King Cyrus of Persia and lasted until King Darius of Persia took the throne.[a]

Just because you may hear or be told something you don’t want to hear doesn’t mean you go and disobey God or the man of God. The residence that were told something that they didn’t want to hear went and tried to break the unity of the people of God. That’s why as the people of God we have to be careful of what we listen to and let nothing break our unity of our mission for Gods kingdom! Thank you God for keeping our church in unity with you and our man of God and stay together for our Revival now conference! What a mighty God we serve!

  20. 15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

When you try to build up the house of God and when you try to spread the gospel and his good news, there will be people that will come up against you. They will try to stop you from spreading the word of God, but don’t be intimidated, because no weapon formed against you shall prosper.

  21. 23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

We can be sure that when we are doing a work of God there will be opposition from the enemy. We should continue to trust in God for we are more and mightier because of God who is for us.

  22. “Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building”. The word of God (Jesus) records their deceptiveness. History is full of many that have used similar tactics in accomplishing their own personal agenda; nevertheless the Judge (God) recorded it all, and still does today. One that utilizes deceptive or coercive tactics to accomplish ones one agenda is doing just that, one’s own agenda and not Gods. Dear God, open eyes and ears. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  23. “Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.” They claimed to be as they were; however they turned out to be only for self. This is one reason why the word and prayer is so important, as it can help with recognizing falseness. God help us and protects us, in Jesus name.

  24. Frustrated Purpose
4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Frustrate in verse 5 means to split or divide. This leads me to believe their goal was to cause division or disunity. We must examine our motives, whose side are we really on? The side of the people who weakens praise and causes division or the side of our man of God; walking in purpose and ready to send up praise?

I don’t know about you but as for me and my house we are on the Lords side. We are here to build the house of God.

  25. People asked to help and the builders rejected the help. So the people became a thorn in the builders side. I wonder what difference it would have been had they allowed it.

    • They probably would have sabotaged the work. Notice the Word says, “Now when the [adversaries] of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel…”

These folks were up to no good. I believe it was wise for the builders to reject the help of those who would try to cause division.

      • Perhaps, but when the “adversaries” were written after the fact. Maybe, just maybe, the Israelites helped make them adversaries by rejecting their help. Then feelings were hurt and the “adversaries” wanted to “get even.”

It wouldn’t be the first time Israel created an enemy for themselves.

Were these “adversaries” Samaritans? Something I wanted to look up, but my study time is given to Romans 3:12-5:21 for the time being.

  26. Opposition brings out ones true character. If you are consistently being opposed maybe you should stop and look at your character from a different angle rather than your “normal” perspective.

  27. vss.4-5 Then the people of the land tried to discourage the people of Judah. They troubled them in building,
and hired counselors against them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius ki g of Persia.

GOD’S people are destined for Victory.

  28. “Old enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building The Temple of the GOD of Israel. They came to Zerubbabel and the family heads and said, “We’ll help you build. We worship your God the same as you. We’ve been offering sacrifices to him since Esarhaddon king of Assyria brought us here.”

Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the family heads of Israel said to them, “Nothing doing. Building The Temple of our God is not the same thing to you as to us. We alone will build for the GOD of Israel. We’re the ones King Cyrus of Persia commanded to do it.” So these people started beating down the morale of the people of Judah, harassing them as they built. They even hired propagandists to sap their resolve. They kept this up for about fifteen years, throughout the lifetime of Cyrus king of Persia and on into the reign of Darius king of Persia.”
    ‭‭Ezra‬ ‭4:1-5‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Lord give us a Spirit of discernment. And protect us from our enemies.

  29. Preaching to myself right now:
Just because something has come against you, causing you stop in your tracks, does not mean that the plan is over because work has ceased. God has given you a burden, a desire to weigh down your heart for a reason. Why would you allow yourself to lose sight of God just because someone/something was intimidated by the work that God has called you to do? Keep pushing forward.

  30. 23 When this letter from King Artaxerxes was read to Rehum, Shimshai, and their colleagues, they hurried to Jerusalem. Then, with a show of strength, they forced the Jews to stop building.

Today in our generation, there are so many who would love to stop the church from growing, meeting or rebuilding. The will go to great lengths to stop a church from expanding. We as the church must unite and be on the offensive to any challenges that come our way.

  31. 1-4 Old enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building The Temple of the God of Israel. They came to Zerubbabel and the family heads and said, “We’ll help you build. We worship your God the same as you. We’ve been offering sacrifices to him since Esarhaddon king of Assyria brought us here. Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the family heads of Israel said to them, “Nothing doing. Building The Temple of our God is not the same thing to you as to us. We alone will build for the God of Israel. We’re the ones King Cyrus of Persia commanded to do it.”

While the house of God, the temple of the Lord, the church may mean different things to different people it should be open to all people. I can understand Zerubabel’s statement in that this house means something to us that you have no idea about. That is true. The new building on Westpoint Blvd means something to the “old-timers” of POFW that new comers just do not understand. There are precious few who have been a POFWian since the beginning and I can imagine what the building means to these people. I have only been here 10 of the 14 years and this building means so much to me, I cannot describe with mere words.

These strong feelings mean nothing if the spirit of the Lord is not in this place and directing the people. If we allow this new facility to become our idle God will do what He has to do to restore Himself. Let’s be thankful and good stewards of the things that God has given us but let’s be watchful that we do not allow this pile of dirt, steel and concrete to become an idle.
