Ezra 8

1 These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king.

2 Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush.

3 Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty.

4 Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males.

5 Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males.

6 Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males.

7 And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males.

8 And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males.

9 Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males.

10 And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males.

11 And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males.

12 And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males.

13 And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males.

14 Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.

15 And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.

16 Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.

17 And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God.

18 And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;

19 And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty;

20 Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.

21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.

23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

24 Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,

25 And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered:

26 I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents;

27 Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold.

28 And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the Lord; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the Lord God of your fathers.

29 Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the Lord.

30 So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.

31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.

32 And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.

33 Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;

34 By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time.

35 Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the Lord.

36 And they delivered the king’s commissions unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.

  1. Ezra 8:21-23 & 31-32 (NLT)
    21) And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled. 22) For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.” 23) So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayers.

    31) We broke camp at the Ahava Canal on April 19, and started off to Jerusalem. And the gracious hand of our God protected us and saved us from enemies and bandits along the way. 32) So we arrived safely in Jerusalem, where we rested for three days.

God is so Good!! When we humble ourselves before God and call on His name, He will hear us. He is our Protector, and He will keep us safe from the hands of our enemies.

JESUS today YOU will SAVE Me!

  2. SINCERE SEEKING

23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

GOD hears and honors SINCERE SEEKING. The times we live in tempt us to complain, revolt or march. However, the path to the heart of JESUS is still through Prayer and Fasting.

To experience Revival NOW to its greatest level, I am asking everyone that will to consecrate next Tuesday, November 29 a day of Prayer and Fasting for JESUS to accomplish HIS will through us during Revival NOW. That lives will be changed and hearts will be made whole and Revival will perpetuate throughout the North Texas region.

  3. 36 And they delivered the king’s commissions unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.

We pay taxes. Yes even though it is a requirement to not get into trouble with the law. We pay them. To our government. Now in this passage we see that the people would pay their king. So why do some Christians think it’s OK to not pay their tithes? First of all its God’s anyway. And second is he not the king of kings and Lord of lords? We must give to our king.

  4. And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled. For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. Ezra 8:21‭-‬23 NLT

It always best for us to pray before we do anything. Because god might want us to go another way
But it’s really important to pray before we travel because we want god hand to be on us you never know what can happen out there it’s great to know that. Our god is with us

  5. 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

Too many times we trudge through life and make our own decisions based on our own perceptions. Making decisions for your life, especially with children involved can always use the support and guidance of heavenly counsel. No matter where you’re going or what you are seeking the LORD says seek ye first the Kingdom of God and HIS righteousness (not what you think is right) and all these things shall be added unto you.

  6. Verses 21-23 AMP says and is captioned with:
    “Protection of God Invoked”
“Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava, so that we might humble ourselves before our God to seek from Him a safe journey for us, our [d]children, and all our possessions. For I was ashamed to request troops and horsemen from the king to protect us from the enemy along the way, because we had told the king, “The hand of our God is favorable toward all those who seek Him, but His power and His anger are against all those who abandon (turn away from) Him.” So we fasted and sought [help from] our God concerning this [matter], and He heard our plea.”

Invoke: 1)call on (a deity or spirit) in prayer, as a witness, or for inspiration; 2) call earnestly for

Jeremiah 29:12 AMP says “Then you will call on Me and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear [your voice] and I will listen to you.”

  7. 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

Despite what is going on in our lives, we must not forget to step back and not haste to make a decision and see what God wants to do about it. In Him we must seek in all that we do.

  8. 29Guard these treasures well until you present them to the leading priests, the Levites, and the leaders of Israel, who will weigh them at the storerooms of the LORD’s Temple in Jerusalem.”

With so much silver and gold I’m sure Ezra was somewhat afraid bandits would come and rob them. His faith in God gave him comfort that nothing would happen to all these treasures. God trusted in Ezra with all of this and to lead the completion of the temple.

  9. 22 For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen[f] to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.”
23 So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer. (NLT)

Hallelujah – always put your trust, first and foremost, in God alone.

  10. 21-22 I proclaimed a fast there beside the Ahava Canal, a fast to humble ourselves before our God and pray for wise guidance for our journey—all our people and possessions. I was embarrassed to ask the king for a cavalry bodyguard to protect us from bandits on the road. We had just told the king, “Our God lovingly looks after all those who seek him, but turns away in disgust from those who leave him.”

“I was embarrassed to ask for bodyguards…” Do I trust God or not?

1 Peter 4:12: “Do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.” Fiery trials are not strange. And the trials in view are hostilities from unbelievers, as the next verse shows: “But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings.” These trials are normal. Are we to be as lambs led to the slaughter or do we watch for the thief cometh when we least expect it.

As with many questions in our lives, self-defense has to do with wisdom, understanding, and tact. For instance, in Luke 22, Jesus does tell His disciples to get a sword. Jesus knew that he would be threatened and His followers would be threatened as well. Jesus was giving approval of the fact that one has the right to self-defense. Now, just a few verses later, we see Jesus being arrested, and Peter takes a sword and cuts off someone’s ear. Jesus rebukes Peter for that act. Why? Peter was trying to stop something that Jesus had been telling His disciples was in fact going to happen. In other words, Peter was acting unwisely in the situation. He was trying to stop something that was not supposed to be stopped. We must be wise as to when to fight and when not to.

  11. iLove to Grow in the Word
15I assembled the exiles at the Ahava Canal, and we camped there for three days while I went over the lists of the people and the priests who had arrived. I found that not one Levite had volunteered to come along.

Where are the ministers? Wow, not one to volunteer to go with Ezra on this great journey and expedition for the Lord. It’s ashame that Ezra had to call upon folks down the road to help when there were ministers in the city of Exile that he was in.

  12. 23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

There are a few things more effective in the spirit than the power of prayer and fasting. Jesus himself said “some things dont come out except by prayer and fasting”

Im thankful that God is moved by our prayers and fasting!

  13. 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

There is a way that seemeth right unto man…but the end thereof are the ways of death. Prov 14:12 It is wise of us to inquire of God for his way, the right way, in all we do.

  14. 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

Wee cannot rely on our flesh to make our everyday decisions we need to seek the Lord to help us make the right decisions.

  15. 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.

23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

When we seek God, when we pray and fast to bring ourselves closer to Jesus, not only will the hand of God be over us, but we are also preventing the wrath of God from coming against us. Because as it says in verse 22, all those that forsake him, God’s power and wrath is against them. So not only do we get blessed, but we prevent ourselves from being cursed as well.

  16. 15 And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.

    No preacher

It’s a dangerous place when we have preacher in our lives. The Word spoke to me and let me know, that if some one truly seeks for the will of God and to get right with Him, he will be lead to a man of the house of Levi (apostolic Pentecostal God fearing man).
God is putting in man to seek a true preacher, men fit for the calling, that can bring back man kind into a intimate relationship with God. A pre-fallen Adam state.

  17. Ezra 8 Message Version

22 I was embarrassed to ask the king for a cavalry bodyguard to protect us from bandits on the road. We had just told the king, “Our God lovingly looks after all those who seek him, but turns away in disgust from those who leave him.” 23 So we fasted and prayed about these concerns. And he listened.

There are times when declaring a fast is the only answer. When seeking the complete direction will of God. Our God does look after us….He listens and hears even the unspoken words we may not even be able to speak to Him. He cares so much for us like no other. I’m glad thou the prophet was embarrassed in the natural he knew exactly to go right to God , he knew God would not fail him.

  18. .

  19. “And as the good hand of our God was upon us, they brought us a man of understanding (insight) from the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, named Sherebiah, with his sons and his brothers (relatives), 18 men;”
    ‭‭EZRA‬ ‭8:18‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Thankful the Hand of God in our lives. Sometimes it seems unseen but He is always there.

  20. Ezra 8:22 (NLT)
22 For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.”

We can talk about faith in God all day but until we are placed in a situation where we must use that faith it is futile. This is an example of the scripture Faith without works is dead. Faith will work but only if we are in a situation where it can work.

  21. AMP – 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava, so that we might humble ourselves before our God to seek from Him a safe journey for us, our [d]children, and all our possessions. 22 For I was ashamed to request troops and horsemen from the king to protect us from the enemy along the way, because we had told the king, “The hand of our God is favorable toward all those who seek Him, but His power and His anger are against all those who abandon (turn away from) Him.” 23 So we fasted and sought [help from] our God concerning this [matter], and He heard our plea.

It pays to seek the Lord regarding every situation, and some things require us to fast to give rid of our will and ways.

  22. “Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.” The word of God (Jesus) records that God delivered them. One is wise in giving all glory and honor unto God; whereas one is unwise in allowing it to go elsewhere. Dear God, let us always be mindful to give you alone the praise. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  23. “For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.” The Lord made a way for them then, and still can do the same today; however we must do our part. Likewise we must be willing to do his will before our own. God help us in seeking and doing your will, in Jesus name.

  24. 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

I’m thankful that my actions are not ignored nor invisible to God.

  25. 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.

There is no in between. Your either with God or against Him.

  26. 21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

AMEN!!! Enough said, in order to see results we must sacrifice and submit our flesh. If you want God to guide you its simple just fast. There are so many things to fast for, so many people relying on us to do what were suppose to be doing. Jesus Help Us!!!

  27. 21 There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.” 23 So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

Trust in God! When you put faith in God and call on his name he will be there to answer! Thank you God for always being our provider and protector!

  28. One persons humility is another persons victory.

“For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was entreated of us.”
    ‭‭Ezra‬ ‭8:22-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬
