Ezra 10

1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.

3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

4 Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

5 Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.

6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.

7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.

10 And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.

11 Now therefore make confession unto the Lord God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.

12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.

13 But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.

14 Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.

15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.

18 And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

19 And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.

20 And of the sons of Immer; Hanani, and Zebadiah.

21 And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

23 Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

25 Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, and Jeziah, and Malchiah, and Miamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliah.

27 And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

28 Of the sons also of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.

29 And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.

30 And of the sons of Pahathmoab; Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

31 And of the sons of Harim; Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

32 Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah.

33 Of the sons of Hashum; Mattenai, Mattathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei.

34 Of the sons of Bani; Maadai, Amram, and Uel,

35 Benaiah, Bedeiah, Chelluh,

36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,

37 Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasau,

38 And Bani, and Binnui, Shimei,

39 And Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah,

40 Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai,

41 Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah,

42 Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph.

43 Of the sons of Nebo; Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, and Joel, Benaiah.

44 All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.

  1. FOLLOW THE LEADER TO REVIVAL

1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

The path to true and sincere REVIVAL is charted by our humility, recognition of sin and thourough repentance from sin. Ezra took the steps to lead the people back to GOD.

REVIVAL cannot be obtained without a whole hearted turning to GOD for and in all things. We establish our plans and make our agendas and find ourselves in total control of our lives with JESUS being an afterthought of our decisions. I declare a Spiritual awakening in the church of JESUS.

Ezra drew a line in the sand and declared a solemn assembly for all people.

    7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;
8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

No doubt people were pressed to make a decision, somebody probably had a vacation planned, others were planning family outings, weddings, moving, parties and many other activities that consume our time. But to keep pace with the church and the man of GOD, their plans faded into the dark to follow the light.

The problem was found in the disobedient, rebellious priests, the leaders were the ones with sin in their lives, by taking strange wives.

GOD is no respecter of persons.

sin is no respecter of position.

We must guard our hearts, through prayer, fasting, submission, serving and worshipping with our whole heart. Seeking GOD FIRST.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  2. 4. Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. Be of good courage, and do it. NKJV

Every leader could use some encouragement and a declaration of support from time to time.

    Great Leaders lead by example.
Not only did Ezra lead by example he led with humility.
He received council from someone in a position lower than him. He did not have to listen to Shechaniah. There was a word of encouragement an assurance that the people were wanting to that which was right.
The people followed Ezra because of these attributes he portrayed.
He had a heart to lead the people back to where they needed to be.
In service to God we must be bold yet live with a humble heart before him.
We cannot let pride keep us from where God wants us to be no matter what position we hold in life.

  4. 3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

We need to put away the things that we let get attached to us that turn us away from God. Because that is what happens when you get married, the two become one, you become attached to each other. We let ourselves get attached to many things in life but some of those things hinder our walk with God. Those things we need to let go so we can get closer to God.

  5. and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

We can’t expect everyone to do right put we can pray for them

  6. iLove to Grow in the Word
1While Ezra prayed and made this confession, weeping and lying face down on the ground in front of the Temple of God, a very large crowd of people from Israel—men, women, and children—gathered and wept bitterly with him.

True repentance is falling down at the altar and crying out to God. When all the tears are gone, true repentance causes action. Action that removes oneself from every pagan situation that caused the backsliding in the first place. God will not reject that kind of repentance, but will embrace it.

  7. 3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

4 Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

Following God’s commandments won’t always be easy. There will be moments where it’ll require sacrifice. I am reminded of John 14:23 NIV, “Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”

  8. 3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

4 Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

  9. 1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

We must go back to our first love of God

  10. 11 Now therefore make confession unto the Lord God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.
I must sanctify myself from my strange idols, the things of this world that I have allowed into my life, pulling me from God.

  11. Ezra 10:5 (NLT)
5 So Ezra stood up and demanded that the leaders of the priests and the Levites and all the people of Israel swear that they would do as Shecaniah had said. And they all swore a solemn oath.

When they flirted with the world it eventually led to marriage. Marriage then became families. Families into clans and so on. Now because of decisions to compromise there is a entire culture of rebellion. Relationships, children, cousins all contaminated with worldliness.

One decision to continue in unrepented sin affects the entire community eventually. This is why the word tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves. When we truly love each other we consider the devastation our actions could cause in the lives of those we love.

  12. 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.

  13. 1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.
Thank God for a people who are humble and willing to repent of their sins. But it all started because a leader was willing to bow down himself in humility and lead by example. The people will always follow a leader do as leaders we should strive to be good examples.

  14. Ezra 10:10-12
    10) And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.
    11) Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and seperate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
    12) And all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.

When Pastor Preaches the Word of God, if ALL the congregation (not just a few, but ALL) would respond with a Loud Voice, “AS THOU HAST SAID, SO MUST WE DO,” what a REVIVAL we could have.

    It’s Time for REVIVAL NOW!!

  15. Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

People are always watching weather you realize it or not. Don’t just be a leader strive to be a great leader.

  16. 11 Now therefore make confession unto the Lord God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.

Repentace puts you on the path to revival. We must first recognize our need to repent and make things right with the Lord. Revival starts in our hearts. Turn from sinful ways and back to seeking God.

  17. Ezra 10:8 Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.

    True Repentance

Repentance is not only being and feeling sorry for the sin you have committed against God. It involves a heart change, a attitude adjustment, and a change of habits. The people of God had to not just repent, but make a game plan on how to restore the relationship with God. It would involve getting to the root of there problem and also to not waver in following Gods commands.

They didn’t half way meet the commands of God but did everything to restore there relationship with Him. To restore we need to produce fruit of repentance, and that’s what they did.

  18. “Now therefore make confession unto the Lord God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.” The word of God (Jesus) is clear on where one is to confess. They were likewise instructed to please Jesus. One can and should endeavor to get along with everyone; however one should never put the creation (mankind), before the Creator (Jesus). Dear God, remove self-righteousness and bless us with humbleness. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  19. “But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.” They needed time, which can often be hard for some too understand. Nevertheless what truly matters is that we attempt to please the Lord, and in doing his will. God let not our ways hinder another, in Jesus name.

  20. The first step to repentance is to realize there is something wrong. Ezra had a humble enough heart to hear that from someone in a lower position than himself. The next step is to do something about it. It is a very powerful gestur when a leader repents. Those that followed him not only followed him in repentance but they gained a new respect for their leader. Leaders don’t have to be perfect but they do have to be real.

  21. In reading this chapter, it made me think of repentance. The first step is acknowledging that you have sinned and now truly want to repent. If you know you’ve done something that was not in accordance with God’s will, you must ask for repentance and turn from those ways. The second step is forgiving yourself. Many ask for forgiveness; but, do not forgive themselves and hold onto what they’ve done. True repentance is exactly that….turning away and never doing it again. The Lord is simply waiting to see if you trust Him enough to help you through.

  22. 1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

  23. 1 While Ezra prayed and made this confession, weeping and lying face down on the ground in front of the Temple of God, a very large crowd of people from Israel—men, women, and children—gathered and wept bitterly with him. (NLT)

Repentance isn’t just asking forgiveness, but actually turning away and leaving behind the sin that you once partook of. Repentance is a complete 180 – you drop the sin, turn around, start walking back to God and never look back.

  24. 8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

There is always a choice as to whether to serve God or continue to in our unrighteous behavior. For some, the time is short for others there is a grace period. Some may need to battle within themselves to really determine their true desires and whether they are going to repent and turn from wickedness and live for God like never before or…

    Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Genesis 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?

Can we live a life without sin? Is it possible to be sinless?

  25. 1 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.

Prayer changes things. When we are open before the Lord, He will guide us in the steps necessary to accomplish the task at hand. Ezra had bowed before the Lord and openly interceded for the people, and God gave him direction what to do.

The Lord is faithful. If we will seek Him, He will provide the answer.

  26. Ezra leads a repentance of Israel back to their first love. They lost sight of who he was with the backsliding of a unequally yoked wife. If a marriage isn’t build upon a godly paved foundation it with crumble. The wives the bound themselves to were of the world and a great temptation to worship false gods. A woman of virtue will always lead to God not away from him.

  27. 7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;
8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

These men all faced a bitter consequence of their disobedience and sin, but unless they humbled themselves and obeyed the man of God and God’s proclamation for their repentance, they would lose everything. We can gain the whole world and lose out on heaven, so we too must obey our God and keep our place in heaven through repentance and turning around our ways to match his ways.

  28. 2Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, a descendant of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God, for we have married these pagan women of the land. But in spite of this there is hope for Israel.

The men were disobedient to God. They found humility in themselves and wanted to correct the wrong. If they would have obeyed from the beginning, no hardship would have to fall on wives and children. Before making a major decision, pray about it, and try to see the consequences of your decision.
