Nehemiah 2

1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.

2 Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

3 And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

4 Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it.

6 And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

7 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

8 And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

9 Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

10 When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

11 So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

12 And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.

13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.

14 Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.

15 Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.

16 And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.

17 Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

20 Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

  1. My God is a prayer answering God. What he did for Nehemiah back then, he can do for us now. God’s gracious hand will be with us as we do His will, just as He blessed Nehemiah with favor as he obediently and quietly went about His business. As we (POFW) move forward, many will come asking/mocking as the end of this chapter talks about; but, our response will be as Nehemiah’s in verse 20 AMP “I answered them, “The God of heaven [has appointed us for His purpose and] will give us success; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no portion, right, or memorial in Jerusalem.”

  2. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

Nehemiah knows the depth of despair in Jerusalem, for he calls upon God to do his works and God puts his hand over Nehemiah. With that said all works for the Kingdom are good in favor and we all need to strive to atleast do something for God.

  3. 4 Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

Have faith in God no matter the circumstance.

  4. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me.

Regardless of what people say when God calls us to do something, and despite whatever odds we may think that are stacked against us, none of what they say or do will prevail if we stand our ground and just obey. We just need to get to work and to build the temple.

  5. 5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it.

6 And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

Nehemiah was able to go and be sent to his city because he had favor. Because the King liked him so much, he granted the requests he had that he needed to help build the city. When you are a child of God and you have a servant’s heart as Nehemiah served the king, God will give you favor from the people in life that will help put you where God wants you to be.

  6. 19. But when Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem the Arab heard of our plan, they scoffed contemptuously. “What are you doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” they asked.

    20. I replied, “The God of heaven will help us succeed. We, his servants, will start rebuilding this wall. But you have no share, legal right, or historic claim in Jerusalem.” NLT

Don’t let the haters keep you from your mission – if God put you up to it, He will see you through it.

“I feel the haters spitting vapors on my dreams, but I still believe.”
    -Toby Mac

  7. 18 Then I told them about how the gracious hand of God had been on me, and about my conversation with the king. They replied at once, “Yes, let’s rebuild the wall!” So they began the good work. (NLT)

There is power in your testimony; share it and watch God work!

  8. “Then I answered the king, “Are you pleased with me, King Artaxerxes? If it pleases you, send me to Judah. Let me go to the city of Jerusalem. That’s where my people are buried. I want to rebuild it.” The queen was sitting beside the king. He turned and asked me, “How long will your journey take? When will you get back?” It pleased the king to send me. So I chose a certain time.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭2:5-6‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

He was a man of authority and under authority. He ASKED to go rebuild the city. And the king held him accountable by asking him how long the trip would be. And because he was under authority he was given the kings favor and protection to do the Lords will.

  9. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
When God speaks and the King lays his hands and favor upon you its time to build! God will strengthen our hands and help us to fulfill His work when we join together for His purpose. ..

19But when Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem the Arab heard of our plan, they scoffed contemptuously. “What are you doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” they asked.
20I replied, “The God of heaven will help us succeed. We, his servants, will start rebuilding this wall. But you have no share, legal right, or historic claim in Jerusalem.”

Ha, this statement was made thousands of years ago. The crazy thing about it is the Arabs are still trying to cause problems by dividing Israel by creating a new palestinian state…but the truth of the matter is…they have no right or historic claim in Jerusalem. Boom

  11. 3 And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

We should all be sad if the house of God does not look good. We should do what we can to keep it beautiful.

  12. In The Middle of The Night ( I go walking on the streets)

Pastors message about the night came to mind while reading these scriptures.
It was in the night that Nemiah viewed Jeruselum in its distress. Night time while everyone else was sleeping the prophet was making a plan. God had already told him. Sometimes we must keep what God has told us to ourself. We must search in the night arise from our resting place and seek Gods will. Its in the stillness when everyone else is sleeping God will speak to us. There are treasures to be found even in the darkest hour. My husband would always say we will know in the morning when a decision had to be made. I knew somewhere in the night he would be ,seeking direction and it never failed when daylight came he had the answer. Thank God for great leaders who know how to be strengthened and guide us.
Thank you pastor for the message about the night……

  13. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me.

God will make provision for his people, no matter how big the problem seem God will raise up a standard!

  14. DISQUALIFIED BY UNBELIEF

FAITH in GOD through JESUS Christ is the ultimate goal of the believer. As believers we commanded to live by FAITH, walk by FAITH, act by FAITH and are saved by Grace through FAITH.

FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Our lives are filled with opportunity to see a need, believe for the extraordinary and witness the miraculous.

Spiritual Leaders are led on journeys by GOD and challenged through the WORD and SPIRIT of JESUS to accomplish or initiate a Kingdom task that cannot be accomplished alone. We witness this here in Nehemiah 2. The prophet mulled over the dismay of the city and answered the call to do something about it, when he shared his VISION for Revival NOW, most said “Let us rise up and BUILD”. However there were 3 despisers. They were influenced and fed by one another. GOD held their fate. They were DISQUALIFIED BY UNBELIEF, but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

At The POFW Revival NOW is a VISION GOD placed in my heart 13 years ago, we will see miracles, signs and wonders by the hand of our GOD. However those that laugh and despise this opportunity to make history in the Revival NOW of this Region will receive the same fate as Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem.

We still have time to get involved with the work of Rebuilding the wall, Restoring the FAITH, Revival NOW 2016.

  15. “And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭2:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.”

You will find favor in the will of God!!

  16. so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.”

Our face reveals whats in our hearts. We tend to worry about so many things as humans and don’t let God do the work. He will take care of those that love him. He will never leave us, we are his children. Don’t let your heart be saddened, we should rejoice because we know Him. We know who the creator is, who is the King of King, Lord of Lords, Almighty God is…..His name is Jesus for that I am grateful. I could’ve been in the world lost but he chose me!!!! He chose me to grow his kingdom!!!!Thank you Jesus!!!!

  17. …this is nothing else but sorrow of heart…

Hope is a powerful emotion. It creates anticipation and thus guides what we think about, how we plan, and what we actually do. Hope lines up a variety of positive emotions in our heart – eagerness, joy, delight, satisfaction, and so forth. The closer we come to realizing our hope, the more intense the emotions become. Hope affects not only how we think and feel, but how we act as well. We tend to bring our present behavior into line with our hope.

Now, let someone pull that rug out from under us, or circumstances conspire to destroy our dreams, and we can certainly experience a kind of grief that is understandable and not to be denied. Shattered hope can bring sorrow of the heart. I know this is a little out of context, with our chapter today but there are people hurting around us. I would predict each of us has had hopes and dreams crushed and felt sorrow of the heart. Let’s not forget how we felt – like tomorrow would never come.

Ecc 7:3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

We are not always going to be walking around with a smile or a goofy look on our face, it is not a time to play, it is a time to get serious with God. We must understand to everything there is a season, a time to laugh and a time to cry.

    • I do believe in the power of the lord Jesus Christ he is a powerful and forgiving God, When you repent and have faith in the lord things will come and you will receive the blessing but when you mock and laugh at what the lord is giving you and showing you he will not let you receive you blessings, keep your faith and have faith that our lord Jesus Christ is here. Don’t let people bring you down show them that Jesus is our savoir, and our success means something to us because we have faith in him. I know Jesus Christ my Savior is with me as I Fast today and he is with everyone else I also do believe and have faith that if I don’t repent and walk away that I’m basically saying I don’t have to much faith in him . Today is my day that I can prove to myself that I am a Child of God and Jesus Christ .

      20. I replied, “The God of heaven will help us succeed. We, his servants, will start rebuilding this wall. But you have no share, legal right, or historic claim in Jerusalem.” NLT

  18. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

  19. 18 I told them how God was supporting me and how the king was backing me up. They said, “We’re with you. Let’s get started.” They rolled up their sleeves, ready for the good work. 19 When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they laughed at us, mocking, “Ha! What do you think you’re doing? Do you think you can cross the king?” 20 I shot back, “The God-of-Heaven will make sure we succeed. We’re his servants and we’re going to work, rebuilding. You can keep your nose out of it. You get no say in this – Jerusalem’s none of your business!”MSG

  20. 5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it.

6 And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

    7 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

8 And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

Doing things the right way. There is a divine order in the Kingdom of God and we must be submitted to that order, so that we are blessed and in the flow of anointed. Stepping out to do things our own way, or a different way could cause us to miss the blessing and the anointed to be drawn back from our lives.

21. Nehemiah 2:13 By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal Well and the Dung Gate examining the walls of Jerusalem which had been broken down and its gates which had been destroyed by fire. Then I moved on word toward the fountain gate and the King’s pool but there was not enough room for my mount to get through so I went up the valley by night examining the wall. Finally I turned back and reentered through the Valley Gate. The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priest or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work. Then I said to them you see the trouble we are in Jerusalem lies in ruins and its gates have been burned with fire. Come let us rebuild all the wall of Jerusalem and we will no longer be in disgrace. I also told him about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied let us start rebuilding so they begun this good work.

  22. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

  23. As we go into the season of Revival. We are rebuilding what’s been destroyed . alot of us Including me has some. broke piece that’s been Destroyed. You keep try to put you piece back together but they keep falling apart
All you really need is Jesus.
Nehemiah new his destiny he knew only Jesus can take something that completely desolate and rebuild it. What might god we severe

  24. “And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭2:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

When your faithful to God and his will. He will lead you and take you places that you never thought of. God can and will lead you, to protect you and guide you. Only if you allow him

  25. 2:19
Ridicule is one of the most effective means there to discourage us from acting. The superior smirk the raised eyebrow the mocking laugh have kept many young Christian from living out there faith

  26. 18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me.

The people were encouraged knowing that God had sent Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem but the enemy laughed. Then Nehemiah prophesied that they would be part nor have portion in Jerusalem. Who’s report will you believe? I will believe the report of the Lord! Revival Now!

  27. Nehemiah 2:6, 8, & 19-20 (MSG)
    6) … I gave him a time, and the king gave his approval to send me.
    8) … The generous hand of my God was with me in this and the king gave them (the letters) to me.
    19) When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they laughed at us, mocking, “Ha! What do you think you’re doing? Do you think you can cross the king?”
    20) I shot back, “The God-of-Heaven will make sure we succeed. We’re his servants and we’re going to work, rebuilding. You can keep your nose out of it. You get no say in this – Jerusalem’s none of your business.

Keep Your Nose Out Of It – It’s None Of Your Business.
It’s obvious to me that Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem didn’t know or have all the facts as to why Nehemiah was there. Or they wouldn’t have asked them what they were doing or if they thought they could cross the king.
When you don’t know or have all the facts about a situation, it’s best to keep you’re nose out of it because it’s none of your business.

  28. It’s time to build the praise back

5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it.

    What happened to the praise.
    What happened to the love.
What happened to our love for God.
What happened to the times where praise and worship would turn into the word and be spoken to just praise again.
It is time to build praise again. To push beyond the limits that we have placed and go further and deeper into God.
Let the new revolution start with me, by proclaiming that He is God. He is my Judah. He is my all. He is my everything.
The revolution of praise to God. Let it start right here, right now.

  29. And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it.(Nehemiah 2:5 KJV)

Nehemiah prayed under his breath to the one and only savior of the world Nehemiah suggested that the king of babylon would think very highly of him and that the king of babylon would send Nehemiah to the city of Judah were Nehemiah’s family died so that he could rebuild it again.

  30. Nehemiah, a man of action, is also a man of prayer. The situation the Jewish people are in at Jerusalem breaks his heart and fuels him to pray. His own comfortable position as trusted attendant to the king, in contrast to the sorry state of the people of Jerusalem must intensify his sorrow. His sitting in a palace full of lavish riches and his people waste away in desolation. So Nehemiah praised God and asks for guidance in facing his boss with a request to go to Jerusalem. When God gives him the opportunity to act, Nehemiah is afraid (vs2). He shoots up a silent ” “arrow” prayer for courage and plunges forward. Prayer involves risk. We ask but don’t know how God will respond. We believe God will supply boldness and power, but we cannot guess his timing. So, like, Nehemiah, we pray and trust that God is bigger than the risk taken. In order to remember Nehemiah and where he got his courage from, draw an arrow from the phrase “, much afraid” to the words “Then I prayed.” and it will guide us in the right direction.

  31. Nehemiah 2:2-3 (NLT)
2 So the king asked me, “Why are you looking so sad? You don’t look sick to me. You must be deeply troubled.”
Then I was terrified, 3 but I replied, “Long live the king! How can I not be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”

It matters how you come before the king. Nehemiah was terrified because of his countenance. He knew he could lose his life for looking sad in front of a pagan king.

How much more should we check our attitude when coming before the God of glory.

We are not without hope, and lost. We are saved, redeemed, set free, and on our way to heaven. I believe it makes God feel a little upset when our attitude doesn’t resemble who we are.

  32. “Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.” The word of God (Jesus) records that he (God) was in it. All things are possible if God is in it; however history unfortunately proves there are times things are also allowed, even if it was said he (God) was in it. Nevertheless there is hope for the Judge (God) knows all, and will reward accordingly one day. Dear God, help us in keeping our heart right with you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  33. “And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.” The king showed concern and compassion, which he also agreed to help. The Lord has also showed concern and compassion for all, which he continues to help even today, if we will but seek him. God help us in seeking your will, in Jesus name.

  34. 7 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

There is power and protection when your sent. Here is asked “if it please the King…” so often people do things with out the blessings of God and the man of God. We must be very careful not to do this. For it weakens our defenses. The horsemen are not with us and intimidation will set in when the “haters” arrive.

  35. 3 And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

4 Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it.
