Nehemiah 4

1 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

13 Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.

23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.

  1. Nehemiah 4-4-5 (NLT)
    4) Then I prayed, “Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land!
    5) Do not ignore their guilt. Do not blot out their sins, for they have provoked you to anger here in front of the builders.

Nehemiah’s response to the opposition and discouraging words of Sanballat and Tobiah was PRAYER.
When times of opposition and discouragement come, our first response should be to PRAY.
God wants us to Trust In and Rely On HIM, and the only way we can do that is PRAY.

  2. Verse 6 MSG says “We kept at it, repairing and rebuilding the wall. The whole wall was soon joined together and halfway to its intended height because the people had a heart for the work.” When the enemy comes trying to discourage, trying to threaten your purpose or distracting you; just keep at it and launch your prayer from wherever you are!

The end of the chapter speaks about working together, protecting one another in prayer and knowing that “our God will fight for us” as the end of verse 20 MSG says.

  3. I read this chapter in the message version this morning. I could not pick one particular verse that spoke to me. The whole chapter did. I remember when we were building the new church and everyone was being attacked, whether it be at church, finances, at work, in their personal and family life, wherever. We were called to hold a hammer in one hand and a sword in the other. I remember the level of opposition the enemy was trying to front. I remember how even though we were tired we kept pressing on and we didn’t give up. And God blessed us. This whole chapter is so inspiring. Thank you, Jesus.

  4. There are several spiritual strategies to be taken from this chapter. A couple would be to pray and guard. Another would be to always be ready to fight. Realize, your success depends on the value you place on the Kingdom of God, the Word of God, etc. and your determination to keep it.

9 But we prayed to our God and guarded the city day and night to protect ourselves. (NLT)

23 During this time, none of us—not I, nor my relatives, nor my servants, nor the guards who were with me—ever took off our clothes. We carried our weapons with us at all times, even when we went for water. (NLT)

  5. 9. Our response to this threat was twofold: we prayed to our True God, and we set up a watch-day and night-to look out for them. The Voice

Praying and watching is how we need to live every day, because the threat against us and everything important to us is real every day.

  6. 14 After looking things over I stood up and spoke to the nobles, officials, and everyone else: “Don’t be afraid of them. Put your minds on the Master, great and awesome, and then fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.” MSG
Don’t worry about what your enemies are saying, God has our back. I have lost brothers/sister/daughter/family members that people tell me why do you keep praying for them, they are not going to come around but as long as they have breath in them and I’m alive I’m going to pray for them. Let’s pray for one another instead of knocking down one another, lift up someone today. You never know who needs just a smile or a simple “good morning” or “how is your day”……..

  7. 17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.
Every laborer should be vigilant equipped with the tools to build and the weapons to defend what’s been built. These men were determined to give themselves to working for God and defending His kingdom. The same desire should be in the heart of every leader.

  8. WORK AND PRAY

20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.
21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

We are well aware of spiritual attacks from the adversary that desires failure and famine on the part of the church. However we are BLESSED by GOD with HIS hand of protection.

The laborers were focused on the WORK and trusted GOD to fight for them. Too often believers get so caught up in the fight they forget the WORK. Watching is a type of PRAYER in the WORD of GOD and we witness there to be an around the clock watch over the WORK.

JESUS help us to remain PRAYERFUL as we BUILD the walls of peace and protection for your Kingdom. Lord JESUS as we UNIFY for the WORK of your Kingdom help us remember to watch for one another and always TRUST you in the FIGHT.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word
19Then I explained to the nobles and officials and all the people, “The work is very spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. 20When you hear the blast of the trumpet, rush to wherever it is sounding. Then our God will fight for us!”

Wow, this chapter is amazing. The work must go on no matter what the attack is. We must have revival no matter what the cost, we must have unity in leadership no matter what the cost. When the pastor sounds the alarm, we must be willing to drop what we are doing and run into battle. We must trust the man of God if we are going to build this city for the glory of God. All the mockers and talebearers and troublemakers will have their own mischief poured back upon their own heads.

  10. 21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

When we work together. The big load becomes small for each to carry. So let’s help one another. And be blessed.

  11. 6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

The people had a mind to work. The PEOPLE had a MIND to WORK. We must be of the save mind and same heart for the same purpose regardless of the things that are going on in our life or whats coming against us. The reason we are attacked is to distract us from working for the Lord, bc if our mind is made up then he can do nothing to stop us.

  12. 6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

When the people are of one mind, great things can happen.

Acts 2:1 – 4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  13. “Then I spoke to the nobles and officials and everyone else: “There’s a lot of work going on and we are spread out all along the wall, separated from each other. When you hear the trumpet call, join us there; our God will fight for us.””
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭4:19-20‬ ‭MSG‬‬

No matter our title, post, duty or calling when the alarm is sounding we all should respond. There is power in unity. Together we can withstand any attack but dis-unified and doing our own thing we are vulnerable. Not only vulnerable as a group but as individuals. Let’s forgive, forget and put away the petty differences we may have with our brothers and sisters and come together as a united front and claim the victory that God has prepared for us.

  14. 17 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, 18 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me.

Wow what a great chapter….great illustration of faith. No matter what the enemy might want to throw at us we must continue to work. We all go through problems and trials but this is when we have to push harder. We must keep working with His Word on our side, we can’t work for His kingdom without the Lord. We must let Him fight for us for we already have the victory. We must not let the things of this world affect our worship, praise, walk with God, our ministry. We can’t let the enemy steal what the Lord has given us. We have to keep working and having the full armor of God with us. NO EXCUSES!!!! We serve a big and mighty God!!!!

  15. 12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

This makes me think of the song we sing that “no matter what the weapon is I want you to know that I win…”
If the enemy can separate us, we could be easier to overwhelm but when we join together in unity (in the Lord) as has been pointed out, we overcome!

  16. They might mock us they might laugh at us but we must continue to do our Work no matter what the world think or Say pray for them

  17. 17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

Unity, Submission, Dedication, and Dertermination! No matter what opposition they had faced, they knew if they stick together and trust in God he will make a way!

  18. we made our prayer unto our God
we must pray unto god everyday and prayer helps with everything all we have to do is tell and asked god

  19. Then I prayed, “Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land!
    Nehemiah 4:4 NLT

Give it to the Lord.. We see here a great example on how to react when others “talk about you” or mock you. Tell it to Jesus. Dont try and fall into that trap. Let the enemy speak all it wants and save your word for prayer and let God know. We are his children and the apple of his eye. Dont contend with your bretheren or enemy, instead tell the one who can do something about you. The word tell us to cast our cares on him for He cares for us.

  20. 7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

This just reiterates that the enemy is going to attack and is planning and plotting against Gods people, but if we stay strong we will be brought out for Jesus never fails.

  21. 4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

The cry of veganence from someone who has been hurt by those around him. God is the God of veganence. If we can keep our focus God will take care of the rest. Keep our eyes on the goal, no turning from side to side, or turning back.

  22. 16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

If everyone there would have only stood guard the wall wouldn’t have been built.
Everyone has their own part to do in the kingdom of God, and it takes everyone doing their own part to reach this city!

  23. 14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

    IT IS TIME FOR WAR

devil you will not have my family, my friends nor my enemies! I will not be afraid I will take courage and battle for my spiritual children as well as my natural children and for the lost all all around .
For my God is forever faithful and in Him is my strength.

  24. 1 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

There is always that one person that can’t rejoice at your blessings. They can not be happy about you getting cleanse. The first thing they do is that it is try to put you down, call you names, and mock you. The one thing that we need to always remember is that together we can built anything, all we have to do is have the the wants to!!! (So happy to have Internet) . They can do all that to us but they do t know what are God can do!!!

  25. 14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

  26. “And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.” The word of God (Jesus) records they all were willing and prepared to fight. One that is willing to defend God, family, and country is noble and trustworthy; whereas one that will not cannot ever be trusted. Dear God, remove those that are unwilling to stand. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  27. “Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.” They were wise in that they prayed, as they were aware the Lord could do far more than they could. We would be as wise to follow their example, for we are truly small, and he is truly great. God help us to see that we should seek more of you, in Jesus name.

  28. 6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

In my life I’ve meet some good people. Some successful, some on their way to success, and others sit idle waiting on success to fall in their laps.

One thing I can say about those headed to success and those that are successful; they had a mind to work. Success is about attitude, a determined person will achieve more than those who lack passion.

  29. Nehemiah 4:2 (NLT)
2 saying in front of his friends and the Samarian army officers, “What does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think they’re doing? Do they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices? Do they actually think they can make something of stones from a rubbish heap—and charred ones at that?”

    Nehemiah 4:19 (NLT)
19 Then I explained to the nobles and officials and all the people, “The work is very spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall.

The enemy mocked them for sacrificing but Nehemiah understood a principle. He understood that he was limited. He could not do this on his home. He needed help. More importantly he needed the God of his ancestors to empower them to do the work of rebuilding the wall.

It is never a wast to offer praise, and sacrifice to God before a task. It isn’t for special privileges and favor but rather as a way to surrender to him and allow him to work through us.

  30. “And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭4:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Half the people were working on building. The other half were protecting them. We can learn much from this verse. Half and half = a whole. Everyone worked. While half of them were building the others were protecting them. It is always important to be covered.

  31. 14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

If God is with us who can overcome us? We will always have the victory.

  32. 23 During this time, none of us—not I, nor my relatives, nor my servants, nor the guards who were with me—ever took off our clothes. We carried our weapons with us at all times, even when we went for water.

They carried their weapons at all times, in this case their spear, sword or bow & arrow. They were ready for battle at a moments notice. We too should carry our weapons, the bible, and be ready for spiritual battle any time the enemy comes our way.

  33. Nehemiah 4:17-18 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me.

Working always ready to fight. The Marine Corps distinguish itself from the other services in many ways but this one is what related to this chapter. When everyone enlist even reservist, they go through boot camp. All regardless of the enlistment type, go through boot camp. After boot camp most go to a MOS school, (Military Occupation School) were they train in the specialty. Marine, on the other hand, go to infantry school after boot camp. Regardless if you signed up to be a cook, mechanic, or in administration, you were an infantry man first before you were anything else. This enabled you to be deployed to guard, shoot, attack, patrol, defend, all the basics of being in infantry.

We could be filing paper work, carring a side arm, and be proficient at both. The builders had to not just build and be skillful at there trade, but be warriors able to defend in the event of an attack.

What a concept when applied to Christianity. We are not just called to labor but fight. In the sense that, much of labor is spiritual warfare. We are called not just to be effective workers, but spiritual warriors too.
