Nehemiah 8

1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.

2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.

8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.

12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.

14 And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:

15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.

17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness.

18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.

  1. Verses 9-12 NKJV says ” And Nehemiah, who was the governor,[a] Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law. Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.” And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them.” These verses reminded me of the song “This is the Day”:

This is the day, this is the day.
That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice, we will rejoice,
And be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day
    That the Lord has made.

  2. 3. He faced the square just inside the Water Gate from early morning until noon and read aloud to everyone who could understand. All the people listened closely to the Book of the Law.
    8. They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage. NLT

    Acts 8:
    30. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
    31. And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

  3. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Our God isn’t anything to be sorrowful of but he is the one who gives us strength. Everything we do is his strength that lives inside of us, and nothing is possible without his will. Our God is never failing and provides.

  4. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

  5. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

  6. “All of those Levites read parts of the Scroll of the Law of God to the people. They made it clear to them. They told them what it meant. So the people were able to understand what was being read. Then Nehemiah and Ezra spoke up. So did the Levites who were teaching the people. All of those men said to the people, “This day is set apart to honor the Lord your God. So don’t sob. Don’t be sad.” All of the people had been sobbing as they listened to the words of the Law. Nehemiah was governor. Ezra was a priest and a teacher of the law. Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy some good food and sweet drinks. Send some of it to those who don’t have any. This day is set apart to honor our Lord. So don’t be sad. The joy of the Lord makes you strong.” The Levites calmed all of the people down. They said, “Be quiet. This is a sacred day. So don’t be sad.” Then all of the people went away to eat and drink. They shared their food with others. They celebrated with great joy. Now they understood the words they had heard. That’s because everything had been explained to them.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭8:8-12‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

There are things that we may not understand but one thing we can be sure of and that is we understand that God is in control. Let’s go fellowship and break bread together and celebrate the Lord. It is the joy of the Lord is our strength.

  7. 9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep.

Come let us rejoice. For the king has come. Do let us rejoice. Rejoice and be glad in it.

  8. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

It’s important as we serve God that we have a spirit and attitude it’s important that we stay joyful in spite of whatever is going on. The right attitude and spirit will give you the strength to fulfill your responsibility and your purpose in God

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word
17So everyone who had returned from captivity lived in these shelters during the festival, and they were all filled with great joy! The Israelites had not celebrated like this since the days of Joshua son of Nun.

These folks had great revival by simply listening to the Word of God and obeying the Word of God. Revival is not difficult, but it is easy…Listen and Obey…yep, it’s that easy to enter into the joy of the Lord…That’s why blogging is so important; how would we know how easy it is if we dont read how easy it is? Boom!

  10. the book of the law of God
we need to follow the law of god for he has something instore for everyone of us. We need to let god in are life everyday so he can lead us.

  11. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.

The JOY of the Lord is our strength, one of the enemies attacks against us is to constantly take our joy away using shame and condemnation because that is where our strength in the Lord lies. IF he can get us focused on other things and not on what God is doing, then it can zap our energy away.

  12. Serving the lord will not always be easy there will be things that happened we will not understand. When we feel like we just cannot go on God is the one who give us strength.

  13. Nehemiah 8:5-6
    5) And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:
    6) And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

This is a good passage of scripture to show to people who don’t think its important to stand when the Word of God is read.
We should be so excited to hear the Word of God that it would cause us to stand, lift our hands, and worship the LORD.

  14. 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

People (saints and sinners) come weary and broken into the doors of church. They come to hear a word from the Lord. Yes, they often need to be challenged, stretched, exhorted, and rebuked. But if all they ever hear is that they don’t love Jesus enough, aren’t making disciples fast enough and with enough urgency, aren’t praying enough and are sinning too much—if this is all the people hear every single week—why would they ever come back?

Suffering people want answers. We are vulnerable to wolves who come in with clever words and enticing ways to tarnish our Pastor and his actions. Wolves masquerade as shepherds and helpers, and they will infiltrate the leadership at every level if allowed. Join me in praying for who lead. Pray that they would not lose the affections for God and remember their first love. Pray that our Pastor and leadership will be delivered from people who have the wrong motives. Pray for peace in their homes and minds. Pray that they will make correct decisions and stay in the will of God; and that they will always feel strong and refreshed in their spirit, soul, and bodies. Lord richly bless my pastor, his wife, and his family in Jesus name.

  15. 3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

Its important for us to make sure are new comers understand. God law that why we have bible study so we can example to like the holy ghost and baptism so the can know and understand
    We need more bible study

  16. 10 And Nehemiah[b] continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!”

Go and celebrate…. We must always celebrate and praise His name. The name above all names, we must celebrate Jesus on a daily basis. Yes there is a time and season for everything but we must not let it consume us. We must let Him give us the daily strength we need. We can’t do nothing without Him anyways….so why not let Him take care of us. Rejoice for everything happen for the good, we might not understand everything but just let God be in control. No one else like you Jesus!!!! Love you Lord!!!

  17. Verses 13-17 are a short testimony of how the people read the word, understood and were convicted by the word, then applied the word. Too often we only get through steps one and two and never get to the point of actually applying the word. I remember a message from NAYC a few years back, preached by Bro. Chavis. He talked about the same thing these verses example. Just like the food we physically eat must be digested and turned into energy for us to work, the same concept applies spiritually. We must eat His Word, digest it by studying it and asking God to bless us with new convictions so we may draw closer to Him and be more like Him. Then, the most important step, we must apply the word, and convert this food into energy and go to work as His Word orders.

  18. UNIFIED FOR REVIVAL

1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.

In preparation for the Power of GOD to be revealed through the WORD of GOD.

The people gathered themselves together. They did not wait on somebody or something to gather them together. They were HUNGRY to hear what JESUS the WORD of GOD said.

NOTHING is more important than the WORD of GOD in our lives. The WORD of GOD is eternal and is forever settled, it will not change or fail. We must examine ourselves to see if we are in the FAITH. Following, adhering and relying on the WORD of GOD for our eternal direction.

If or when we lose our HUNGER and DESIRE to hear the WORD of GOD spoken into or over our lives, we are backslid and away from GOD. Repentance is necessary and a RENEWED HUNGER for the WORD of GOD must be sought.

I pray today that the SPIRIT of GOD will speak to our hearts today for a renewed HUNGER for GOD and HIS WORD (JESUS) to be evident in our lives, actions and intententions.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  19. 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

The Word of God (His law) is so important in our lives and we must daily rehearse it, write it on our hearts, keep it ever before us so that we walk in His ways and not our own.

  20. Then he said to them Go your way eat the fat drink the sweet and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared for this day is Holy to our Lord.

  21. 1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.

18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.

If our church would come together unified in our hunger for the word of the Lord we would see a revival like never before! Lord place that hunger on us!

  22. 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

I am thankful for the strength we can find in the Word and in the presence of God. The word becomes clearer each day as we read and apply it in our life. He is the joy of my life, the strength I lean into.

  23. 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.

There is no time to waist on complaining and grieving when your in the presence of God. The day is Holy because the word is being read. When we come together we should leave all our troubles behind us and worship the Lord without reservation.

  24. 7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.

8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

There is hunger for the word of God. Many people just have not heard the word of God. There are people that God has given them a hunger. We must be ready to do verse 8 and teach and cause them to understand… Bible studies.

  25. 18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.

Reading our bible is an important part of our walk with God. The knowledge of the word of God allows us to stand against everything the enemy throws our way.

  26. all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.
    Nehemiah 8:1 NIV
    http://bible.com/111/neh.8.1.NIV

Wow the two key ingredients for revival is unity and hunger for God’s word. When His people are United and hungry there nothing that God can’t show us.

  27. “And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!””
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭8:10 NLT

    GO and Celebrate!

  28. Nehemiah 8:14 (KJV Strong’s)
14 And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:

I enjoy driving my car. It gets me where I want to go in short order. Driving a car is one of the joys of modern technology. I love it especially since I know what it’s like to not have a vehicle.

When I first moved to Fort Worth I did not have a vehicle. I left mine in Oklahoma at some grocery store. So when I wanted to go to church I needed a ride. I gratefully road in the PoFW church van.

As time went on I rode with friends, then the day came when I had my own vehicle. I soon had the opportunity to drive others to church.

The first car was a junker, then the next was a bit better, and so on, and so on. Today God has blessed us with a wonderful vehicle, but I still remember what’s it’s like to not have a vehicle when I walk.

The feast of tabernacles brought everyone to square one. There were no high dollar booths. Just leaves and branches. Small huts, and tents lined the country side as each family lived in the booth for a few days.

I believe that God wants us to remember where we come from so we do not fall to the temptation of pride. If we aren’t careful we can become entitled and think we deserve this.

The truth is we all started off walking. We all started off as sinners. If it wasn’t for the Lord we wouldn’t be where we are today.

  29. 4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

The word of God (Jesus) records their reason, as well as the purpose of. There are many reasons for why things were done, which one is wise to seek out for oneself. Dear God, bless us with a desire to seek more of you. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  30. “And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.” Ezra blessed the Lord, which all the people agreed with, and thus confirmed the same. The people then continued by worshiping the Lord. We should also want to hear, the Lord’s word, and likewise seek to worship the Lord. God bless us with understanding and with hearts that long too worship you, in Jesus name.

  31. The ability to read is something we all need to have. Yet, when it comes to the Word of God the Bible we must read with understanding. Not just for knowledge but spiritual understanding. Let’s pray that God would open our understanding of His Word as we read the blog daily.

  32. Nehemiah 8:18 Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly.

What a huge difference when all the people get together in one accord. When we get in the mind set to be feed by his word, and worship in unity, God starts healing the hearts of the people. The mourning will turn into dancing.

  33. 3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

The people listened intently to the preacher. Today people have a hard time paying attention for an hour, just imagine the fit they might throw if they had to listen to the preacher all morning.

  34. 1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.

I hear the rain coming as Ezra reads the word of God to the Israelites.

  35. “And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭8:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And all that could hear with understanding,”. This really atruck me in the fact that so many times when we are communications people might ask, can you hear me? But the person might lack understanding. Also it reminds me of the New Testament when Jesus said, “he that have an ear to hear…”. There are times when people listen with understanding and times where things just seem to float away. I’m purposive to be someone with understanding rather than a lack there of.

  36. 1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel.
In order for the people to understand His word, we need to make sure the Word is accessible, meaning translating it or interpreting it into their language. God will intervene on a divine level for revelation, but we should also give all believers a good foundation of language to start on.

  37. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

The first thing that caught my attention is their worship and reverence to God. These people were there to learn, to hear his word, but before they did, they showed reverence to God by standing, lifting their hands and bowing before him. Then when they understood the word, there was grieving or repentance, but were told to rejoice because they had understanding of the word. We must ensure that our guests and saints alike have understanding of the word preached because if not, the enemy will steal that word away from them and it will not be able to spring into life in that person’s heart.

  38. 5 Ezra stood on the platform in full view of all the people. When they saw him open the book, they all rose to their feet.

Learn something new, actual verse that supports the standing while reading the Word, especially from the pulpit. Its to give the honor to the Lord, and respect the position of the man of God.
