Nehemiah 12

1 Now these are the priests and the Levites that went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,

2 Amariah, Malluch, Hattush,

3 Shechaniah, Rehum, Meremoth,

4 Iddo, Ginnetho, Abijah,

5 Miamin, Maadiah, Bilgah,

6 Shemaiah, and Joiarib, Jedaiah,

7 Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, Jedaiah. These were the chief of the priests and of their brethren in the days of Jeshua.

8 Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, which was over the thanksgiving, he and his brethren.

9 Also Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, were over against them in the watches.

10 And Jeshua begat Joiakim, Joiakim also begat Eliashib, and Eliashib begat Joiada,

11 And Joiada begat Jonathan, and Jonathan begat Jaddua.

12 And in the days of Joiakim were priests, the chief of the fathers: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah;

13 Of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan;

14 Of Melicu, Jonathan; of Shebaniah, Joseph;

15 Of Harim, Adna; of Meraioth, Helkai;

16 Of Iddo, Zechariah; of Ginnethon, Meshullam;

17 Of Abijah, Zichri; of Miniamin, of Moadiah, Piltai:

18 Of Bilgah, Shammua; of Shemaiah, Jehonathan;

19 And of Joiarib, Mattenai; of Jedaiah, Uzzi;

20 Of Sallai, Kallai; of Amok, Eber;

21 Of Hilkiah, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah, Nethaneel.

22 The Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, were recorded chief of the fathers: also the priests, to the reign of Darius the Persian.

23 The sons of Levi, the chief of the fathers, were written in the book of the chronicles, even until the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.

24 And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise and to give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, ward over against ward.

25 Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were porters keeping the ward at the thresholds of the gates.

26 These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest, the scribe.

27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.

28 And the sons of the singers gathered themselves together, both out of the plain country round about Jerusalem, and from the villages of Netophathi;

29 Also from the house of Gilgal, and out of the fields of Geba and Azmaveth: for the singers had builded them villages round about Jerusalem.

30 And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.

31 Then I brought up the princes of Judah upon the wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave thanks, whereof one went on the right hand upon the wall toward the dung gate:

32 And after them went Hoshaiah, and half of the princes of Judah,

33 And Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam,

34 Judah, and Benjamin, and Shemaiah, and Jeremiah,

35 And certain of the priests’ sons with trumpets; namely, Zechariah the son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Michaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph:

36 And his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azarael, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God, and Ezra the scribe before them.

37 And at the fountain gate, which was over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall, above the house of David, even unto the water gate eastward.

38 And the other company of them that gave thanks went over against them, and I after them, and the half of the people upon the wall, from beyond the tower of the furnaces even unto the broad wall;

39 And from above the gate of Ephraim, and above the old gate, and above the fish gate, and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Meah, even unto the sheep gate: and they stood still in the prison gate.

40 So stood the two companies of them that gave thanks in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me:

41 And the priests; Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Michaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets;

42 And Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer.

43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

44 And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.

45 And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.

46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God.

47 And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.

  1. Praising your God….

    I love when the word talks about using cymbals and trumpets to praise God with. It’s reality to wake me up and start praising the Lord.

    What a day it will be when we can praise Him forever when He comes back to get us.
    I love you, Jesus.

  2. Verse 43 MSG “That day they offered great sacrifices, an exuberant celebration because God had filled them with great joy. The women and children raised their happy voices with all the rest. Jerusalem’s jubilation was heard far and wide.” Psalm 95:1-2 MSG “Come, let’s shout praises to God, raise the roof for the Rock who saved us! Let’s march into his presence singing praises, lifting the rafters with our hymns!” Psalm 66:8 AMP says “Bless our God, O peoples, And make the sound of His praise be heard abroad”.

  3. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    44 And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.

  4. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

  5. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    47 And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron

    Every day we should be giving thanks for the opportunities to sacrifice unto God according to our portion He has given us and ability to sanctify everything we are apart of.

  6. 43. Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    Those that were afar off knew something was going on because they heard the sound of it.
    If we are silent, those that are afar off spiritually will never know the source of our joy and salvation.

    Acts 2:
    6. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

    39. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

  7. 45 And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.

    46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God.
    David seems to be very passionate about music, praise and worship. He loves to have everything in order so that it flows smoothly. Thanksgiving and praise should be something that all of us are passionate about because ” God inhabits the praises of His people “

  8. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    Praise God so that others will know of His goodness and blessings.

  9. 44 That same day men were appointed to be responsible for the storerooms for the offerings, the firstfruits, and the tithes. They saw to it that the portion directed by The Revelation for the priests and Levites was brought in from the farms connected to the towns. Judah was so appreciative of the priests and Levites and their service; 45 they, along with the singers and security guards, had done everything so well, conducted the worship of their God and the ritual of ceremonial cleansing in a way that would have made David and his son Solomon proud. 46 That’s the way it was done in the olden days, the days of David and Asaph, when they had choir directors for singing songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. MSG
    Reading these verses all that went thru my mind was the song:
    Send up Judah,
    Send Up Judah,
    Send Up Judah,
    Send up Judah…
    For everything He has done,
    Every victory He has won,
    Send up Praise.
    Let that be our song today in our hearts when we are having trouble at work, home, grocery store, etc……have a blessed day!

  10. Nehemiah 12:43
    And on that day they offerd GREAT SACRIFICES, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in jerusalem.

    This is what comes to my mind when I read this passage: the joy of the Lord is my strength, when I think of his goodness what he’s done for me..

  11. 43 Many sacrifices were offered on that joyous day, for God had given the people cause for great joy. The women and children also participated in the celebration, and the joy of the people of Jerusalem could be heard far away. (NLT)

    Hallelujah! I pray such a joyous celebration be held this weekend in Jesus Name!

  12. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    It’s pleasing to the Lord when everyone offers him a sincere sacrifice and you do it joyfully.

  13. GROW YOUR JOY THROUGH THANKSGIVING

    43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    Thanksgiving to the believer is more than a holiDAY in the fall month of November.

    Thanksgiving is a HolyDAY opportunity for every DAY of our life to express our Thanksgiving for the Mercy of GOD and our PRAISE to the ONE GOD JESUS who is, was and is to come with the ability to deliver us from the hand of the adversary, protect us from the wiles of the devil and bless us with favor from the heavens.

    However we learn from this chapter that there is also “that day”. When they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced in all that GOD had done for and through them. JOY was so strong that it was heard afar off!

    MSG
    43 That day they offered great sacrifices, an exuberant celebration because God had filled them with great joy. The women and children raised their happy voices with all the rest. Jerusalem’s jubilation was heard far and wide.

    Praisers prepare!

    Let The POFW speed the JOY of JESUS loud and far in the region of Fort Worth.

    43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    They did with thanksgiving. And praise rejoiced in the lord

  15. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    Everybody was assigned to do something. We all must work for the Lord but what are we truly doing to bring or reach the souls of this city. We must WORK to reach the souls that are crying for the Lord. I have never rejoiced so much in teaching someone a HBS, going to outreach, cookie visits, revisits. Being able to have that one on one contact with the souls and seeing them grow is a feeling that can’t be explained. I want the Lord to tell me thou good and faithful servant….
    I will be at your post working for you Lord!!!!

    21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matt 25:21

    Let’s continue me I not the Lord with a grateful heart singing praises unto Him, sacrificing all for He is worthy. Filling our hands with tithe and offers NGOs unto Him. Rejoice not for He is good and His Mercies endureth for ever!!!!!

    Another example of responsibilities of Judah the praisers. Praise sets the atmosphere and changes things.

    Our worship and our praise is shifting the atmosphere
    Till the heavens are open
    This praise is shifting
    Shifting the atmosphere
    For breakthrough in healing
    Our worship is shifting the atmosphere
    It’s moving and it’s breaking
    This worship is shifting the atmosphere
    Every yoke is destroyed
    Every chain is broken
    This worship is shifting the atmosphere
    It’s moving it’s breaking
    Our worship is shifting the atmosphere
    Till the heavens are open
    For breakthrough healing
    This worship is shifting the atmosphere
    It’s moving and it’s breaking
    Our worship is shifting the atmosphere
    It’s moving and it’s breaking
    My praise is shifting the atmosphere

  18. 45 And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.

  19. Nehemiah 12:43, “Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.”

    “Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.” Ps. 150:6

  20. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

  21. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    44 And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.

    Their thanksgiving and great joy was preceded by offering great sacrifices. (Even the children felt the joy that their parents felt) God had given them favor and was their help to rebuild and as they looked at all he had done for them, they felt great joy. What has God done for us? Count your blessings and give back to the Lord with rejoicing! Be thankful.

  22. iLove to Grow in the Word
    “The custom of having choir directors to lead the choirs in hymns of praise and thanksgiving to God began long ago in the days of David and Asaph.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭12:46‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    Some customs at The Pentecostals of Fort Worth go all the way back to King David. We should load the choir onto the trailer and sing throughout the neighood one Sunday 😀👍

  23. 45 And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.

    46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God.

    We also need to keep the word of God close to our hearts!

  24. 27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.

    This entire chapter is filled with praises and singing. Loud singing, gladness with thanksgiving. Oh when I feel distraught or just wondering what is next God if I will remeber the dedication of my heart to God and come before Him with singing, gladness then I know assuredly there is still a celebration in my life of all God has ever been to me. We must rebuild our walls daily in His presence and rejoice with gladness of all He has and is doing for us.

  25. v46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chiefs of singers, and songs of praise and Thanksgiving to God.

    This verse let’s us know that in the days of old they were encouraged to praise, give Thanksgiving and
    worship GOD. If we want to succeed as the early Church did we must also continue in worship and praise unto GOD. For HE IS WORTHY and by doing so we position ourselves to access HIS blessings and benefit from HIS glory in our lives.

  26. Nehemiah 12:43 (NLT)
    43 Many sacrifices were offered on that joyous day, for God had given the people cause for great joy. The women and children also participated in the celebration, and the joy of the people of Jerusalem could be heard far away.

    Sacrifices were given to God because of joy, and then they had joy that could be heard far away after they gave.

    I believe that this is the correct attitude of sacrifice. When we give to God it should never be grudgingly, or thinking of how much it is going to hurt. Those are states of mind that lack faith.

    We give sacrificially because we know God loves us. The people didn’t mention at any point what affect their giving would have on them because they knew God was taking care of it all.

  27. “And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over against them, to praise and to give thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, ward over against ward.” The word of God (Jesus) records that David, was a man of God. David was the king and a man (creation) after God’s own heart; nevertheless he was also restricted by God (Creator) on what he could, and would accomplish. One is wise to study the word of God so that one may not be deceived. Dear God, let your will be done. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  28. “Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.” They were expressing the joy of the Lord, which was given to them by the Lord. There will always be joy in the Lord, even when there may not be elsewhere; therefore we should always focus on him. God help us not too become distracted or lose our focus on you, in Jesus name.

  29. The custom of having choir directors to lead the choirs in hymns of praise and thanksgiving to God began long ago in the days of David and Asaph.
    Nehemiah 12:46 NLT

    Hallelujah!! And we also see in this chapter why we sing loud. Thats the way the people of God praise!

  30. 47 And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.

    God had given us everyday and it is importanat that we give our portion to Him daily.

  31. Nehemiah 13:22 (KJV Strong’s)
    22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

    When you stand for what is right regardless of what others do God has your back. Nehemiah was outnumbered. Many of the people were disobedient and living in sin but he still stood for what was right and tried to get the people back in good graces with the Lord.

    God will always take care of his own. Don’t fear man. Fear the Lord and do his will.

  32. 27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.

    Joy on the Wall

    I’ve never been a fan about walls. Especially because that’s been a thing in these times, that to Hispanics is not a good topic of discussion. Through out my life I have learn several things from my father and I think this would apply here.

    There are things that he would agree to just because he was outnumbered in his opinion. He just went along with it and even made the rest feel like he was glad he made the decision even though he didn’t agree. Regardless what I think, that the wall won’t help be a better preventive measure, that it is economically not feasible with this fragile economy, but if it give the majority a sense of peace, and tranquility. If it makes the majority smile and go about the lives, then build it.

    My father always said, “Viva la Paz” or “Let Peace Reign”

  33. 27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps.

    Rededication is something to rejoice over. When the prodigals come back home there should be huge celebration. When a soul is grafted back into the tree of life its a process, its painful and all the praise is to God for restoration.

  34. 43Many sacrifices were offered on that joyous day, for God had given the people cause for great joy. The women and children also participated in the celebration, and the joy of the people of Jerusalem could be heard far away.

    We should celebrate also when good happens to us. And celebrate and give praise to God even during our trials of life. Not only, but your family will rejoice with you!

  35. 43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

    Is Nehemiah referring to the music of the choir being heard from afar or as this scripture states the joy heard from afar? I believe this is an important difference. Outstanding music may impress people, but it will be the spirit behind the music that persuades people and ushers the spirit of God into the service. Thus, I believe this verse is not talking about the talented choirs or the gifted musicians; it is referring to the joy of the congregation. We live in a world starved for happiness; in a world starved for happiness, authentic joy is one of the most elusive creatures of our time.

    There are few things more attractive than a beautiful smile and a cheerful disposition. We cannot allow ourselves to be tempted away from our joy and must learn to rely on that joy during our trials. It is too easy to allow circumstances to plunge us into a spirit of negativity and despair. If your happy and you know it…
