Nehemiah 13

1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;

2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

3 Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

4 And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah:

5 And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.

6 But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:

7 And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

8 And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff to Tobiah out of the chamber.

9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.

11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.

22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

23 In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

24 And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.

25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

30 Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;

31 And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

  1. Verse 2 CEV “This was because they had refused to give food and water to Israel and had hired Balaam[a] to call down a curse on them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing.” My God can do anything! We just need to keep Joyfully reaching out as we are blessed to be a blessing!

Genesis 50:20 AMP “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present outcome, that many people would be kept alive [as they are this day].”

Romans 8:28 AMP “And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.

  2. Nehemiah 13:25 (NIV)
I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath in God’s name and said: “you are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.

A level of maturity needs to be in a Christian Life, to be able to receive this kind of rebuke from the man of God. Understanding and comprehending that it is for our own good.

I had the privilege to be a Shepherd when I was little, and I do remember when I had certain sheep that would not listen, I had to tie them up for their own good. I had to guard them from the coyotes.

  3. 5And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.

  4. “So I confronted them and called down curses on them. I beat some of them and pulled out their hair. I made them swear in the name of God that they would not let their children intermarry with the pagan people of the land.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭13:25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

True revival requires extreme measures. Today’s church has a lot to learn from the Bible. Many Saints are mad at the Man of God for small things, can you imagine if Pastor started pulling out folks hair. Nehemiah did not apologize for the way he treated the people of God, he reminded God of his righteousness toward Him. What some folks call mean, and rude, and abuse, God calls revival. Lol

  5. 11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

Today I’m thankful for the many laborers of POFW who look after the House of God to see that everything is in it’s place. It takes all of us working together to make the Church operate in a Godly fashion and order. The small jobs are not unnoticed, and the many hours are recorded in heaven.

  6. FILL THE HOUSE OF GOD

11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

In a society that primarily does not know or seek JESUS to be their GOD. The attrition of deception has even leaked into the church. The church and its worship opportunities are not as important as they once were. People attend when they want and on their terms, then are easily offended by something said or done.

I pray the sprit of the prophet would come on us today and we would ask the question.

WHY IS THE HOUSE OF GOD FORSAKEN?

Then we will GO gather them together and set them in their place in our Fathers house.

    Revival NOW.

  7. 25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

Everyone need a man of god that will keep you in line. We might now like we might not even agree with everything. God put those people in your life for a reason not for you to not agree with everything but they are there to help you, Pray for you. And knock some sense in your head time to time.
Thank you Jesus for the great man and woman of god that you put in my life

  8. 25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

Keep your eyes on the real prize!! Be careful of anything that draws you away from God. Don’t intertwine yourself with the things of this world. We are a peculiar people, set apart.

  9. 30 So I purged out everything foreign and assigned tasks to the priests and Levites, making certain that each knew his work. (NLT)

Purge yourselves and value His house so much as to guard it. Why risk and cause temptation to sin? Know your duties and uphold them with clean hands. It’s not just for our sake, but for the new guests and babes in Christ, who are depending on us to make His house a sanctuary of righteousness and restoration.

  10. 25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

The people had made a promise to God, but during the absence of Nehemiah they had broken that covenant. Nehemiah did what he did to get the attention of people in their disobedience! The man of God is so important in the lives of people but if the absence of the man of God makes you forget your commitments to God, you might need to question your relationship with God.

He used Solomon as an example to teach his people that if a great king can fall because of a wrong influence, than others can too! Solomon was a great King and these people had many talents but you’re gifts and strengths won’t be of much use if you fail to deal with your weaknesses! As we read the Bible we must learn from the mistakes of others!

  11. Nehemiah purposefully looked at the organization and daily works of the Temple. He corrected the sin and set things back on track according to God’s word and ways and wanted God to remember his works. Every church needs it’s elders and 5 fold ministry and also the saints to oversee that there is no sin in the daily works of the church. Pastor keeps himself covered by Bishop Foster and heeds the advise of those who can speak into life so that this church and ministry is protected. Thank God for the provision of overseers of the church!

  12. 27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

Don’t listen to all the thoughts and words of others who do evil. The actions of evil are not meant to be mirrored, we need to stay clean and clear in our minds and hearts. Let our paths be held together by Jesus.

  13. 2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.
God has a way of taking what we see as a curse, as negative and making it a blessing! God is able to turn our situation around and make it better for us!

  14. Nehemiah 13:6-9
    6) But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:
    7) And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
    8) And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.
    9) Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

This passage of scripture made me THANKFUL for the LEADERS, Great Men and Women of God in our church, who PROTECT the church and don’t allow things to happen while Pastor and Sis. Watts have to be away.
Thank You for LEADING at All Times!

  15. When we follow God, there will be opposition. It is important that we do not allow opposition to detour us from what God has planned for us. Our hope is in Jesus and he will give us strength in the midst of our battle.

  16. “In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.”
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭13:23-24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

This is what happens to people when they begin to mix where they shouldn’t. When we give in and let the world mingle with our spirit it causes us to have “children” spiritually that can’t speak heir holy language. The spiritual language is lost because holimness is lost. We must be pure to our spiritual pursuits so that all we produce is holy.

  17. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

  18. Surely your sin will find you out. Even those thugs that you think your getting away with will start to show in your children. You must always remember that someone is always watching you.

  19. 2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

God will turn our sorrow to Joy. He will also cause the efforts of our enemies to become blessings for us. We are His people and he blesses us and protects us.

  20. 21. They also received a warning from me. Nehemiah: What are you up to, sleeping here outside the wall? If I find you here again, you will be removed by force! They never came back on the Sabbath again. The Voice

We must be careful of what lies in waiting outside the gates of our lives and our families’ lives. If we don’t remove the dangers by force, they will creep in and destroy everything they can.

    Matthew 11:12
And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

  21. “Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.” The word of God (Jesus) records unto whom his deeds were done. One should strive to do all one can for God (Creator) first, which includes treatment of his creation (people). Dear God (Judge), let us never forget that you shed your precious blood for people (souls), and not for things/objects of this world. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  22. “Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.” They were banned because they did not welcome them. We should always be mindful, and give careful consideration as to the Lord’s view of matters. God help us, so that our ways would be pleasing unto you, in Jesus name.

  23. ““Wasn’t this exactly what led King Solomon of Israel into sin?” I demanded. “There was no king from any nation who could compare to him, and God loved him and made him king over all Israel. But even he was led into sin by his foreign wives. How could you even think of committing this sinful deed and acting unfaithfully toward God by marrying foreign women?””
    ‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭13:26-27‬ ‭NLT‬‬
    No compromise in any area.

  24. 2 because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.)

Jesus help us daily receive your wordb and your spirit Lord. I need you daily Lord.

“but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35

  25. 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

When God brings out of evil, when he brings you out of sin, you shouldn’t run back to the same spot from where you came from! You need to turn away from the things you did that are keeping you away from God and keep moving forward in him.

  26. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

In other words, even with God demonstrating His love for you, and all the people of God loving you, the person that you pick as your spouse, if you do not chose wisely and you are unevenly yoked, can cause you to sin.

There are great men of God with so much potential that are not serving God to the full capacity of there ministry or even exercising there calling because they chose to pursue a relationship with a woman. We are deceived to think that we can have both, when we do not give God’s calling importance like the other.

The rich young ruler was called by Jesus himself to become his disciple. Surely Jesus saw the potential that he could use this young man to advance this kingdom, he had grew up Pentecostal after all. It wasn’t just the money that we couldn’t give up. It was what came with it, the respect, the luxury, the VIP treatment, the prestige, were all things that no common man had. it was his identity, everything he knew. The price was too high in his eyes, and he chose the latter.

  27. 3 Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

Sometimes we have to separate ourselves from the things we’ve attached ourselves to thr most because they are toxic. When we do we become separated unto God stepping into his covering of righteousness and holiness. Coming out of darkness and into his marvelous light.

  28. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

No work or service for the Lord goes unnoticed. He will reward the faithful.

  29. 2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

I am not perfect. I know this. I can’t make hurts go away instantly; I can’t forgive instantly at an emotional/subconscious level; I can’t turn the other cheek gracefully yet. I still feel human emotions, and I still feel human pain. With this in mind, I feel sympathy and empathy for all people who are hurt (mentally, physically, and psychically) by others.

Is it too far to attempt to bridge the gap between curses and blessings. How much curses hurt; how much they encourage more anger and bitterness and hatred. They tear and destroy: even the littlest curses, such as a harsh word like stupid or shut up. There are those who do not understand the curses they bring to life; they do not see their terrible effects, but from all I have seen, they are born of darkness and spread darkness, and are a stumbling block to everyone.

On the opposite hand; how powerful a blessing is, that can destroy the curse, heal over the hurt, and teach at the same time. How much a blessing spreads joy and peace to others! Blessings build up and strengthen and increase understanding and sympathy.

Let’s practice blessings versus curses; even when the situation or person might deserve a curse.

  30. 2 For they had not provided the Israelites with food and water in the wilderness. Instead, they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing.

This shows, God is a forgiving God. Even though you sin purposely, God will forgive and bless you. It’s up to each individual to ask for forgiveness.
