Esther 1

1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)

2 That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,

3 In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:

4 When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.

5 And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;

6 Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.

7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.

8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man’s pleasure.

9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.

10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,

11 To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.

12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

13 Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment:

14 And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king’s face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)

15 What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?

16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.

17 For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.

18 Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.

19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.

20 And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.

21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:

22 For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.

  1. 20 And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.
21 And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:
22 For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
    Colossians 3:18 KJV

  2. If it had not been for so much pride and wanting to show off his wealth and his wife, he wouldn’t have been embarrassed in front of the leaders in his own palace. Your finances and your wife are not matters of public discussion.

  3. REBELLION IS JUDGED

12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

I am confident that Vashti knew exactly what she was committing to when she accepted the invitation to lead as queen. Her first commitment was to the king and the second to the people. We can liken this principal to leaders in the church. Our first commitment is to JESUS and the second is serving HIS people. Leaders often find frustration in rebellion from followers, regardless of the level of leadership from decorating a room, to singing a song, to attending a prayer meeting or a monthly planning meeting, to attending worship service, to teaching a bible lesson, to preaching a service. Positional leaders accept the call to leadership knowing the expectations in advance.

However, like Vashti, people get caught up doing their OWN thing, serving their own will, throwing their own party and ignore the call of responsibility that accompanies the position. Vashti was enjoying the position, hosting her own party.

9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.

Judgement is often viewed as bias or unfair from outsiders. The council of the king assisted him in looking to the future and the implications of the REBELLION of the queen.

When we act in REBELLION; not in position that we are called to be in, make commitments to GOD or Leaders and don’t keep them, refuse to attend when we are asked, refuse to complete an assignment when we are asked. These are the FRUIT of REBELLION.

    What happened to Vashti?

19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.

    REPLACEMENT

The deception of satan is that he would like for us to think that we are the only person that can do what we do. However, TRUTH says GOD works in the Night and he can raise up a replacement OVERNIGHT. There are people that hunger for the work and favor of GOD, they simply need an opportunity. I pray for the WISDOM of GOD in dealing with rebellious leaders.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  4. Don’t be so prideful to think only you can fill a role. Like a tree whose leaves may fall, new leaves will always regrow in the fallen’s place.

  5. 19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.

20 And when the king’s decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.

  6. Lost in the Kingdom

12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

How sad that Queen Vashti had everything at her hands, beauty, wealth, anything she wanted. Yet she lost everything even the love of her husband and was banished because of her refusal to go before the king.

Spiritually we cannot allow anything to keep us from submitting to our King Jesus it is not worth it. We have everything and more in His presence.
Further more rebellion was set in her heart somewhere for refusing to come to her own husband when beckoned. We must submit to our husband in the natural and to our King Jesus in the spiritual. There is beauty in submission and many rewards to be obtained

  7. We need to be aware that we are a reflection of our husband. God is the head of the men and men the head of the women. No matter what we need to keep in mind that disobedience is not good, and will curse you.

I think Ephesians 5:22-33 explains it best but our God is a God of covenant and in the same way that instructions are given to the wives to submit more importantly there is instruction to husbands of how to care for their wives. It is my popinion that the submission is dependent upon the care. I was always very hard on this because it was hard for me to submit and surrender all, but once Inlearn what Ephesians says I have found a great blessing in submitting TO GOD, to my Pastor, and to my husband; all are different types of submission but equally blessed.

    Ephesians 5:22-33

    • Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[b] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

  8. 21And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:

22 For he sent letters into all the king’s provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.

  9. 12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

We may not always agree with others that rule above us but we are to be submissive to them. Vashti disobeying the king will cost her everything she was hoping to protect. A wise woman build up her home a foolish women tears it down with her own hands.

  10. Esther 1:15 According to the law what must be done to Queen Vashti? He asked. She has not obey the Command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken her. Then Memukan replied in presence of the king and the nobles Queen VashtiI has done wrong not only against the king but also against all the nobles and the people’s of all the provincesame of king Xerxes. For the queen’s conduct will become known to all the women and so they will despise their husbands and say, King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come. This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility who have heard about the quern’s conduct will respond to all thr king’s nobles in thr same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord.

  11. 12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his c9hamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

Regardless who is in position we must obey those that have the rule over us.

  12. iLove to grow in the Word
5When it was all over, the king gave a banquet for all the people, from the greatest to the least, who were in the fortress of Susa. It lasted for seven days and was held in the courtyard of the palace garden. 12But when they conveyed the king’s order to Queen Vashti, she refused to come. This made the king furious, and he burned with anger.

I wonder if this is the parable that Jesus spoke of when he spoke that the king made a banquet and those he invited refused to come. Nevertheless, we are the bride of Christ and when he calls us we must come or get left behind. We, as ministers must always be available to serve King Jesus… lest we be replaced by another.

  13. And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.

19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she

When you are in a position of liberty you are looked upon by many as an example. Your actions lead loudly. Any type of rebellion will get you replaced.

  14. 15 What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?

As women we are influencers, either for good or bad. We must be careful in every decision we make. We must determine who the decision is going to effect and how is it going to effect them. Although Vashti thought she was being smart by not allowing her husband to parade her in front of the other guests, she set a precedent that cost her the “queenship.”

That precedence was rebellion. If our actions cause someone else to be rebellious or brings contention or discord, we are out of the will of God and need to repent and ask God to give us space for repentance.

  15. 12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

Vashti allowed her evil spirit and rebellion to put her in a position of being replaced from her coveted position. We cannot allow ourselves to lifted up or prideful in our positions that we believe we can disobey our leadership. That always leads to spiritual death not independence.

  16. Esther 1:19 (MSG) “So, if the king agrees, let him pronounce a royal ruling and have it recorded in the laws of the Persians and Medes so that it cannot be revoked, that Vashti is permanently banned from King Xerxes’ presence. And then let the king give her royal position to a woman who knows her place.”

  17. “Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king’s manner toward all that knew law and judgment”. The word of God (Jesus) identifies the king sought counsel. One should never forget while counsel may appear to be sought, it may not always be welcomed, or received. Dear God, help us that we would see self, as you do. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  18. “But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.” The queen should have went to the king; however there could have been any number of reasons why she did not, which were not identified. Similarly all should want to seek the Lord; however the reason that some do not, could also be for any number of reasons. God help us learn to pray for your will, in Jesus name.

  19. Rebellion in Leadership…

Leaders are always sending messages to the followers whether it be good or bad. When rebellion gets into leadership it is very dangerous. It is necessary to deal quickly with a wound before it spreads. An untreated infection turns into gangrene and body parts start to fall off, and the next step is death. The quicker you deal with an infection the better the chances of servival.

  20. Esther 1:19 (KJV Strong’s)
19 If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.

When you refuse to obey the king you make yourself equal to him. You say that you have authority to do something else. This is rebellion and an attempt to subjugate the throne.

    Simple obedience simply saves.

  21. This chapter reminded me of the sermon that Bro. Tallant once preached at the church “The High Cost of a Bad Decision”. Whether she knew it was going to or not; Queen Vashti’s disobedience cost her, her position.

  22. 16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.

Our actions influence others and there is always someone watching. Whether we are having a good day or bad, someone is take note of what we have or have not done.

  23. 5 And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king’s palace;

There was a feast prepared daily! The second thing we find in this chapter is that there was rebellion in the heart of the one that should be the most loyal to the king, his queen.

We can see that the King of kings daily prepares a feast for us and it is our responsibility to be faithful and loyal in attendance. When we do not fit feel are the obligation he strips us of our rightsand searches for a faithful and loyal servant to sit in heavenly places with him. That whatsoever they bind no earth shall be bound in heaven.
The Queen’s rebellion could have caused others to follow in her footsteps. So, in an effort to kill the spirit of rebellion the queen was cut off from her royal rights.

  24. “Memucan answered the king and his nobles, “Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king but also every noble and citizen throughout your empire. Women everywhere will begin to despise their husbands when they learn that Queen Vashti has refused to appear before the king. Before this day is out, the wives of all the king’s nobles throughout Persia and Media will hear what the queen did and will start treating their husbands the same way. There will be no end to their contempt and anger.”
    ‭‭Esther‬ ‭1:16-18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Leaders have influence on all who are under them. The decision you make really does matter.

  25. 6 Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.

Often times, I have found myself in compromising positions because I got caught up in the “festivities” , enjoying sin for a season. Let me remind you the wages of sin is death. Don’t get caught up in the “festivities” just because it looks pretty, or because someone else says you have too…

  26. Sin – where does it start?

16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.

Sounds like sin might be the main problem between us and God. But here’s what Paul says in Romans: these things are not the primary cause of our separation from God, they happen because we are separated from God. The things we label as ‘sin’ – are the consequence of the real issue: our worship and relationship problem.

The root problem that you and I have is that we don’t respond to God as God. We see that He is God. We look at Him and we’re like: yup, that’s God. But, according to Romans, we don’t see fit to respond to Him that way. We don’t want to honor Him as God. If we think that our ‘sin’ tendencies are the source of the problem, it will lead us to behavior management. Consider these: the lusts of our hearts to impurity; the dishonoring of our bodies; dishonorable passions; a debased mind; all manner of unrighteousness; all manner of evil. If these things are the penalty – the result of the problem – then fixing them will be impossible.

If you and I want to wage war on our sin, it has to be on the root not the response. We have to wage war on our idolatry. We have to battle to honor God as our King, Lord and Savior. The issue that has led to our separation from God is the same for every person; whether it is pride, envy or adultery, it’s the same problem: we don’t want to honor God as God.

  27. 13He immediately consulted with his wise advisers, who knew all the Persian laws and customs, for he always asked their advice.

A king that needs advice! I don’t see him as a great King, but someone who rules by intimidation. Instead of talking to the queen, he rather make an example of her. We too should be careful of receiving advice from individuals who will try to lead us down the wrong path.
