Job 20

1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

2 Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.

3 I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.

4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

6 Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;

7 Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

8 He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.

9 The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.

10 His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands shall restore their goods.

11 His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust.

12 Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;

13 Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth:

14 Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him.

15 He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

16 He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper’s tongue shall slay him.

17 He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter.

18 That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein.

19 Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not;

20 Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired.

21 There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods.

22 In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.

23 When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

24 He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through.

25 It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him.

26 All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle.

27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

  1. Zophar speaks to Job about the wicked man in verses 4-5 NIV “Surely you know how it has been from of old, ever since mankind[a] was placed on the earth, that the mirth of the wicked is brief, the joy of the godless lasts but a moment.” But Job knew his heart and so did God. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 MSG says “So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.” Same verses in the NLT “That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are[a] being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”

  2. 27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

  3. 4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,
5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

Let us remember that a short victory in a battle does not mean you’ve won the war. Let us preserver and endure until He comes. For He has already won the victory. Meaning the Calvary is coming!!!

“calvary are fast moving shock troops (on horses). good generals new how valuable these units were..infantry was sent forward to engage the enemy in a frontal attack, and the calvary in reserve (not engaged) when a weak spot in the enemy lines was observed the general (napoleon was a master at this see also alexander the great and julius ceasar) sent in the calvary at full speed devastating the enemy lines at the weak point and breaking through to the rear….once in the rear they were able to attack without mercy collapsing the whole opposing army… and calvary was also used in flanking manuveres to get in the rear…..the invention of the tank made horse mounted calvary obsolete during ww2 ……during vietnam the invention of the air calvary using helicopters…today u.s army calvary units are made up of humvee’s

Jesus Christ went to Calvary that we may receive everlasting Life and one day He will ride in on His white horse and the victory of the wicked will be no more. Yet, thanks be to God that He has caused us to triumph over the enemy. For we can untilize the power of the Holy Ghost that lives within us.

    2 Corinthians 10:4
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

  4. 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

    6 Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;

7 Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

8 He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night.

We will not always see the reward for our sacrifice here on earth and what we are sewing into the kingdom just as much as the wicked do not see what will come of their ways.

  5. Job 20:29 (MSG)
29 There! That’s God’s blueprint for the wicked—
what they have to look forward to.”

    Matthew 13:49 (KJV Strong’s)
49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,

The unrepentant wicked have nothing to look forward too. They’re future is filled with pain and torment. They’re choices will cause them to be forever separated from God. This is why the church’s job is so important.

It is not our job to label the wicked. As Paul says “and such were some of you.” Before Jesus freed us we were on the same path toward destruction.

Let us not lick our lips desiring to see the wicked destroyed but instead wet our eyes with tears in compassion for these lost men and women.

Let God determine who is wicked. Let us love them and reach for them before it’s too late.

  6. 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

Don’t be deceived that the wicked is doing well. The enemy wants us to believe that sin is some little thing. It is out responsibility to stay in the word of God and not stray from the truth. The truth is what keeps us strong and enables us to press through everything the enemy throws our way.

  7. Job 20:5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

He affirms that the destruction of the wicked is not only certain, but speedy.
Psalm 103:16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

The pleasures and gains of sin bring disease and pain; they end in remorse, anguish, and ruin.
Dissemble piety is double iniquity, and the ruin that attends it will be accordingly.

  8. 4. “Don’t you realize that from the beginning of time, ever since people were first placed on the earth,

    5. the triumph of the wicked has been SHORT LIVED and the joy of the godless has been only TEMPORARY? NLT

    Hebrews 11:24-26
    24. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;

    25. Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin FOR A SEASON;

    26. Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

Dissembled piety is double iniquity, and the ruin that attends it will be accordingly.

    Zophar’s Second Response to Job
    1Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:
    2“I must reply
    because I am greatly disturbed.
3I’ve had to endure your insults,
but now my spirit prompts me to reply.

As Zophar speaks the truth to Job about the judgements of God, it is very unfair that he is subliminally implying that Job is the wicked in which God has brought down. He is bringing false accusations against Job referring that these scriptures belong to Job:
27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

Once again, Job didnt lose everything because God was mad at him, Job lost everything simply because God allowed the enemy to take it for a season.

  11. Sometimes friends can be Ignorant!

    Message version
20 1-3 Zophar from Naamath again took his turn:

    “I can’t believe what I’m hearing!
You’ve put my teeth on edge, my stomach in a knot.
How dare you insult my intelligence like this!
Well, here’s a piece of my mind!
4-11 “Don’t you even know the basics,
how things have been since the earliest days,
when Adam and Eve were first placed on earth?
    The good times of the wicked are short-lived;
    godless joy is only momentary.
The evil might become world famous,
strutting at the head of the celebrity parade,
But still end up in a pile of dung.
Acquaintances look at them with disgust and say, ‘What’s that?’

Zohar, Job’s friend still attacks his friend with vicious words, as if Jiob is a wicked man. Job was going through the trial of his life and all his friend could come up with was how the wicked were going to end up.

There are such friends who have no idea why we go through trials, they first want to believe sin has occurred. Don’t be so quick to judge lest that which has come upon your friend in a trial may turn around and come upon you. We need to pray and lift others up as they are facing trials of this world. All are guilty we think when trials have come we have sinned yet I am learning it is God who is teaching me a new lesson in how to trust him in the moment. Amen

  12. 4 “Don’t you realize that from the beginning of time, ever since people were first placed on the earth,
5 the triumph of the wicked has been short lived and the joy of the godless has been only temporary? (NLT)

Hallelujah, what a hope we have to know that not only is God fighting for us, but if we endure, the time of the trial we face is only temporary and we will be victorious in the end!

  13. TEMPORARY GRATIFICATION

5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

This verse is reminiscent or yet prophetic of the death of JESUS. The triumph of satan that was 3 days or even the path of Judas and the deceptive kiss. No doubt the list could be complied to go on and on. We do not need another horror story or testimony of defeat.

It is time to GO make a difference, with a made up mind to follow, serve and build the Kingdom of our GOD.

Considering the TEMPORARY GRATIFICATION of the wicked, may the Lord JESUS, help us to push ourselves past doubts and fears of failure and surrender our complete will to GOD. As we accept that any victory or triumph gained through deceitful, wicked measures will be short lived and joy escaping immediately. I pray today that JESUS speaks to our heart to help us become the children of GOD that seek him for all moves and direction with sincereity and honesty as we serve one another with clean hands and a pure heart.

  14. This chapter talks about how a man fell into wickedness and lost the love of God. Verse 23-26 talks about him changing into a animal . When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

That is why we need to love god and follow him and listen to him for he is the way the truth and the life. Amen

  15. 2 Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.

3 I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.

4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

God send people to war us.

  16. Though evil is sweet in his mouth
and he hides it under his tongue,
13 though he cannot bear to let it go
and lets it linger in his mouth,
    14 yet his food will turn sour in his stomach;
it will become the venom of serpents within him.

We must let things go in order to remove that nasty venom inside of us that may want to destroy us. We can bless and curse with the same tongue. We have to let go of many things and let God transform us to HIS image NOT our image. If we do what we want it be destruction and pure rebellion against the GOD!!!! I can’t let nothing or noone fill my body with poison. That poison will destroy us. We must let God cleanse us DAILY!!! Cleanse me Lord daily!!!

  17. It is not the time to fall out of love with your first love Jesus! You may think the backsliders have it all and are having a good time, but they are not. They are miserable and drowning in their our sorrows. This chapter reading it had me thinking back to all the back sliders that have came and gone at POFW, where are they now? What have we done to try and reach them? Do we just give up on them since they are not here and move on, heaven forbid we keep praying for them and asking God to give them a repented heart that they will turn around before it is too late. Just like Job we have to take a stand with out friends when they are wanting us to do something that we know is wrong and do the right thing, even if it means that the friendship will end. We don’t have time to playing games pick who you hang around wisely and listen to positive talk not the negative.

  18. Practice what you preach, live as a sample to all. Pray and seek God in everything you do. Love your neighbor as yourself.

    • Practice what you preach, live as an example to all. Pray and seek God in everything you do. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  19. King David wrote in Psalm 73 (King James Version)
73 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.
2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

And here Job’s friend tells us the end of the wicked:
27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.
29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

Don’t envy the wealth of the anyone, esp the unrighteous, rather pray that God draws all people to him, great and small, for their salvation. Reach out to every person you can regardless of their status, because God can use their time, talent and treasures for his kingdom.

  20. Job 20:20 Surely he will have no respite from his craving: he cannot save himself by his treasure. Nothing is left for him to devour his prosperity will not endure. In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him, the full force of misery will come upon him.

Job’s friends blamed him as a wicked man because he was so afflicted here he describes their unkindness showing that what they condemned was capable of excuse. Harsh language from friends greatly adds to the weight of affliction yet it is best not to lay it to heart least we harbour resentment. When we see our friends in need let’s reach out to them in hope and love for the greatest commandment is love, love at all times.

  21. 29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

What a sad outlook for the wicked. We must consider our actions for they will outlive us. Decisions and destinies are made by them and we must take the time to pray about and search out what those decision to do evil are going to produce in the long run.

  22. 4. “Don’t you realize that from the beginning of time, ever since people were first placed on the earth,

    5. the triumph of the wicked has been SHORT LIVED and the joy of the godless has been only TEMPORARY? NLT
The wicked never prosper… their sin always catches up with them. You cannot continue to sin and think your getting away with it. The bible says there is “pleasure in sin” for a season. The pleasure will never be worth the eternal consequences.

  23. 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

Gaining a victory through wickedness is short lived. If we gain our victory through, prayer, praise, and pushing through our trail, we will gain a victory that will last! That does not mean we will never face another trial, but if we truly have victory we will never have to face that same situation again!

  24. Job 20:27-29
The heritage of a wicked man appointed unto him by God.
    27) The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.
    28) The increase of his house shall depart, and and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.
    29) This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

The heritage of the servants of the LORD
Isaiah 54:17, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, sand their righteousness is if me, saith the LORD.”

  25. 27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

La ira de Dios y su furor para el hombre que hace iniquidad pero su amor y grandes promesas años que temen a su nombre y hacen su voluntad

  26. 12 Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;

13 Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth:

Whom all that have backslide it didn’t take a night it was a process but while they are in that process wickedness sy arts coming to them and while they are still are trying to be in church the wickedness from their past starts to catch up to them and it gets to their mind and even if they are trying to come and surender to God but the enemu is there and well they have been so far from their past mistakes and drugs and alcohol, adultery, etc. Once they back slide they might come to church but won’t show all the wickednessthat I like honey to them the sweetest thing in there mouth but they will be ashamed of all that they have done. Even if all that sin hurts them and they would want to get out but they keep on going deeper into sin and all the hust and pain tagt they have they just don’t let it go .

  27. 4 “Don’t you realize that from the beginning of time, ever since people were first placed on the earth,
5 the triumph of the wicked has been short lived and the joy of the godless has been only temporary? (NLT)

  28. 11 His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust.

    12 Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;

We like to try and hide our sins that we do, but truth is God sees every sin that we commit, so none of our sins are ever truly hidden. God knows what we do behind the scenes.

  29. Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.(Job 20:2 KJV)

Our minds today are a special gift from God, it can potentially store 100 trillion of thoughts at once,it is also a tool that God wants to use in our ministry to fulfill his purposes. Yet till this day there’s a lot of people fighting for the access of our minds the fact is people are fighting and intentionally planning 24 hours a day to get our attention.

  30. 4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?
Since man was created God knew his sin. No matter how many skeletons you think you can hide from others, God knows our sin until we repent of them and the blood washes them away.

  31. 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? Not FOREVER but only for a moment.
This to shall pass, and the joy of the lord is my strength!

  32. Job states that one quick look around contradicts everything his friends have said about devine retribution. It doesn’t take much to see righteous people suffering and evil people prospering. Death doesn’t discriminate and awaits for both the wicked and righteous. God alone decides their fate. Accomplished people who have lived long lives can die, and others can breathe their last breath before ever really living life. Death is the greatest equalizer. The richest CEO and the poorest beggar, the meanest bully and the kindest friend will eventually turn to dust. What Job forgets to mention in his depressed state of cynicism is that the person who dies with faith in the Redeemer has a very different fate to look forward to than the ones who renounce God. We are victorious over death and destined to live in joy for eternity (1Co 15:51-57; Rev 21:3-4).

  33. Life isn’t always fair and we simply won’t ever have all the answers we search for. Therefore our faith cannot rest on our own understanding, no matter how correct we think it is. Our comfort in our darkest hours can come only from the God who promises to never abandon us (Dt 31:6)

  34. 12 Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;
13 Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth:

This reminds me how the devil deceives. Sweet and flattering with words, actions, people, etc.. he uses those things as distractions to get us off track. We must stay focused and live for God.

  35. Though the pride of the godless person reaches to the heavens and his head touches the clouds, he will perish forever, like his own dung; those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’
    Job 20:6‭-‬7 NIV

Pride can only take us so far before we come crashing down and our attitude and character begins to stink. Pride will takes us to the pits of hell if we are not care. We must always humble ourselves to God and those in authority over us. Humbleness will always take us farther than pride.

  36. 3 Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth:

14 Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him.

15 He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

If there is anything in me Lord that shouldnt be please remove it from my life. Until those things are removed God cannot try use us like he wants us too.

  37. 22 In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him.

23 When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

God is a Just God and he is forever having compassion on the wicked! When we fall short if we stay on the ground and dont do the right thing we will be in there on the ground until we make a decision to get up and trust God that he will forgive us as his word says, but we must repent, we may still be on the ground physically but when we reach up to our Father he gives us the strength to stand up and go again! Thank you Jesus for your strength!

  38. 27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

The wicked think that their way is a path to glory, but as it states in vs 29 this is the portion of a wicked man from God. As I read this chapter: it kept coming to me how I was high on life, but only for a season. The path of the wicked can bring riches and fame, but at what cost. Am I willing to to give up everlasting life for riches and power. No, I’ve tried that and failed. I want the glory of my life to be from God. Man has put their trust in the wrong things; money and power are of the wicked. I want the power of Jesus; not of this world……Thank you Jesus……..Amen!!!!

  39. Job 20:29 Such is the fate God allots the wicked, the heritage appointed for them by God.”

It’s a very common thing for people in that day to think that someone in the condition that Lot is in and the things that he has gone thru would be accused of these things. He actually went further than all the others to accuse him specifically on certain things.

Why do we judge them so quickly? If a pastor were to fall into the same condition, losing his family and all his possession, would we think, “he’s probably in sin”. Fortunately God is not in the punishing mood, punishment for sin is reserved for the day of judgment. If we were to be judged for our sins daily, we would be dead.

  40. 27 The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

28 The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

God is our avenger, he loves us that he gave his life for us. He’ll take back what the wicked has taken from you. Rest assured that nothing goes unseen God always knows the intention of the wicked heart.

  41. “Though the pride of the godless reaches to the heavens and their heads touch the clouds, yet they will vanish forever, thrown away like their own dung. Those who knew them will ask, ‘Where are they?’ They will fade like a dream and not be found. They will vanish like a vision in the night.”
    ‭‭Job‬ ‭20:6-8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Those that riot in the streets, and the ones that persecuted a godly. What are their names again???? What was their purpose?

The meek shall Inherit the earth, but the weak shall be buried in dirt.

  42. 3 I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.

4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

Only the proud, refuses to listen when they are correct…

  43. 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

We know who wins in the end. When your down just remind your enemy that you already know the outcome. We win!

  44. Even a broken clock is right two times a day, but just because something he says might be correct doesn’t mean that everything he says is correct. Don’t forget when you are talking with your friends that it is not bad for you to stand up for yourself. It’s also alright to ask people to stop, walk away, or don’t listen.

  45. Little did Zophar know that something good would come out of Job’s affliction.
Everyone who says yes to the Lord and follows HIM will witness trouble some circumstances.
It’s part of the test from the LORD,and I’m thankful for HIS GRACE that helps us through our difficulties.

  46. 29 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

Are you ready for the consequences of your actions.

  47. 12 “They enjoyed the sweet taste of wickedness, letting it melt under their tongue. 13 They savored it, holding it long in their mouths. 14 But suddenly the food in their bellies turns sour, a poisonous venom in their stomach.

Many will have the good things of life and enjoy them, such as wealth, power, or position. But not having a relationship with God, all good things will end. God can give and taketh away.

  48. 4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

Likewise is sin..like a sugar high may feel good on the moment but the crash is unto death…

  49. Business Owners Beware

19 MSG No quiet picnics for them beside gentle streams with fresh-baked bread and cheese, and tall, cool drinks. They spit out their food half-chewed, unable to relax and enjoy anything they’ve worked for.
And why? Because they exploited the poor, took what never belonged to them.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to own and operate a business should take special warning to verses such as these. I know this is Job’s friend offering a reason to his suffering but look at as a warning. If as a business decision maker we chose to withhold something from a client or add something to a client they do not deserve or ask for; likely this could be our reward.

An opportunity may be that a certain customer wants to purchase 30 widgets and are willing to pay $5 for each widget. The normal selling price for the widgets is $4. Should we alert the buyer to the normal selling price or take the extra profit? Maybe the church needs some new curtains and the extra profit from this job would cover the cost.

I believe the Godly thing to do is sell the widgets for the normal $4 sales price. It could be the buyer is only testing our integrity and if we make the correct choice there may be future orders that will more than cover the cost of the new curtains at the church. It might not be a test. Either way, I believe always doing the correct thing will keep me from chasing the proverbial rabbit down the rabbit hole.
